So...
can we count Olympic goals for the FtF Invitational Fantasy League. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
As much of a beatdown that game was, it was pretty fun to watch the NHL All-Stars play last night. Man, Canada is an awesome team. Scary awesome.
Nabby......
Close the 5 hole please, and represent the Sharks well…….

All in all, a great day for the Shark Olympians…… Here’s to Greis and Murray today!

In Nabby’s defense, it’s kind of hard to keep the focus when you’re up by 5 goals in the first half.
I thought the second goal he could have caught, but all in all, pretty good effort from him to keep Russia from allowing any stupid goals when they were starting to lose focus.
To be fair…at least what I saw last night, Latvia looked like a better team than Norway.
Nabby’s first goal (the 5-hole one) was super soft…but I thought the second one was just a wicked shot that the defense should have never let get off in the first place. Short side, top shelf, by his ear is a tough place to get your glove to. Just have to take your hat off to that one.

Yeah, I think it would definitely go Switzerland, Latvia, and Norway in terms of competition yesterday. Latvia definitely benefited from Russia’s defense though— they floated a lot at times and gave up some good opportunities that Nabby managed to stop.
It will be interesting to see if they try and tighten it up against the top teams like Canada/Sweden or just rely on Nabokov to make a ton of saves and try to win games 5-4.

I suggest you add a MURRAY SMASH (hits) column to the stats table.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Heh, I would if I could, but the IIHF doesn’t seem to track those stats. I considered just counting them myself, but that means I’d have to do it for all six skaters. Too much work for me honestly, and since NBC didn’t even manage to air the first period of Canada-Norway the stats would be tainted a bit.
Sort of unfair to Murray obviously— goal scoring is obviously not why he’s playing for his country.

Well you're in luck Plank
We live in California, and the USGS tracks all major earthquakes. Just check the richter scale during the Sweden games and you’ll know when Murray hits someone.

Puck Daddy’s 3 Stars Article gives Thornton a dishonorable mention because he only had 1 assist. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Just because he does not light it up on Norway does not mean he had a BAD game. I swear, if he does not get 4500 points in this tournament he is instantly a choker.

Yeah, I saw that. I actually posted in the comments section saying that just because he didn’t take a shot, his line was the only one that looked ready to play early in that game…and he still had an Assist…and his linemate scored twice. That’s not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. But Thornton has the label of “high pressure choker,” so unless he’s scoring 3-4 goals a game, he won’t be looked at as a success…

Eff Puck Daddy
That dude hates on the Sharks every chance he gets, and when they’re doing well he doesn’t say shit about them.
Wysh, for some reason, really likes Greiss. He keeps saying that because of Greiss, Germany has the potential to pull a few upsets. Every other Sharks he’s kind of apathetic to, yet Greiss is deemed awesome. Hmm.
That reminds me: I propose going to the PD live chat during the Germany-Sweden game and introduce the nickname “Meth Squirrel” to the world.

By “you guys” you mean the other Sharks players right? It’s not like we came up with it on the blog.

it’s not something to make a big deal out of … just a comment of mine saying I don’t promote the use of a nickname where drugs makes up that nickname … :)

It’s a technicality I know, but Crank is in the name Crankshaft, and Crank is a drug.
In any case, my point was that it’s just a name, and it’s not even endorsing the use of the drug, it’s purely used as a descriptor, unless we disagree that a person on meth is jittery and/or hyper?

Not an accurate comparison
A “crankshaft” is an actual thing. “Meth squirrel” implies nothing other than a squirrel on drugs. I’m not a fan of the name myself either, but, whatever, I’m a prude compared to most folks. I just silently judge you.

Since you asked … when I was about 9/10, my uncle (my fave at the time) took a walk. He was living with us at the time, never could get his act together. But was always alot of fun. He at some point, got high on something or another. Which explains now why he was the “fun uncle” huh? But anyways, he was high on something, went to a gas station, bought a gallon of gas in one of those portable carriers, went to the bathroom there, poured it over himself and lit himself on fire.
Bastard lived.
His condition now? He is in a hospital in Guatamala needing constant care. Had burns all over his body that left him unable to function. He had to eat thru a straw, after they cut open his mouth since it melted together. Burns all over his body.
Yeah. I don’t joke when it comes to saying I don’t like nicknames or any such crap regarding drugs. I saw the affects of it.

Drug stories.
Good friend of mine in high school decided he was particularly depressed one day, took some speed, led cops on a 3 hour police chase which ended directly outside my school. Pretended to pull a gun and was shot to death (14 pistol rounds, 2 shotgun blasts). Had to close the school the next day.
Yet another acquaintance in high school was particularly depressed, smoked way too much pot one night and shot himself in the head with a shotgun. If that wasn’t enough he also simultaneously hung himself to make sure.
During college I was walking 2 blocks away from a kid who had way too much of something, drive into 9 parked cars and hit 5 other kids, killing 4 of them. 5th one survived but had permanent injuries. The driver got out of his car, proceeded to shout he was the “Angel of Death” until cops arrived and subdued him. He got off on an insanity plea. Every now and then I get the shivers that had I walked a different way to DP it could have been me too.
I know the effects of drugs, still am able to find comedy in describing somebody as a meth squirrel.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
There’s also a thread over at HF Boards where this guy is complaining about how Thornton was invisible because he didn’t score goals/get more than one assist/his name wasn’t mentioned much by the PBP guy. It’s like, are you kidding me? He was the main reason for one of Canada’s goal, forechecked and backchecked, and played on the PK. Fine, he didn’t get more than one assist. Some other guys on the team didn’t even get a point, sure, but he sucks because he only got one point.
Oh, and he didn’t score a goal. Obviously he sucks, because he’s such a prolific goal scorer in the NHL. You know who else didn’t score a goal? Sidney Crosby. And hey, I didn’t notice them mentioning Boyle, but he played the most minutes out of everyone and ended up as a +4. Just because you’re not making these fancy plays doesn’t mean you aren’t being effective.
Plus, it’s one game. One. Just because he didn’t get five points in one game doesn’t mean that he won’t get five points in another.

What stuck out most to me.....
was his board work, but lets face it, Canada is expecting A TON from their top 2 Centermen, and if they dont come through in the eyes of the media, they are gonna feel the brunt of the venom. Its the burden of being the top faces on the Canadian team, and it goes with the territory.

Any argument based on what’s being said by NBC PBP guys is automatically disqualified in my book. They spent the entire time talking about how amazing Crosby was (even when he spent the entire first quarter crying to the officials about this and that), and never talked about anyone else, really. I mean, Heatley scored two goals, and barely got mentioned by the PBP guys. But its something we’ll have to put up with. Canada could win every game, with Thornton averaging over a point per game, but if he doesn’t lead the team in goals and assists, then he won’t be considered a success.
The Puck Daddy comments had people actually advocating making him the 13th forward in games that counted. Its times like these that I wonder if people actually watch hockey at all…

The NBC PBP guys are used calling all the Penguins games every Sunday since NBC only shows East coast teams, so I can understand their man-crush on Sid. No coincidence the NHL schedules Pens vs. Devils, Flyers, Rangers or Red Wings on Sundays starting in January. NBC blows…
Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!
Joe has a bit of a reputation to shake too
Rightly or wrongly, he was considered a non-factor in Torino. I doubt this is actually the rationale behind the PD dishonorable mention.
Heck, our own fanbase accuses Joe of invisibility at times. He could be pacing himself, who knows.
In comparison to Jarome Iginla’s night, Joe’s might seem tame.
Winning fixes everything. Just ask our own fans.

This reaked of a cheap shot at Joe, though. Canada won 8-0. Joe got on the scoresheet and his line played well. Reputation or not, the dishonorable mention was just a cheap shot to get some laughs and agreements in the comments section from the East Coast hockey fans.

How’s Greiss’s SV% still so high after that game where they scored like 5 goals in 17 shots. Thats like a 30 save percentage game lol =\
I have to say
Joe’s numbers do make him look invisible.
Do we have Face Off numbers for Joe, Patty and Pavs? It might make their stat lines look a little better.

It’s getting really hard to defend Jumbo. Mostly it is unbiased. But some not. One sog… Really? And a -1… That’s difficult to defend.

Meh.
He has been kept off the scoresheet, but still has been involved on most (all but 2) of HTML’s goals. If he is invisible, then so is a lot of the Canadian team. Crosby was a -3. BUT NO, he is so amazing that if he has a bad game and Canada does not play well, its HTML’s fault.

Just finished watching the game again.
The players that are truly invisible for Canada are Iginla, Getzlaf and Perry (well, Perry is noticeable, mostly for taking the penalty that got us to 4 and then being lazy on the empty netter). Joe looked like Joe to me. He won battles on the boards, made some crazy passes, tried to force a few things. That’s what Joe does. I don’t think he was coasting at all in that game.
Heater and Patty look great, the only guy I noticed more for the Canadians was Nash. That man is a monster. Crosby got the late goal, but that was more Nash than Crosby, Crosby’s best play was deflecting in Rafalski’s goal in the beginning.
Kieth and Doughty looked great on their back end as well. Boyle was okay. Weber, Pronger and Niedermeyer were not good at all.

I was surprised by how many people were talking about the USA-Canada game today. It was the talk of west Valley.

Nope.
And on the second part that’s what is great about the Olympics. It brings the country together (well sort of). Everyone today was talking about it. Awesome…

Plus he is such an integral part of Detroits defense, I don't think Detroit would even consider trading him.
It was more of a joke, because the likely hood of this happening is smaller than Patrick Marleau smiling unakwardly.

How is heatley only +1 when he has 5 points. I don’t remember the sharks being on the ice for very many goals scored against. I think I only remember one actually, and i thought i had been playin close attention to that. Everytime the other team scores i check to make sure the sharks weren’t on the ice so they don’t get blamed for something in the media.
I’ll update tomorrow for gold medal game.
