Need some help. Don't know jack about San Jose

So my husband and I finally have the chance to watch a game at HP Pavilion. We're going to the game against the Dallas Stars on March 25th. The one problem with all of this is we don't know jack about San Jose. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good place to eat that is cheap and has vegetarian options? Last time I went to a game (Avalanche game conference semifinals) I couldn't afford damn near anything at the tank, so this time I want to be prepared and actually eat more than just fries.

SJ Veggie.

There is a kick ass vegan cafe near the tank called Good Karma. About a 10 minute walk.

jatbar hasn’t done me wrong yet.

That’s the San Jose list. You’ll have to scroll through it for the vegetarian options, but they’re there. One of the reviewers is vegetarian.

Vegetarian House

is on Santa Clara St. (same as HP), but cross street is around 8th St. or so (not really walkable). Mostly Asian style fare, but the stuff here is good. The food is similar to how some Buddhist sects’ cuisines attempt to imitate meat, so I’m not sure if it’ll be up your alley, but as an omnivore, I thought it was pretty good. Full disclosure though, the place has some quasi-religious propaganda going on, but they only advertise, not proselytize. If you can ignore that, it’s good enough that I would even recommend it to non-vegetarians.

I’m not a vegetarian, and I LOVE the Vegetarian House. Always good, even if it can be a little salty (like most asian food can be).

And as far as the religious propaganda, I’ve been there about 10 times and haven’t noticed it. I bet I will now, though!

You never noticed the constant video from the “supreme master”? There is now a billboard on the 880 southbound, just north of 101 advertising this. If either of you think their food is good, you MUST go to Tofoo Com Chay at Santa Clara and 10th. It’s a tiny hole-in-the-wall with about 4 tables, but it’s soooo good. The people that work there are really nice and they have pho!

Since I work in DTSJ, I also am familiar with Tofu Com Chay, and I like that even better. Would rather go to DaLat for pho, but Com Chay aint bad.

OOPS

fail…good veggie Pho is in Mountain View “The Best Pho” or whatever off of El Camino and Showers? That’s real Vegetarian. You have to be very careful with ‘vegetarian’ pho..some Vietnamese people understand that as just veggies, noodles and broth that is made with beef stock so not quite vegetarian….DaLat is not vegetarian.

Sorry I got mixed up there’s another place called DiLac near Evergreen that’s a full Vegetarian house monk style. But yes lots of SJSU peeps rave about Tofoo Com Chay on 9th and Santa Clara best tasting ‘meat substitute’?

I like DiLac’s soups, but everything else is just okay. Apparently one of my students mother is a waitress there, but wouldn’t tell me which one (there are two, I guess).

DaLat is known for it’s Hu Tieu, a chicken-tofu soup with shrimp and a crab claw. People who know what’s up get it dry, noodles tossed in fish sauce, with the broth on the side.

It’s number 45 on the menu (see how many times I’ve been there?), or a number 46 if you want the DaLat Special (more fish and a spicier sauce).

Springrolls (fresh, not fried), are good as well.

All the Pho places that you’ve been to are really good. Do you like Paloma in the Vietnamese Mall? Good Mac & Beef, great seafood soup. More of a restaurant feel than the others.

I LOVE the Vietnamese Mall. Thai Lover (a janky foodcourt place in there) has easily, hands down, the best Pad Thai in San Jose. Bankok Spicy Noodle is awesome, as well.

BTW, no I am not Vietnamese… I’m Italian/Russian. If I want that food I usually make it myself, so when I go out I like to have stuff that I can’t make at home.

I know you’re not Vietnamese I’ve met you already hahaha! Are you freaking serious about the Vietnamese mall aka Grand Century?? Damn you are so much braver than I dude…I’ll never drive that part of town unless my parents are threatening a lashing….Paloma is good and yes you’re right its ‘fancier’ but if you wanna get down and dirty with authentic Vietnamese food you gotta eat at the stalls! Theres this one stall next to the dessert stall near the end…theres these like soft rice cakes in mini bowls with little shrimp sprinkles green onions a little chicharones (banh bo chen) you dip it in spicy fish sauce mmmm….yes. Its like the texture of raw oysters but A. you chew and B. no fish funk. YOu should be my parent’s kid…you’ll fit in just fine. :) They like you better than me already hahahha

Just for the sake of clarity

We’re not looking for hyper-veggie-options; the lovely ZombieSkittles is an ovo-lacto vegetarian, and I am not any sort of restricted at this time (though I’ve spent a few two- to three-year stints as a vegetarian as well).

Also, recommendations for Vietnamese and/or Thai will get you everywhere. There’s one good Thai place, and no good Vietnamese, that we’ve found up here — a damn good Indian restaurant, though, and some other local favorites (the Sierra Nevada taproom comes to mind).

I foresee that when this conversation is discovered by Skittles, I’ll be shortly thereafter agreeing to (at least) one of the Vietnamese restaurants named above. She’s rather a fan of most Asian cooking styles, and is, in fact, on her way back home at this very moment with Chinese take-out.

We’ll probably be in SJ for a few days (I have family in the area, so we’re making a weekend of it), so it’s entirely possible we’ll hit several of ‘em. I’m certainly not complaining … ;-)

I remember when I posted an audio file of me doing something that slightly resembles singing (don’t look for it), and people were like, “You’re a girl?!?!” Ahh, the consequences of having a gender-neutral username.

Yeah, my stats are just a result of obsessive Googling and a memory for strange and pointless facts. If you ran into me two years ago, I’d have trouble telling you who is on the Sharks roster, much less other players around the league. Summers with nothing to do makes it easier to really learn hockey.

And yes, Grey’s Anatomy is awesome. It has definitely gone through low points (see: the George/Izzie relationship), but it is definitely rebounding.

There are a lot of places here in Chico that are all about scrapbooking, but every time I go into one of those places I become overwhelmed by the colors and themes lol. I do most things digitally myself too. Me and my husband have been working on our own family website, but i’ve been missing the good old fashioned cut and paste paper artwork. Currently my problem with doing his baby book is the fact that i’ve stalled 2 years already, and I have no clue where to start. I have 3D pics of him from when he was in my stomach, and pictures galore, but I don’t have those “special” memories of when I was pregnant or the weekly update of when he was born…

don’t regret it because you didn’t have pictures of your burgeoning belly or ‘special’ moments start from the beginning. Very first page a huge picture of you and your hubby…then 3D pictures then newborn pictures and slowly move from there. Chronologically is best and so you’re less overwhelmed and if you decide to have number 2 :D you can remember to at least decorate your tummy once LOL! Pumpkin?

OMG

Decorating my tummy is an amazing idea!!! When i’m pregnant with my second i’m so doing it! Thank you so much for the pointers. I think I even have the perfect picture for the “me and hubby” part. I have a picture that was taken the very first day we started going out. Do you know an easy way to get hair in a scrapbook? The place sorta gave me all of his hair when he got cut, and that was during December, so there’s lots of it haha.

That’s one thing i don’t have a lot of. I don’t have belly shots. I think I have a shot of me at 5 months and then one of me at 8 months, and that’s it. Next time I’m going to do the month marking idea, because I would like to hold on to those memories _

haha yeah it’s pretty darn gorey, but the plot is amazing and the character development is impressive.
