Guess we’re not the only dissenters.

Where’s that Dandenault supporter now?

No surprise to see him gone. I dig the lineup tonight, though I’d switch Ortmeyer and Ferriero – surprised to hear Mac say that Demers is near the front of the pack for one of the d-spots, I had at the bottom of the pack going into the final few games. I like Mike Moore with Huskins, maybe he can show Kent how to check someone rather then stand around.

I was pretty impressed with Demers, actually.

It would be interesting if Huskins didn’t make the top 6, and Joslin played instead.

That probably won’t happen, but god I hate this Huskins deal so much.

It’s a glaring blemish on the away jerseys. Hopefully the home darks can cover it up.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

Im willing to be patient with Huskins since we’ve still never seen him play a regular season game for the Sharks. It’s not looking fantastic right, but I think it’ll ultimately turn out to be a deal like Ehrhoffs – somewhat overpaid, but still providing value. I think Mac is publicly challenging Huskins to be better because he thinks Huskins can if he commits himself a bit more and doesn’t rest on his contract.

I didn’t mean to say I wasn’t impressed with Demers play as far as development goes, because I think he’s coming along very well, especially for a 7th rounder. However, relative to the Sharks opening night roster, I still think he doesn’t provide enough positives as a 3rd line defenseman and he’s still tends to be soft in his own zone.

Don’t tempt fate, enjoy the quiet.

Huskins has been all over the place for me, some days he’s ok, others he’s horrendous. Same with Hinote actually.

I’m surprised at how well some of these kids are doing (specifically Ferriero and Demers). They weren’t on my radar at all coming into camp and now I’m pulling for them to make the team.

Ferriero may be served by a year in the AHL like Petrecki and Couture, he is just out of school. Still, I love what this kid brings to the table.

7th man is worst case scenario

1.7m is a lot of money to be a healthy scratch. That would be worse case scenario. McLellan won’t play him if he sucks. I hope we don’t get stuck with that contract.

Part if me thinks that DW signed Huskins and overpaid him simply to trade him. (like he did with Carle) he mighT have been trying to oversell him and try to get something back from the trade last year at the deadline.

by skilletboy on Sep 25, 2009 1:29 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

if that's true

it’s a heck of an oversell.
And why let Moen walk, then? Of the two, I think he was the more valuable player, but at lot of that comes from Huskins being out for so long.

I was, and I am still, hoping for a trade with Huskins. The more I hear about the guy, the more worried and upset I get. Most of us haven’t even seen him play yet. Jumps into the play an inopportune times, doesn’t hit, out of condition, 1.7 mil.

1-1

It’s alright this year. Lost 5 players to D1 so it’s a much younger team.

foot injury

I wonder how much Huskins’ old foot injury is playing into his lack of conditioning and weak play. Is he afraid of injuring it again? I mean, bust or not bust, this guy did get a +26 while in Anaheim, albeit while playing with Pronger and Neinamyer (SP).

Opinions on whether or not Hinote makes the team?

I'd say doubtful!

Although I am really uncomfortable with a Shelly Nichol Staubitz line. Perhaps they could roll out a Shelly Nichol Hinote 4th line, and keep Staubitz solely for Nashville games!

The third and fourth lines are still too up in the air for me. Malhotra and Nichol are locks on their lines, but with Mitchell being out, McGinn looking likely to be a starter and Ferriero getting a look what do you do with Hinote? Do you play (and Sign!) the experience guy over the guys that are young but you could argue look way more impressive?

The third and fourth lines could look anything like this on opening night:

3rd
McGinn – Malhotra – Ortmeyer
Mitchell (Probably not!) – Malhotra – McGinn
McGinn – Malhotra – Ferriero

4th
Shelly – Nichol – Staubitz
Shelly – Nichol – McLaren
Shelly – Nichol – Hinote
McLaren – Nichol – Staubitz
McLaren – Nichol – Hinote

At this rate I can see the sharks starting a lot of nights with 7 defense men, because any combination of that 4th line looks like the Penalty Box Three.

I didnt even factor Ortmeyer playing on the 4th line

I think that would blow my mind if I tried to figure that out.

In a injury-free world I like:

McGinn – Malhotra – Mitchell (Ferriero on this line with Mitchell out)
Shelley – Nichol – Ortmeyer

Scratches: Hinote and Ferriero (but if Ferriero spends more then a few games in the press box, send him back to Worcester for playing time). Hinote is prone to penalties, but he has use in certain games when he can draw teams into 4 on 4 scenarios and open the ice up a bit for the big guns. Ferriero should get the chance to be the top depth playing forward.

No room for McLaren unless Shelley goes down and I don’t think there’s room for Staubitz period at this point until he can prove to be more then just a fighter – find an agitating roll, learn to cycle the boards and get in front of the net.

That's oh so wrong.

Without getting into details and such, why do you think the enforcer position exists and if it’s pointless why is there always an enforcer?

by idunno723 on Sep 25, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

didn't say we don't need one

just like every team, we need one, not to mention they’re fun to watch, but i just sometimes wonder why one needs to exhist. who/what team decided that we need one guy to fight?

by serrapadre716 on Sep 25, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll try to be brief...

Basically the main role of an enforcer is to protect one’s teammates. Just by having an enforcer makes sure that the other team doesn’t take cheap shots. If they do make a cheap shot (late hit or somethin like that) the enforcer makes sure it won’t happen again (by beating that guys ass).

Then there’s the create momentum bring energy thing too.

If you really want to get into it you could read this book.

by idunno723 on Sep 25, 2009 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

i already knew all that

but i don’t get why they started that. why not just break his jaw with a hit. that seems more fun than 2 people taking 5 minute penalties…

Hits like that rarely happen.

If someone was going to go after someone and hit someone, they’d probably get a suspension or something because it would likely be a dirty hit.

by idunno723 on Sep 25, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

kinda like a bean ball in baseball

there’s really no meaning but protecting teammates, but it’s just kind of stupid…unless jordan tootoo is getting abused by stabby stauby

I'm with you on your choices there

I think we are going to have problems killing penalties this year anyway, so having a 4th line with any combination of Shelley and any other enforcer type is asking for trouble.

My thing about Hinote is I seem to recall him being able to score goals the way Lemieux used to. Just completely out of nowhere. That would be nice to have on a third or fourth line too.

More on Husky

(he has a cool nickname, does he get any points for that?)

What Kent Huskins had to say about his play and his minus-7, something I brought up with him before hearing from McLellan: "It’s a learning curve, I think. I’m just trying to pick up as much as I can. I’m trying not to get frustrated and keep plugging away, working at it on a daily basis.

"It’s definitely not an ideal number and it’s kind of disappointing. Definitely not what you want. There’s nothing to do but learn from all the mistakes and get my game back to where it needs to be."
