Portland sinks Worcester in Shootout

Portland goalie David Leggio {8-1-0} stopped 29 shots, including going a perfect 4-for-4 in the shootout, and rookie defensemen Alex Biega scored his first professional goal to lead the Portland Pirates {13-3-1-0; 27 points} to a 2-1 victory over the Worcester Sharks {7-5-1-3; 18 points} Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.

With the loss, Worcester has now lost two in a row and continue with their offensive struggles as they had a hard time getting any consistency or flow in the offensive zone and did a lot of looking up towards the Heavens after a majority of their shots.

After a scoreless first period, Portland, which tied a club record by earning at least one point in 10 consecutive home games {9-0-1}, scored the games first goal early in the second period while on the power-play. With Worcester's Corey Quirk in the penalty box for a holding minor, Biega, the former Harvard Captain, fired a shot from the left face-off circle that went off the glove of Worcester goalie Carter Hutton {1-0-2} and into the net at 5:49 of the period. Paul Bryon and Alternate Captain Mark Parrish were credited with assists on the goal.

At 13:26 of the third period, Worcester's Sean Sullivan tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season. Tommy Wingels, who was not credited with an assist on the goal, was instrumental in setting-up the goal as he made a huge entry into Portland's zone and battled behind the net for the puck. As Wingels was battling behind the net, the puck came out in front to Sullivan after Wingels was hooked down {no call} and Sullivan put the puck through the pads of Leggio, snapping a three-game scoreless streak. Benn Ferriero and Jonathan Cheechoo were credited with assists on the goal.

After a scoreless overtime frame, Portland earned the extra point in the shootout as Portland went 2-for-3 with goals from Luke Adam and rookie Corey Tropp. Cheechoo, Ferriero, Wingels and Brandon Mashinter combined to go 0-for-4 in the shootout for Worcester.

Worcester will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they host the Springfield Falcons at the DCU Center. Puck drops at 3p.m./et.
