Jay Leach Is Growing On Me

Much to the detriment of my social standing throughout the years, I'm a big fan of now-defunct glam metal band The Darkness (and consequently, lead-singer Justin Hawkins' follow up project Hot Leg).

While some cite Hawkins' overzealous vocals as a dark reminder of the oversaturated and shameless fatuity that plagued the Sunset Strip throughout the 80's, it's hard to debate the honesty of his craft. Critics see him as nothing but a puppet in spandex, pandering to a crowd of aging and obviously inebriated has-beens hell bent on desperately clinging on the washed out memories of yesteryear, and yet it seems that this is nothing but an elaborate ruse, a commentary if you will, on the current state of society as a whole.

There's no need to develop a "revolutionary" image that changes the face of what is inherently a business, a business that will eventually box and package that very image into manageable portions until they are ready to be served at the dinner table after your hands are washed. Instead, the leopard leotards and shoulder length hair have become a buffer, not a selling point; those who don't desire to explore what, at face value, is a dying (dead?) breed of rock showmanship aren't invited to the party, a party that is, if one were to make egregiously bold comparisons, filled with such greats as Freddy Mercury and Eddie Van Halen.

It's a party that happened thirty years ago, but it's a party that never really died. And it's a party that never really will, even as it fritters away from the mainstream's consciousness into the warm arms of brothels and bars in Boondocks, USA.

The Darkness and Hot Leg may be shit or they may be gold; if nothing else, they're honest. It's cheap, it's crude, it's crass, it's carefree. But once you get past the price tag, you realize Hawkins is just here to play. And that's about as honest as it gets.

[Insert awkward transition into how Jay Leach exhibits the same characteristics as Hawkins in that once you look past the price tag he's honest and just here to play. The cleverly veiled song titles that aren't really about a woman he's in love with probably don't apply, but what are you going to do.]

As was briefly mentioned during the in-game thread yesterday, Jay Leach has slowly found his niche amongst a San Jose Sharks defensive unit that most have labeled a weak point for this team (don't forgot about the secondary scoring! Hello? Anybody?). While he's not going to go up against opposing team's top lines on a nightly basis like Marc-Edouard Vlasic, or bring the puck up on the rush like Dan Boyle, you'd be hard pressed to find another $243,750 defenseman in the league that, well who are we kidding, you just flat out would be hard pressed to find another $243,750 defenseman in the league period.

Star-divide

Along with the cheap price tag however, are assets Leach brings to the table-- he'll pressure the puck carrier at the blueline and force him to make a play (a trait the Sharks have had issues with over recent years); in the case of a forward who has some speed, he'll compensate by pressuring the forward a little less and steer the play towards the sideboards, trusting the likes of Nichol, Malhotra, Pavelski, and Marleau to pick up any trailers on the backcheck. When faced with a low cycle he won't futilely chase the puck behind the net, instead clearing the crease of any bodies and/or pucks that manage to find their way into the area surrounding the blue paint. Leach has got some reach too (being 6'4 definitely doesn't hurt), which means that those cross ice feeds that have backdoored Rob Blake this season aren't going to be an issue. Toss in a willingness to drop the gloves when a teammate has been accosted (see Mitchell, Torrey against the Oilers early this month) or when he feels like someone has taken a shot at him (see Simmonds, Wayne last night against LA), along with an ability to lay on the body without ever taking himself out of position, and you end up with a guy who is well worth the low price of admission.

Although the current cap climate makes this next wish akin to lighting a candle in the wind, it would be benificial to see Leach paired with Jason Demers for an extended period of time. He might be a better fit on that bottom pairing for all of the above reasons; his stay at home presence would allow Jason Demers to figure out how to dispell the demons of being a riverboat gambler with a tendency to make some ugly turnovers, because the potential to become a potent offensive force from the backend is already there.

If management doesn't find a way to upgrade the defensive unit by the time Trade Deadline 2010 toils it's final bell, causing the Worcester Salary Cap Shuttle to be finally rendered irrelevant, it will be interesting to see if a) Demers gets the call up for good and b) if Jay Leach manages to cement himself on that bottom pairing. He's made a case, thus far at least, that leaving him in the lineup as currently constructed isn't as far-fetched as it once seemed.

Just don't let DW near a checkbook in July-- next thing you know another middle-aged defenseman with less than 150 NHL games played will be inked to a two year $1.7 M deal, and we'll have to start the whole song and dance all over again.

Caution: Low-flying zingers!

Go Sharks.

I'm liking him too

Just goes to show how important players’ salaries are in a salary cap world. I don’t think anyone actually thinks Leach is as good as Huskins, but when being paid less than a third of a guy who the Sharks had to give up a draft pick to sign, he looks like Super Dman, defeater of salary cap woes and bane of opposing forwards.

Leach vs. Huskins

From what I have been watching this season I have been far more impressed with Leach’s overall play than I have with Huskins. Whenever Leach is on the ice it seems he is around the puck…I can go almost entire games without hearing Huskins name.

Oh come on now. Here’s my comment history with the term “Huskins”, and I’ve definitely explained why I dislike him so much (and it’s not entirely due to his play).

Don’t paint me as a Huskins hater whose thirst for blood is unquenchable. Pretty sure his family reads this blog ;)

Going an entire game without hearing Huskins’ name (along with Leach’s) isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as that 5-6 defenseman slot shouldn’t be getting their name called a whole lot. If they’re quiet they’re doing their job.

I was actually pretty impressed with Leach the first time he played for the Sharks. He’s a big guy who doesn’t get out of possition much (a few early blunders aside, he’s stepped it up quite a bit with consistant playing time), and he’s been sticking up for teammates when the need arises. Out of a bottom pairing D-man, I really can’t ask much more than that.

I agree with your assessment that it would be nice to see Leach paired with Demers, and see what Demers could do offensively with a stay at home guy like Leach backing him up. But I have a feeling we may never see it. The team seems to be very, very committed to Huskins. He might have to actually eat DWs mom in order to get himself scratched for a game or two…and even then I’m not sure that will happen. Although, at least in the last few games, I haven’t been as horrified with Huskins as I previously was. Maybe playing with a big guy like Leach will help him, too.

Development

It would not surprise me to see Leach/Huskins the rest of the season, with Jason Demers permitted to remain in Worcester the rest of the season. I base that on the assumption that Rob Blake is not resigned next season.

I have no basis for saying Doug Wilson won’t resign Blake other than the fact that I don’t think he’ll resign him for more than his current salary, and I have no idea if Blake is willing to play for $1M-$2M per year. Somewhere out there, I have to imagine a club in need of veteran leadership would pay Blake $3M.

On the other hand, it would look pretty cold blooded of Wilson to simply cut a future hall of famer and the team’s current captain. Maybe Blake is willing to take $2.5M next year, in which case, even though he makes me go grey prematurely, I think there’s still a spot for him on this roster.

Of course, if we win the Cup, I think he just retires. So, let’s go with that.

Win the Cup, watch Blake retire, throw the ‘C’ at Boyle for a while. Seto and Huskins shuffle off on some weird trade bender, Demers/Leach becomes the next new hotness for our defense, and then all the high-quality forwards we have collectively gather their things and head off to greener pastures while we learn to play the trap against them.

Here we go again....

Is it just me or are the Sharks trying to trick us into thinking that they’re a cup contender AGAIN? I’ve seen this ugly flurtation before (too many times). This year I’m not falling for it. They will have to prove to me in and throughout the playoffs that they are for real and will do whatever it takes to win. Win, a concept that is foreign to our Sharks in the playoffs. Wake me up with the playoffs start. I’ll be the first and happiest to say I was wrong, but they’ll have to prove it this year when it counts.

The talk about being humble and cautious is completely overblown

As if McLellan would encourage his players to go nuts and skip practice – he was around last year, there are plenty of guys who were around last year, and even the new guys know about last year (to say nothing of the previous seasons).

That half-baked article above is a bunch of bullshit – “overconfidence?” Give me a fucking break – the Sharks aren’t going to miss an opportunity to destroy an old rival (who, ahem, hasn’t made it out of the first round since the lockout) while padding their stats, just so they can “stay humble.” It’s fucking January – shit’s going to get different come March, i.e. post-Olympics, whether or not we’re embarrassing teams right now.

After the Calgary game, both Pavelski and Malhotra were acting like it was a 3-1 or 4-1 win rather than a 9-1 win. And then after the LA game, Clowe permitted himself to say, “We had a good game last night,” in the post-game interview. Somehow, I seriously doubt that the Sharks will be overconfident if they don’t even allow themselves to gloat a little bit after a freaking 9-1 win.

Pavelski and Clowe were obviously with us last year, and they know the moment they gloat they’re going to get hit with a barrage of criticism (not that they would gloat anyway). Malhotra is new, but he knows the drill – underplay your accomplishments, because tomorrow’s a new day, without laurels to rest on.

They really think this team is going to think about a string of two wins that occurred in January once we get to the playoffs? With the whole one game at a time mentality the team is taking, I doubt they even think about that.

No no

If they lose, then they’re not ready for the playoffs. If they win, then they’re overconfident and will fail. I think if they get a shutout, it means that they’re in an offensive slump. Scoring 14 goals over two back-to-back games, though, means that they’re defensively lacking and need some depth.

Y’know, I like Pickles almost as much as I like Huskins — and I like Huskins a lot.

It’s hard to look past Huskins having done as well +/- and putting up more points than Vlasic this season — and for a smaller cap hit.

(That’s on ~5 minutes fewer per night, at that, though really, that 5m a night bit is a Rorschach test. If you like Huskins, you read that as him outperforming Vlasic on less ice time. If you hate Huskins, you read that as Vlasic going up against better competition and being more trustworthy with the puck.)

I'm less convinced the sky is falling these days

The Vlasic/Blake pairing stuck me as our glaring roster hole for much of the first part of the season, mainly because it seemed like both were getting beat A LOT. In particular, Vlasic was playing “soft.”

In the past few weeks, I really feel like they’ve turned it around. Blake still takes bad penalties, but he’s also been a presence on the offensive blue line, and has done a decent job standing up at his own blue line. In front of the net and along the boards, yeah, he gets beat on occasion, but he’s made a case for being our third string goaltender!

Pickles still gets pushed around on occasion, but he seems to be skating better and not having people blow by him. And his positioning has remained solid. If this stretch of play continues, I’m not as doom and gloom about the world anymore.

The bottom line is we need defensive mobility to run with a team like Chicago. If Vlasic keeps skating, I like the 1-2 punch of him and Boyle against the top two lines of Chicago. It’s not GREAT, but it has a chance. Against big physical teams, we have Murray, and hopefully Blake. There, maybe we could do with an upgrade. If it doesn’t happen, I understand. We have a decent chance if Nabby plays well and we have at least one pairing that can counter what the opposition throws at us. After that, it’s our FORWARDS doing good work on D that’ll turn the tide. This lineup is front heavy. I MIGHT be okay with that, but secondary scoring and backchecking have to be a halmark of this team from here on out. 2 good games in a row is a decent sign, but hey, we hold our breath until April.

I'm probably less concerned about Chicago than I should be.

Unless they fix their goalie problem, I just don’t think we’ll see them in the playoffs. The earliest we could see them is the Conference finals and I just don’t think Huet and Niemi will get them that far. There are teams that worry me in the west, and sure, Chicago does too, but I think Huet will be caught with breathing problems before the Sharks are.

Chicago is the team I am most worried about meeting the playoffs

I’m also a little worried about LA, but I think we would take a 7 game series.

Huet = French for Goal

I asked someone before whether they thought Huet would lose 4 games before the Hawks could win 4.

Huet won’t win them a cup I don’t think. The question is, who of the bottom 4 in the West can beat Chicago in a 7 game series? Detroit, LA and Nashville are tough matchups, and even Dallas aren’t out of it yet. Calgary and Vancouver are probably speed bumps for someone.

It is entirely possibly that Chicago will get bounced early, but I think they’re just too deep to get upset that early. They may not win the Cup, but I see them going late into May.

Pickles

I agree that he has improved his play from the beginning of the year. When this year started he looked like a less confident version of Erhoff trying to move the puck out of his own zone. Then a couple weeks ago it seemed like he was purposefully trying to add some edge to his game…almost to the point of ridiculousness. Whatever it was he needed to go through seems to have squared him away though…thankfully. I’ll admit at the beginning of the year I wondered if we traded the wrong d-man to Vancouver…
