Who is your Eastern Conference Team?

I don't think anyone has done this before so, here it goes.

Here's the situation: The ghost of Frederick Stanley has come to you in a dream. You talk about the Sharks for a while. He says he's a big Torrey Mitchell fan, and he'll do what he can about the injuries. Then he breaks the bad news.

Star-divide

Lord Stanley regrets to inform you that and Eastern Conference team will win his cup this season. You protest, you try to dissuade him, but alas, the Lord is set in his mysterious ways. "NO," he bellows, admitting his Eastern Bias.

However, as compensation to you as a tortured Sharks fan, Stanley has offered you a unique opportunity. Even though a team from the East will definitely win the cup, he wants you to pick which one. That's right, Lord Frederick Stanley wants you to tell him your favorite Eastern Conference team so that he might give them his highest prize. You are not to choose the best team or the most likely to win, but rather your FAVORITE, a team you root for in neutral games, secretly or otherwise.

"I would rather not choose, sire!" you protest, "I do not think I had better decide the fate of thy sacred competition." But Lord Stanley is adamant. If you refuse to make known your favorite Eastern Conference team, he will grant Dallas and Anaheim alternating Cups for the next 6 years.

So it seems you have no choice. Make your pick: who is your Eastern Conference Team? (And be sure to say why in the comments!)

Been of a fan of the Sabres for a while now, I try to catch as many games of theirs as I can on Center Ice.

Ditto

Miss the Briere-Drury days… and wax nostalgic (even though it happened before I was born) for the French Connection days of Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, and Rene Robert. This franchise deserves a Stanley Cup – thanks very much, Brett Hull.

not sure why

but somehow I like the flyers…

cool color scheme, and they have a weird ragtag feel that I like. It seems like their not quite in the elite and are always the upstart causing some upsets.

Caps

Unlike Drew Remenda’s popular belief, Jumbo isn’t the best player in the league. Best playmaker? Definitely. The best player in the league would have to be Mr. Ovechkin. I somewhat followed them last year, secretly of course, so as to not get my ass kicked by any fellow Sharks fans. I still love the Sharks more than any sports team, but given Lord Stanley’s consequences, I have to go with the Capitals

well you have to have at least a little love for the caps and ovechkin. after all, ovechkins favorite team growing up WAS the sharks :). i am pretty homerish when it comes to all sports and if its not my team i dont care too much (also a reason i dont do fantasy baseball, hockey, etc.) but ovechkin is entertaining to the point of wanting to see him on the grand stage.

When I first got into hockey and was told I had to pick an Eastern team, didn’t get why … but decided to go back to my roots – was born in Virginia, minutes away from our Nation’s Capital … so Caps it is!

Can’t swing it this year, too much going on … but next year if we play there, hoping to go – I stay with family whenever I visit that aren’t far. :)

I was there with my buddy from DC and we were wearing his Caps jerseys by the glass for warmups, then he flips a puck over to me. It was pretty cool.

When my Mom’s side of the family came to the U.S. after WW II, they moved to Jersey.

Therefore, I’m tied to the Devils. I’m also tied to the mafia.

Still follow the Devils, Scott Stevens – Scott Niedermayer was my fav. D pairing ever, still have an NJ Jersey from the mid-90’s that looks almost exactly the same as they do now. Love the continuity.

Looking at that list of teams

I was surprised how much I just didn’t care about any of them much. However, because of the history and a nod to our noble northern neighbors, I’d pick Montreal. Hearing the celebration/announcements in both French and English over their PA system would be cool too.

They don’t always do both – sometimes it’s just one or the other. Goals, if I remember correctly, are announced in both.

Philadelphia Flyers. Easiest choice I ever made.

Contrary to popular belief, I dig Chris Pronger. He is the definition of a defenseman. Big, mean, dirty as all hell, heavy shot from the blueline, refuses to lose, an absolute menace to society. Do I hate him? Of course. Doesn’t mean I can’t love him. I know, it’s complicated.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Braydon Coburn play. Like I mentioned in the FTF Fantasy Draft, he and Pronger are going to eat children this season. My God it’s going to be excellent.

Scott Hartnell is a tool and so is Danielle Briere, but other than that the rest of the team is sick. Simon Gagne has always been a favorite sniper of mine, and I never fail to pick him up in whatever NHL series is currently out.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the physical teams (see Flames, Calgary) and Philly fits that mold to a T.

Well, gotta run to my parole hearing. Go Flyers!

Caps and Sens.

I would say it would have to be between those two, because like others have said before Ovechkin is really the only player that can entice me to watch a team I have nothing to do with.

Sens because of Cheech and Michalek…if the sharks can’t take the cup the no one better than two of our own previous sharks.

Probly go with the Caps if I had to pick just one though.

I can’t do it too much, because of the Sabres part of me. Ottawa and Buffalo might not have the storied rivalries that their fellow Northeast Division teams have (Toronto-Montreal, Montreal-Boston, and even Toronto-Ottawa), but mark my words – it’s vicious.

Ovechkin is awesome, if he keeps messing around we will be telling our kids when we saw him break some of Gretzky’s records… And yes, I believe that just might happen if he plays long enough. Boston for no other reason that most of my hockey friends hate them so I root for them just to piss them off (they are Dallas, Detroit, and Pittsburgh fans).

C - A - P - S! Caps, Caps, Caps (that's the cheer @ the MCI Center)

My first NHL team was the Caps (I fell in love with a guy and the Caps in college – the guy’s not around anymore but still have love for the Caps.) I still wear my Oates jersey and wore it to game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 (we don’t need to discuss how that series ended do we?)

When I moved out here I got Center Ice and tried to follow them – even wore my Caps jersey to Sharks/Caps games…and then it happened. I went to the Sharks/Caps game a couple of weeks after the Thornton trade and something felt different in HP pavillion. The team was playing better, the fans were so excited, etc. I slowly realized that I was rooting for the Sharks instead of the Caps. At first I felt like a traitor, but then I realized I could love both teams. But slowly I have loved the Sharks more and more and even though I have a Washington Caps license place holder thingy on my car, I am now 80% a Sharks fan and 20% a Capitals fan.

Penguins. Growing up before the Sharks, there was this guy named Mario. He is easily my favorite player of all-time and the fact that he’s been able to save that franchise and keep them in Pittsburgh and that they just won the cup makes it so much cooler IMO. Crosby is a little whiny bitch, but I love Malkin and Staal. They have great young gritty forwards like Talbot and Kennedy, and Cooke. Just a fun team to watch, glad they were able to turn it around after some really bad years there.

I can’t really pin it down, but I’ve always liked them as my East Coast team since I started following hockey. Could be the nickname=awesome, but I’m not really sure. I even had them tracked as my second hockey team on Yahoo (the thing that allows you to customize your alerts for two teams) before I started going to a lot of Hawks games. If the Hawks were in the East, it’d easily be them. So much tradition, the pre-game always gives me the chills (and they have a song).

My Mom's side of the family hails from Atlanta

They dressed me in Braves and Georgia Bulldogs swag when I was little. Therefore, I tried to be a good Atlanta Thrashers fan – but it was hard because I could never watch their games (unlike the Braves) and well, they sucked. I was intrigued by their talent – but I ‘turned off’ Atlanta after the accident (so yeah, It’s a strange full circle type circumstance to see Heatley in teal)

When I started to follow hockey at the start of this decade, I developed an affinity for the Philly Flyers – because of their storied history (Broad Street Bullies) and the ’04 WCF run which saw the Primeau bros. talking every night on the phone – expecting their destiny to be a Stanley Cup showdown.

I also loved JR and enjoyed his stint in the black & orange. All in all I dig their style. I think I’d fit in well with those crazy fans at the Wachovia Center.

I’m also greatly intrigued by the Pelle Lindbergh story.

"A goalie stands on a very lonely island, and I’m grateful that I was able to share some of that island with him, but for too brief a period. Pelle Lindbergh had become, without question, one of hockey’s greatest goalies. When death defeats greatness, we mourn. And when death defeats youth, we mourn even more." – Bernie Parent
