Sharks head to the shootout and come out on top, defeating the New York Islanders 2-1
The San Jose Sharks headed into tonight's game looking for two points.
And that's just what they got.
Pa Parenteau opened the scoring for the Islanders in the second period, but the Sharks would respond ten minutes later with a goal from Dan Boyle on a 5v3 power play to even the scoreboard at one. A goalless thirty minutes later led the teams to the shootout, where Logan Couture and Dan Boyle both beat Dwayne Roloson to give the Sharks a much needed win on home ice, improving their record at HP Pavilion to 4-2-1. Niittymaki held the Islanders without a conversion, robbing Frans Nielsen with a glove save, and Logan Couture had a beautiful move that saw him slip the puck through Roloson five hole. Boyle would put the game on ice by roofing a backhander over Roloson for the win.
Joe Thornton made his return tonight after a two game suspension for a hit on David Perron of the St. Louis Blues. He wouldn't tally a point in the effort, but the Sharks top line of Marleau-Thornton-Heatley generated six shots and some notable scoring chances.
"I felt a little weird," the Sharks Captain said in response to the question of how his first game back went. "My timing was a little bit off, but that's to be expected. It's nice to get back there and compete with the guys. I'll be better next game."
Although the Sharks racked up 38 shots on net during the game, they still struggled with capitalizing on those opportunities. Joe Pavelski in particular had a trio of excellent chances, including a goal that was called off after the puck had crossed the line, but couldn't manage to put one in the net that would count. It's obviously been a frustrating set of games for the 26 year old center, but one that has indicated areas where the Sharks can improve.
"We got to find a way to finish. There's a lot in our game where we didn't come out of our zone clean and we fought it at times," Pavelski said. "Obviously that leads to finishing and scoring goals."
The San Jose puck movement was superb during the first ten minutes of the game, as the Sharks had no trouble getting the play out of their zone and up the ice. With no pressure from the New York defenseman San Jose was able to carry the puck into the zone cleanly without dumping it in, leading to scoring chances and shots.
But following Parenteau's goal in the second period New York seemed content to sit back, clog the neutral zone, and allow perimeter shots but box out bodies in front of the net. It was a gameplan that Islanders Head Coach Scott Gordon felt was effective to some degree, especially for a team that had lost eight in a row coming into tonight and was looking for all the positives they could get.
"Although we did not have the territorial play, we did outshoot them in the third period," Gordon said. "We did not give them a lot, even though they kept coming. We did a good job on defending in our zone, and not allowing any opportunities at all."
Dwayne Roloson saw a lot of rubber again tonight, but held strong and made thirty seven saves in what has become somewhat of a tradition against San Jose. Roloson has logged thirty five saves or more against the Sharks numerous times over his recent career with the Oilers and Islanders, including 43 and 49 save wins during 2008. To say nothing of his performance against San Jose during the 2006 playoffs that saw Edmonton advance with a 4-2 series victory.
In other words, send a postcard to Islanders GM Garth Snow thanking him for signing Roloson in the Eastern Conference.
Although Pavelski was held without a goal yet again, it wasn't due to a lack of opportunities. Early in the first period Ryane Clowe sent a shot to the net that was kicked out to a waiting Pavelski, whose follow up chance couldn't get past the netminder. He would have two other brilliant chances in the third period, undressing an Islanders defenseman with a slick inside-out move that was stopped by Roloson, as well as a wraparound shot that, despite crossing the line, was waved off by the official behind the net.
A confusing decision to say the least.
"I understand the ruling, but I don't have to agree with it. I understand what I was told," Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan said. "[The ruling was that] the goaltender has to have the ability to get back into the crease without any type of interference. It was a judgement call and we have to live with it. Just another piece of adversity that we're facing, and finding ways to overcome it."
That adversity is sure to be on display in the next two games.
"We're at home, we gotta make it count," Sharks Assistant Captain Dan Boyle said following the game. "It's important right now to get some of those points that we lost earlier in the season. We got two more before we get going on the road, and although we've got five out of six points [in the last three games], the slow start to the season makes the next four just as big."
Tonight's win vaults the Sharks into a tie for eight place with the Minnesota Wild, but it's certainly not the start most expected for the team. Finding some consistency is essential if they expect to continue that climb up the standings and begin to establish themselves as a team who is able to bury their chances when they need to.
The Sharks are set to have a two game stint against Calgary and Los Angeles; the Flames defeated the Sharks 4-0 late in October, and the Kings currently lead the Western Conference with twenty points.
For a team that has yet to win three games in a row all season, the Flames and Kings are good litmus tests. Capping off this homestand with back to back victories would go a long way towards getting the ball rolling before the twenty game mark, and presents a distinct opportunity for San Jose to set the tone for the remainder of November and beyond.
Go Sharks.
Notes: John McCarthy (aka "The Red Scare") had two shots go through the crease, and also had another great scoring opportunity in tight on Roloson. He didn't capitalize (story of the year for San Jose) but looked good in a third line role... Jamie McGinn was scratched for the first time this season... Derek Joslin is healthy and practicing, awaiting McLellan's decision on when he will get game time... McLellan rolled four forwards on the top power play unit again tonight, sticking HTML with Pavelski and Boyle... Pavelski went with a different shootout move than he usually does, which is only peculiar because it comes in the context of a scoring drought...

I think it’s cool that he added the 20th anniversary logo. But I wonder why he would get a new mask just over a month into the season.

That Pavelski no-goal irritates the hell out of me.
It was an Isle smooshing Roloson up against the post, so I don’t see how we interfered.
I’m trying not to be all tinfoil about it, but it was awful.
this
We just seem to be at the end of a lot of bad calls – there were two Islanders in the crease, IMHO, one appeared to be pushing Logan into the first Islander, who was preventing Roloson from getting into the crease.
LET THE ERA OF THE SUSHI BEGIN!
Teeth was right there, in the heat of the chaos I can understand the call. Doesn’t make it not a bad call, but I understand it.

After a night of sleeping on it
I feel a little better about the call. The league has to err on the side of the goaltender. We’d be up in arms if Nitty was impeded from returning to the crease.

Actually, they have won 2 games in a row
Twice actually. Against the Avs/Oilers and Devils/Ducks. Unless you meant they haven’t won 3 games in a row yet this season. If that’s the case, I feel like a dick for posting this.
Even if it's supposed to be 3 in a row
That’s still an awful awful stat. It’s things like that that have me worried about this team. I can’t tell if they’re one break away from going on a 9-0-1 run or a 1-8-1 run.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Inconsistency pretty much sums up our season so far
I’m confident things will get better though. I know Nitty is a notoriously streaky goalie but all we’ve seen so far from him in a Sharks jersey is a hot streak. The defense is better than I expected. Having one of the best shots against averages in the league is pretty shocking. More shocking is that inconsistent offense has been the major source of the team’s problems.
by puppysoldier on Nov 12, 2010 12:19 AM PST up reply actions
Honestly though, if the goaltending stays hot, and the defense stays strong, I will be a happy happy fan. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. These guys are not Cheechoo repeats; they have proven time and again that they can score. They are slumping, and unfortunately a lot of them are slumping around the same time, but you can’t expect to keep the offense we have shut down for an entire season.
Again, I’m just hoping our D and our goaltending stay as good (or get better, better is always good :)) as they have been (most nights).
by animadiversion on Nov 12, 2010 12:32 AM PST up reply actions
Actually
I think this Defense is not going to break out and score this year. Only Boyle is a stud back there when it comes to scoring and playing the Power Play. Unless we can get a better scorer from the D, all of the Offense will have to come from the forwards this year. A tough way to go I think.
Nitty has actually looked stronger to me with each game. I think he’s starting to trust the guys in front of him a little more. And the fluke goals haven’t been a sure thing the last couple of games. Sure, the other team has scored, but that’s been only to fulfill the No-Sharks-Shutout rule. There haven’t been any crazy bounces that defy physics and the usual bounces at the Tank. Though his adventure into the trapezoid last night where he almost gave the Isles the puck could never happen again and I’d be fine with that. I’m just hoping that if he reverts, he’ll revert to the Nitty that had fluke goals but stayed strong, not Lightning Nitty.
And honestly, Niemi (for all my 1A and 1Bad joking) has looked better than he did, too. It’s just that he’s clearly not playing as well as Nitty and his rebound control, or lack thereof, doesn’t work with our defensive scheme at all.
Yup, meant to be three games in a row. Thanks for the catch, it’s much more dickish to let me look like an asshole and not say anything.

Not really on topic
But does anyone else find the -1 under the shootout column in the box score for tonight’s game on SBN to be hilarious? For some reason I just can’t stop laughing when I see it.
2 points is 2 point...
But I was still uninspired by their play. Hopefully prevailing and getting the two points despite another lackluster performance will help kick this team into gear and get them into a groove.
Also, thank god for Niittymaki.

Is it time
to try and move Niemi? I wonder if there would be any interest since he’s done nothing this year. It’s funny how we seem to make the other teams goalie look like an All Star practically every game. But, I’ll take the two points and take ’em one at a time.
I think having Niemi around is helping to push Niity to play as excellent as he has. We also don’t want to get in a situation where we are starting Niity 60-70 times, as could be the case if we move Niemi.

I really like Nitty but he is streaky he also has never worked a Nabby work load. Nemo’s last start was not terrible and unless we can get Griess back and we have not overrated him as well we will need to rely on Nemo for some starts sooner then later.
Who’s gonna finish this off? I am going Boyle. - FML! No more OT Predictions from me!
People are giving up on Niemi way too fast.
I was against his signing in the first place. But now that he’s here, until DW finds a way to get a top 3 d-man, Niemi can help this team.
He is used to having a Chicago-caliber defense in front of him that blocks shots and, more importantly, clears rebounds. He needs time to adjust. I’ve read that he has been putting in a lot of extra time in practice and working with the goaltending coaches to adapt his game to fit our team’s style. He played a lot better against St Louis and I think he deserved that win, but our inconsistent offense couldn’t get anything going against Halak that night.
I’m fairly confident that he will continue to improve his game, it’s just a matter of how quickly he can get that done. But it’s far too soon to start calling for a trade. Not to mention, there isn’t many teams that would be willing to take him on at this point in the season anyway.
by puppysoldier on Nov 13, 2010 1:07 PM PST up reply actions
His first couple of games showed not only a lack of improvement they showed significant regression. The last two games however, have been remarkably better than we’ve seen him before. Hes still not there, and the biggest question right now is which Niemi will we see on a given night? I dont think there is anyone that DOESNT want him to be a force for us.
The reason why people were so quick to throw him under the bus (me included) was because I was against his signing saying he wouldnt work in our system and that he couldnt work in our system. And for all intents and purposes he proved that with his play…His last two games could be viewed as “anomalies” but we’ll see soon enough :)

Also, thank god for Niittymaki.
This x1,000, but I think the entire blueline deserves credit as well, for inexplicably not being the glaring liability we all thought they’d be in the defensive zone.
..:Fear The Fin:..
They’ve certainly been better than expected in their own zone, but I think the real concern had to do with the overall picture—how they can clear the zone and lead to break-out and transition opportunities, how well they can put the puck on net from the point, join the rush, etc.
And success from that point of view is still highly questionable.
by Timorous Me on Nov 12, 2010 10:10 AM PST up reply actions
Eh, I’d disagree. I think the greatest concern was that we’d bleed SOG again like we did all season last year, and without a proven stalwart like Nabokov between the pipes. So far, that hasn’t proven to be the case. From an offensive standpoint, the whole team is worrisome – forwards and blueline alike.
..:Fear The Fin:..
Ridiculously sloppy game
Glad to get the win but god the team looked so soo sloppy. Niitty and Boyle pretty much carried the team tonight.
I like Joslin but do we really have room for him? Demers has played superbly all season long imo; and Huskins has been playing well enough that i can’t see him being scratched for Joslin.

Couldn’t agree more. Everything was sloppy – clearing attempts, breakout passes, entries into the zone, communication, the low cycle, the high cycle, the powerplay. Good goaltending was the only constant.

There are a couple habits that are somewhat tied together that are driving me up the wall watching this team lately. It all stems from their unwillingness to use the ice on rushes. They will have the middle of the ice available to take the rush straight to the net, but basically everytime the puck carrier gives up on it and peel off and over to the boards either in the neutral zone or immediately entering the zone. They will then stay on the boards and most of their shots are bad angle shots that the goaltenders can see. The other thing is entering the zone on the boards and although they will usually have the option to dump the puck deep or take it deep themselves, they instead do a high in the zone, drop back on the boards into traffic and basically always turn the puck over. They seem to get in love with dumb plays from time to time that stop working pretty quickly, but then are too stubborn to simplify.
by dannyschmanny on Nov 12, 2010 6:56 AM PST via mobile reply actions
Shouldn’t we be getting more traffic in front of the net? Heck, we could even park Murray there from time to time. Just someone to get a screen in front of the goalie so he can’t see the shots.
I did see McLaren try to do just that, but that’s on the fourth line and he didn’t get much ice time. It seemed as the game went on the Islanders got more confidence and looked like they were confident that they might steal one. Luckily that didn’t happen thanks to Dan Boyle.
Yeah, of course we should—but I’m kind of getting to the point where I’m resigned to believe that it’s just something that, for the most part, isn’t in the character of most of the guys on this team. It’s just not their style. But man, it would be nice to see, especially in April or May.
by Timorous Me on Nov 12, 2010 10:13 AM PST up reply actions
Supposedly, the scouting report on Ferriero is that he’s willing to screen (or at last so says Hockey’s Future). I’ve seen it from him a few times, but not nearly as often as we need. But then, when he’s up here, who knows what they tell him they want out of him. And it’s not like we’ve seen him a ton this year.
Interesting, but yeah, haven’t seen him enough to really notice a propensity for screening. And his role isn’t large enough for it to make much of a difference yet.
One guy who could make a difference in this realm is Heatley, I think. He seems to be pretty good at screening and does it sometimes—when he’s getting in front of the net, it really makes that top line difficult to stop.

I was close to screaming at the tv every time they would pull up once they crossed into the offensive zone. Take the damn puck to the net! It’s infuriating. It seemed like none of the forwards wanted to shoot the puck, they wanted somebody else to get us out of this slump.

Very happy they managed to eek out a win after not even being able to put up a shot during OT. At the same time, this is getting ridiculous. The only goal the Sharks managed to score in regulation was with a 2 man advantage. We’re tied with Toronto for the fewest shots allowed per game at 26.9, and we’re leading the league by a healthy margin in shots per game. Something’s. Gotta. Give.

Right. Even if its just because the Sharks are in a funk, a D man is in need and a gritty forward will be the next issue. When the hawks didnt sign Madden, I thought he would have been a type of player we could use or someone like Eager, but we got Meyer instead, which I have been suprised with honestly.

it seems like such a fragile league right now with big names out all over. i am surprised at how resilient some of the guys on this roster are, like Logan, Pavs, Demers etc. who look like they may get more beat up than they do.
Nichol is just a gnat, but his energy and faceoff value are invaluable.
I’m not sure there is a pickup out there that would make a big impact. I suspect it is either a growth in chemistry or a blockbuster that changes the course for this year’s group.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
How to get this team clicking? Hopefully that is addressed before too many games and bringing in a new D would shake things up and address an issue at the same time, 2 birds 1 stone. I dont think it will be a blockbuster tho.

i would argue we need more effective forwards.
not fat contracts, promises of potential, and so on.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
So, your solution to upgrade our slumping forwards is to bring in another slumping forward?
Can you explain that logic to me please? I don’t get it.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Iginla 2g 6a -3
Thornton 5g 10a -5
Marleau 6g 8a -3
Heatley 6g 9a +2
I like our ineffective forwards a LOT more personally…
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
dump on it if you like
I like his presence and fire. I am not proposing it as some sort of Fantasy Hockey trade.
His team is and has been total crap. He is blamed for everything there.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
He’s their fucking captain. That’s what we do to captains. Maybe you missed what we did to Marleau for failing around here, he’s been failing there a lot worse and a lot longer.
You are also definitely proposing a fantasy trade.
Where are we going to make up the space to fit in yet another 7M forward? One producing less than our 3.65M forward that you want to trade for him, plus extra? That’s the definition of a fantasy trade.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Iginla would be tied for 6th on our team in goals with 5 other players that include John McCarthy and Torrey Mitchell.
Sounds like the solution to our offensive woes.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
fantastic, so use his stats which are down, no doubt, on a shitty team and tell me he could not flourish with a center to work with like Joe or Logan or Pavs
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
Again, you’re ignoring how we actually fit 7M on a team with 200k of cap space.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
well then let me retract my official trade proposal
oh yeah, i didn’t make one.
there are lots of guys around the league who I would love to see play for my favorite team. there are definitely guys on this team i am totally indifferent about.
I think Iginla is wilting is a terrible situation.
I love the sharks.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
Then actually say that instead of hiding behind the garbage you posted above
“i would argue we need more effective forwards. Not fat contracts, promises of potential, and so on.”
Right now, Iginla defines that more than any of the fat contracts on this team.
As far as not proposing a trade
“Trade Iginla to SJ for Clowe and Change”

I thought it was a interesting speculation of having Iginla a Shark, even if thats not what we need, its not gonna happen and he probably wont stay in slump

I don’t think that’s what he meant. I think just sometimes the method of argument/discussion here sometimes is a little rough.
I know for me, it is hard to join in the discussion in fear of being crucified because there is/are either poor word choice or not enough well-rounded knowledge. Even if I have a good opinion regarding the matter and I back myself up with good points I still, always, have to be prepared with a counter-retort in case the masses start. It just can’t ever be an opinon. Then it gets beaten to death. And I walk away feeling like an idiot. It’s just not fun when its like that.

Nah, opinion is fine, and as ED said, if Aero had stayed with “I like Iginla, I wish he was a shark” there would be no problem. But to then compare him to our forwards and say hes doing better/would be better thats where the issues come from
I hardly think my knowledge is absolute, nor would anyone else expect buttercrunch. As long as you’re willing to hear out what other people say and admit that you might be wrong about something I dont think anyone will be up in arms.

Defintiely, Clowe is so much more important for our team than Seto is; especially lately with our team playing along the boards so much. Clowe also seems to be an important figure in the locker room (he does wear an A after all).
I’d like to think we could get more than just Ian White from a desperate Calgary though, especially considering Seto’s age and cap hit.
Oh I agree whole heartedly. I would rather keep Clowe over Seto, but I think most teams would also prefer Clowe over Seto meaning just Seto might not get ’er done. Hence the, I would still be willing to give up Clowe for White.

I’m with this. I’m a big fan of Seto, but White would be a damn good thing for us and Seto is maybe looking a little pushed out by the combination of Heater, Couture, McCarthy and McGinn. Plus I’d like to hold on to Clowe. I’m curious to see what he could do with Mashinter on the same line as him, since they both like to dig in the corners and are both capable of screening. Probably never happen in a million years, but I can hope.
And put them on a line together in NHL 11.
Same
I used to love Seto, but i don’t know what’s going on with him. It seems like he’s just super mentally fragile, or as boyle put it he’s “a very special headcase”.
Frankly i think we’d be better off trading him before his value diminishes much further. Though i honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he started playing awesome again after being traded; a change of scenery could be what Seto needs to spark him again.
Its early though, and the guy has been hustling, so I wont write him off yet. But, I hope he does get his shit together. I dont want to face him if he gets his shit going again, dude is scary good when hes on.

Whoa whoa whoa…I like Ian White too but lets not get CRAZY! Iginla playin on Thorntons right wing…holy crap. Finally we’d have a power forward who can power his way to the front of the net, and who also has a hell of a shot. I really think Iginla would be perfect to play alongside Thornton, but i already rosterbated enough about Iginla during the offseason so I’ll stop…
This could probably go somewhere else, but...
Can I just say it’s a crime that Niemi is on the All-Star Ballot and Nitty isn’t?
I know they probably made that list with last year in mind, but still. Also, the lack of Pavelski disappoints me. He’s not playing like it right now, but if we’re going with last year, he played like an All-Star for long stretches, but no love. I know where my write-in votes are going.
