Sharks camp down to 29; Petrecki, Couture among those sent down
From the Sharks site, the camp has been reduced down to 32 players, with Petrecki, Couture, Mashinter, Groulx, Helminen, and Vesce sent down.
[WTC Update]: Pollak talked to McLellan about Couture, Petrecki, and Mashinter (as he didn't know about the other three yet). McLellan said that all three are very good and look to have bright futures, but they need that "middle step" of development down in the AHL before they're ready for the NHL.

Like Plank said, they need to learn the speed of the NHL game. Time in the AHL will help with that.

Surprised about Petrecki, but at least he’s going to get the preferred professional year of experience we’ve been talking about.
My guess is that this sets up Joslin for the sixth slot. Afropuff should be excited.

I’m surprised to see Demers and Moore last longer then Petrecki. The AHL is the best place for him this year, but I still think he has more overall to offer to the team this season. This does make the race for the 6 and 7 defensive spots more interesting now.
Also nice to see Manny Malhotra on the roster.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
I would think that’s because while Petrecki is better than both Demers and Moore, he also has a lot more growing to do compared to the two of them. It makes more sense to allow him to get better at a slightly lower level so he can really transform his game from a college one to a pro one before being thrown out in the NHL. IMO, he’ll be a better defenseman in the long run because of it.
Plus, both Demers and Moore have had experience in the AHL, and so know the pro game, albeit one on a lower level. It’s not as big of a jump from the AHL to the NHL as it is from college or juniors to the NHL.

I agree with everything you’ve said, but I still feel like Petrecki gives us a better chance to win right now and it seems like this year is such a crucial year they might throw out a little conventional wisdom and go for it. I mean, Vlasic had a nice rookie year and he was a year younger then Nick and a lot smaller, while still playing a pretty similar style.
I’d be ok if Moore does make it, but I’ve actually been less impressed from what I’ve seen from him this year then last year. I do think this pretty much locks in Joslin as the 6th d-man unless he’s terrible over the next three games. Still think Callahan should get the first crack at being the depth d-man too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they called him up during the stretch run. Just because he’s down now doesn’t mean that we won’t be seeing him later in the year, possibly even in a starting role.
Completely agree on the “go for it this year” mentality. Our cap situation going forward dictates Wilson pursues that.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
yeah, definitely, just a bit disappointed I won’t get to see him play in San Jose for at least the immediate future.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Not by that much. Petrecki is only 775k against the cap unless he hits bonuses, which I doubt he will.
Oh really?
I guess my memory failed. I could have sworn he was over $1M. Okay.

growing pains
I agree about the stretch run. Season him a little while the big club gets a chance to gel. This is a different team than last season. Lots of important parts need to gel and it will be easier 20 games in for the youngster to join a settled lineup rather than one still trying to find some chemistry. If it takes longer than 20 games for this group to gel it may be a moot point anyway.
Here's to the second round!
btw, I gotta say I’m having a lot of fun arguing with Senator fans on TSN.ca in the latest Heatley column.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
shrug, I just like yelling at Canadian hockey fans who a) drink the koolaid of the Canadian media and b) continuously disrespect the Sharks fan base. I won’t pretend I know exactly what happened between Dany and the Senators, but their shitty management over the last two years, and having 4 separate coaches during that time after making it to the Finals would piss me off and request a trade also.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Oh TSN...
I probably disagree with you on Heatley in general, but I have to say, TSN is like, the flagship for hockey coverage. But the people who comment on their homepage have all the hockey acumen of yellow snow.
If one were only to read the TSN comments, they’d believe Canadian hockey fans were dumber than those in Atlanta, Miami AND Raleigh. That’s a real feat.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Dany Heatley
The thing is no one really knows the whole story with Heatley other then he wanted out and wanted to play for a winner. I don’t love a player who jumps ship from a team, but the team really is run by questionable management. Obviously Dany stated he was unhappy with his perceived diminished role on the team, but no one knows to what exact degree Clouston diminished his role – despite TSN’s report that it was just being dropped to 2nd pp unit time. He was an alternate captain and perhaps Clouston undermined his leadership, and if Heatley valued that aspect and knew he was going to continue to be undermined as a leader of a club he helped take to the Finals, then wanting out doesn’t seem nearly as selfish to me as some people are led to believe. It’s hard because he has such a huge contract, but maybe he really does want to win and be a leader on a team, and with a head coach who may not respect him or allow him to be the player he’d been for 3 and a half seasons.
I like TSN’s on-top-of-the-game style of sports journalism, but I feel like they tend to print their reports as the full, truthful and complete story when there’s probably more on the speculative side.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Oops, didn’t finish the thought at the end of the 1st paragraph
…and with a head coach who may not respect him or allow him to be the player he’d been for 3 and a half seasons.
Then he made the decision that would be best for him AND the team and asked to be moved. Ottawa sucked last year, and maybe some of that can be attributed to Heatley, but I still think it has much more to do with Bryan Murray turning that team into a joke and hiring and firing coaches like it was going out of style.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
I don’t love a player who jumps ship from a team
But how is it really any different from a team dropping a player ? They want a winning team just as a player wants to play for a winning team. You can’t truly fault either side for that.

by ang6666 on Sep 23, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree that it’s not entirely different, however a player leaving a team generally has their personal interests (for better or worse) in mind – while a team dropping a player has the interest of the other players, the coaching staff, the management and the fans to consider, so their decision has a much larger effect.
With that said, I don’t necessarily disagree with a player wanting to leave a team if it ultimately helps both sides or at least prevents further problems – which seems to be the case here.
I don’t make any claims to know what I discussed has any truth to it, but the way Heatley’s been thrown under the bus in such a one-sided manner is why I feel like somewhat coming to his defense. To his credit, he hasn’t given the media much fodder, which I guess is why they’re allowed to run wild with the ‘Heatley is such being selfish’ stories.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
and what is wrong with having your best interests in mind? with being selfish? seriously this loyalty thing goes a bit too far sometimes … companies/teams/whatever expect employees to be loyal, yet they will be the first one to throw you out the window when things go bad.

Professional sports are a different kind of business, because their sales are based entirely on the fan base, and player loyalty is an important ingredient in selling tickets, merchandise, TV revenues ect. – especially as it relates to your star players. If one of your best players has shown to be unloyal in the past, that can hurt jersey, t-shirt and other kinds of sales. It’s not a make or break thing, but to endure yourself to your fan base is pretty important. Not to mention we’ve seen loyalty to a team lead to players taking less money then they could get from another team when a player’s contract expires.

Of course. Its not like there was any Shark that recently retired that also wore #27. You know, a guy that scored over 500 goals and 700 assists, and was immortalized in a hockey video game. Nope, the Sharks never had that guy, and so I’m not a fan of him.

I'll miss JR a lot
but I’d much rather have Malhotra rocking the 27 when it comes to pure on-ice effectiveness.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Well, this year, yeah, especially because JR doesn’t play anymore.
Joking aside, Malhotra will probably contribute a lot more on-ice than JR did during his two years in teal (barring any potential Game 7s, of course, and the whole “led the NHL in game-deciding goals” thing JR had going on). Better defense and skating, and amazing in the faceoff circle. Off the ice, though, I doubt JR can ever be topped.

Wow.
I don’t know why but I just listened to Kawakami on the radio. Quote, “No matter what they do in the regular season, it doesn’t mean anything!” -Tim Kawakami on Sharks future playoff failures.
Also he believes Boyle should be captain. I think this funny because he’s probably didn’t even know who Boyle was until last year.
I think this funny because he probably didn’t even know who Boyle was until last year.
I pretty much didn’t. Does that make me a dumbass, too? To be honest, though, the regular season only prepares the team for the playoffs.

Kawakami is worse than Purdy. And it’s not even close.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Hmm, but Kawakami only writes about the Sharks when basketball isn’t going on. Or when something bad happens. Purdy is a fairly regular pain. So I guess the question is, quantity or quality?

True- I guess the best bet is to just generally avoid both their stuff. I definitely prefer Purdy though, because at least he is familiar with the game and has been around the team for a long time.
My favorite part of Sharkspage updates lately has been how PJ will take a dig at Kawakami, but do it in such a subtle way. For example:
Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area’s Chronicle Live Monday interview with Heatley offered a rogue’s gallery of mainstream journalists that have a somewhat checkered history covering the sport…
…NFL and NBA writer Tim Kawakami asked Heatley about his chemistry with Joe Thornton after skating on a line with him and Patrick Marleau in Team Canada’s Olympic evaluation camp.
That’s real solid stuff.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I’ve always wondered what is the consensus on Ross McKeon. He’s mostly on Yahoo these days, but he claims to have gotten his start around these parts, writing for, among others, the Sharks.
Jon Casey fan since '84
While I like mostly like what he has to report
He’s a bit too much of a Sharks homer for my tastes. When I want homerism, I come to Fear the Fin (and we’re not even that bad). It’s not immediately obvious when you read his stuff, but compare the Sharks-related material to that of the other teams he writes about, and you’ll recognize the teal heart he has. Not a bad thing per se, but I prefer my non-funny-blog hockey reports to be unsentimental.
My two cents…

(Pimpin my own site over here)
Reason #1 Sharks failed in the playoffs:
1. Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton let in too many goals.
If we’re pimping our own sites, I’d like to direct everyone’s attention to my site, where I attempted to make a new metric (called aSTP) to measure special teams. Seriously, it has a formula and everything.

Why would you divide by games played and then multiply by 82? Doesn’t every team play 82 games? Or does this formula include postseason?

…I think I messed up there. I meant to include that so it wouldn’t matter how many games were played, but now that I’m thinking about it when its not past midnight, that doesn’t make sense as its percentage-based.

but many of the jokes and gags are not what you normally see from TV these days. Can somebody who’s been to a preseason game in the Tank give his/her impression of the gameday presentation? Any better/different than before or same ol’ same ol’ lamo? (i.e. poor video replays, “make some noise” all night long, stupid features thatignore the game’s current circumstances, etc.). And how’s the food concessions?

I’ve noticed on replays that any time a replay is being reviewed and doesnt look like it’s going to go in the Sharks favor, they dont show it on the big screen.
