never seen that awesome Malhotra goal before – gotta love that he keeps on fighting to get the puck in the net – definitely what we need on the Sharks! Here’s hoping that this week passes by super fast…

Malhotra’s shot should be accompanied with a “LookwhatIcando!” a la Stuart from In Living Color. Seriously bad ass effort and follow up though.

again, as I mentioned in the “road trip to anaheim” post (and yeah, too lazy to link to it right now) – let’s go to Phx!!!!! I know it’s a non-Sharks game, but it’s still a hockey game and we can show support for Odin and company for wanting to keep their team right where it is. :)

Gretzky steps down as head coach- really took his time with this one. Not sure if that was the best decision to put it off until a week before the season.

Raise your hand if you agree that people should be properly judged by the color of their skin. Anyone? Nobody? Ok, then.

Finding it cool that Malhotra is half-Indian (subcontinent version), in a sport that is almost exclusively white, is miles away from whatever offense you were primed to take regarding, I guess, affirmative action or whatever.

by ievans on Sep 24, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

But more to the point (and I don't want to drag out this debate)

Hockey is the least ethnically diverse of the Big Four – football, baseball, and basketball are well mixed. All of the Big Four, hockey included, broke the color barrier before the 1960’s = Football had the earliest start to racial integration, albeit with some hiccups, baseball of course had Jackie Robinson, basketball had Wat Misaka (who was Asian, not black), and hockey had Willie O’Ree.

Not coincidentally, hockey was the last to break the color barrier, in 1958.

This list of black hockey players (which of course does not include Malhotra, who is of mixed French Canadian and (east) Indian descent) gives an idea of how Caucasian a sport hockey is.

Does this mean the NHL is (currently) racist? Absolutely not. But wouldn’t you want someone on your favorite team that looks a little like you, if you’re not pasty white like yours truly? I can sympathize with that.

Fear the Fin: If you're a Fin, you're family.

No … who I would want on my team is who can make it so I win. That is the goal of sports … right? Or am I mistaken here?

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

by ang6666 on Sep 24, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Malhotra is one who fulfills both

You are correct that the best players are the ones we want. Malhotra isn’t here because he’s of mixed heritage. However, as AfroPuff and Nael M. can tell you, there are some who would like to see more diversity in the sport without sacrificing talent.

Personal anecdote – when I went to Anaheim last year, fans in front of me were vocal about their pleasant surprise that the Sharks had a black player (Grier, of course). Just saying.

Fear the Fin: If you're a Fin, you're family.

by Conico do Mayo Miracle on Sep 24, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course you want the best player on your team.

What’s nice about seeing more minority players coming into the league and coming onto the Sharks is that it increases the appeal of hockey in general to people who aren’t already fans. I’ve heard quite a few minorities dismiss hockey as a white sport, and no matter how dumb divisions like that are, it’s a very real problem for a league trying to expand its fan base. This probably affects the Sharks more than many teams because the Bay Area is pretty diverse.

It's nothing but crumpled porno and Ayn Rand.

by strongrobot on Sep 24, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I see both sides of the coin here

As an Englishman, it irks me greatly that there havent really been any superstars from my country make it in the NHL. Byron Dafoe is probably the only one of note and he moved to Canada at 2 months old!

My biggest concern is all of the talent that never made it to the NHL because they never had the opportunity to even lace up skates. You can make an argument that race isnt important in all of this, but if that’s the case, then surely we’d have way more people on the list above. Right?

Why is baseball big in Asia but yet no one in Europe plays it? Why is Cricket a hug sport in the commonwealth, but not so much in the rest of the world?

The original comment was simply happiness that a player of a unique race was on a hockey team. I don’t think it had anything to do with equal opportunity or affirmative action or racism or whatever.

I know if the Sharks signed a half Italian half Russian dude, I’d be all about it. Until then, Ferriero will have to do… his name is Italian-y enough.

When my dad’s family (The Jaminski’s) came over from Russia, they started a tailor shop right next to Original Joe’s in downtown San Jose. For fear of being persecuted for their background, they swicthed their name to match their profession.

However, I have to say that I’m much more closely associated with my mom’s side. They are all hardcore catholic and the culture is really deep with Italians, so I guess I’ve embraced that more. I still like to channel my inner Ruski-Jew, though.

I know this isn’t completely the same, but I know a bunch of Asians – and, to a lesser extent, Indians – who love hockey. Which is pretty significant, seeing how people in Toronto are noticing a decline in the hockey rabidity in that area because of the large number of Asian and Indian immigrants that don’t follow the sport. Somehow, the Sharks have been able to tap into that group in a way that other teams haven’t, which is awesome.

Also, I think just being female tends to get other people to underestimate you. I went to one game with my friend Kendra, and one of those quiz questions popped up onto the screen: “Which of the following players did not win the Calder Trophy?” listing Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Nabokov. The guy next to me and said, “Oh, it must be Nabokov.” I looked at him and said, “No, its Crosby, because Ovechkin won the year Crosby entered the league.” He didn’t believe me, all the way up until it was revealed on the scoreboard.

I’m mixed hispanic and white … I don’t feel isolated … my boys are even more mixed … I can assure you they don’t feel isolated … not to dismiss how you feel … I just think people put too much into what one has no control over what they are born with – skin color, hair color, eye color, country you are born in, etc – and not enough into what type of person you actually are …

as I said in an email to another that took issue with me … to want/prefer/like/whatever someone just cause they are a minority is just as bad as not wanting/prefering/liking/whatever someone cause they aren’t. it is still showing favoritism to someone for something they have no control over.

To me

It’s just weird because I’m used to having Veterans that are around 40 years old.

Gosh I hope he's not!

I feel over the hill at 28! I’m still hoping I can learn to skate in the next year and make the sharks team before Heatley’s contract is up!

I'm flat footed

That's a good book

The Disney movie only covers the last fourth of it or so. But the part it does cover is pretty accurate, especially since those things tend to be dramatized.

I loved the movie, I always get choked up when he leaves the pen and runs to the mound.

Kind of OT

But here’s a video from Glee that’s absolutely hilarious. Best part starts at around 1:30. Hint: it involves the song “Single Ladies.”

that scene WAS good last night

Glee is still trying to find itself, but it is improving. (Told you. I’m trying!)
