Five Sharks Reasons To Look Forward to the Olympics
Thank goodness the Olympic break is here and we can easily forget this completely gutless performance by the Sharks against the Sabers that finished an otherwise successful road trip. Moving on to more important, but still Sharks related things.
There are many reasons to be excited for the next couple of weeks of hockey as we tune in to various NBC channels to catch the latest Winter Olympic action. Besides the excitement of watching biathlonists doing extra laps because they missed the target (actually, one of my favorite winter Olympic sports) and never ending coverage about a guy who has the longest red hair of any Americans ever lived on this planet, we'll also tune in (1) because we want to support our national hockey teams, and (2) because Sharks players will be featured in a good majority of the games. In fact, for me the Olympics don't really start until men's ice hockey starts. Seriously - when was the last time you wanted to watch Germany play? Or when was the last time you cheered for Sweden? I never did, but this Olympic games are going to be all different because of that. Here are five Sharks reasons why you should watch the Olympic men's hockey tournament.
- Evgeni Nabokov Continuing to Play the Best Hockey of His Career. I agree with Drew Remenda who said on the broadcast last night that right now Nabokov is the best goalie in the NHL. His current saving percentage of .928 is the best in his NHL career by a long shot for a single season. On paper Team Russia has the weakest defense of the Big Four (Canada, USA, Sweden being others), just like the Sharks who arguably don't have the defense that Blackhawks, or the Devils or the Red Wings have for that matter. However, that may all be irrelevant if Nabokov continues to play how he's played this season. After all, he believes he can win the Olympics all by himself. Solid outing by Nabby in such a high pressure tournament will do wonders to his confidence during the-months-that-shall-not-be-named. Ro-si-ya! Ro-si-ya!
- Regular Play by Thomas Greiss. One thing we've learned this season is that Greiss is likely the future of the Sharks in goal due to his age and his potential. So far he's had a solid season for a backup. How will he fare when he has to face the best of what men's hockey has to offer? Playing behind Christian Ehrhoff and Dennis Seidenberg is not the same as playing behind Dany Boyle and Rob Blake, but I still think we'll be pleased with how he performs.
- Douglas Murray and Joe Pavelski Coming Out Party. Not that either of them are unknown in the hockey world, but regularly playing past 10:30pm on the East coast does not help those two get the media attention they deserve. How many people outside of San Jose noticed how Douglas Murray shut down Alex Ovechkin last December? When he shuts down Zach Parise and Phil Kessel in Vancouver, people will finally notice him, and they will also notice Pavs and his solid special teams play on both sides of the rink.
- The Damage the HTML Line Will Cause. It's one thing to watch Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Danny Heatley square off against the top defenses of the NHL and come out on top in most games. It will be quite another thing to watch how they fare against the likes of Norway and Switzerland, heck, even against such questionable defenses where Sergei Gonchar is their top man. For many of us here these games will mark the first time in our lives we'll have a hard time cheering against Canada, especially when our boys are on the ice, with Dany Boyle feeding them the puck from the back, even if he's paired up with our biggest enemy.
- Seeing All Sharks Compete Against Each Other. We knew it was coming when we heard that the NHL highest eight players will represent the Sharks at the Winter Olympics. We don't know how we'll feel seeing Douglas Murray run over Joe Pavelski, or Danny Heatley planting himself in front of Evgeni Nabokov, or Thomas Greiss stopping Patrick Marleau on a PK breakaway. But this is the kind of match ups I look forward to seeing.
Let the Games begin!

Great article.
I agree with you saying that the Winter Olympics dont start until men’s hockey start. Especially with these Olympic Games being in Vancouver, hockey is the main attraction. The other sports are interesting and all, but they just don’t have the same excitement and feel that hockey does. I do have one little problem with your article though. How could you diss the Flying Tomato? (or Animal, as he now wants to be called, which is a much more boring nickname in my opinion.)

I can appreciate his talent but what’s up with his hideous haircut that gets worse every time they show him on TV once a year? In my mind that’s worse than getting caught with a bong every few years.
Maybe if he had a better hair stylist or more muscle Animal would fit but Tomato indeed he is.

You’re crazy; White’s hair is sweet. It’s part of what defines him.

It's true...
The Flying Tomato without the hair would not be the Flying Tomato. He’d be just a great snowboarder. The hair is part of his character. Can’t hate on that!

I’m gonna have to agree with Ivano here. I was reading the ESPN magazine and his face was spread across two pages. When I flipped to that page it literally scared me.

I can tell you his hair is under more control than you might imagine. The Flying Tomato has fantastic hair. Don’t be hatin’.

Agreed
Great article. As much as I love our guys, no doubt I want nothing more than to see Pavelski shut down Heatley/Thornton/Marleau and lead the US to the GOOOOLD!!! For the next two weeks it will be………
FEAR THE 16!!
Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!
Can't agree more
The third one you listed is one of the main reasons why I can’t wait for men’s hockey to start, besides watching great hockey, that is. Few people really understand how important Joe Pavelski or Douglas Murray are to the team, and just how good they are. I’ve noticed that there is growing respect for Pavelski after he was named to the Olympic team, and Caps fans definitely respect Murray after he shut down Ovechkin, but they are still often overlooked by most of the NHL.
And while Wysh is usually a bit off the mark when talking about the Sharks, in his Olympic previews at Fourth Place Medal (Group A – Canada, Norway, Switzerland, USA; Group B – Czech Republic, Latvia, Russia, Slovakia; Group C – Belarus, Finland, Germany, Sweden), but he’s fairly complimentary of them in all of his previews. Mentions that HTML is the best line in hockey, Pavelski is a key depth player for the US, Nabokov has been absolutely dominant, Murray (and others) should help the Swedish blue line, and (most surprising) Greiss gives Germany a “shot to surprise,” as he has excelled when facing high shot counts (which Germany will likely give up).

Thanks for the links. Haven’t seen those yet.
As a Russian, my hope is that HTML line will fare as good against Russia as the Sharks fare against fast teams like the Hawks or Red Wings – not well. Sure, Canada will also have Crosby and Toews lines that do have plenty of speed, but if one factor goes against our Canadian Sharks, it’s their speed. They’re just too big and sometimes Thornton holds the puck too long waiting for a pretty pass opportunity. You won’t see that from Datsyuk or Malkin. I think this is also how Americans can beat the Canadians as well – that Kane line will be something to watch.
I’m surprised at the praise he is giving Greiss. Glad to see someone else outside of our fanbase recognizes the Meth Squirrel as a good goalie.

I cant wait until the men's hockey starts...
I’m just really really excited to see what happens. And while I’m pretty sure the US won’t end up playing for a medal, I’ll be cheering for them wholeheartedly nonetheless.
And, of course, if the US gets knocked out early, I’ll go ahead and cheer for Canada and our Sharks! It would be awesome to see Patrick Marleau getting the gold medal if I can’t see Joe Pavelski get one!

The best part of this is that somebody on the Sharks is almost guaranteed to come home with a gold.

There’s always room for Finland or the Czech Republic… But I can guarantee that at least one Shark will have an Olympic medal at the end of this. Unless somehow there are a whole bunch of upsets going on.

Do any players on the Sharks already have an Olympic medal?

I did some research just now and all I could find was that Blake won gold in 2002. He’s not going to the Olympics so all of the Sharks’ medal winners will be winning their first.

the translation wasn't the best
but it was unintentionally hilarious. Douglas Murray tackles like bulldozer. Damn straight he does!
