FTF Regular Season Cheat Sheet: Home Base

Greetings internet nerds! Here you will find links to the various pieces Mr. Plank and TCY put out over the course of the last twenty four hours detailing the remaining players left on San Jose's training camp roster. As one intent reader picked up on, the pairings we used in these articles were not our selections for the team, but instead were the lines McLellan rolled out against Phoenix in the final preseason game.
After the jump is our final roster- there you will find our proposed lines and defensive pairings. Sometime today David Pollak of Working The Corners will report the final cuts, and that information will be updated on the front page of this post. In fact, it's going to go right here ----> (my dream was always to become a link!)
[Editor's Note]: Dreams die obviously- Pollak reports that final cuts won't be made until Wednesday.
Thanks for reading. Enjoy.
- NHL Season Preview: 2009-2010 San Jose Sharks (Team Summary)
- Fringe Forwards (Mitchell, Shelley, Ferriero, Couture)
- Bottom Pairing and Defensive Depth (Huskins, Demers, Joslin, Moore, Petrecki, Callahan)
- Line Four (McLaren, Nichol, Staubitz)
- Line Three (McGinn, Malhotra, Ortmeyer)
- Goalies (Nabokov, Greiss, Stalock, Sexsmith)
- Top Four Defense (Boyle, Blake, Vlasic, Murray)
- Line Two (Marleau, Pavelski, Clowe)
- Line One (Heatley, Thornton, Setoguchi)
Here are our final line selections for the 2009-2010 San Jose Sharks.
Forwards
| Heatley | Thornton | Setoguchi |
| Marleau | Pavelski | Clowe |
| McGinn | Malhotra | Ferriero |
| Shelley | Nichol | McLaren |
| Scratch: | Ortemeyer |
Defenseman
| Boyle | Murray |
| Vlasic | Blake |
| Huskins | Demers |
| Scratch: | Callahan |
Goaltenders
| Nabokov |
| Greiss |
Torrey Mitchell will be placed on the LTIR. As we mentioned earlier, we're hoping for a mid-November return at the earliest. Does he come back that soon? Doubtful. The bet is that he won't see a lick of time in 2009, only returning when the appropriate cap space has been cleared. This roster is currently sitting $695,836 away from the ceiling. That is roughly half of what Mitchell is due to make this season.
Bank on mid-January depending on who makes the final cut.
Go Sharks.

And on that
We’re stuck with Direct TV and their pissing contest with Versus here. No chance a bar around here is going to have the hockey game at 10 o’clock. Any chance someone here will have a link to the game?

Here's an interesting link for you
I’m not sure if this will help, put apparently Direct TV have been peppered with complaints and people threatening to cancel service over this.
From all reports, if you stamp your feet a little bit, they’ll give you Center Ice for free plus some other credits.
Here is that link:

Yeah, I have stomped my feet, threatened several times to change providers. They offered me a 50 buck discount on Center Ice. But that still doesn’t get me Thursday’s game. I’ll take the discount, but still looking for someplace to watch the game. Thanks for the link!

So, this is completely epic. Great job, you guys. Read through all of them, agreed with most points, love the final line selections.
Also, I have to bring up this point again. The Scott Nichol picture is probably the worst picture you could choose. Ever.

Yeah, I heard rumblings about that, but damn. I’m sure someone will pick him up on re-entry waivers later this season considering he’ll be worth half the price (as I’m assuming he’ll clear now).

Fantastic stuff all the way around guys
I don’t have much else to add other then you’re breakdowns blow away any team preview I’ve seen so far (this year or any other) – the season is just two days away and I’m so amped, and very curious to see which 20 men suit up in Denver on Thursday.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
I was surprised to see Ortmeyer getting so much 3rd line time, he seems like a solid 4th liner with Nichol and Shelley/McLaren. Ferriero definitely deserves Mitchell’s spot and gives the 3rd line even more scoring punch. Malhotra’s goal against the Ducks on Friday was a beautiful sight – McGinn working the boards, then turning a firing a quick tape-to-tape pass at Manny crashing the net from the sideboard, and one-timing it home. Very good sign that the two already are developing chemistry and slotting Ferriero in there will make the Mitchell injury not hurt nearly as bad.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Of course

Awesome write-ups guys
Pretty intense work here, I must say.
As for your proposed lines, I like them very much…save for McLaren with Shelley on line four. The reasons given for not having Shelley and Staubitz on the same line seem to also fit for why Shelley and McLaren shouldn’t be on the same line. I’d think Ortmeyer would be a better fit for the 4th line with his defensive capabilities and better skating, and just have Shelley and McLaren splitting the enforcer/scratch role. Just my two cents.
Still, this helped me get almost all the way through my work morning. So, well done! Well done, indeed.

I debated that with TCY last night over the same reasons you mentioned- Orts is going to be able to provide some help on the PK, which has been a big desire of mine since last year. I would love to see Marleau and Pavs get some reduced time.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was pencilled in on Thursday, and I’m completely fine with that.
Solid point.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
by Mr. Plank on Sep 29, 2009 2:12 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
My points are that Ortmeyer is constantly injured, and is sooooo extemely poor on the offensive side of the puck. I’d rather have McLaren, (at 6’4-225 is bigger than both Staubitz (6’1-213) and Ortmeyer (6’0-197)) who has some upside in a role other than fist fighter. He crashes the net with reckless abandon, and that was something that the Sharks so sorely lacked last year.
Plank and I agreed that it was basically a coin flp, but I give the edge to Frazer. I really grew to like him watching him play like a madman in the Worcester Sharks’ recent Calder Cup run.
Fear the Fin: Where... IMA TAKING UR BLOGZ FRUM U!!
by Matthew_Taylor on Sep 29, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions
And my point was that you’re not going to get a whole lot of offense out of the fourth line anyway, so bringing on someone that can help make life easier on your real point producers is a bigger gain.
But yeah, coin flip. Its likely DW utilizes his two way deals all season long anyway, so a rotating cast of players is highly likely and makes (in my opinion) Ortmeyer’s obvious injury issues a near moot point.
The fourth line is probably going to stink regardless of who gets thrown out there.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
by Mr. Plank on Sep 29, 2009 2:41 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
This was also under the assumption San Jose keeps Shelley. I think Frazer is an upgrade in the winger department, but I doubt DW throws him under the bus and sends him through waivers.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
by Mr. Plank on Sep 29, 2009 2:52 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Honestly, I’m not too worried about how many goals the 4th line doesn’t score. I am, however, worried about how many goals the 4th line gives up and how many penalties the 4th line takes. If we’re assuming that Shelley is a lock for the one wing (and he is, it seems), then I’d much rather have the defensive presence and PK ability out there for those 6-8 minutes a game that the 4th line will see. Honestly, if the 4th line scores 4 goals instead of 5 throughout the course of the season, I’m not going to cry too much.
However, I have also liked what I have seen out of McLaren, and if they were to, oh, trade Shelley for a hockey puck or something (a bag of pucks might be asking a bit much), I think he’d be a better fill in for that role than Staubitz. And for now he can mix things up in Woo-stah, and come out next year when Shelley is gone.

I see your point. I think it just may be my anti-Ortmeyer / pro-McLaren bias playing a role here.

Was just talking on the phone with TCY about the power play- I suggested you throw Marleau on the blueline to make up for the lack of a proven offensive point man, and he floated moving Clowe up to line one in order to balance out the scoring. Patty gives you a lefty shot for one timers and has fulfilled that role before (Pavs has as well) so its not a huge shift in philosophy. Here’s what we got:
Heater – Jumbo – Clowe
Boyle – Marleau
McGinn – Pavs – Gooch
Blake – Vlasic
Obviously we’ll see a lot of combos, especially to start the year, but I like this set up a lot. Lots of movement and opportunity for backdoors on line one, and if you want a heavier shot you can shift Blake up and move down Boyle every now and then.

I’d love Clowe on the first pp unit if he is willing to go to the net to screen for Joe and Heatley. If not, I’d rather not sacrifice the deadliness of the first pp unit. We can’t have two players in the same corner :-P
Good point about trying out Patty on the blueline (or Pavs, if they so choose). Could prove to be rather useful.

Like I said below though, McGinn is the one who’s going to likely be the guy.

I’m sure he’ll get his fair amount at the beginning of the year, probably replacing McGinn on the second unit when applicable.
For what its worth though, I think McGinn is going to be the one left standing once the stretch run hits.
