Heatley returns to Ottawa, Sharks shut out Sens 4-0

Tonight, a former Ottawa hockey player who left town to join the San Jose Sharks organization returned for the first time since leaving. He scored two goals. Welcome back, Logan Couture.

Oh, right, Dany Heatley.

Tonight’s game was possibly the most talked-about game leading up to the drop of the puck for the Sharks in a number of years. Ever since the schedules were put out, people around the league marked December 2 on their calendars – the day that Dany Heatley returned to Ottawa, the city he spurned. For a team that usually flies under the radar of the league outside of quick playoff failure jokes, the almost undivided attention the hockey world had towards this game was unfamiliar. "Heatley" was a top trending topic on Twitter in both Canada and San Francisco. Seemingly every general NHL reporter out there filed a story on the match up. It was, in a phrase, a big deal.

Predictably, Senators fans in attendance booed Heatley whenever he touched the puck, a practice that Sharks fans have already witnessed in Edmonton this year. However, they went a few steps farther: they also booed him whenever he stepped onto the ice, something that I rather appreciated as I tried to make out the numbers on a fuzzy television reception. A group of Senators fans (including one in a "Leafs Suck" #19 sweater) even went as far as throwing their old Heatley sweaters onto the ice as the two teams were getting ready for a faceoff in the third.

As a side note: I was always under the impression that anything thrown onto the ice besides a hat would give the home team a two minute delay of game penalty. Not sure why this rule is no longer being upheld.

Dany Heatley was not the goal-scoring force that people expected/hoped him to be tonight, recording only one assist. However, he had two different breakaways where he was hooked before getting a shot off, drawing a penalty on both. The Sharks subsequently went 2-for-2 on the power play, one of the goals a Patrick Marleau tally off of a Dan Boyle rebound, and the other being Justin Braun’s first NHL goal, a shot from the high slot. The Braun goal went under review for a potential high stick, but in a first for this season, a Sharks goal under review stood up.

Speaking of Justin Braun, he rebounded extremely well from a sub-par game against the Detroit Red Wings. Thrust into a top four role since his second NHL game, he’s taken the chance and shown considerable ability. His shot from the point that more often than not gets through to the goalie is something that was sorely missed after Rob Blake’s retirement, and his defense is getting better with every game. He now has four points in four games as a defenseman, and while he likely won’t keep this pace up, he’s definitely making a case to stay in the NHL after Jason Demers, Kent Huskins, and Niclas Wallin return from injury.

Star-divide

Switching to the other standout Sharks rookie, on TSN, the broadcasters called Logan Couture "the best three zone rookie" in the league. Couture backed that statement up, scoring two goals and continuing to impress in his role of newly-ordained second line center. After his first goal, a big cheer went up for the former Ottawa 67s captain. After his second, Pierre McGuire dubbed him a "monster," which is the greatest honor McGuire can bestow upon a player. Ladies and gentlemen, Logan Couture has officially arrived.

After Couture’s second and the Sharks’ fourth goal, all energy and drive seemed to have left the Ottawa Senators. Sure, there were a few scoring chances generated, but none of that intensity that was prevalent through the first two periods of the game. Even the crowd was out of it, electing to only boo Heatley when he had the puck, rather than whenever he was on the ice as it was during the first two periods.

Antti Niemi had by far his best start as a Shark. Not only did he record the first shutout of the year for the Sharks – making 28 saves in the effort – but he made several fantastic saves to preserve that achievement. His newly-found glove hand was making a presence. There was a notable save in the first period that saw the Senators with a 2-on-1, with the lone Sharks defenseman playing the player with the puck rather than the pass. The Sens player was able to get off the pass, but Niemi somehow got over and made the save with his glove.

Also notable was how he froze the puck whenever the Sens were pressing; before, he would shoot out rebounds for the Sharks defensemen to pick up and transition out of the zone with – well, at least, that was the intent. More often than not the opposition would get the rebound and have another scoring chance, or a goal. Tonight saw Niemi freeze the puck and let the second-best faceoff team in the league do their work, which has proven to be much more successful.

The top line of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Dany Heatley may have only scored one point each, but they were flat-out dominant tonight. For the first part of the game, Senators coach Cory Clouston matched up top line with top line, but late in the second period he switched the matchup to the other lines because the match up was so ineffective. There was a point where Heatley, Marleau, and Thornton had the puck in the Senators’ zone in the third period, and all they did with it was play keep-away for a minute or two. No shots, just a bunch of fancy passes and nifty skating moves. "They’re going Globetrotters on them right now," said Pierre McGuire. Joe Thornton was a backchecking machine in particular; there was one shift where he alone generated two turnovers purely through hard work.

But it wasn’t just the top line that played well against the Senators; all four lines hemmed the Senators in their zone throughout the game. The Ferriero-Couture-Clowe line in particular played extremely well, and Couture had two goals to show for it. The McGinn-Pavelski-Mitchell line had a great forecheck going all night, with a few chances by Pavelski in particular that almost went in. Each member of the fourth line – Jamal Mayers, Scott Nichol, and John McCarthy – had a breakaway at one point or another, but none buried it.

One of the most impressive aspects of tonight’s game by the Sharks was their overall commitment to defense. Each player forechecked, backchecked, pokechecked, and every other type of check in between. There were a few defensive gaffes, particularly ones that led to an odd-man rush the other way, but Niemi was able to stand tall. Despite having three rookie defensemen, the Sharks were able to shut the Senators down. If they continue to play that way, not many teams can beat them.

Tonight’s game was a good bounce back from the loss against Detroit; a good, all-around effort that saw every member of the team play hard. It follows the trend of the Sharks supporting their own, whether it be helping Niittymaki and Niemi recording wins over the Lightning and Blackhawks respectively, or getting Dany Heatley a win against a town who doesn’t like him all that much. The question is now whether or not the Sharks can continue that level of play without needing an extra motivating factor, as they will not be having one most nights.

That said, tonight’s win was a great one, and was a reminder of how the Sharks can play when they’re on. Go Sharks.

Notes: According to David Pollak, fifteen of Ryane Clowe’s friends showed up to the game wearing San Jose Sharks Heatley sweaters… Three of the Sharks’ six defensemen tonight – Justin Braun, Derek Joslin, and Mike Moore – have a combined 53 games in the NHL. Derek Joslin has 44 of those games alone… Tonight marked Ottawa native Dan Boyle’s 700th game in the league.

It’s like LeBron James going back to Cleveland, except it’s hockey (also Heatley isn’t a complete asshole) which makes it infinitely more fun to watch.

Senators fans will disagree vehemently with that second point. I can’t say they’re all that wrong, but it sure as hell made that game fun to watch.

Awesome game

This is the game I’ve been waiting to see this team play for weeks! The whole team playing a great 3 periods of hockey was so so good to see.

Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.

Good game.

I could have watched it again and again (and likely will watch it at least once more in the near future). The team seemed to have learned something from the Detroit loss; they re-committed to the d and it showed. They looked like everyone was playing the same game at the same time again, too.

I’m definitely on board with Braun sticking around. I’m sure he’ll hit a phase where he’s not producing like this, but as long as he’s working as hard as he has been, I think he’s worth keeping with the team. He’s got a lot of aspects in common with Demers, I think, and that’s definitely a good thing.

Couture was a beast tonight and got rewarded for all the hard play he’s been putting in. Like I said in the GDT, he may say he’s not after the Calder, but he shines when the spotlight’s on. Neemo played like a goalie who can win the big game, and I had to nod in agreement when Randy and Drew discussed how his work with Schwab is changing his game and addressing some of his flaws.

The name of the game is still consistency. Lots of little pieces have been falling into place lately, but we need the big one, now, if we’re gonna say we’re legit. Bringing it against Montreal (super early in the day, no less) will be a good first step.

Yeah, I was impressed with Niemi’s saves as well – though I only saw the first period (grumblegrumble-longstory) but he looked great. I’m glad his style of play is changing and becoming stronger, I’m glad he’s been open to it and clearly ready to learn – makes me respect him muchly. Also, though I thought T-Mac was crazy for changing up the goaltending, it was apparently the right choice! Awesome work on his part. Perhaps Niemi does play better when stuff gets to have more pressure on it

I think Braun will stick around as well.

Which brings up something I've been wondering about...

We’ve all heard about how hard Niemi’s been working with Cory Schwab and we’ve seen the results. He’s definitely improving. So my question is this…does Chicago not have goalie coaches?

by MisguidedAngel on Dec 3, 2010 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

San Jose is very well known for fantastic goalie coaches. We have one of the best goalie pipelines with consistent stars. And its probably a different take of the matter as well as the fact that the Chicago coaches only worked with him for so long, trying to get him to fit in with their system, which he did quite well.

by animadiversion on Dec 3, 2010 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

It’s more that being a goalie requires constant work and constant coaching with outside opinions on your style and technique. We saw Nabby decline after we lost Strelow and Schwabb spent more time with the kids (who were great last year). Now this year Schwabb has been spending a ton of time with our big club starters and not so much with the younger guys and they’re struggling a little.

Honestly, I wish Irbe weren't with the Caps.

I think if we had him and Schwab, we’d have two good goalie coaches, which would help the problem a lot. I’d say Irbe stays with the big club and Schwab hangs with the kids, as he’s got more rapport with them. Doubt Irbe will leave the Caps any time soon, though.

Though it also just pains me to see Irbe with anyone else.

It does pain me to see Irbe with them, however, I have high hopes of seeing Nabby be the goaltending coach out here in the near future. And if the price of getting Nabby is letting Irbe go, I’ll live with it.

by animadiversion on Dec 3, 2010 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

I'd be happy to have Nabby.

I just figure he’ll want to play for another four or five years, where Irbe is comparatively free to coach now.

I dunno, the way things are going, you might imagine SKA buys out his contract or something. He is not playing too well right now.

by animadiversion on Dec 3, 2010 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

Russian contracts?

I’m wondering that, too. The Russians have a tendency to buy out the contracts (fire them) of poorly performing players.
Would have to ask our Russian correspondent (Ivano M?) about the structures of their contracts. Maybe having performance clauses. I did hear of the 75-25% of some of them, where they only get 75% of the contract for season play, and the other 25% based on playoff performance.
Don’t ask me to cite references, as this is just my (maybe flawed) memory of something I read about a former NHLer’s new Russian contract, during this past offseason.

Jamie Baker said that Clowie flew his friends in from Newfoundland and provided the jerseys, so he and Dan gave him honorable mention for their three stars of the night.

As usual, great write up to follow a fantastic game. I’m really enjoying watching the young Sharks contribute on the ice. I hope Braun can keep it up and continue getting shots to the net. Go Lo-Cat and J-Braun (do either of them have good nicknames yet?).

This game

Might be a catalyst for this sharks team. I think if they can take what they’ve done in this game, they will start leapfrogging over teams in the west, and hopefully back near the top. Also, when any object thrown onto the ice that isn’t for a hat trick, the home team should be awarded a 2 minute delay of game penalty (see video screen at HP Pavilion before any game). I’m not sure those refs read the rule books, or were just afraid of having Dany Heatley draw another penalty. The rabid fans might hunt them down. All in all, I loved watching this game. From Couture being a boss to Niemi finding a goose-egg on his score sheet, this was truly one of the best efforts from the Sharks this season. Hope to see this on Saturday and the entire road trip / season. Go Sharks!

We’ve said this many, many times before. After the big LA win. After the big Chicago win. Let’s not overreact to one win against a bad team with a huge motivating factor for the Sharks to win.

Still, good win tonight. Its nice to know the Sharks can still look like a good hockey team on occasion.

by animadiversion on Dec 2, 2010 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

Well, when we're only 1 point from leapfrogging

from number 9 to number 3, I think it’s logical that we can start passing teams by playing games like this more often than not. As you said, they need to show us they can win without the motivation of a big game. Consistency is the name of the game.

by Chicago Shark on Dec 3, 2010 5:09 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, a game like this one creates mixed feelings. On one hand, it’s great to know that this Sharks team can be great when they show up and put in the effort and execute.

On the other hand, it’s incredibly frustrating to know that they haven’t done that more often this season. They certainly still are capable of being that team.

A four-pack of win!

Hopefully they can dial it up, as the next two teams will not be as…forgiving…when it comes to lapses in play.

I guess I’m not reading too much into this victory, as the Sens are not exactly at the top of the league. Let’s see two or three in a row, and I’ll breath.

Because it hearkens back to the ‘91 SJ draft rule that an ’expansion team is not allowed to draft 1st overall’ – which to this day pertains only to the Sharks (Falloon!!) – the rule was dismissed the following season when Ducks/Sens entered the League.

Basically the rule was created so the newbie Nor*Cal Sharks couldn’t take Lindros…blahblahblah. We get special treatment ;)

Well, good win tonight.

The Sharks beat a team they were supposed to beat (Ottawa is baaaaaad this year…maybe not Leafs or Oilers bad, but yeah). Which is a good step, since it happened on the road…but not one I’m going to start dancing and singing over (you just wait for that one…it’ll be quite a show). Nice of the boys to step up and win it for Heater (although Heater helped quite a bit towards that end as well). I said in the GDT that I wished the Sharks had grudges against every team we played, since they seem to be very good at getting up for games against teams FOR teammates…and not so good when they don’t have something else to play for other than 2 points.

Vlasic looked better tonight. I saw him both with Boyle and I think Braun tonight…and I think he plays much better when he can just focus on D and let his D partner focus on the puck movement. It’s why I’ve been advocating getting a puck mover for our blueline so much. I don’t think Braun, or Demers for that matter, are ready to be a top-4 puck mover full time yet…but I’m willing to be proved wrong. If they can, it will save us from having to go find one, which is always nice.

And, yeah, if Couture wasn’t in the top-3 of peoples’ Calder race lists, he better be now. And if he continues to get top-6 minutes (and I have no reason to believe he will not), then he could very well win the thing. Especially if his goal scoring pace keeps up (He’s on pace for, what, 35 goals and 52 points…and thats been with the team around him being bad. Imagine if they get good and back to a decent scoring pace). He should stay in the mix, anyways.

Anyways, the hunt for that elusive lost love that we call consistency will begin yet again. Montreal has been playing lights out this year…but that’s also in the Eastern Conference, so I’m not sure what to make of it. It will be a test, that’s for sure. Either way, good way to start off the roadtrip. This was the one game on this trip that I thought they could win, and they did. Now time to prove they can win others as well…

I think he plays much better when he can just focus on D and let his D partner focus on the puck movement.

Right now, that might be the case, but the best hockey of his young NHL career was with Rob Blake, who, while a future Hall of Famer, was not exactly a puck mover.

Vlasic, to me, is just a guy who needs confidence. When he has it, he makes reads better and just knows where to be. He’s got such a smooth stride and an unflappable demeanor when he’s comfortable. He has all the tools to be a puck mover. He doesn’t have to put up big points, just spring the offense.

The most positive thing I saw this game was that when the Sharks were in the offensive zone, the guys at the point were able to keep the play alive by retrieving cleared pucks and getting shots on net. This is particularly good since the book on beating the Sharks has appeared to be collapsing to the net. If you can count on the puck coming back from the point, that’s huge, as it gets all the defenders skating the wrong way and opens up patches of ice that are tailor made for our skill players.

I think the best part about tonight was the fact that Vlasic actually saw the most ice time, and was solid in it all. It gave us a chance to give Boyle a semi-rest as he still played 24+ minutes. But before a lengthy road trip any less pressure on Boyle is a good thing.

As for him playing with confidence, I couldn’t agree more. The times Vlasic has been horrible this season he has also looked tentative and scared of making a mistake. Maybe thats because he doesn’t trust his D partners, maybe thats because he was in some sort of funk. I’m not sure. But I am sure I want to see more of the Vlasic we saw tonight.

by animadiversion on Dec 2, 2010 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well, Blake was the one on that pairing that would pinch, and would be the main one to unleash the shot, and was the one with the offensive instincts. Vlasic didn’t have to worry about it as much. I think all defensemen need to have at least some skating ability and the ability to at least make a first pass out of the zone in order to be considered an asset to their team. I think Vlasic just works better under those conditions…at least thats what my eyes tell me (not always the best indicators).

Good point on the offensive zone pressure, though. It has seemed like quite a lot this year the D men are bailing really early and the Sharks have big issues keeping any sustained zone time because of it. Tonight they were much better about it, for sure.

I think maybe it’s a little bit of both viewpoints with Vlasic. He needs confidence, but he gets overwhelmed some when he feels he needs to do both parts of the game. So when he’s with a guy he feels he can rely on, like Boyle or Blake and apparently Braun (maybe it’s just the B’s?), he relaxes into the more singular role and doesn’t try and overdo things as much. He plays more simply and that leads to confidence as it goes well. Then he can do the things he isn’t as well know for, too.

Just a theory, I know. But I thought I’d throw it out there.

Too bad it seems like almost all the serious grudge matches involve the guys who have former teams in the Eastern Conference.

I actually enjoyed that the Sharks (even just one) became vilified tonight. It’s just nice to not be overlooked and even making The Network’s front page says a lot about the hype surrounding this game.

But man, the Sharks were buzzing tonight. Nichol was flying on that breakaway, and even Clowe looked quick out there at times.

As a side note: I was always under the impression that anything thrown onto the ice besides a hat would give the home team a two minute delay of game penalty. Not sure why this rule is no longer being upheld.

I was at the game, and they did warn fans after the third stoppage in play when things were being thrown onto the ice. I’m not sure when a penalty would have gotten called, but I believe it’s at the discretion of the refs.

I think the best thing some fans did last night was to hang Heatley action figures in urnials around the arena.

Oh well, now that’s done with it’s time to start worrying about my own damn team. Good luck the rest of the way Sharks.

My problem is it took them until the 3rd stoppage to warn them… That’s something they should have done after 1 stoppage. Hell, Crosby managed to get officials to warn a crowd when they were throwing hats for their own teams hattrick… which is completely legit.

I thought the first time it happened was fun, but then people started throwing water bottles, action figures, and some shmuck even went so far as to throw a FULL beer can (opened, but still) into the crowd of San Jose players at the end of the game. It was a little much.

What’s funny though, is that San Jose really is Ottawa-west. Great regular season success, but never able to get over that hump. I love Boyle, love Couture, even love the awkward Marleau… but I just can’t cheer for you guys anymore.

The irony of the jersey throw was the fans decided to do it after an icing. Instead of making the Sharks play a bit longer and maybe have a chance of scoring they gave them ample time to rest up. I’m pretty sure that’s why the Sharks were just pointing at whatever was thrown on the ice and not trying to get a penalty out of the deal.

We certainly have no reason to hate the Senators. Your fans aren’t usually obnoxious like say Montreal’s, your team doesn’t play dirty like Phili, you don’t have an over advertised face of the NHL like Pittsburgh or Washington. It’s hard for us to muster any sort of anger towards your team… plus you gifted us a 50 goal scorer for what many Sharks fans considered 2 bad contracts.

I can see why you guys hate Heater, but I’m with you, throwing a beer at a group of players that didn’t include Heatley was a pretty douche move. Heatley got to the locker room in haste, knowing what was about to be raining down.

So refreshing

It’s great to see the Sharks play such a complete game last night! I really had no complaints. I was getting frustrated with Marleau the past couple of games with his lack luster skating and passing and he couldn’t catch a pass to save his life. He looked rejuvenated (sp?) last night! I loved that T-Mac played with the rookie d-men a bit and placed then with vets. Braun is such a bright spot on the D pairings right now- I know it’s early but I think he has what it takes to stay. For the first time ALL season, I had nothing negative to say about Niemi. Looks like the goaltending coaches are doing well with him and that glove hand.

I was saying the game thing when all those jersey’s were flying in the 3rd period- I think what 10 of them flew and delayed the puck being dropped for a couple minutes? Should have been a two min penalty on the home team.

The Sens fans had me rolling on my couch laughing all game. I understand them feeling scorned but they were ridiculous. All I know is it fed this Sharks team to a complete WIN and a wonderful start to a road trip!

On to Montreal where they have ONE HOT goalie in Carey Price. GO SHARKS!

Great game, big problem?

I’ve been reading up on all the post game coverage this morning, and while most of it made me smile, about 10 minutes after reading it all I started to cringe a little bit. LeBrun mentioned in his follow up blog that Healtey had went to the board in the dressing room and put some “money up” for motivation. I love the fact that Heatley showed his teammates in a sort of silly and fun way that this game did mean something to him. Obviously the Sharks responded last night, and played light outs hockey for the most part. Let’s just say its not everyday that people are raving about Jumbo’s backchecking. It was a great game, just like the Chicago game the day before Thanksgiving. But this got me a little worried- do the Sharks only show up when there is something to prove? I’m glad we can get up for “big games”, but does that really mean we are not 100% there for other games? I know this is an issue that has been floated around before, but to really believe that pro athletes are not giving their best in every game scares me. Because if we are not doing that, and other teams are, we really have no chance of winning this thing. Of course, I am not saying anything new here and this really just falls back on the consistency issue- but I really hope consistency in effort is not something we have to be worried about. I know the Sharks fans here and everywhere have been putting in the effort selling out the Tank time and time again, coming to FTF to pour their heart out, buying the merchandise and following the players. Every game should be considered a big game for these guys, because this team is not going to be able to compete for a Stanley Cup every year. Let’s hope this road trip is the turning of the corner for this team and maybe Jumbo or Boyle or Heater stands up tomorrow and puts some money on the board and says “This game means just as much as the last, so let’s do this.”

by Ronnibily on Dec 3, 2010 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

I think you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who gives 100% every day on anything. Its just not possible, if you do that, you burn out, and you get jaded by the whole thing. Yes, I want more consistency out of them but if they slip once in a while, well thats fine. Its when the whole team slips and slips more often than not that bothers me. Its when the whole team at once decides its okay to slack off that gets to me and I think needs to be nipped in the butt.

by animadiversion on Dec 3, 2010 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

The money thing has been done by the Sharks for at least the last few seasons, if I recall correctly, whenever a teammate is playing against a former team. I think I remember Blake quipping that he seemed to be putting money on the board against every other team. I’m not sure I’d use that as a guideline as a “big game” or whatever. Just something fun the boys have been doing for a while now.

But the larger point is true…the team does seem to be getting up only for “big games that teammates have some pride on the line for” and not for others. And its sad. No, teams will never give 100% every game…but it would be nice to see at least 80% on the off nights…sometimes it seems like they’re giving 40%.

Ya, the money thing has been used before. I think the best story I have ever heard about using the money technique was last year’s Celtics. Doc Rivers put a wad of $100 he collected from the players in the ceiling panels in the visiting locker room at the Staples Center during the regular season. He said at the time that the Lakers would be in the Finals, and the only way to get it back was to make it to the Finals. They did- and the story is awesome.

Back to the Sharks- I think somewhere around 40-60% is what we see most nights. I can’t blame them too much for the Detroit game because I expected those players to be able to capitalize on our AHL defense.

I can’t complain about him putting money up as that’s a league tradition (Boyle talked with DP about doing it when Tampa Bay came to town at first, Scotty did it with the Preds, Goc and Erhoff did it to us, it’s likely Niemi did the same with the Hawks, etc.). It supposed to be a “I’ll put my money where my mouth is to prove those guys wrong about not needing me” kind of thing.

That’s not to say I disagree with anything else you said. We definitely need to find better motivations than just revenge and the spotlight. Because without those things, we’re struggling to beat teams we should be curb-stomping.

I was trying to imply that they too will cool off and stop getting really strong play out of everyone at once. Their goaltending and D is definitely not good enough to keep the Caps to only one goal consistently. they’re playing great right now, but theyll cool and theyll falter in the standings, that being said, were still only 3 points behind them with all the terrible play we’ve had out of the sharks.

Right now, I say thats a big if. If they decide to start playing again then theyll make it. If they continue to be asshats and not show up for the games that should be fairly easy then they arent making it.

Preaching to the choir, bud.

I am really looking forward to taking Ivan to the first home game of the playoffs if/when they do make it, though! (a little wager, as it is…and one I’d be happy to lose).

Niemi

Anyone know why Niemi got the nod at the last second last night? Really screwed my fantasy team and my sense of reality last night.

I'm guessing to just work him in a little more

It’s a long road trip so he will have to play again at some point.

by Morti on Dec 3, 2010 11:22 AM PST up reply actions

Probably to build up some confidence against a weaker team, and to give Niitty a bit of a break. And this road trip has lots of games in short amount of time and a back to back on it. We’ll need Niemi to be good to do alright on this series.

This

Not to bag on Ottawa too much, but, when you have a vulnerable opponent, it’s a good opportunity for your backup. I know Niemi isn’t a “backup” as he’s supposed to be our 1B, but, that’s all semantics. Last season, this is the sort of game we’d have been wanting Greiss to get in.

It wasn't a last minute change

From David Pollak:

****I know I initially reported that Antero Niittymaki, not Antti Niemi would be the starting goalie. Because of all the Heatley fuss at the morning skate, I abandoned my usual spot in the stands to gather with the media horde in the corridors outside the locker rooms. And that meant I didn’t see which netminder came off the ice first — the usual tell-tale sign.

But I got 15 seconds with Todd McLellan before he dealt with the more inflammatory subjects of the day, and he said it’d be Niitty in nets. I talked with him after the game and he said, no, there hadn’t been a change in plans — just a genuine misstatement on his part, that he meant to say Niemi and Niitty came out instead.

Thing is, having caught myself making similar misstatements when it comes to the two Finnish goalies whose names start with the same consonant and end with the same vowel-sound, I believe him when he said there was no intent to deceive.

I’m posting this here, because I’ve been on a link frenzy the last couple days and I feel the need to slow my roll on that…

DP’s latest WTC says that Demers could be good to go tomorrow morning (Whoo!), and that Coach says Niemi will go again (which is fine with me, since I’d like to see Nitty against Detroit).

I just talk a lot and somehow accidentally say things that sound smart. It’s all smoke and mirrors, I tell ya.

Not to mention Niemi played lights out yesterday! I do like the whole ride the hot hand if they’re both playing well, it really does force them both to be on their game and continue to try and improve. At the same time, I want one of them to seize it come playoffs :P

I’ll believe it when I see it, I guess. He looked like the hot hand against the Hawks, and we saw how that went against the Nucks. Though to be fair, he didn’t get a whole lot of help that game, either.

Yea, but I’m with you as well. I don’t think paying him solely because he played well the last game is enough, but the guy has shown marked improvements and we need to get nitty some rest during this series and I like you said, i want Maki against the wings, no two ways about that.

Always link WTC

The page hits are important to the bottom line and it ensures Pollack’s work is properly compensated. Also, citations and such.

Blah. Phone clicked through when I didn’t want it to.

Here’s the link. I sometimes forget that not everyone has it on an RSS feed.

Sharks played well.

Tonight the Sharks had a kind of fire to their play and it was very evident in Thornton’s play. Heatley was fining all the right places to be and Patty seemed to be playing like he always does.

I read in this thread stuff about the lack of Vlasic’s offensive production… Here are my two cents. I don’t mind that isn’t producing offensively but he better ensure that he is the most reliable defensive defensman we have.

Niemi, good game. Keep up the good work.

I think in the replay you can see a tag on at least one of those Dany Heatley shirts those fans threw on the ice. That means these guys were BUYING Heatley merchandise so they could throw it at the game! Also, referees turn a blind eye to octopi thrown on the ice at Red Wings games. I think they’re reluctant to call a penalty as long as it’s done during a stoppage of play when it’s not such a safety risk to the players.
