A Week In Review

Your humble author had an opportunity to catch two preseason games and the Teal & White scrimmage over the course of the last week. Most of my thoughts can be found scattered across various threads on this lovely site (specifically here), but it's never a bad idea to get them together in one place.

Goaltending
Arturs_irbe_sharks_card_large_large_medium

Unlike every other position in this year's training camp, no one's fighting for a starting spot between the pipes- it's Nabokov's job, and will likely be so for the rest of this season. The hope is that a contract year elevates his play to a level above where he finished last year, as a sub .900 SV% won't win you many playoff series. Against Phoenix he played pretty well, with only the fourth goal being one I could find fault in. The Coyotes were on the power play, and with the puck at the point Nabokov inexplicably stayed in the butterfly- one cross ice feed later, Kyle Turris rips home a goal from above the circles, with about half the net to pick from. It was a good play by the Coyotes, and Turris really unloaded on his shot, but if Nabokov had stayed up he would have given himself a chance and probably made the stop.

Regardless, with number 20 as the consensual number one, there's a lot of uncertainty as to what Wilson may do. I have yet to see Thomas Greiss put out a solid outing this season, which is sort of unfair considering his performance against Los Angeles on Thursday. However, as was mentioned before, his post to post movement is average at best and his puck playing ability always elicits a quick breath and swelling of the chest. From what I've seen it doesn't seem like he's playing with a whole lot of confidence right now, which could be an issue considering I want to see San Jose's backup get roughly 24 starts this season in order to a) give Nabokov adequate rest going into the playoffs and b) allow Doug Wilson and Todd McLellan more time to gauge the talent level at the goaltending position for next season when Nabokov is due to hit free agency (I am an advocate of letting him walk considering the salary structure of the team).

Tyson Sexsmith has been the most impressive of the three that I have seen (with Stalock coming in second), but let it be known that is mostly based off Teal & White and about a period of a single preseason game- goaltending is a fickle position, and one that can fluctuate greatly from month to month. It's not surprising that GM's and scouts alike have difficulty projecting the growth pattern of a lot of these kids.

So what to do you ask? Here's my thought process- keep Greiss up on the NHL roster for the time being. You save some coin to fill out the roster, as well as giving Stalock and Sexsmith the opportunity to platoon down at Worcester. Both have yet to play at the professional level, and the reps they get down there will be much more beneficial than the ones they would get behind Nabokov (no matter how much I would like him to do so, I doubt McLellan starts the backup 24 times this season). Then, if Greiss has failed to keep the team in games, you have the ability to utilize all three of these goaltenders two-way contracts during the stretch run, making a switch if necessary.

As mentioned earlier, I would like to see 12-8-29 get roughly 60-75% of their minutes against opposing top lines due to the fact that Marleau and Pavelski are two of the best defensive forwards in the league today. That's going to open up a lot of ice for Thornton and Co., and should make The Tank one of the worst places to play all season long due to the last change McLellan will be afforded. And with that comes the concluding sentence on the top six. They're going to be dynamite*.

*Two things that bug me though- first off, the next time you get to see a game, watch Clowe receive a breakout pass near the redline. See how he stops moving his feet and always looks for the cross ice feed? See how opposing teams backcheck down the middle because that's one of the first things you learn when playing hockey? See how he'll either try and force that pass or be forced to give up possession and dump it in? See how the far side winger is going to have to hit the brakes before reaching the blueline because Clowe took too long to realize that pass isn't open? See how it's an easy retrieval for the opposing squad? Yeah, it bugs me.

Another thing that bugs me (admittedly, a minor gripe) is when the Sharks are coming down on the rush, hit the zone with numbers, and Patrick Marleau tries to go high short side instead of shooting low far post in the hope that the goaltender kicks out a juicy rebound. I think he could look to that more often, but then again, I'm not getting paid 6.3 million dollars a year.

Maybe I'm not done with the big guns yet- I do want to say how impressed I was on Saturday with Dany Heatley. He made a great play behind the net to tie up the puck carrying defenseman (directly leading to Patrick Marleau's game tying goal), and had a real nice pass behind the backchecking forwards during a rush that Devin Setoguchi couldn't manage to put past Bryzgalov. It's easy to forget what kind of vision he has with the puck considering his laudy goal totals. You can tell he hasn't quite got the hang of his linemates (there were some occasions where he tried to cycle down low when the flow dictated he move it to the blueline), but that's going to come with time.

Anyways, the lower lines are shaping up quite nice with the addition of Manny Malhotra. He's going to provide some scoring pop along with Jamie McGinn (recent article on McGinn's importance found here), and of course will be a defensive powerhouse- you don't log big PK minutes under Ken Hitchcock based off how sweetly your name rolls off the lips. I haven't seen him play this preseason obviously, but due to NHL Center Ice saw a lot of his games and grew to be a big fan. Couldn't be more pleased with him coming aboard.

Another guy that really impressed me on Saturday was Scott Nichol. Just a complete beast on the PK. One play in particular stuck out (he made a handful of them)- Phoenix is working the blueline and the Sharks shift to that side. Nichol was at the top of the circles, checks down and sees the backdoor open up, commits to that read and deflects the pass out of play. Great vision, great speed, great from the dot, and a perfect junkyard dog for the bottom line. Towards the end of the game he took exception to a Martin Hanzal hit, followed him to the bench as they both were making a line change, and gives him a how do ya do in the lower back. They ended up leaning over the boards and jawing for about thirty seconds. I hope he can stay healthy because that's a type of spark plug the Sharks haven't had in a long time.

As for the camp hopefuls, Logan Couture has stuck out, but I don't think he makes the team considering the log jam at center- to sum up what was said before, keep him in Worcester, let him grow his game, and call him up if injuries start to become a factor. Frazer McLaren is a fun guy to watch just because he really can't skate or make consistently productive hockey plays, but he loves to go the net and can lay out some punishment along the boards. I don't think he makes the team out of camp unless the coaching staff decides he's an upgrade over Jody Shelley- there's no need for both of them skating on the fourth line, even with the small amount of minutes they'd receive. Brad Staubitz has been his usual self, driving hard on the forecheck and creating some energy, but as I have asserted this offseason, it might turn into a shorthanded fest with both Nichol and he out there. My guess is that he's another injury call up during the regular season.

The remaining lot haven't made much of an impact in my opinion, so I'm not going to even attempt to project who makes the roster. I still think Torrey Mitchell is looking at some hearty LTIR time to start the year which should open up two spots on the wing, and Malhotra's signing all but confirms he's going to be out until mid November (at the least) in my mind. There's no way DW manages to get under the cap he gets cap relief through that, Malhotra signs for around the minimum (not going to happen), or San Jose rolls without a healthy scratch in either the forward or defenseman department.

Defenseman
A_sharks_medium

Kent Huskins had a horrible game on Friday. I really hope it's an aberration and not a sign of things to come, because as much fun as Huskins Haiku can be, a $1.7 million dollar meme is probably not what DW had in mind when he signed him. Speaking of which, here's a new edition for you folks today. I'm my own goddamn muse I tell ya. My own goddamn muse.

Huskins time hold breath

Shifts equal trouser trouble

Laundromat I seek

Anyways, I'm trying to keep a level head here considering it was only one game, but I'm not expecting all too much this season from Husky (who's going to be in the dog house har har). Some guys will have bad games and you can see the breaks just didn't go their way that night, but with Huskins it was different. He's soft. There were numerous occasions on the penalty kill (he saw a lot of minutes there, an option that will probably cease to exist beginning October 1st) where it looked as if he had never been in the slot before. On the first goal he ran a screen trying to, I don't know, politely squeeze the forward out of the crease. It was like he was stepping into a packed train and didn't want to offend anybody. The third goal was a pass through the box that was tapped in by Daniel Sedin. Huskins let him sit on Greiss that entire power play. On Ehrhoff's goal he left the crease to come out and challenge a winger on the sidewall who had just made a pass to the blueline- untouched forward in front, screen, goal, anger, mild psychosis, black out, wake up in a ditch, get home, calm down for two days, write a blog. Goddamnit.

This is precisely the reason I've been hammering home this point the entire offseason (I know it gets annoying but stick with me for just two more sentences)- Huskins and Boyle should at no point whatsoever be paired together. They both like to join the rush, and Boyle isn't going to cash any paychecks with his defensive zone play either. Why put two guys cut from the same cloth out there together at even strength, especially as a top pairing that is going to see a lot of minutes? Like Dennis and Mac taught us, you need both Honey & Vinegar if you're going to succeed. I'd like to see him paired with a neanderthal of sorts that will just go around and chew on some legs, but if we can't find the cap space for Steve MacIntyre* then Murray or Petrecki should fit just fine.

*That's obviously sarcasm in case you missed it.

Don't get me wrong- I hope for the best when it comes to Huskins, and think he'll be serviceable at sheltered bottom pairing minutes. It's just that $1.7 M is a lot to pay for that kind of service on a roster like San Jose's, especially if he's going to be middling in the defensive zone.

As for the rest of the blueline, Nick Petrecki and Derek Joslin have been the ones generating most of the buzz, and rightfully so- they both have consistently stood out in comparison to their camp competition counterparts. I was pissed Petrecki got a game misconduct on Saturday considering he was paired with Boyle and I wanted to see how that would shake out over a full game, but luckily McLellan has a couple more games to tinker with some pairings and hopefully find a good mix. Essentially I think it's shaking up to be a battle between Petrecki and Joslin for the sixth slot on defense, and while Joslin has impressed defensively (had a nice hit on Los Gatos born Viktor Tikhonov on Saturday, and played a good amount on the PK), David Pollak's recent post on Working The Corners seems to indicate that the coaching staff is leaning Petrecki. He had some issues with breakout passes on Friday's game against Vancouver, but in general has seemed to be the one who is getting the most looks. San Jose could use another physical defenseman on the backend considering Murray and Blake are the only ones who fit that role currently.

As for the healthy scratch department, I would prefer Joslin gets sent down to Worcester (assuming Petrecki cracks the roster) so he's able to get reps and improve his game- he's got the tools to develop into a solid bottom four pairing guy down the road, and there's no need to sit him on the bench in San Jose for the majority of nights. At twenty two years old he will have plenty of opportunity to grow on the top pairing down there. As mentioned earlier, I'm not a big fan of Mathieu Dandenault playing defense considering the lack of physical acumen on the bottom lines, but he looked decent as a forward- my hope is that if he does crack the roster, it is as a winger.

Joe Callahan may be my guy in the scratch department- he's currently 26 years old with a cap hit of $.500 M, and seems like a guy who's going to play a solid defense first game. His age is high enough where a full year in Worcester won't be as beneficial (compared to a Demers or Loprieno), and from an organizational standpoint I think that's a good route to take. Have a guy like him to fill in when the starting six need a spell, let your younger blueliners grow in the minors, and then re-evaluate your needs during the stretch run.

*******

We're only a stone's throw away from October- time to start getting out the tinfoil hats and buying Prozac by the barrel. I can't wait.

Go Sharks.

Here's a crazy idea for you...

If we can’t roll with 2 healthy scratches, why not let the 1 scratch be Dandy?

Hear me out. We liked him as a forward, less so as a defenseman, but he’s at least serviceable in both roles.

It’s unlikely that you’ll have two injuries to a forward and a defenseman at the same time, so having someone who can fill in for either would be a plus, and would save some coin.

I wouldn’t call it crazy- it’s a plausible scenario, and a pretty good one at that.

The issues I see with it are a) now you’ve locked in a one way contract that reduces your flexibility b) the fact that Head & Shoulders (Dandy) would be playing defense on nights where guys need a game off and c) I’m not sure if he’s even good enough to crack the roster.

I think the Malhotra signing is an indication that Mitchell is along ways away from getting back to the team. If they expected to be out for only two weeks or so, why not plug Couture in and utilize his two way when Mitchell returns? My guess is that he is placed on the LTIR and then assigned to Worcester on a conditioning assignment. After signing him to a three year deal I’m sure DW will make sure he takes his time rejoining the team and subsequently begin to chip away at the cap. It might be long enough where we can carry twenty two and barely squeak under.

Regardless, it’s as good of an end-around as any.

Good suggestion, I’ve had similar thoughts since I read he was invited to camp.

I figured he’d fill the vacant position left by Semenov. He can’t hardly perform worse than Semenov, unless he gloves 2 pucks into his own net…

Don’t forget having a guy that can step in to either role for a long term injury. If the team loses a top 4 D to injury you need experience to cover those minutes. You have a proven player at both positions with playoff experience, I don’t see the downside? This team will make the playoffs, the teams needs to be prepared for the grind of an extended playoff run. When you play meaningful games, nite after nite after vs the same team it takes a huge toll on the players, you get nagging small injuries and maladies and you need people to step in to bigger roles, all of this calls for experience. Three Stanley Cup rings and 80 playoff games gives you that experience. This not a rebuilding year, this is not a get experience on the job season. Who ever makes this team needs to be 100% NHL ready. Remember the past folks, it was not that long ago.

The Sharks failures of the past had little to nothing to do with the players not being NHL ready.

Also, Doug Wilson was hellbent on adding players with Cup rings last season. If he learned anything it is “what have you done for me lately” that is the most important skill a player can bring to the table.

well i wouldn’t say the cup ring thing was a total failure, it just wasn’t quite as important as DW thought it was

Correct, and I didn’t mean to imply that. What I was trying to say that just because a player is filled with experience doesn’t mean that they should be considered a better candidate than someone who has a skill set more suited for that team.

Not afraid of anything. But, if there’s not just one thing wrong with the Sharks, why are you so adamant that Dandy is the savior? I haven’t seen him play, so I will withhold judgment until he makes the team, if he makes the team.

Look at the part I block quoted. It has nothing to do with Dandenault. I think we all have our own favorite players, but rarely have you posted anything not revolving around him.

You missed my point entirely. Team go through phases, rarely do teams find themselves in a position where the Stanley Cup is achievable. The Sharks are a team that have a real chance for a long run. It is not uncommon for teams of this ilk to have a setback like they did last year, it actually becomes a rally point for the next season. The lesson is that simply being good in the reg season does not entitle a team to the Conference finals. Remembering the past can be a good thing. Detroit, Pittsburgh in recent years had some tough love too. It is up to the club management to assemble the small parts that can complete the machine, often it is the small moves that make a big difference in difficult times. Heatley is a big time player, this team needs to build a championship team now. It is not a time to carry a lot of unproven players.

by Hockey 2511 on Sep 21, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Wilson went the “get players with Cup rings” route last year: Boyle, Blake, Lukowich, Moen, Huskins, and even Claude-freaking-Lemieux were all brought in for that whole proven player aspect. Didn’t work out too well for the Sharks.

Dandy

I think that’s exactly why he’d be kept. Would allow us to roll a 22-man roster to start (with Mitchell on LTIR). Doing so would allow us to accumulate valuable cap space (until Mitchell comes back).

Who would have thought Semenov would be a perfect fit for this team???

One of the reasons I was upset we let him go

I remember thinking just that, that Semenov could be a healthy scratch forward and defensemen.

Ah man don’t even get me started- I was pissed we didn’t re-sign him. Showed a lot of improvement towards the tail end of last year, has one of the hardest slap shots in the league, and would have came in at a very affordable price.

Good call on the defense/forward aspect too. Didn’t even think of that.

Huskins

A lot of this season hinges on Huskins, because he’s basically taking Ehrhoff’s spot. We were all fairly unhappy with Christian, but let’s face it, it was probably as much for his contract size as for his play. He did have the -12, but he also put in points. This team is considerably weaker without him (when he’s on his game, which again, given the healthy scratches, is elusive).

In Huskin’s defense, he played in Anaheim (admittedly behind two of the top D pairings), and he’s coming off a broken foot. That may be part of the “softness.” He didn’t play much last year. We’ve seen him when he was with the Ducks. He was a serviceable D-man with them.

I’m still very worried about the blue-line in general. Blake is old, he’s not what he used to be. He does still eat minutes. Vlasic is solid, but he’s not going to intimidate anyone. I have no worries about Murray, except that he doesn’t provide much scoring pop (then again, he had that ridiculous +/- a few seasons ago, so maybe not letting the other team score is good?). Boyle is this team’s MVP in my humble opinion. He makes the offense dynamic. A lot hinges on him (and his health). We’re going to have one spot be a wild card, and just hope one of the training camp invitees or the rookies is ready, and then there’s Huskins. If he does turn out to be serviceable, we’ve got 3 pairs deep. If he’s not, we look pretty shaky. Unfamiliar territory for the Sharks, who have usually been solid at the back.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

so maybe not letting the other team score is good?

Of course. That’s Murray’s value on the team.

As for Vlasic, I turned on Friday’s game when it was already 5-0, but what I saw of Vlasic gave me the tinglies. He was not only tenacious on the puck, but I saw him going out of his way to hit opponents. I can’t comment on the first half, but the second half was fun to watch. (After Greiss was pulled, we won 2-1)

In Greiss’ defense, he did look terrible against Phoenix, but he played very well against LA the night before. The only reason Brown tied that game is because the D let him stand behind the goalie for 15 seconds completely unmolested and they finally passed it to him and he roofed it. There was nothing Greiss could do.

Quextion for Mr. Plank (or anyone else) regarding the Center Ice package; I’m told it will finally be available for Comcast customers in Felton and am wondering how it works. I’m assuming none of it will be in HD; Comcast doesn’t seem to know the answer to these questions; also, does the package include TSN hockey talk broadcasts? Not a lot of HD games (at least last season there weren’t), but you obviously get every game on every night. I’m pretty sure it comes packaged with NHL Network, but don’t quote me. You may be getting it now actually. Anyways, NHL Network will get you HNIC and therefore crazy Don Cherry. No better way to spend a Saturday night really.

Every once in awhile NHL Network will broadcast a TSN feed (trade deadline etc), but its fairly sparse.

How do you guys feel about Petrecki being the sixth d-man?

It seems quite a jump from college to NHL but I think he can handle it. He could do the learning-on-the-job thing.

Someone on AN used a video game analogy before on prospects moving from college to minors to pro (I’ll use the analogy now). It’s like easy mode is college, normal is the AHL, and expert is NHL. Playing video games, some people can play expert mode right away, but if they can’t the go down a level of difficulty. Once they perfect that they could go back up.

I don’t know how accurate this analogy is… but if Petrecki struggles at the NHL level, do you send him down or keep him up.

by idunno723 on Sep 21, 2009 10:58 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would prefer it if all our prospects could age like fine wine a la Detroit, but the cap dictates you roll a youngster out there into the fire. I think Petrecki’s big enough where his body isn’t going to be an issue- that’s usually the problem with kids who make that jump.

If he struggles for an extended period (say the first 10-15 games) then I definitely send him down. There’s a load of two way contracts on the blueline in Worcester, which means you run no real risk of giving guys their fair shake.

He doesn’t have the pro hockey experience (obviously), but he has the physical attributes and the raw ability to be a capable 6th d-man this year. In a perfect scenario he would get a full season of seasoning in Worcester, but I think his style of play, size and speed give him enough to start his NHL career now.

oh, and I think Callahan is a nice 7th d-man

Looked pretty solid in both ends of the ice, and is about as cheap as they come. Dandy has to prove his a capable forward if he’s gonna make this team – he has some nice pace and decently respectable hands going forward, but if his defensive is really as questionable as I’ve read (and seen in limited action) then he can’t be the 7th d-man cause it just doesn’t make sense for your depth defense to not be defensive first and foremost.

It’s possible you misinterpreted what I was trying to say- yes, I think he is NHL ready, but in a perfect world you always allow guys to get in at least one year of professional experience in, if not more. It allows them more time to mature as well as putting off their first big contract.

As for the cap, I meant San Jose’s current situation, not the league as a whole. Most Cup contenders follow this formula though, as Sleek from BOC has chronicled extensively over the last three years I’ve been reading him. In order to compete you need premier guys making a lot of money (Thornton, Heatley), role players that may be slightly overpaid but still provide good value (Murray), and young guys who are producing much more than their salary would indicate (Setoguchi, and hopefully McGinn, Petrecki).

It’s all about windows, and San Jose’s best shot in the next five seasons is likely this year.

Petrecki...

probably needs a couple of months at Worcester to work on the little things, like staying out of the box. Even in the T & W game, there were a couple of times he chose to play the man (and not the puck) in a way that would probably get whistled in a real game.

I love his motor and aggressive tendencies, but don’t we already have one D-man who spends too much time there? How do you get 161 PiM in 35 college games, where’s there’s no fighting?

Good catch (original post) on Heatley’s hustle play leading to Marleau’s first goal. Love to see more of that.

by bison on Sep 22, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

my worry about huskins is that the org is rating him WAY too highly for no reason. I hear a lot of people hyping his ability to replicate Ehrhoff’s offense and movement. If he was so good why has he played only 1 full NHL season at the age of 30? He’s played fewer games than both Vlasic and Ehrhoff.

Basically, I’m more than skeptical of anyone who thinks he will hold his own in, let alone improve, the top 4 – but i’m giving him the benfit of the doubt and hoping hioping hoping!

by a10dency2ask on Sep 21, 2009 11:50 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think the question is if Huskins can step up into the top four, but instead if Murray can be the top four shut down defenseman we are paying him to be.

If Murray can step into the role as the top 4 guy, I think the defense is O.K. It’s worse than last year, but it’s not terrible. I think that’s the best we can ask for at this point.

I think Murray is already top four really- he’s prone to making a bad pinch every once in awhile sure, but his positional awareness and size do a good job of masking his pedestrian skating ability. Teams have a hard time cycling the puck down low when he’s on the ice.

I thought he was our best blueliner outside of Dan Boyle in the playoffs last year. He’ll make the jump admirably.

doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. That’s an unfair assessment.

well it just probably means he’s nothing special, or at his age, he would have been given a better chance

I think he's getting his chance now.

I don’t see it too often someone plays in the minors for five years, then gets called up to be a starter.

What I was trying to say though is, past performances don’t always indicate how a player will play. (Ironically past performances are the best way to judge a player)

I'm not saying Huskins is going to be good,

I just think it’s unfair to already think he’s not going to be very good.

Heh, I agree. How long did we take to realize Carle and Ehrhoff weren’t very good?

I haven’t seen him play, well, ever, so I am withholding judgment. Just wanted to point out that the best AHLers don’t always turn into the best NHLers. I don’t know why he took so long to bring up to the NHL.

It could be organizational depth with regards to NHL-ready defensemen. I mean, its like Detroit’s amazing depth with forwards; on most teams, Leino would have already played at least one full season in the NHL, but because Detroit had so many great forwards already, he stayed in the AHL.

Yeah, Anaheim has a new radio color guy — Dan Wood, formerly of the OC Register (think of him as our version of David Pollak). He jumped the “newspaper ship” before it sank, which is good for him, but we’re a bit unsure of his radio ability so far. He does have a ton of experience covering the Ducks, but is a bit stiff and has a slight cathe of the Bryan Murray lithp.

It’s still early, though, and this is a huge change for him, but at least Steve Carroll’s pretty good with the play-by-play, and will do 90% of the talking. I do miss Brent Severyn’s wacky stories, though.

Those guys is horrid.

Remember that Joe Pavelski fight in the playoffs? When he was fighting Whitney (I believe) he punched Whitney several times in the face. Then the announcer dudes said, “Pavelski got his helmet on, and I bet it it’s on tight.” Then JoePa takes off his helmet and they say “Oh it’s a different story now.” Then JoePa proceeds to hit Whitney several more times. I laughed

Defensive pairings

At least initially I’d like to see Boyle/Murray, Vlasic/Blake, and Huskins/Petrecki. All three have offensive components, and physical defensive aspects. Minus the last period on Saturday (in which the entire team looked to be lacking in conditioning, Murray had a very nice game. He was moving his body with a decent about of pace, hitting guys when it called for it but also just standing up and being a wall at times, he had some pretty solid zone-exit passes, and had a general awareness of the game going on around him. He’ll have to get the stamina up if he wants to play 20+ minutes, but his aggressiveness on the puck excites me.

Huskins was bad on Friday, but so was the entire team in their own zone. Lots of standing around, not much body work, and a general lack of interest. I agree he’s probably not the answer with Boyle, but I think it was a bad night and complete lack of conditioning.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Sep 21, 2009 12:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Really like those pairings. The only concern I would have is that Petrecki and Huskins are the two most unproven blueliners on the team, but they’ll be seeing sheltered minutes as is- probably not going to be an issue.

I’m definitely not writing Huskins off just yet, but it’s never a good sign to see a guy that disinterested in standing up physically. I was shocked at the level of passion from him on Friday.

I think my favorite play from Murray against Phoenix was when he was carrying the puck near the benches on the rush. Had his head down, and some Coyotes forward tried to take a run at him. I don’t think Douglas ever saw him, but when they made contact the forward went right on his ass. Too funny.

If Boyle ends up pairing with either Petrecki or Murray it is essential we put this into action.

Manny Malhotra

The Manny Malhotra addition seems like it could be one of the most underrated moves of the entire offseason. The guy is a monster in the faceoff circle (a huge deal with endzone faceoffs for PP/PK) and he’s extremely versitile on the PK. Not only will he be able to play minutes… he’ll be able to be IMPORTANT minutes for McLellan when the Sharks are protecting leads at the end of games.

He’s not going to be a Top 6 guy… but it looks like the Sharks will be the perfect fit for him. They’re not going to expect him to be a scorer…they’ll just expect him to do what he does— and do it well.

There are my $.02… you may now return to your regularly scheduled programming….

Agree 100% – can’t wait to see him in teal. With Thornton, Pavelski, Malhotra, and Nichol, we have 4 centers who bring just about every kind of tangible a team could need, plus Mitchell will be back at some point and Patty can always slide over.
