10 Games Report Card - Random Musings About the State of the Sharks

It's been perhaps the strangest Sharks October in several years. The team made it to the Western Conference final for just the second time in its history last May and did not make any significant changes to its roster with the exception of change of guard in goal. And yet pretty much the same roster of players that finished 1st in the West in the regular season back in April had the slowest start since the lockout. With 5-3-1 record, this has been perhaps a frustrating October for hockey fans in the Bay Area. It was a total opposite of the October two years ago when Sharks went 9-1 under new coach Todd McLellan. The team had a chance to improve its record through the first 10 games last night, but still fell short.

Yet a sample of 10 games gives us a reason to look back and observe what we have seen so far and what may lay ahead as the seasons develops. Here are a few random thoughts about the current state of San Jose Sharks.

  • Great Start for New Captain. I was not surprised when Joe Thornton was named a captain after Rob Blake retired. After all, he's been the most consistent and productive Shark ever since he joined the team almost five years ago. Sharks usually do as well as Thornton does. The new Captain did not disappoint and has 15 points in the first 10 games, including an uncharacteristic five goals, which means he's on pace to score 41 this season.  Joe is also second in the league in shooting percentage, with 31.3%. If captaincy is what Joe Thornton needed to motivate him to shoot more, why didn't the Sharks gave it to him earlier?
  • Tank is Still Selling Out. One of the great local stories here in Bay Area was San Francisco Giants who won the World Series and are celebrating at the city parade right now. The Giants have a long history, but have not seen too much of post season in the last few years. The media and the fans got behind them quickly, and baseball chatter is still heard everywhere around the Bay Area. This could also be the reason why we here at Fear the Fin are seeing an unusually slow traffic this time of the year. Yet with all that, the Sharks still sold out their first four home games, including the night when Giants were playing in Game 1 of the World Series while the Sharks faced the worst team in the league, New Jersey Devils. I was at the game and while there were empty seats near us, it was mostly due to fans watching the Giants and the Sharks at the same time in arena bars. San Jose still loves its Sharks.
  • Wallin - Sharks' Renteria? Speaking of the World Series, one of the great stories to follow was the performance of Edgar Renteria, whose contribution at most crucial times, including a game winning Home Run in Game 5, silenced all his critics. Before the World Series began, his presence on the team was frequently described as a failure - "he is too old and overpaid". However, his signing was clearly with post season in mind and he delivered. As I thought about this, I remembered that all of us have used this language describing the acquisition of Niclas Wallin. He's ancient, and he's making too much money. But he also has more game winning playoffs goals than anyone else on the Sharks' roster - three, and they all came in overtime. Perhaps one day we'll eat our words just like Renteria critics just did?  We can hope.

Star-divide

  • Octoberfail for Defense. The defense had perhaps the shakiest October of them all. There were games when they put up a solid performance, like in the past two games against the Ducks and the Wild, and then there were nights when we were wondering if they were playing under influence, like the nights against Carolina or Calgary. With change in goal and personnel, that's nothing to be surprised about. But so far they had as many good games as they had bad ones, and I still don't know what to think about their true abilities, especially come spring time. I imagine Plank still doesn't sleep at night.
  • Back to Familiar Lines. After experimenting with the lineup without seeing results, Todd McLellan decided to go back to what was working last season and installed all the big weapons on the first line. Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau got reunited on what we around here call the HTML Line.  The line quickly produced 10 goals in two games, but was held scoreless last night, so perhaps McLellan will continue experimenting. But offensively, not much has changed - on the nights the team is winning, Thornton's line is piling up points while. On the night they are held scoreless, Sharks generally lose. McLellan seems to think it's all Setoguchi's fault and he demoted him to 3rd-4th line role in yesterday's game. But at the same time, Clowe is not too visible in these games either. When was the last time we saw Ryane crushing the net or blocking goaltender's view? What McLellan will do next is impossible to predict, but I would guess he'll continue to keep the HTML together and tweak the other lines until Setoguchi and Clowe return to posing any kind of offensive threat. While we're used to seeing this from those two, how long can it last before one of them or both follow the pathway of Steve Bernier?
  • Niitty's Month. Another story line of the October was a possible goaltender controversy in San Jose between Niemi and Niittymaki. McLellan decided not to mess with our mental health and ride the hot hand, as Niittymaki has been the better player of the two. His 1.75 GAA and .930 SV% after seven games is higher than any of us expected, especially behind weakened Sharks defense. Perhaps it's also something to do with defense allowing less shots, as they're now 3rd in the league in fewest shots allowed. That is a nice change from being 20th in the league in that category last season. For those who are wondering, Nabokov has 3.04 GAA and .888 SV% with SKA St. Petersburg after 14 games (having won just 5 of them).
  • Power Play Dominance. If there was any consistency in the first 10 games, it was how dangerous the Sharks Power Play looked. They currently lead the league with 28.6% realization, with Minnesota Wild being in second place, despite generally poor power play from both teams in the game we saw yesterday. The PP units remained the same as they stood for the second half of last season, and they picked up where they left off last year when were the 3rd best power play in the league.
  • 72 More Games to Play. With all that said, am I concerned about the inconsistency we have seen so far? Not really, as the Sharks didn't play the most consistent hockey this time last season.  There is a lot of negativity we see here at Fear the Fin from the readers, especially after a loss, with some already giving up on this team. I'm not as negative, and I have no doubt this team will make the post season. Will they compete for another Western Conference Regular Season Champions banner? I really don't care at this point and I hope you don't as well. I don't think any one of close to two million GIants fan at the parade in the city right now remember how Giants played in August or May. The hockey goal is to be dominant in April-May-June, not October.

Really great write-up!

I think Rob Blake WAS our Renteria. $4M for a 40 year old defenseman? It seemed like a really bad deal until the playoffs last season. Rob Blake was really a pillar of strength and stability. He and Marc-Edouard Vlasic had pretty much the most outstanding series of any Sharks defensive pairing in my admittedly sketchy memory against Detroit.

To that end, I might dispute that this is essentially the same team that won the Western Conference last season. The Third and Fourth lines are pretty much new. And the improvement of Torrey Mitchell really makes an impact. We didn’t see this Torrey Mitchell last season AT ALL. He’s like a brand new player. I’d argue he belongs up on this list somewhere. You can pretty much throw the entire third line on the list.

Last season’s surprise was the chemistry of the Malhotra-Nichol-Ortmeyer line. While they didn’t score a whole lot, they did a lot of things right for a long time until some lineup instability pulled them in all sorts of different directions towards the end of the season. This season, the third line is again a surprise, but is also far more productive.

I don’t know that I completely agree with you on Seto being in the Doghouse. I think it’s more an issue of McLellan trying to get a lot of guys going, and Seto playing really strongly right now that he can elevate a lot of people. Every time he’s on the ice, it makes an impact. In that regard, I wholeheartedly agree.

Also, I think it’s time we gave up on Ryane Clowe being a Thomas Holmstrom type. Ryane Clowe is a power forward and a low cycle specialist. That’s his game. He’s been doing that much extremely well, and I’m generally pretty satisfied with what I’ve seen from him in that regard.

As far as the goal-tending, people seem pretty content with riding the hot hand. And, that’s good, I guess. I can’t complain about Nitty. But he’s historically been streaky, and if he goes cold, I worry about throwing Niemi into the fire. Say what you will about how bad he’s been, but I take no joy in setting anyone up to fail. I still feel we need to get Niemi some starts somewhere in here to keep him at least game ready. If not, we’re back exactly to where we were last season. We had one netminder. And if it went wrong for him, it went wrong period because we had no viable backup. McLellan MUST MUST MUST manage his netminders, not just “ride the hot hand” in my mind.

Also, aren’t there 72 games left? Either way, there’s a lot of hockey to be played, which is terrifying, but mainly, it’s freaking awesome.

Good points. Blake was good, but he was not a “secret weapon” that I hope Wallin is. Just trying to stay positive. Wallin hasn’t been bad though – far from it.

Good point on Mitchell. I should have mentioned him somewhere, and he deserved it.

3rd line – I think McGinn does more now than what Ortz did when McGinn was riding a shuttle last year. Statistically he’ll do better too because Couture is better and smarter offensive player than was Malhotra who reached his top potential in the league.

I couldn’t agree more with the Niemi/Nitty problem. Unless its resolved we WILL have the same problem as last year. I really do hope Niemi shows up and is a force, but I honestly don’t see it happening which worries me. I don’t know what options there really are out there…

i don’t think seto is in the doghouse either…he isn’t scoring goals but every time he is on the ice he is throwing his body around making it difficult for opposing teams…in no means is he a small guy but i didn’t know he had that much strength along the boards to bump people off.
he is too good not to score and hopefully he gets in a groove where he does.

lol nice screen name

I am just not that much of a Clowe fan. Where has he been this season besides taking penalties he did not need to take? Sure, he can drop the gloves or whatever, but more often than not I find myself going, “Good work Clowe, taking more bait and getting us a PK.” IDK, sorry MrsClowie, just wasn’t feeling it. Glad at least that I’m not the only one:

But at the same time, Clowe is not too visible in these games either. When was the last time we saw Ryane crushing the net or blocking goaltender’s view?

And it sounded to me like Seto was in the doghouse, but I think he can be a bit streaky and needs to be engaged. I hope he finds better chemistry on that third line.

Love Mitchell too, always have, and glad his speed picked up and he’s finally showing up :D :D

no prob

I think Clowie could be crashing the net more often instead of pushing it along the boards, but when people say he should be screening then who’s there to dig out the puck from the boards. He’s always there fighting and digging to get the puck out. He can’t be in both places at once. Is Seto willing to dig or Pavs or even Mitchell? If that’s the case then yea sure he should be in front of the goalie.

Aside from that, yes I’m upset with his penalty minutes right now. The A is not rights to throw down and land in the bin so often.

High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing… everything else is just figure skating.

I think Seto is in the doghouse

McLellan has nearly said as much:

Todd McLellan said his decision to move Mitchell alongside Joe Pavelski and Clowe while putting Setoguchi on the third line with Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn was designed to send a message to both players in new surroundings.

"It’s as much a reward for Torrey Mitchell’s good play – and I think he’s been a very effective player for us even if he hasn’t scored a lot," McLellan said. "We move him up a line and the other guy that gets dropped down, I think there’s more to his game than we’ve seen.

"He (Setoguchi) started in one spot and he’s dropped down a couple lines now. I think there’s a real clear message there that we expected a lot more from him," the coach said, adding that message has also been delivered face-to-face.

Alright fuck it...

I’m going on record.

I realize this probably has a very low statistical probability of happening but I think we need to either trade or waive Neimi….

It’s an expensive lesson for DW to learn but the sonner we move on from this obvious mistake the better off we are.

Nitty has out played everybody in camp and so far this season. But I’m starting to get the feeling that Tmac and the rest of the team doesn’t trust Neimi in net.

It’s a very real reality too though that Nitty can’t play all the games throughout the season. We need a reliable back up. Neimi isn’t it in my opinion. Greiss was and maybe he’s still our best option, but I think were all gonna see Neimi for what he is eventually.

My only concern is how long it will take and how much damage will be done before DW fixes it.

You can disagree with me if you like of course, and I’m open to discussion, but I’m going on record now.

Rant over. :)

by skilletboy on Nov 3, 2010 3:29 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Don't disagree all that much

As to whether it’s Doug Wilson’s lesson to learn? There were all sorts of conspiracy theories that the brass at SVSE had more to do with Niemi’s signing, and it’s part of why Doug Jamison stepped down and Doug Wilson wasn’t really behind the signing anyway, but whatever. Did you know aliens funded by the USSR shot Kennedy?

Anyway, yes, we need a viable backup. If we decide we have no faith in Niemi, then yes, the organization has to find some way to make his $2M disappear this season, because while Chicago can afford to sit $5.4M on the bench every night, I don’t think we can.

Whether anyone thinks Niemi needs to go or not, I sincerely hope it’s not in doubt that we need another netminder to play about 30-40 games outside of Nitty.

I don’t think Niemi will remain this bad. I’ve been against signing him since we signed Hjalmarsson, but I think he can get his head in the game. His rebound control wasn’t THIS bad when he was in Chicago. He’s not good, he’s a backup goalie, I think we can get some decent starts out of him yet.

I still wish it was Greiss and Nitty.

Honestly, I think half the problem was exactly what you said – the boys don’t have confidence in Niemi, so they play worse in front of him.

I think it’s too soon to judge Neimi. Especially since the team themselves weren’t playing all that hot. Let’s see how he does when the team plays as they should.

Angy your point is well taken. And a large part of me knows this is correct thinking. However, the one aspect of this whole situation that still bothers me… like a catchy commercial jingle I can’t get out of my head… Is that DW completely reversed his stance on Neimi.

I’m not going to speculate what could have happened behind the scenes, but this is the first time we’ve seen DW do that. And so far in hindsight DW’s original assesment seems like the better one.

I do recognize Neimi needs a chance. But I’m just saying that even after he dies I would bet money he doesn’t work out. I just smell too much smoke not to be convinced there isn’t a fire…

Yeah, Nitty has fit the team better then Neimi thus far. But I still think Neimi should see some more games, and soon, who would have thought he would be GAA 4.49 and Sv% .854 right outta the gate. DiPietro and Fleury arent any better at this point either, but if Neimi isnt the right fit for this team, starter or back-up, then it should be addressed before the beginning of the new year, I’m hoping thats something he will be able to right before then

I think I would have believed Nitty’s line more than Niemi’s had I been told them both before the season. Though at that point I thought the defense would look a little different, too.

Great state of the union writeup

Thanks for filling us baseball fans in :-) — I find it really hard to focus on hockey until baseball season is over. But srsly, This team is definitely not out of the hunt, and as you point out, there is a lot of hockey left to play. Making it as far as they did last year was awesome, and we should remember that we’re lucky to have that kind of history in our short franchise lifetime. Let’s stay positive and let McLellan do his thing. If they suck after 40 games, then by all means let ‘em have it, but until then, let’s chill…

Hoping they don't mess with our second line

Letting Seto-Pavs-Clowe stick together and regain that groove they had in the playoffs last year seems to me to be the way to go.

Also, I basically just really like HTML and Mitchell-Couture-Mcginn

by warning on Nov 3, 2010 11:06 PM PDT reply actions

I think HTML, Mitchell-Couture-McGinn, and Seto-Pavs-Clowe is probably the best set of three lines right now. The third line is putting pressure on and getting some goals, the second line has the potential to get clicking, and the first line has been pretty monster of late with the exception of in Minnesota.

I just sort of want to marry the Mitchell-Couture-McGinn line

Is that possible? Utah?

Anyways, too bad they moved Seto down and Mitchell up, but good for Mitchell, I think he plays well with Pavs too

Niitty/Niemi

I loved the Niitty signing and always felt uneasy about the Niemi signing. The first 10 games confirmed my feelings and suspicions. I’m not saying that Niemi won’t improve later in the season but I really don’t believe his “style” works with our team and I doubt it ever really will.

72 more games… ahhhh, I love hockey season!

Good butterfly goalies can handle rebound placement as well as Nabby could when he was on his game. Look at guys like Halak, Vokoun, Anderson, Rinne… all big butterfly types, but they don’t leave juicy rebounds in the slot regularly, they clear them out to the corners. Niemi needs to improve and needs to stop getting the excuse “The Sharks don’t fit his style”… It’s an excuse to try to explain why he’s doing badly without putting any blame on him.

72 More Games to Play

Even when being sloppy, the Sharks still had plenty of opportunities to beat Minnesota.

The reason I am a Sharks fan is that they consistently give themselves the opportunity to do big things. I appreciate the fact that the Sharks are willing to experiment and try to find something better out of an already potent roster. HTML was not concieved overnight. I know that they’ll pull it together.

You do not need a 9-1 start to make the playoffs. That’s the point, right? Get to the post-season to have a shot at the Stanley Cup?

No matter how you slice it, it makes for very exciting hockey.

Wallin's Playoff GWGs

Wallin does not have more game winning playoffs goals than anyone else on the Sharks’ roster with 3. Not even close. Patrick Marleau has 12. In our 10 playoff victories the last 2 years, Marleau has scored the GWG in 4 of those games. Meanwhile Wallin has only scored 1 playoff GWG in the last 8 years.
