Moore, Henderson lead Worcester over Norfolk

Defenseman Mike Moore scored a pair of goals, his first of the season, Kevin Henderson had three assists, Dan DaSilva scored his first goal of the year and goalie Alex Stalock {6-5-1} stopped 27 shots as the Worcester Sharks {7-4-1-2; 17 points} defeated the Norfolk Admirals {7-4-3-1; 18 points} 3-1 Sunday evening at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

DaSilva, who scored 21-goals last season for Worcester, got off the scoring schneid when he gave Worcester a 1-0 lead at 14:34 of the first period. After teammate Andrew Desjardins missed a rebound shot in front of Norfolk goalie Cedrick Desjardins {4-4-1}, Henderson gathered the puck and passed it out in front to DaSilva, who found the back of the net, beating Cedrick Desjardins 5-hole. Andrew Desjardins and Henderson were credited with assists on the goal.

In the second period, Moore won the puck inside his own zone and made an outlet pass to Henderson in the neutral zone, who gave it back to Moore, who drove hard to the Norfolk net, and scored five-hole on Cedrick Desjardins from five-feet out on the crease to give Worcester a 2-0 lead at 13:27. Henderson and Andrew Desjardins were credited with assists on the goal.

Norfolk would respond nearly five-minutes later when Paul Szczechura made it 2-1 Worcester with his eighth goal of the season. Szczechura put home a rebound chance top-shelf past a sprawled out Stalock, who was on his belly trying to make the save. Radko Gudas and Pierre-Cedric Labrie were credited with assists on the goal.

Towards the end of the period, controversy erupted when a goal by Worcester's Jonathan Cheechoo was disallowed after being called good by head referee Terry Koharski. Norfolk's Blair Jones was serving a minor penalty for hooking at 18:42 and on the ensuing power-play, Cheechoo put the puck in the net at 19:43 that put Worcester up 3-1.

Cedrick Desjardins immediately protested the goal, saying the puck had been pushed into the net, but Koharski would hear none of it as he ruled it a good goal. Shortly before the puck dropped for the face-off, a replay aired of the goal on the Jumbo-tron inside the DCU Center and linesmen Bob Bernard and Chris Aughe motioned for a discussion with Koharski. After the discussion, the goal was disallowed as it was ruled that Cheechoo batted the puck into the net off his glove.

Early in the third period, Moore, who was just trying to put the puck on net, scored his second goal of the game at 6:26 with a laser-beam from 62-feet out. The puck had eyes on it as it went through a maze of sweaters and past Cedrick Desjardins, who never saw the puck. DaSilva and Henderson were credited with assists on the goal.

Worcester will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to Manchester. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m/et.

Beat the Admirals

Yeah WSharks! I wonder how the league allows two teams to have the same name.

Adrmirals name

Here is what Darryl Hunt of sharkspage.com emailed me earlier today:

“The Norfolk Admirals were originally the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL and when an AHL franchise moved there, they kept the Admirals name and became the Norfolk Admirals.

The Milwaukee Admirals were originally an IHL team and joined the AHL in 2001 along with a few other IHL teams after the league folded. They were allowed to stay the Admirals because that name was already established.

The Norfolk Admirals are named after the naval rank and the Milwaukee Admirals are named after a brand of kitchen appliances…..no, I’m not kidding, LOL."

Hope that helps :)
