The Sharks Tour in Vancouver Continues
All in all, it turned out to be a pretty good start for all the Sharks currently playing in the Olympics and games #2 are are already starting today, featuring seven of the eight Sharks. Our players did what was expected of them in games #1, as everybody except Thomas Greiss end up winning their respective games, and four of of the six Sharks who are not in the goal recorded points. The Sharks goaltenders also represented their countries well. Nabokov allowed two goals on 20 shots, and should not be blamed for any of them. In fact, he was rock solid during the second period when Russia started to fall asleep, and pulled out a few of the pucks that appeared sure to go in. How many times have we seen this scenario this past season? Greiss was no slouch either, as he looked confident in the net, behind a questionable German defense and put up 23 saves against sloppy Sweden. For the detailed up-to-date stats, take a look at Plank's stats page.
The Olympic hockey tournament is starting to slowly pick up its pace. Here is what to look for in next games that are featuring our players.
United States - Norway, noon PT, ch. USA. Joe Pavelski will likely take the ice again on the same line next to Kessel and Malone, as Ron Wilson in a rather shocking move decided to keep the lines the same during the practice today. Maybe if he did it more often back in the day, he'd still be a Sharks coach. However, one of the bigger disappointments of the first game against Switzerland was the absence of his first line on the scoreboard. If things continue this way for a period of two, we'll see some of the old magic from Ron, and Pavs may find himself on the top line, next to Zach Parise and Patrick Kane.
Switzerland - Canada, 4.30pm PT, CNBC. A few of you already mentioned in the previous threads our general disappointment with the media digging Joe Thornton down for posting "only" one assist in the high scoring game against Norway. Wake up, people. It's just one game. ZeroIndulgence wisely pointed the following in the comments:
"Joe got on the scoresheet and his line played well. Reputation or not, the dishonorable mention was just a cheap shot to get some laughs and agreements in the comments section from the East Coast hockey fans."
And shouldn't this be a good time for Joe to return some of the old favors to his old Swiss buddy Jonas Hiller? We sure hope so.
Perhaps equally disturbing was almost a complete silence about the solid performance of Dany Heatley in that game, who scored two goals and once again showed how good he is on an international arena. Because Jarome Iginla scored three, and Sidney Crosby had four assists, they got all the praise in the media. Joe and Dany have a chance to bring all the attention back to them, and that alone is a good enough reason to tune in and catch the latest action.
Slovakia - Russia, 9pm PT, CNBC. Ilya Bryzgalov is in, Evgeni Nabokov is out, which means Nabby will likely start in the most important game of the round robin against the Czechs on Sunday. Slovakia will have something to prove in this game, after losing their first contest to the Czechs, but they get less then 24 hours to recover. On top of that, none of the Russians that played four years ago in Torino have forgotten that Slovakia beat Russia four years ago to start the tournament. Power play performance by Russia will be something to watch for in that game, as Russia went just 1-for-8 on their PP chances against lowly Latvia, forcing Bykov to make a decision that perhaps Russia should have special teams for PP and PK (something that is not frequently practiced in the KHL). Bryzgalov also made a series of negative comments to the Russian press earlier today. As this is his third Olympic games, he called the Vancouver games to be the worst in terms of organization, calling the games "a one big mess" and complaining about all the rules about what should appear on goalie masks, about the general lack of directions and guides in the Olympic village, and about how terrible the food is. Will that in any way affect his performance? And what happens when his comments leak into the Canadian press?
Belorus - Sweden, Friday, noon PT, MSNBC. Douglas Murray takes the ice again, as Sweden has another chance for payback for one of the biggest upsets in the Olympic history, when they lost to Belorussians 3-4 eight years ago in Salt Lake City, with game winning goal scored from the neutral zone. The Swedes looked sloppy against the Germans in their first game and they'll be looking to prove that they're still one of the favorites to win this tournament.
Finland - Germany, Friday, 9pm, MSNBC. If Greiss looked strong against the Swedes, why not continue his dominance and shock the aging Team Finland? Only time and Greiss will tell.

I seem to remember reading that Varlamov also had some complaints about the hospitality in Vancouver. I believe it was about the food.
Interesting to see what kind of traction this gets in the media, especially if Russia-Canada meet in the elimination rounds. Just another storyline, on a long list of storylines, for these two teams.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I can’t see this getting any traction until Canada and Russia meet in the elim rounds, and then it will be hung from the rafters, plastered across every newspaper, and on the bulletin board in the locker room…and the press will let the partisan Canadian crowd know to keep up the “hospitality.”
I don’t, however, suspect it will have any effect on what happens on the ice.

Yes, it’s clearly just a story. I don’t think it’ll affect what’s happening on the ice. But if you ask me, that’s not a very classy move by Bryzg. If we see Crosby complaining about any of conditions in Sochi, he’ll become Russian public enemy no. 1. He also said that the best conditions were in SLC, which Mitt Romney should be happy to hear.
When Malkin was told about Bryzgalov’s comments, and asked what he thought, he simply said he actually didn’t care because the conditions were the same for everybody. That’s a better response.
Friday will be the pivotal game for the German squad if they hope to make any noise in this tournament. If Greiss and the Germans can shut down Finland and steal a victory (they’ll obviously need to score…but maybe Sturm can sneak one or two in), it will set them up well going into the elim rounds.

Germany played pretty well, actually. Sweden was obviously the superior team, and Germany didn’t have enough skill to get more than single shot on any offensive drive. But they pressured the puck carriers, and were aggressive in their own zone in steering the shooters to the perimeter, and not giving much space for point shots. But the problem for Germany was really their offense. Goc is a fine player, and he’s to be commended for reestablishing his game this year, but he’s not good enough on offense.
After watching Norway, where that team was barely holding it together, you could see why the shots were fairly even between Sweden and Germany, and the Swedes weren’t able to really run away with it.

With all due respect, any self respecting goalie at the top of his game on the biggest stage in the world will admit that 5 hole goals are unacceptable. Now, I passed out prior to the Russia game the other night, and caught up the next morning by reading the thread. However, prior to the game, I wrote it was important for Nabby to close the 5 hole, predicting it could give him trouble in big situations, as it has in the past, and after the game I called him out in the following thread.
Maybe I was a little harsh, but the predictability of a Nabby 5 hole goal sucks, and does not bode well for the remainder of the games, or the playoffs later this year. I mean, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think its fair to call him out on this particular issue.
Is the Russian defense weak compared to previous games? Sure, and that will probably put Nabby in some tough spots throughout the games. However, that does not take away from the fact that he needs to shore up that 5 hole, even he would admit that, as would most self respecting goalies playing for a gold medal (and dare I say a Cup?)

I’ll disagree here.
First, you should watch the goal. It was from just a few yards out and came out of nowhere. Nabby didn’t have time to close the hole and the puck went it. Russia was already up 3-0 at this point so who cares? The second goal came when Russia was up 5-1 so it really didn’t matter especially once Ovechkin and friends scored two more goals in the next two minutes. The bullet over the shoulder was not stoppable by him or Roy or Tretiak. But Nabby was rocks solid in the 2nd period when Latvia played decent hockey and Russia was asleep.
Second, while it was a major problem for Nabby last year, he’s improved greatly in that area. I can’t think of more than just a couple of goals this year when Nabby had a bad 5-hole situation. Its no longer his weakness. Last year was new NHL gear and its no longer an issue.
Look no further than how Russia won at last world cups. Even if Nabby wasn’t having a great game, like in 08 final against Canada, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk picked up the slack, just like Ovy does in Washington day in and out. Ovechkin is a one-man machine. No other team has a player like this.

I’d still like to see him close the 5 hole on that first goal. It may have came from nowhere…but you have to be prepared in all situations. The second goal was just a brilliant shot.
Nabby may only need to be adequate in order to get the Russians the gold…but he’ll need to be far more than that if the Sharks are to win the cup. So against some of the better competition the Russians will face later in this tournament, it would be nice to see Nabby start stonewalling elite teams. It would bode well for all of us in the near future.

He will have to stonewall some elite teams if Russia is to advance. They were some terrible defensive plays against Latvia that will not be forgiven by players like Iginla, Heatley, Kane and Zetterberg.
In fact, I see Russia’s defense as almost the exact copy of Sharks defense. Think about the top d-men – Boyle = Gonchar, Blake = Markov, Murray = Volchenkov, Vlasic = Grebeshkov. Although the bottom pairs for Russia are better for Russia. Nikulin, for instance, could be a solid player in the NHL.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think its fair to call him out on this particular issue.
It hasn’t been an issue this year and it’s a little too soon to call him out especially after one goal.

I agree that it has yet to be a problem this season.....
however, it seems its only is a big problem in the biggest situations, like the playoffs, or the Olympics, so the fact that it has yet to be a problem this season makes sense……
Because he has been so good this year, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, and hope it doesn’t plague him going forward….
It just makes me worry about the upcoming playoffs……

A game against lowly Latvia when Russia is up 3-0 after the first 10 minutes is not what I would call the biggest situation in hockey.

Maybe its was more than jsut the big situations last year too......
but I guess I dont really remember those like I do the gimmys he let go 5 hole in the playoffs…..

It was a problem late last season and during the playoffs and during that time Nabby had an injured groin. I don’t recall him having 5 hole problems previously.
It hasn’t been a problem in the Olympics unless you consider just one goal a problem.

Honestly.....
for all our sakes, and my mental health, I hope your right, and that I’m being over anxious……
Then again, after the last half decade of playoff disasters, can you blame me?

Anyone actually watching Canada vs. Norway would have seen Joe make a beautiful cross-ice pass to Pronger for a shot that Heatley deflected for the second goal.
Igninla/Crosby had a good game, with a nice goal to start the scoring. But after the 3rd goal, that game was just a series of offensive drills in Norway’s zone.
It’s nice to see your team’s players put up points, but I don’t how important garbage time goals and assists are for this tournament. After the third goal, the rest of the game was garbage time.
