Whenever the Red Wings roll into town you can feel the electricity in the air.
Tonight is no exception.
Detroit comes into tonight on top of the Western Conference, managing to distance themselves ever so slightly from the rest of the pack with a Conference leading 32 points in 21 games. They've accomplished this in nearly every conceivable way possible-- by scoring goals at a 3.48 per game clip (2nd in NHL), limiting goals against to 2.62 a game (10th in NHL), and finishing teams off with an excellent 13-0-1 record after leading heading into the first or second period. Considering their roster and historical swagger one shouldn't be surprised, but after an injury plagued 2009-2010 season, it's refreshing to see Detroit up at the top of the West once again.
Even if eloquent and classy articles like this make you reconsider the state of the human race.
The usual suspects are all in play here-- Pavel Datsyuk leads the team with 24 points, with Henrik Zetterberg, Todd Bertuzzi, Johan Franzen, Dan Cleary, Tomas Holmstrom, and beyond all rounding out a team that regularly ices four lines that will put pressure on the Sharks defense. Coupled with Niklas Lidstrom's umpteenth year as a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate, as well as Jimmy Howard's respectable .914 SV%, and you have yet another strong squad heading into HP Pavilion wearing the white and red.
They're a well oiled machine that has had the benefit of health this year, and every single player on the roster has averaged over 11 minutes per game. It's way to keep legs fresh over a grueling 82 game season, something that the Sharks haven't been able to do lately.
Skating with four defenseman for two entire periods against Edmonton on Saturday night, Dan Boyle (30:31), Marc-Edouard Vlasic (28:18), and Douglas Murray (26:39) were leaned on heavily by Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan in the absence of his 4 through 6 defenseman that started the year in San Jose. It was similar to the ice time splits during a road trip to Colorado and Dallas earlier this month, and one has to figure ice time might be just as lopsided tonight.
With Jason Demers, Niclas Wallin, and Kent Huskins all day to day with various ailments, The Tank will see a healthy dose of some of the notable Worcester prospects they have only read about up until this point. Justin Braun, who started the year with the San Jose's AHL affiliate, has impressed in his two games with the team. An offensive defenseman who put up 25 goals in 37 games during his senior year at the University of Massachusetts, Braun has a propensity for carrying the puck through the neutral zone and getting his shots through from the point. For a blueline that has struggled all season with generating offense from the backend after Rob Blake retired, Braun is a welcome addition to the team that could blossom into a Jason Demers type a la 2009-2010. And while he is definitely not the top three defenseman San Jose needs, he's an intriguing player who could fill a hole and potentially play his way onto the starting lineup.
But Detroit is no Edmonton, and a gutty win against the Oilers playing two defenseman short is a far cry from withstanding the barrage of what should be a Red Wings team looking for some type of revenge for last season's playoff ousting. There's nothing quite like a Dallas or Detroit home game, and there's nothing quite like seeing what kind of performance we'll see from an injury-riddled Sharks blueline tonight.
With San Jose in desperate need of points before a big road trip to start December, this is a night where the big guns have to make a difference. On a night where at least three goals will likely be the requisite amount to obtain a win, and the Red Wings a formidable opponent as always, look for Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Dany Heatley to produce. Although Lidstrom will see those guys all night, leaving players like Pavelski, Couture, and Clowe better opportunities to score, HTML is the defining line tonight.
They've solved Detroit before. And tonight's the night when they have to do it again.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-3. Goals by Marleau, Heatley, Boyle, and Pavelski. The organization clones Boyle before the road trip to ease some of the minutes off the original.
Go Sharks.

Wow
That article really helps me remember what steaming piles of… classy… most of the Detroit fanbase can be… I really hope we beat them tonight.
Our defense is a wreck, it’s going to have to be one hell of a team effort to beat them and they’re going to be pissed from getting knocked out of the playoffs by us last year.

I don’t necessarily think the article’s intelligent or unintelligent either way, but I do think it’s a tad premature for him to count on adding another championship based on play from October-November is all.

This is a true story btw...
I listed my season tixs to tonights game cause I need the cash… I took a call from some guy who want to buy them… After about 2 mins trying to figure out details he admits he’s a Wings fan.
I tell him, sorry, but can’t sell my tickets to a Wings fan. My neighbors in section 206 would kill me. He flips out starts cursing at me, which I gladly return the favor,… So I hang up and sell the tixs to the next person.
About 30-45 mins later dipshit starts texting me, talking shit, asking me “how many cups u got bro?”… And “grow up a little!!”… To which I remind him, he is currently the one talking shut to a complete stranger via text messaging…!
Typical Wings fan. Acts like a 5 year old whiny bitch… WHILE accusing others of being a 5 year old whiny bitch…

I think the majority of you are missing the point of JJ’s post. With the Wings starting off with the dominance that they have, the fanbase is feeling really confident about the team. Can you say that Sharks fans haven’t done this in the past? I don’t think so. Realistically, we all know the hot streak will likely die down but is it wrong of us to enjoy it right now?

If the victims family can move on, what beef do those folks have?
It's different for the family
For them, it’s a grief process. For others, it’s a matter of justice and right and wrong, or self-righteousness.
I’ll admit, the fact that the Snyder family went to bat for Heater and he still needed to leave Atlanta smelled foul to me at first. I have come to understand that sometimes, you just need to leave. But that is an intently personal matter to him and the Snyders.
For everyone else, it’s something else.

Being a fan doesn’t automatically imply blind support of every decision a team makes, or refusing to come down hard on the team and/or front office when the team is a taken in a direction with which you don’t agree. Obviously, being a fan means different things to different people. Not the time or place for this type of discussion, though.

..:Fear The Fin:..
Yes thats true, but in place where we discuss the good and the bad, those that harp on JUST the bad are trolls. We have rules against those people. I’m not saying Tina is a troll, hence the question. I dont see why you think its pointless or counterproductive. I think its more pointless and counterproductive to just spew venom or disregard good plays the team makes as well. You have to look at both sides. I am constantly annoyed with the fans on here that blindly criticize the team and those who blindly defend the right to blindly criticize.

To be fair, everyone cracks wise about the Red Wings being too old for about a season or two, before their next batch of sixth and seventh round draft picks turn into NHL All-Stars and they become a formidable force again. Never, ever count out the Wings for an extended period of time as long as Ken Holland is still the GM.

Yeah...
I’m not going to lie, It’s upsetting. I think you can understand the rest of NHL fans desire to finally see Detroit falter. As much as he’s impossibly good, I’m still clinging to the unconquerable time finally doing its damn job with him.

(and a bit off topic) but is the hatred most Sharks fans have for the Wings based on the players or the fans? everyone can chime in, wasn’t just directing it at you.

I hate douchey fans (of any team), my hatred of the Red Wings is more like that of an Arch-enemy. The team that has to exist as a counter. The dark side to our Force, if you will.
by animadiversion on Nov 30, 2010 11:48 AM PST up reply actions
50/50
For me anyway
The tin foil hats and the blatant goalie interference that never get called go most of the way towards my hatred.
Our record at the Joe is pretty shameful too.
You had to bring up the gorram Joe didn't you?
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Hard to hate the team outright
More a hatred of the success and the consistent level of play. As much as you guys probably haven’t forgotten last year or ‘94, we haven’t forgotten ’95 or 2007.
The fanbase is probably what gets most Sharks fans. It probably wasn’t as bad until last year when it seemed the “tin foil hat mentality” seemed to be most prevalent.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
A combination of the two. A little jealousy of the teams success, hatred for previous defeats. An enormous hatred of Wings fans continually bringing that up, the sense of entitlement we all seem to see from the group. Seriously, I read an article joking about planing a fucking parade in November and wasn’t at all surprised. I’d be shocked to see that on nearly any other blog (except Chicago). Not at all with Wings fans.
If we were 3 points up in the West and Plank posted an article about how nobody stands a chance against us we’d probably lynch him for the bad karma.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
More bad experiences with fans. The team frustrates me with the fact they’re constantly a thorn in our side, but I don’t hate them the way I hate the Ducks (suck) or (fuck the) Stars.
I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.
Fans.
I actually admire what the Wings as a team have been able to build and consistenty keep. It’s what every franchise should strive for…something I wish the Sharks could become. But we’ve had our successes against the Wings too, so they’re only mildly irritating on the ice.
But the fans really get my goat (is that still a phrase?). There are good ones, of course. But as a whole, I’ve had way worse experiences with Wings fans than with all other fanbases combined.

thanks, all.
I was just curious about that. I definitely understand everyone’s point of view on it, just wanted to see if it was like a lot of Chicago and St. Louis fans do and actually hate our players. I don’t think we really have all that many players that are hate-able for anything they do on the ice except for Bertuzzi or Holmstrom
by Casey Richey on Nov 30, 2010 11:54 AM PST up reply actions
I can hate Bertuzzi
I actually don’t hate Holmstrom. Yes, he interferes, but he also doesn’t. His job is to toe the line, and I respect what he does with it. You can’t do his job if you don’t “complain” a little bit. But he’s also damn good at what he does. It takes a lot of guts to park yourself in traffic areas and take the abuse. That rings stronger to me than any supposed “whining” he’s guilty of.
That being said, I’ll never cease to give him shit when he plays us.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
haha fair enough
Yeah how Holmstrom has made it this long in the NHL with the abuse he takes is kind of surprising.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I am jealous of the Wings’ sustained success and Cups, as well as the overwhelming respect that everyone in the league has for the organization (hearing how much your team/players/zamboni chokes year after year gets a bit tiring). I hate how the Sharks always lose at the Joe.
But really, it’s the small but vocal portion of the fanbase that really gets on my nerves. The Tin Foil Hat Society (especially when compared to the Wings’ recent dominance at home), the superiority complex, the whining about every single damn thing (“You’re from Western Canada, you shouldn’t pull that kind of crap”)… That transforms my jealousy and normal playoff/conference rival hatred into ZOMG I HATE THIS TEAM SO MUCH MAY A METEOR SHOWER RAIN DOWN UPON THE JOE hatred.

Oh boy...
The injuries to our already shaky defense has me a little worried tonight. I’ll be at HP and I have been PUMPED for this game since the beginning of the season. The Red Wings are the most hated team for me so taking it to them and winning in ANY way tonight is fine by me.
I’m curious how Niitty or Niemi will react to Holmstrom screening all game. Such a pest but he’s effective.
Heater is on a streak right now (which I also hope goes through Ottawa too- love to rub their noses in it haha) so if he can lead the way, I think we got this one.
GO SHARKS!!!!!
Yes. Very worried. This one is really going to test McLellan’s line-matching skills.
In a way, though, I like that the forwards and other defensemen, like Vlasic, are going to be forced to step up their games and play very complete games…or else suffer through a very miserable night. Hopefully they don’t have to face such pressure for too long, though.
And the best news from yesterday? It seems very clear that Demers’ injury isn’t that serious and should be back soon.
Yeah, thank god Demers’ isn’t seriously injured. It had me worried…
I feel like half our problem with the wings is we let them camp out in front of our goalie and no one does a damn thing to remove him. Maybe someone will figure out how to be Blake this game.

It's an interesting game
While Detroit is “unstoppable” according to the Tin Foil Clan, our Detroit “counterparts” (too generous?) are probably a little unnerved that we’ve dived our way to a heartless 6 points behind them. Sure, they have a game on us, and they don’t actually seem to suck, but that’s not exactly too much for bragging rights.
It’s weird. I thought our defensive (and unfortunately, offensive) struggles would have really put us into a bind early this season. Well, it has. But we’re also not completely out of it. Consistency is the key to the rest of this season… we can’t keep playing one good game, and then a string of bad ones. It would be great if we could start tonight.

Maybe they lost in solidarity with the Kings?
I doubt the Warriors can catch the Lakers anyway. I’m just glad they got Lee back. It’s pretty clear that regardless of his production, he’s one of the most vital parts of the team. At least with him, they have a shot of making the playoffs.
I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.
I hope the Warriors make the playoffs. Be nice for the Lakers to be able to take the first series off and still win in 4 games :-P
In all seriousness, though, I actually cheer for the Warriors when it doesn’t conflict with the Lakers…I’m just not particularly invested in it.

The Mavericks thought that a few years back, too. ;p
I actually think that if the Warriors make the playoffs, they’ll either do it on the last day or be the 6th or 7th seed; they don’t quite seem ready to hold someone off of the last spot. That means it’ll be a push to face the Lakers or a chance to maybe upset someone else. Either way, I’ll be happy with it. The team finally looks like it might consistently moving in the right direction. I’ll think about Warriors championships once they can make the playoffs more than one year at a time.

I’m hoping the Lakers do play the Dubs in the playoffs. I’d love to get to a Lakers playoff game…and there’s no chance of affording that at Staples.

I'm a Lakers fan as well, but I'd love to see the Warriors make it.
And to a lesser extent, the Kings as well. It’d be great to have an all California series, or just have all three of the teams in.

Garland should be a quality innings eater. I think the Uribe signing was shitty because of the length and the money (double whammy)…but at least he’s an upgrade over Theriot at 2nd, and can slide over to short when Furcal is hurt and 3rd when Blake gets old(er). Still need a corner outfielder, though.

The Dodgers signing Uribe kind of screwed the Giants, because their infield relied on his flexibility playing all the positions. But now you guys have that. Plus, he’s good for his signature Jazz Hands – clutch homers sprinkled among his swing-and-whiffs and pop-ups.
He’s also good for breaking up at least one no hitter/perfect game per year. And by that I mean his own team’s.

Hahaha, yeah, well, if he wants to go all amazing and win the Dodgers a World Series, I won’t complain. He does seem to swing for the fences every single time…which is amusing. His best attribute is his flexibility in the infield defensively. Solid everywhere, although not spectacular. An upgrade at 2nd, to be sure. Still…the money…wow.

If you notice, after every single homer/long fly, Uribe immediately drops the bat and pulls up his hands in a jazz hands-esque gesture. Hence, his nickname Jazz Hands.
And hey, at least he won’t be hitting any 9th inning homers against Broxton anymore. That should be worth something.

Ugh!
Since when did we have a reputation for being divers?
Seto is still out, so all of our potential divers have been accounted for.
As for uncalled goalie interference penalties, I think we might have a problem clearing the crease tonight.
I respect the Red Wings.
Just not the fans I’ve encountered.
In any event, tonight is going to be a tough one. We need to hope the defense can hold strong despite the damage showing all over the place. The forwards need to come with fire and passion. The Wings are probably going to be looking to put us in our place and we need to be looking to remind them we can finish them when it matters. No idea who’ll be in net yet, especially with the power out at the Tank and skates delayed, but I’m hoping for Nitty. We need the confidence he gives us.

(damn the mouse)..Thanks for being specific.
And good luck to both teams. May the best team win.
I celebrate Festivus!!!
I felt it was important to make the distinction (especially the “I’ve encountered”). The team is consistently good and any other team in the league should strive for that level of repeated success. And I’d guess that a lot of the fans are just fine as people.
But I repeatedly run into Wings fans who spend more of their time trying to make me feel like shit than celebrating their own success. Or showing any respect for the teams they play. Maybe it’s a symptom of them being so far from the team. I don’t know, but it makes it hard to keep a level head about the team’s other fans.

To the visitors from winginitmotown
You seem surprised by our response to the “swagger” article. I’m surprised you’re surprised. There’s an awful lot of “swagger” in that article for the month of November. Is it tongue in cheek? Probably… but if it is, expect to take some flack for it. Your fanbase has a reputation, and this article does very little to dispute it. Just remember, shit talk begets shit.
That being said, yes, at the quarter-pole, your team is the class of the league, and if the playoffs started today, I think you’d steamroll your way to a Cup.
But they don’t. The season is long, and tonight, our team faces its biggest challenge of the season. At this moment, they are underdogs, going up against a superior team, and have some internal adversity to overcome. They have injuries, players playing more minutes than they should, and a lot of underachievers.
Tonight, we find out what this team is made of.

This is a pretty crucial stretch in the season for us
And, to be fair, the constant inconsistency means new games become litmus tests. We thought we might have seen the “real” Sharks after LA, but then that road trip happened. We thought we might have seen the “real” Sharks after Chicago, but then Vancouver happened.
Honestly, as much as I want to be fired up about this team, they’re like the special needs kid that keeps needing to be retested…

I think this is at the crux of my season-long negativity. I just don’t know anymore sometimes with this team…
I was so fired up after LA, and it all came crashing down. I was cautiously optimistic after Chicago, and then Vancouver…
I genuinely was proud of the effort against Edmonton for all the in-game adversity they overcame.
But this game… for all the supposed litmus tests the team has had, this one is the real one, the one we could have circled at the start of the season because we knew the Wings would be good.

Exactly
This time last year, if I remember correctly, the Red Wings were injury ravaged and out of the playoff picture while the Sharks were tearing it up. Now the exact opposite has happened – the Red Wings are the class of the West (and the league) while most of the Sharks’ defense was playing in the AHL last week.
Posturing is all fine and dandy, but expect to get some flack for it when you’re doing so in November. Especially if you come over to an opponent’s blog, never mind an opponent’s blog that you have a contentious playoff history with.

Detroit is the first team this season I’m genuinely scared of playing, given the current state of the blueline and lack of offensive production from key players such as Seto. We’ve all seen what a healthy, motivated Sharks team can do to Detroit. That said, it’s a joy watching the Wings play hockey, and it’s a damn shame I have to dislike them so much. I think it’s safe to say the coaching staff and the fanbase are putting a lot of faith in our Worcester call-ups tonight, as a game against a surging Wings team is a hell of an introduction to the big leagues.

My cousin, a Wings fan, will be attending this game. He relayed a story recently about another game he went to. They were right by the glass, and he was flinging the typical anti-Thornton rigors during the pregame warmup (“No-Show Joe”, “Play like it’s may”, etc). Joe gave ’em an eye and skated off.
Just before the armup ended, Joe skated by one last time, looked right at him, and pushed a puck over the glass for him. Class act.

Sharks v. Wings...
Usually I get up for these games, but today, I must admit, I don’t feel the electricity…the spark, if you will, that these matchups usually bring.
First, with DISH Network in a pissing match with CSN CA, I won’t get to watch it. That hurts. I guess I could always go find a stream, but that shit sucks. Maybe I’ll go out to a bar and get smashed. That’s always an option…
Next, the Wings are pretty much awesome right now…and the Sharks have an AHL defense. To say I’m a little concerned with our ability to compete tonight would be an understatement.
Third, we just slaughtered them in the playoffs…and after being at game 5, I’m pretty sure a simple regular season matchup cannot live up to what I experienced last postseason. Yes, that win set me up for a huge fall the next series, but at the time, it was bliss.
Needless to say, we’re going to need one of those 6-5, back and forth kinds of games with no defense showing up to compete tonight, I fear. Not sure if we’re capable of 6, but we should be. The offense isn’t hurt.
Then again, the Sharks have shown that they will show up for home games against premier opponents (you know, looking back, LA and Chicago both suck right now too…although I’m still convinced that we caused LA to suck by crushing their souls with that epic victory). So we’ll see.
Finally, on that article on WIIM…well, I’m pretty sure that has to be tongue in cheek. Although, I’m not surprised if it is not. There is but one fanbase that, on the whole, has shown us that they are complete assclowns quite consistently. Yes, there are some good fans, but by and large, the fanbase as a whole can be lumped into the category of “arrogant jackassery.” So, yeah, hearing them cry after they lose is always music to my ears. Be nice if the Sharks can make that happen tonight.

Am I wrong though? I don’t see a San Jose team that’s getting closer to a Stanley Cup, I see one getting farther away from it. Talk about last year and injuries and whatnot all you want, but even when the Wings were healthy, they weren’t this good.
Yeah, the Sharks could take Detroit in a seven game series… maybe as many as three times out of ten, but it’s going to take getting good luck on their part as opposed to avoiding bad luck on the Wings’ part.
Skilletboy – “class, class, class, class, class” such a ridiculous argument to make when talking about fanatics. Where’s the handbook that tells me I need to hold your top hat and help you polish your monocle? Class is for people who don’t know how to have fun. Class is what people clamor for when they don’t have anything interesting to say online but have the overwhelming desire to say something.
For the last time people, it’s Nicklas Lidstrom. Not Niklas, not Lindstrom. The least you classy fellas can do is show the proper respect to the greatest defenseman of your generation by spelling his name right.

You know at this time I DO want a rematch in the playoffs, and I want the Sharks to beat the Red Wings and I want to feast on your tears because then who really is the choker? You’re setting yourself up for doom if the wings do not win the Cup, I know I for one will be sure to cite this article with every loss :)

I can live with that
I can even live with being told I’m just making excuses when luck, injuries, and reffing is what does it. The Sharks don’t have the talent to hang with the Wings.
I would certainly hope you would want all of those things though. I want the same for my team. That’s what makes us fans.

Serious question for you
Why do you believe that we (Wing fans) are coming over here to “win people over” to our way of thinking? Do you honestly believe that we’re here to convert you all to Wing fans? If everyone was a Wing fan, the world would be a very boring place; we need the hate.
As far as I can tell, your editor posted a link to an article that JJ wrote. You took exception to the tone and content of the article (as I would expect), and any Wing fan that comes over here is a “troll”? What if we just want to discuss the game tonight between the #1 current team in the West and a team that still has Stanley Cup aspirations? Are we not allowed to do that here? I thought that this was a forum for discussion, but it seems like all you want to do is shut down any talk from a Wing fan before it even begins.
I guess that’s what happens when all Shark fans have such an inferiority complex (see what I did there?).
Skillet

the difference is we are discussing our dislike over the tone and content of the article on our own blog. We didn’t go over there and say how much we hate it. Yet wings fans must come over to our blog and tell us how our dislike in the article is completely baseless and therefore we have an inferiority complex. That’s the problem here.

Nitty has played exceptionally well this year. If he can keep it up or be the same in April, then he’ll be on par with if not above Nabby last year. While losing Malhotra has hurt a little bit in face-offs, this team is still 2nd in the league in face-offs. Blake’s loss has affected this team the most this year, but if/when the Sharks are able to acquire a Top 4 guy, the defense is going to be much more solid. Hoping we can get a d-man in time and that Nitty can keep up his hot play may be unrealistic, but when that happens you’re looking at a team that is as good if not better than the one that took you guys out in 5.

About what? About no team in the West on paper scaring you? Probably. Point being, it’s November. Any talk of going anywhere at this point in the season is useless. As much success as your franchise has had, they’ve had failures as well. So honestly, as a Wing fan, you should know better.
The least you classy fellas can do is show the proper respect to the greatest defenseman of your generation by spelling his name right.
This is mainly a for fun argument, but I think Scott Niedermayer (whose name is equally as confuddling at times) would take issue. The Norris keeps going to Nick, and it’s not like he doesn’t deserve them, but, I honestly wonder how much of that is just the NHL doing the same thing over and over. No question Lidstrom is a great defenseman, one of the all-time greats, first ballot hall of famer, living legend. I just can’t help but give Niedermayer his due.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Niedermayer was a fantastic defenseman
But trying to honestly argue that he’s better than Nick Lidstrom is a serious uphill battle.
Lidstrom really is as good as advertised. The whole thing about the NHL just doing the same thing over and over is something about which I heartily disagree. Chara won the Norris simply because Lidstrom didn’t live up to the standard that Lidstrom set for himself. Chara was not a better defenseman. Phaneuf won it because the Canadian media (who mostly makes up the people who vote for the award, not the NHL) love the story of a Canadian boy who plays like the Canadian boys they grew up watching. Lidstrom’s career is actually BETTER than his Norris count, not worse.
Point being, it’s November. Any talk of going anywhere at this point in the season is useless.

since when does usefulness come into play?
Nowhere. I’m just pointing out that if you think your post on your fan blog is somehow fact rather than opinion, there might be a problem. You have some evidence on your side that the Wings are favorites for the Cup, but the tone of your posting made it seem as though it was a done deal. Again, it’s November. Season is long. We’ve all seen things happen over the course of a season.
If you wanted to write about the virtues of this current Red Wings team, that’s one thing, and no one here would fault you for it. But you took the step further of actively slamming your opposition. As your opposition, we take exception.
Just so long as that’s clear, you’ll understand our “hostility.”
That post was all about fightin’ words. And I’ll give you some credit for coming here to defend them. But, as I said earlier, shit talking begets shit.

Eh, anyone going to another blog and expecting the level of writing and discourse we usually have here at FTF will be sorely disappointed. Other blogs, IMO, can write what they want. If Detroit wants to spout off on their own blog that they are going to march to the Cup, fine. As long as they don’t bring it here, to our blog, where we don’t want to hear about that shit…
Unfortunately, this has not stayed on their blog, and that makes me sad. I miss the intellectual hockey conversations we had been having prior to this game and the invasion by Wings fans (who, for some reason, feel the need to drag this blog’s conversation down to their level…and we’re letting them).

My last comment here
You say that other blogs need to leave it there, but it was your editor that linked the article and then your commenters that started to discuss its lack of “class” and how it was too early to make such bold statements.
If you think that other fans aren’t going to check out FTF on gameday, then I don’t know what to tell you. Last I checked, this was a public forum and we were free to make comments. If we are not welcome, fine. But just because we have made our way over here (to a good blog, BTW), we are “trolls”?
I’m all for good discussion about the game, but it sure seems like if any Wing fan headed over here, they’d be shut down or called a “troll” simply for looking at the game with red-and-white glasses. I guess if this is the way that you guys operate around here, we’ll just have our people stay away. You guys are more than welcome to head on over to WiiM; you’ll find some really intelligent conversation there about hockey.
To be fair. I’d really like to see Plank defend his article. He is the one that started this discussion.

My "defense"
I think JJ was trying to pull his best impression of the Chief from A2Y since he’s leaving to admirably serve our country this week. It seemed juvenile and low brow to me, but if JJ wants to write like that, he has every right to do so. If it doesn’t bother him that other people feel that way about that specific piece than that’s his prerogative, just like it’s my prerogative to disagree with his opinion. And your prerogative to disagree with it as well.

See? I knew it
I knew writing the thing that somebody was going to use the “Chief Lite” thing. I don’t really have a defense for that because I look up to him both as a writer and as a human being. I don’t try to model myself after what he’s got going on (as evidenced by my body of work so far), but I’m not going to shy away from it if I end up sounding like him from time to time.
Nobody will ever be able to do what he does as well and I don’t really want to try. That piece was just how I’m feeling about the Wings.

Listen, I don’t have a problem with the article in and of itself. Its a Wings blog, I really don’t give a shit. I laughed when I read it. Whatever. I don’t have a problem with Plank linking it here for us to discuss from a Sharks POV here on our blog either. I do have a problem with fans from other blogs coming in to start shit. And while not everyone has done that, I can’t deny that things here deteriorated when Wings fans came over and started trying to defend an article where its is not only stated that the Wings are the best team ever, but that other teams (including the Sharks, who were mentioned in a rather negative light) were all shit. And saying the Sharks have no heart, that’s just asking for trouble over here. If no one had tried to make us believe that the article had merit to FTF readers, this never gets to this point.
Obviously some people here are also a little sensitive, but Wings fans who came over didn’t do anything themselved to quell the situation they had created. They egged it on.
Needless to say, FTF’s gamedays usually have a high level of discourse. Today it didn’t, and there’s really only one difference to all the other gamedays. I have no problem personally with fans of other teams coming here to chat. I do have a problem with fans of other teams coming over here to talk shit and be assholes. But that’s just me, I don’t speak for anyone else here.

I think it was pretty dead-on.
I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.
I'm back
Fair enough. Like I said, I don’t expect Sharks fans (or any other fans, for that matter) to read that article and say “huh, he’s got a real point there”. The fact that all of you are defending your team speaks to your commitment as fans, and I respect the hell out of that.
Here’s my issue. You say that Shark fans discussed it, when all they did was call it “classless”. The first Wing fans to comment were Casey (the editor at WIIM) and Tulo, who is a good fan. They simply responded to some of the comments, with Casey noting that JJ is a good writer, regardless of what some people thought of the content. They were then engaged by others who called them “trolls”. I’d argue that the “deterioration” of the gameday thread can be blamed on both sides, not just on Wing fans.
I won’t sit here and say that bond’s comment was classy, and I called him out both here and on WIIM for it. He made it for his own reasons and apologized for it, and if your mods feel it is appropriate, they can take action against him by banning him.
But I argue that Tulo and Casey tried to move on, but people like skillet wouldn’t let it go. That’s not on the Wing fans that tried to have a conversation, that’s on the Shark fans who got upset at a Wing article on a Wing blog.
Here’s a thought for some people: if you had a real problem with JJ’s article, head on over to WIIM and let him know. He’s a big boy and he can take the criticism. If you think that he’s wrong, then post a response that explains why you feel that way, not just say “all Wing fans are douchebags and this article is proof”. Red Wing fans are often accused of being overly sensitive, but it sure seems like a post written in November got under your skins a lot more than it should have.
This is a good blog, and I enjoy the conversations. If you feel that Wing fans are somehow ruining what you’ve got going, then I feel sorry for you, because we have some really great discussions over at WIIM. Try not to let a few bad apples colour your opinion of all Wing fans; if I did that, I’d think that all Shark fans are like your boy skillet there and unable to engage in any civil conversation with opposing fans.
Good luck tonight! Here’s hoping it’s a good game.

Two lines and they’re tripping over themselves. FTF wasn’t this touchy during the playoffs last year. I was in here during most of the gamethreads in that series and it was pretty fun. Aw, Avs fans
I think they prepped us for the tin foil hat brigade last spring. We were almost numb from them before we ran into the Detroit version.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
In fairness
I gave everybody the chance to have that witty and intelligent conversation for which you longed when I asked if I was wrong in what I said about seeing that Detroit is a better team than San Jose and it got sidetracked to a conversation about class. I was engaged by one commenter here (ElvisVF101) on that point and I think that part of our conversation went exceedingly well.
by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 30, 2010 1:41 PM PST up reply actions
Well, I’m probably the perfect person for you to ask a question about Detroit vs. San Jose to (if you want someone from a different fan base to back up your opinion), since all season I’ve pretty much been of the opinion that the Sharks are not a Stanley Cup contender and will actually even struggle just to make the playoffs. And I believe it is because our defense sucks and is a bottom 5 unit as a whole. Needless to say, that’s not a popular opinion around here, but I’m able to express my opinion (I’d hope, anyways) without being a huge dick, so we can talk about it.
However, saying that we lack heart is something that Sharks fans will always take personally, because of all the shit we’ve taken from the national media hacks every single time we don’t win a stanley cup (which, it turns out, is pretty hard to do).
So if you wanted to have a discussion about whether the Wings are better than the Sharks, well, that’s fine. It just seems like people have been going about it in a rather antagonistic way. Whatever.

Well
I’m sorry if the heart comments get you guys so riled up, but I personally have a hard time arguing against that opinion. I mean, sure, it seems like a cop-out lazy piece of shit thing to write when you don’t know more, but really, the team in Teal should have a cup by now and they don’t. I know winning it is hard, but it’s something that teams find a way to do and they haven’t. When you have an absence of obvious answers, you’re forced to look at the negative space – what’s missing from the team? It’s hard not to say that they just don’t have the right collection of guys who hate losing enough to avoid doing it.
I think it was Behind the Net who did a post about the Sharks’ defense getting worse in a “Better Late Than Never” post (interestingly enough, I found that because an Avs fan at Mile High Hockey was so offended that Gabe Desjardins was so mean and negative in his statistical analysis of the Avs versus the Sharks, Wild, and Blue jackets that he “objectively scored” every sentence the guy wrote in four articles to PROVE that he was a big meanie.
by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 30, 2010 1:53 PM PST up reply actions
It’s hard not to say that they just don’t have the right collection of guys who hate losing enough to avoid doing it.
Considering how much the team has changed year over year, it makes the “grit” argument hold less water in my eyes. That being said, yes, the Sharks lose too often when they should win. The offense goes dry in the post season for a variety of different issues that are somewhat complex, but if someone wanted to boil them down to one or two words, they could be “grit” and “heart.”
The fact that many people use those words in pejorative arguments against the Sharks blurs everything. It’s a complicated issue people want to make simple.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I'd call that human nature
We like to simplify complicated issues. Ask most people what the Civil War was about and you’re not likely to find a ton of strangers who are going to stop and take 30 minutes to discuss the ramifications of distribution of wealth, agrarian versus industrial changes to the mores of two regions which were growing culturally separate, the concept of an individual’s rights superseding states’ rights superseding federal rights, and the hypocrisy of calling oneself “enlightened” while denigrading an entire race (as well as tons of other smaller issues).
What you’re going to get is somebody saying “uhh… slavery”.
The two biggest problems I see with the Sharks is that their defensive core is gotten worse and that they seem to lack the intangibles that separate a winning squad from an also-ran. Yeah, there are tons of things to be discussed there and I’m sure that you all have done that ad nauseum around here. On a Wings blog, in an article about swagger, you’re going to get the simple answers.
by J.J. from Kansas on Nov 30, 2010 2:13 PM PST up reply actions
And on a Sharks blog, those simple answers are going to be bitched about and (in an ideal world) proven wrong and torn down (although I’m not sure we got that far today).

I'm sorry for using an old, tired argument you probably hear a lot.
But it took even the great Stevie Y to win a Cup when Detroit had some good, Cup-worthy teams. One of those years was even caused by our Sharks. At any rate, I think the “heart” and “grit” arguments are old and overused (kind of like mine at the beginning!), and just don’t apply as this team has shown it has plenty of heart.

As soon as I saw that I knew there had to be some Red Wings fans in the comments section!
Somehow slipped my mind that the Wings were on tap today. Should I cut my day “short” and head home from the office after 10 hours, or put in the 12 hour day and just get the radio broadcast here?
SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!
FUK THE RED WINGS!
Maybe its just cause Im new here, but it boggles my mind why anyone would say their team would win a division or the cup this early in the season and not think its goating/shit talk. Perhaps next time you take a crap, wipe your face, pop a tic-tac and look at the calendar. Reaction over.
It would be awesome to see the Sharks pull off a win tonight with all the call-ups. SHARKS!!!
Wow
Did a Wings fan really just tell a Sharks fan that he was living in the past?! That is classic! The two die-hard Wings fans that I know couldn’t help but tell me over and over again last year as we dominated Detroit that none of it mattered because of all the Cups the Wings had won. Ha ha…. go Sharks! And Worcester Sharks, because we pretty much have half of that team playing tonight too!
Something I was thinking about...
The Sharks and Red Wings have the two longest streaks of making the playoffs in the West (the team between them is the Devils, in the East). Seems unlikely that the Wings are going to miss the playoffs. Also seems unlikely the Devils will make them (though they’ve still got time if they pull a total 180). It’d be a shame if the Sharks lost their streak this year. It’s a huge deal to be able to say that the only team with a longer active streak of playoff appearances is one of the Original Six and probably the best overall team in the league in the last twenty years. It’s pretty rare company.
I’m hoping the boys in teal are aware of that on some level and come to play tonight and for the rest of the year.
I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.
yeah you never with the Devils
although they seem lost and out of it the bottom of the East isn’t exactly the best of the best they could sneak in as an 8 seed…I hope they end at the bottom of the barrel though.

I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.
Well that is the recipe for success nowadays yeah?
Pittsburgh Penguins: Evgeni Malkin (2nd overall, 2004), Sidney Crosby (1st overall, 2005)
Chicago Blackhawks: Jonathan Toews (3rd overall, 2006), Patrick Kane (1st overall, 2007)
So five years is about right…
"You would definitely hate the Ducks more than you'd hate the Kings, right?"
"Yeah, definitely." - Joe Pavelski
"Burnside seems to hate these guys. Oh wait ... I seem to love these guys!" - Pierre LeBrun
Eh
The Hawks only won because of amazing players they compiled around Kane/Toews. So if Edmonton can pull that off, then perhaps. Kane/Toews are over rated IMO, definitely not worthy of back to back NHL game covers >_>
I agree in general
My comment is more tongue-in-cheek than anything, but I wouldn’t say that Kane and Toews are overrated. I think that the success of their team is definitely overcredited as relative to the contributions of the D-corps and role players (e.g. Buff, ugh), but not overrated. To put it in perspective, Kane and Toews had 29 and 28 points in 22 GP in the playoffs last year respectively.
As for the NHL10/11 thing, yeah, that was a little wack, but that kinda just boils down to circumstances (even if you just showcased Kane in 10, why wouldn’t EA not go with the Conn Smythe winning captain the year after?)
"You would definitely hate the Ducks more than you'd hate the Kings, right?"

I cheer for the Caps in the East…and from that perspective, I’d love nothing more than for the Devils to sneak into the 8 seed. I don’t see them as being much of a challenge this season. Although, it’s still early….never know what will happen once Parise gets back.

The Sharks are heartless, gritless and don’t know how to win? I think you can accept that.
The same Sharks beat a completely healthy Red Wings team last year in the playoffs.
So the Wings, who are basically the same team this year as last year, lost to the Sharks last year (in only 5 games) who are basically the same team.
So the has the Wings window closed? Have they forgotten how to win? Maybe they lost their Heart and Grit? I just don’t understand how a team that “Knows how to win” lost to a team that doesn’t know how to win in a series… I mean, if we’re going to call 5 games a series.

I would say that neither the Sharks nor the Wings are basically the same team as last year. I’ll probably stay in denial for a long time after our best defenseman calls it quits too, since it will take a lot from the Wings, but Blake’s loss is huge.
Aside from that, “healthy” and “tired from a long stretch of catch-up hockey” are not interchangeable.
Wings added some key guys and dropped some key dead weight. They’re a better team than last year.
Also, the diving helped… a lot.

Because we were younger, fresher, healthier and better also helped.

Wait, I think I get it finally. I know how to measure diving and grit.
The more you dive, the more you win. This is evidenced by the Wings (long the poster child for ref favortism) winning, followed by the Penguins (who have Crysby).
Last year we beat the Wings by diving.
Diving is heart and grit.
Got it, thanks for helping me straight.

Gotta say, the “tired from a long stretch of catch-up hockey” is kind of a cop-out excuse. Yeah they had to go on a tear at the end of the season to even make the playoffs, but so what? You know what other team had to go on a tear at the end of the season to make the playoffs? The San Francisco Giants. They weren’t in a playoff spot for most of the season, went on a tear in September to clinch a spot on the last day of the season, and won the freaking World Series. Yeah, baseball and hockey are different sports, but surely the mental fatigue is the same. And a team with little playoff experience was able to overcome it, yet somehow the Red Wings – the closest thing to a dynasty in the current NHL – were not.
Sharks were the better team last year. Maybe not by a lot, but they were.

In all seriousness though, the Wings-Sharks series was a lot closer than that 4-1 series score indicated. Surprisingly, I feel like that 4-0 series was even closer. I’ll admit, we were completely out played in Game 2, but the other ones were frustratingly close.
Also, we have a tendency to not shoot off the ice.. hence Niemi became the second coming of Hiller (who was ACTUALLY good).
And the bounces did seem to go Chicago’s way. You need some luck to win Cups… and they got it.

I’m working like 50 hours a day this week, and have been putting in a lot of hours over the past couple weeks. Frankly, I don’t have time to read every single comment here although I wish I did.
For those asking for more banning on the site, flag people. It’s the easiest way for the mods and I to see things. I dropped the ball completely when it came to buttercrunch, and even though he didn’t receive a lot of flags, I tried to give him a chance and it didn’t work. Maybe that’s where some of you are coming from.
At any rate, here’s what my blog management dashboard is showing today:

Six troll flags, four people. That little magnifying glass allows me to see the comment, and gives me an opportunity to go and read the comment string. Two flags a pop is probably going to get someone a warning, and if that individual continues to get flagged, he gets banned.
I don’t really know what to do other than that. I wish I could get paid to do this full-time, but the fact of the matter is, I can’t. What I can tell you is that every chain of comments on here gets set off by people firing hard back at someone they disagree with, with gives that “troll” or “spammer” a floor for their opinion. I have yet to see a situation where a troll spews off ten comments in a row without a response.
If you want to disagree with them, fine. But understand that they’re probably going to disagree with you as well. It’s the internet. Shit fucking happens. Flag it and move on.

Thanks for the feedback Plank.
I appreciate the transparency on the process and all.

I think you and TCY are doing a heckuva a job with all of your added responsibilities
I wonder if you might revisit the “community guidelines” thread to address the trolling issue and how readers should best get in touch with one of the mods if they feel discussions are devolving and trolling becomes more rampant.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
In all seriousness I’d like to start a thread or fan post to discuss this issue of what to do when trolls or rude opposing fans show up.
If anything else to get everybody on the same page.
And I’d really like to discuss at another time what peoples thoughts are regarding what is and what isn’t trolling.

I think that’s a good idea. I think having the conversation in the middle of these situations where people are already on edge isn’t working.

Skillet and Elvis
Those are good ideas. I’ll have idunno set one up in the Fanposts for tomorrow when things have cooled down.

Awesome
Cause I need a better understanding on the difference between trolling and heated entertaining reading.. somethings said today should’ve been in a bar so you can take it outside, not hiding behind the keyboard, but I dont want to flag anyone without understanding fully what that entails..

Brilliant
E-fight, where pressing control-alt-del sends surges of electrical shocks to your opponents keyboard, whoever pisses themselves first looses! I like it, Im sure there would be a market.

There was definitely some overreaction today.
On a side note, it’s rather disappointing that you and TCY don’t show up on GDT’s as often.

I’d say this was like saying bloody mary into a mirror, but it’d probably just be taken as another ad for Absolut.

The Absolut stuff?
No clue. Unless it was really just that they were trying to associate bloody marys with football starting. Which seems dumb and unlikely to actually occur.

To reiterate what Elvis said, you guys are doing a great job, and yes it does suck to not see you guys in Gameday threads anymore :(
As was mentioned before, (by elvis i think) we should be able to caution and temper down ourselves for the most part. I will admit to getting rather into it with several of the WIIM people and generally stopped once FtF readers asked me to. I’m not sure there really is anything to do about others coming to this site and being generally douche-y beyond what you said aka flagging them. That being said, we could always just choose to ignore them, as hard as that sounds. I know I’m usually one of hte first to respond but if we decide to be the bigger site (?) about this we can just disregard all comments that are like that. I dunno…

I’m fine with disregarding and flagging. I was doing that for the most part.
But if nothing happens as a result, then suddenly the trolls win and those of us that want to talk with other Sharks fans are run off.
I take issue when visiting teams fans take over and I have to choose between leaving FTF or spending my time arguing that Jumbo isn’t a choker, we don’t dive, etc etc.

I think it should also be pointed out that disagreeing fans of other teams doesn’t not necessarily mean trolling … but that’s just my opinion clearly. :)

In all seriousness
I think Nitty is gonna have to come up big and early in this game. If he can we have a chance.
I’m looking at Jumbo to have a big game. He always seems to get fired up for the Wings.
Also I feel like Logan Couture could be a big factor in this game.
I winder if Howard has nightmares about giving up that softie to Cooch from last year. ;)
