"On the bus to Providence, got a good feeling about today's game! Happy Halloween" was the message Worcester Sharks forward Dan DaSilva {@wsharksdasilva} tweeted out to his followers Sunday morning. Tommy Wingels must have felt the same as he scored two goals in the second period and added an assist to lead the Worcester Sharks {4-3-1-1; 10 points} to a 6-1 victory over the Providence Bruins {2-5-1-1; 6 points} Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence.
DaSilva, who tweeted Saturday afternoon that he hoped his personal slump would end soon {zero points in first eight games}, finished with three assists, his first points of the season, Sean Sullivan finished with three points, a goal and two assists, and Brandon Mashinter had a four-point game with a goal and three assists.
Worcester goalie Carter Hutton {1-0-0} was magnificent in his first start of the season for Worcester, stopping 37 shots. Hutton, whose only appearance this season was in relief for starter Alex Stalock on Oct. 15 in Norfolk, where he made 47 saves, started for the first time since this past April, when he started for the Adirondack Phantoms for a game in Manchester.
Benn Ferriero continued his hot streak as he scored his seventh goal in nine games to give Worcester a late 1-0 lead at 17:48 of the first period. Ferriero's initial shot was stopped by Providence, and former Sharks, goalie Nolan Schaefer but Ferriero buried home his own rebound. Sullivan and Mashinter, who set Ferriero up on the initial shot, were credited with assists on the play. The goal was the second straight game that Worcester had scored the game's first goal.
21-seconds into the second period, Worcester's Andrew Desjardins, who was 10-feet inside the blue-line, let a cannon of a shot rip from 50-feet out that beat Schaefer top shelf, over the shoulder, to give Worcester a 2-0 lead. The lamp-lighter was Desjardins second goal of the season and was assisted by Justin Braun and Kevin Henderson.
Minutes later, at the 7:08 mark, Wingels made it 3-0 Worcester with his second goal of the season. Wingels, who was on a rush with Nick Petrecki and DaSilva, scored down low from the right face-off circle. The goal ended the afternoon for Schaefer, who was yanked in favor for Michael Hutchinson.
At 14:36 of the period, Wingels made it 4-0 Worcester with his third goal of the season. Wingels wiggled his way to the top of the goalie crease, where Sullivan, who was holding the puck on his backhand on the right side, found Wingels, who poked the puck past Hutchinson. Mashinter was credited with the second assist on the play.
40-seconds later, Joe Colborne scored his second goal of the season and the lone goal for Providence when he slammed home a rebound puck off teammate Kirk MacDonald's slap-shot that beat Hutton through the pads.
In the third period, Sullivan scored his first goal of the season and first as a Worcester Shark on the Power Play when he batted a bouncing puck out of mid air from seven-feet out on the goal crease past Hutchinson at the 4:35 mark to give Worcester a 5-1 lead. DaSilva and Mashinter were credited with assists on the goal.
In the game's final minute, Mashinter scored his second goal of the season and first goal since opening night to make it 6-1. Wingels was credited with an assist on the goal.
Worcester will be back in action on Nov. 5 when the team hosts the Albany Devils at the DCU Center. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m./et.
