Jody Shelley Traded To New York Rangers For Sixth Round Pick
In a move before the NHL trade freeze that took place at noon today, the San Jose Sharks traded enforcer and fan favorite Jody Shelley to the New York Rangers.
The Sharks receive a sixth round draft pick in return, the same price they paid to acquire Shelley from the Columbus Blue Jackets in January of 2008. If New York re-signs him this offseason, San Jose would receive an upgrade to a fifth round selection in the 2011 draft.
"I am sad that he’s gone – great guy, great team player, and his blogs were hilarious and insightful," said Fear The Fin commenter mymclife of Fools and Sages. "He’ll get a warm welcome the next time he plays in San Jose, that’s for sure."
Notable off-ice accomplishments from Shelley include his blog on sjsharks.com, an interview with Drew Remenda about the role of an enforcer, a humorous commercial for SVSE, and a willingness to engage with fans at signings and after games.
We would also be remiss not to mention the work he did with the late Ryan Salmons, a Blue Jackets fan who succumbed to cancer on May 1st, 2009. Shelley was a professional athlete who committed his time to helping his community; in a day and age where the public is bombarded with stories of lavish lifestyles and immature behavior, it is refreshing to see a player who went the extra mile to acknowledge the common fan. He was, and still is, a class act.
Shelley also hosts the Jody Shelley Golf Fore Health in his hometown of Yarmouth every summer. The foundation raises money for medical equipment used in hospitals.
As for his on-ice contributions, Shelley served a role as an enforcer for a team that arguably did not require his services. The move adds to San Jose's draft coffers in the coming season, as well as opening a potential spot for one of the Worcester Sharks to make the jump up to the roster in preparation for the upcoming stretch run.
Whether that is Jamie McGinn, Frazer McLaren, or another forward remains to be seen.
I made the case last season that Shelley was an unnecessary addition to the on-ice performance for the San Jose Sharks, specifically in the playoffs where wasting a lineup spot for 3:30 of ice time doesn't make sense from an asset management standpoint. In addition, Frazer McLaren was seen as an upgrade compared to both Shelley and Staubitz, something that is now possible for San Jose management to pursue.
From an analytical standpoint, today was a success. The Sharks get a draft pick for a player they would likely not have re-signed, and the team is provided both a marginal amount of cap space as well as an opportunity for a player to make a greater impact during the playoffs. It is a good move.
Unfortunately, that comes with a price. The Sharks lose a class act within the organization, and a figure in the community that will be hard to replace.
Best of luck in New York, Mr. Shelley. Hopefully we'll see you again in early June.
Go Sharks.

The 6th round choice we got from the Rangers is actually for the 2011 draft, if I’m reading things correctly.

Dude, I was home all morning just in case. I leave, come back a few hours later and find out we’re down a Jody Shelley. WTF.

WTF!?
Just when Shelley let Douglas Murray babysit his kids… life is a bitch. For Murray.
I would trust my child to anyone on the team --- except ---- well ---- yea, probably everyone. Including Douglas Murray (laughs). - Jody Shelley

I don’t know how to feel.
I’m not quite sure if this is a bittersweet moment. I understand why we did it, but I’ll still miss Shelley.
Imagine he had gotten that goal last night when he hit the crossbar. How would we feel about this trade had he gotten the GWG against Detroit?
I’m the same way. I am a Jody Shelley fan for sure, but I think this will help the team.

Time for Stuabitz to put on the foil!
BTW I’d be a lot more comfortable about opening FTF on my work computer today if the entire background of the page wasn’t a KY Intense ad.

Nope
It’s been KY all day for me, no matter the refreshes or whatever else. I don’t particularly mind, but it is pretty noticeable (and, perhaps, a bit jarring due to the colour scheme)
omg
I was on my work computer, and i use the wide version of the site so i don’t see the ads really. I didn’t know the ads were even there. Long story short, i kept clicking the ads without realizing it (apparently i click the edges of webpages a lot without every knowing it, i dunno why either) and I kept getting that facebook popup of some KY ad.
So basically, i thought i got my work computer hacked with some crazy sex ads or some shit and I was kinda freaking out lol.
I do the same thing, clicking the sides of the page.
The ads always drive me batty.

Well I will miss his truculance, but just not enough consistent ice time and he also got called for far too many penalties (at least partly due to having the name SHELLEY on the back of his jersey). On the good hand though we got to see Colton Orr get KTFO by Shelley a couple games ago. Good luck going forward Jody!

Jody Shelley
He was really good at punchicizing peoples faces. He will be missed
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Shelley Gone
He has good character off the ice. He’ll be partially missed, and partially not (taking bad penalties). I hope DW has something outstanding up his sleeves.

Perhaps this was mentioned already
But in case not – Shelley’s dismantling of Colton Orr was his last fight as a San Jose Shark. Helluva way to say adios.

Great guy and will miss him.
If there is a silver lining for him, NYC is his favorite road city, so he will enjoy playing for the Rangers potentially.

A SUGGESTION FOR ALL
Please go to hockeyfights.com and check out some of Shelley’s pre-Sharks fights. I did it the other night for some odd reason. You’ll see why he’s the class of the NHL when it comes to enforcers. His better days were pre-Sharks as well as far as I could tell.

"You realize you have to bring something else, whether it’s saying something special in the room or doing something special on the ice," Shelley said. "Even if you’re not playing in a Game 7, you still can be a part of it by motivating somebody, or pushing somebody or criticizing somebody."
"We have a pool of players going forward that Jody Shelley has had an impact on and that will be felt for years," Wilson said.
I’m not sure we fully realize the influence Shelley was in the locker room. The Sharks may actually miss him much more than realized at present. I understand the move, but I still don’t like it. :(

Shelley feedback.
Good luck in NY and thank god we got rid of him…he was a waste of a line-up spot and with him on the ice, we didn’t have 4 lines that could score – a line of McGinn-Mitchell-McLaren can score for example…we’ll miss him a bit I guess but good to see us get a pick instead of just letting him walk. GO SHARKS!
Go Sharks!
The 4th line isn't always about scoring.
Truth be told we shouldn’t need a 4th line that can score if the first three lines do their jobs. The 4th line is for burning minutes so that the other lines can rest as well as bringing some energy to the game. Shelley was passable in this role – he’s not the best but his skill set had other advantages – beating on the other team tends to bring energy to a game. He’ll be missed from a fan point of view even if it was the best for the team.

I'm fine with the trade
Shelley was fun to watch when he dropped the gloves, but he wasn’t going to play in the post season, because he’s a liability on the ice. So they were semi-lucky to move him for a 5/6th rounder. As for the 4th line not needing to score, I remember last year, game 7 Pitt v. Detroit, Maxime Talbot (4th line) got 2 goals and the game winner.
