All Eyes Are on Team Canada as Knock Out Stage Begins Today
What a week of an Olympic hockey that was. Was it really a week? So much has happened during that time - just ask any Canadian that went from a state of national pride to a state of national despair, as another collapse of epic proportions is looming over men's hockey team. A very similar state was felt by all the Russians after Slovaks beat Team Russian in shootout, but fortunately for their health, Malkin and friends put Russia back on track. Finally, USA is talking hockey once again after they upset Canada in what was one of the best hockey games we've ever seen. I was flying back to San Jose yesterday during USA-Canada game, and five random jerks on the plane told me that Americans won before I finally got to my DVR to watch the game - all unsolicited, I must add. That simply never happens in California.
Yet it's almost hard to believe - the best hockey is still ahead of us. Today marks the start of the knock out stage of the hockey tournament. Although all eyes will be on Canada as they are facing Germany, six other teams take the ice tomorrow during what is promising to be another great long day of hockey.
Belarus - Switzerland, 12pm PT, USA. If I was a American, this is the game I would tune in for, because this game previews Team USA's next opponent. This is one game that's somewhat hard to predict. Team Switzerland did not look bad in any of their games, losing with a respectable score 1-3 to the United States, then almost upseting Canada, and finally beating Norway. However, when you look at the stats, it is not a big surprise that these points came largely through the effort of Jonas Hiller. Sergei Kostitsyn of Montreal Canadanias is one of the few Belorussian names you'll recognize, and he leads Belarus with 5 points. Some distant memories from the past that I tried to erase indicate to me that Hiller has not said his last word in this tournament.
Germany - Canada, 4:30pm PT, CNBC. The big story of this game is that Roberto Luongo gets a call to be the Canadian Messaih, while he tries to solve the Canadian issues in goal, as he's starting in favor of Martin Broduer, who likely played his last Olympic game of his career against USA on Sunday. Bobby Lou will be playing in front of his home crowd, with Canada looking for redemption and hope as they try to earn a ticket to the dream game of the tournament versus Russia. The extra game is actually to Canada's advantage, as they get one more chance to gel together and sort out their issues. Something tells me this one is not going to be close, despite valiant efforts by our own Thomas Greiss. After all, Dany Heatley doesn't care who's in goal.
Latvia - Czech Republic, 7pm PT, CNBC. Latvia so far fielded the worst team of the tournament. They only scored four goals in three games, and allowed 19 (I actually had to pull a calculator for this number). Czechs on the other hand are looking to rebound from the loss to Russia on Sunday. As long as there is no Ovechkin Train heading towards Jagr crossing through the center ice, Prague will be a happy city to be in tonight.
Norway - Slovakia, 9pm PT, CNBC. Those of you who have not seen Slovakia play should tune in for this game. The Slovaks remind me of Dallas Stars from two years ago - very disciplined tight checking team with solid goaltending and a very fast counterattacking offense. In terms of team chemistry, from what I've seen so far, they stand right up there with USA and Finland. Marian Hossa leads Slovakia with 3 points and an impressive 17 shots (2 more than Ovechkin, for comparison). As for Norway - this games marks the last time we get to hear the name Tore Vikingstad called on the air.
This post is your game thread for the first two games. We'll open another thread for the other two.

Good preview Ivano, sorry it had to be bumped down to second on the front page for the Jamie McGinn interview.
I’m thinking we use this as an open thread for the first two games, and then open up a Fanpost for the remaining two. Thoughts?

I have yet to have a discussion with him on what he wants to do, and what we would want him to do, after the Olympics have concluded.

Looks like the Sharks will take the blame
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Of course. That was the easiest prediction to make. If Canada is out, it’s always Joe Thornton’s fault.
Who cares that his linemates are producing better than anyone. Who cares that Joe’s line is the only one that looked dangerous in every game. Who cares that Getzlaf, Nash, Staal, Iginla and hell – just about all of them not named Heatley or Crosby – are no shows as well?
Oh, and where are the articles No Show Marty?
I think Crosby has been pretty invisible too. Aside from a shootout goal (on the second fucking attempt) and being in the right place for Nash to shoot a puck off his stick.
Nash actually has looked like he’s trying. I think he’s probably trying to throw too many hits and getting out of position, but I notice when he’s on the ice. The Sharks line is always good every time it’s on the ice. I have to be reminded that Iginla is even playing. Getz and Perry are visible in that they make bonehead play after bonehead play.
The forwards I think that are playing well for Canada are Staal, Toews, Heatley and Marleau. On defense I always notice Doughty and Kieth… the rest, not so much.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Can’t remember where I read it last night, but apparently we’ll likely see a big decrease in veretan’s time (Pronger, Boyle, Scott N.) to give more time to Doughty, Keith and Seabrook. It may be a good idea, or not.
What do you think will happen?
Seabrook hasn’t really impressed me any, but Kiether and Doughty are really freaking good. Boyle hasn’t been his usual self.
I think their game will be more dynamic if they do this, but it’s going to lead to some odd man breaks.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Boyle really shouldn’t be getting too much time out there, I think. Not if you’re basing ice time off the last two games.
Then again, same goes for Pronger. That pairing has been Canada’s worst I think. Hopefully he can pick it up.

Boyle was Canada’s far and away best defenseman against Norway, though, which makes this drop-off a little strange. I’m partially chocking it up to Pronger being horrible, but I’m not really sure why Boyle hasn’t been playing as well.

Pronger and Nieds need to sit more anyway… I don’t think Boyle has been bad really, but I suppose he should be in that category as well since he’s usually on the ice with Pronger.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Pronger is just slow and old. Maybe he’ll kick it up a notch in knock out round games, like he always does in NHL playoffs, but maybe his age is starting to show, just like with Rob Blake. I sure hope so.
Daughty and Keith are faster and can probably keep up with the Russians better.
But first comes this monster.

Yeah, I’m pretty much over it at this point. We all knew that if Canada stumbled at all, Sharks players would get the blame…and specifically Joe. It’s easy, and sports writers are lazy. I’ve decided to block that bs out and concentrate on US domination!

Also notice a pretty much complete absence of any good articles about Heatley.
Seriously, what does he have to do before Canada embraces him again? Score the rest of their goals, averaging a hat trick in every game?
No, it’s Crosby’s team because he’s a hero for scoring that shoot out goal against the Swiss.
The shootout goal against the Swiss after failing the first time he was given a shot…and not scoring at all in regulation. Those parts are conveniently left out. Nothing can taint the image of the SAVIOR OF CANADA!

I still feel bitter Bykov felt the same way about Ovechkin and kept putting him in on SO against the Slovaks.. Three damn times.
Let’s hope the Russians don’t need a shootout the rest of the way, then. And if they do, then Datsyuk gets his due…

Ah yes. Sportswriters will always grab the low hanging fruit and [some joke about how Thornton’s balls hang low].
In all seriousness though, I don’t think Thornton has had a great tournament. Doesn’t mean he is the one to blame for the loss to the United States. Far from it. No matter what happens until the San Jose Sharks win the Stanley Cup, it is a story that is going to be written.
Search the deepest recesses of your soul— do you really even get mad about articles like this anymore? I sure as hell don’t. There’s no need.

I’ve seen so many people and articles just ripping on the Sharks line in general. Which is ridiculous since, not counting the blowout game against Norway, the Sharks line has accounted for 60% of the goals Team Canada has scored.
I think Joes played fine, especially in comparison to the rest of the players on Team Canada. I think because you can’t say anything bad about how Healtey and Marleau have played (although people still are…), people are instead hating on Joe in an effort to hate on the Sharks in some way shape or form.

I haven’t heard a lot of talk about how the next two games will be played against Sharks goalies. That should be pretty interesting to see how HTML fares against their own goalies. Will they score tons of points because they have the advantage of knowing the goalie and what he likes to do, or will they get shut down because the goalies know them and what they like to do?
As many games as Nabby plays, I don’t think it’s a secret to anyone following hockey as for what Nabby’s weaknesses are. If anything, I think Nabby has the advantage because he knows what Marleay or Thornton are going to do on a breakaway and I bet he can read the Canadian PP better than anyone else.
Go Canada Go!
I’ll be in class for most of the games tonight but will be cheering in my heart!

I still can’t decide who I’d rather the US plays tomorrow. Part of me is comfortable knowing we’ve already beat the Swiss, therefore I know we can beat them again. But Hiller is still Hiller, and he’s a gamechanger. But Belarus hasn’t been a slouch this tournament either. I guess it doesn’t really matter, as the US should beat either team.

If its tied at the end of 3, I believe this round has a 10 minute OT period before a potential shootout. I wish the NHL would go to a 10 minute OT in the regular season. I think more games would be decided in OT rather than a skills contest that way.

Well, I think SO is still not a good way to decide a game like this. One thing NHL has right – the game is played till someone scores.
I’d agree in medal games. But the Olympics have one ice rink, and a whole schedule of games to get through. They need winners to be decided in a somewhat timely manner…

I havent been paying very close attention to this game but it seems to be a fairly equal contest. I cant really decide who I want the US to face tommorow, though.
On an unrelated note, the commentary team was talking about how European goalies stay deep in their net because of the wider European ice, and then Pierre Mcguire said that Nabokov is the most impressive European goalie he has seen. He was going to elaborate, but then Mike Emrick cut him off because there was a rush.
A Canadian homer actually showing some love for a European, West Coast goalie. Amazing.

I have to say, as far as the US is concerned, a nice, long OT period is pretty ok with me! Having to play back to back after going to OT just to get there should tire them out pretty good. The well rested US team should use this to their advantage…

I’ve been impressed with Belarus. And except for the Canada game, Hiller has looked rather ordinary. It’s a worse draw, to be sure. It’s also the draw we expected. And the US beat Hiller once already. I’m only mildly concerned about the Swiss. I’ll lose it if they pull the upset, though.
I think we’re all just a little fragile after what Hiller did to us last spring. He’s no Lundqvist, Miller, or Vokoun…

Unfortunately yes. A ten minute overtime period will be allotted for elimination games, but the medal games (gold & bronze) will have a 20 minute overtime before going to the shootout.
It’s a step up from the five minutes in group play at least.

That’s at least a little bit better but it’s going to be so sad to see someone win the gold on a shootout (if it comes to it). Sure it’ll be intense and everyone will LOVE to see skills win but come one…they can’t get enough revenue from endless OT to have a TRUE winner? Gahhh…

Why would you want Canada to lose? Those are our boys out there! I’d rather them do really well in this tournament… come back with confidence… and kick the crap out of the remaining teams this season!
I dont want Canada to lose. Im just sarcastically cheering for Germany cause they have no chance in this game.

Because Canada feels entitled to win the Gold medal…and seeing them cry would be worth it. Also, in my case, I"m part German, so that would be cool. And I just think it would be hilareous if Germany won.

I’m rooting for the USA. And then, my heritage from back in the day dictates I need to cheer for Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Only one of those have a hockey team.
Until March, there are no Sharks. I’m all caught up in nationalistic pride!
Ultimately I wanted Germany to win like 3-2, with both Canada goals scored by Sharks…but Canada losing would be epic.

As such, Crosby has gotten the attention because of who he already is. The only other player with comparable scoring numbers is Heatley, and we all know what kind of a story that’d be in Canada.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Heatley has stood out, without mention. No one else really has, other than by how bad they’ve been (Brodeur, Getz and Perry, Thornton). Maybe I just don’t see it, but Cindy isn’t outstanding. He’s not in the same league as OV, he cannot carry a team on his own…and the way he’s constantly talked up…from the very beginning…I will never, ever be a fan of his.

They are two completely different players. I think you may be letting the media’s portrayal of him cloud your judgement. He is outstanding and (depending on who you prefer), at least the second best forward in the world.

It’s true, they’re very different players. And I definately prefer OV’s style of play and his carefree attitude much better. And it irritates me that he wasn’t, at least for a few years, getting the same amount of love. Impressions are formed early, and my first impression of Cindy was that of an overrated crybaby who didn’t deserve the media hype. It’s hard to change those opinions…especially when I don’t see anything to change it (except he’s backed off a bit with the crying…he’s starting to man up).

Ovechkin won the Calder
I think he got plenty of love. He’s just a Russian playing in a North American league. You could say the same thing of Malkin.
I do understand the media saturation. There are days I’m sick and tired of both of them, but there’s no way you can deny that they are not entertaining to watch.
Ovechkin gets love from his fans because he brings everything every shift every game. The same can be said of Crosby. Win or lose, that guy is out there fighting for ice and the puck every chance he gets.

SWITZERLAND beat Belarus in the shootout.
Greiss has looked really good. Single handedly kept them in the game in the first with some spectacular saves, only giving up one to Thornton. But Germany’s lack of defense has been brutal on Greiss in the 2nd and 3rd. No one is clearing out the front, blocking passes, clearing the puck after 3 saves.
Oh, and Shea Weber had a goal on a slapshot from the point that literally went through the net without breaking the net. We’re all in awe.

Gotta ask the question— why all the Crosby hate? He is an amazing player.
If we are going to blame the media for unfairly crucifying Joe, then why wouldn’t we do the same when they anoint Sidney? Both can’t control what others write about them.

I actually respect Crosby
For staying mostly level headed in the face of unrelenting media-latio.
He’s exciting to watch, not in the same way as Ovechkin, but certainly in his own way. They are great foils for each other.
He may be a whiner, but if he is, Ovechkin is a headhunter.

I don’t see it. I think he’s good. But I wouldn’t put him in the top 5 players in the league in terms of pure talent and game changing ability. On a good team, he gets great numbers. On a crappier team, I just do not believe (and there’s really no way to test this yet, so its all IMO) that he can put up similar numbers. He cannot carry a team or bring them back from the brink.
It’s not his fault he cannot do these things, it’s the relentless, obsessive media love he gets. But because he’s been shoved down my throat since he was drafted, and I don’t see him as living up to said hype, I can’t help but find some joy in the pedistal the media’s put him on getting knocked around a bit.

Fair enough. His career stats speak for themself in my opinion. Rookie year, 102 points on a non-playoff team. Next closest player was Gonchar who had something 59.
A Stanley Cup to his name, excellent playoff numbers. Great vision, great control on the boards, great goal scoring ability. Look what he did to Bill Guerin’s career last year during the playoffs.
I understand the media argument, and I agree— they felate him. Other than that though, I don’t understand the Crosby hate. And I don’t think I ever will.

Him and Ovechkin are the two most valuable players in the league. Iginla, Malkin, Datsyuk and Thornton used to be in the discussion, Doughty and maybe Kane might be in the discussion very soon, but right now I don’t think you would find any GM in the league that would trade Sidney for any other player straight up except Ovechkin.
A little late
I respect the hell out of Crosby. Hell, I like him more than Ovechkin, since any mention of Crosby has to include Ovechkin somehow. He’s fun to watch.
And the only reason I was annoyed with Crosby is because of the media – for every thing a Shark does right, the media has to jump onto Crosby and point out every little thing he does, even if he didn’t do a damn thing. Take one of Iginla’s goals for example – the play is set up by Boyle and executed with a great shot by Iginla, but for some reason Edzo decides to say that it’s completely because Crosby drove to the net. It’s not, actually. That had nothing to do with the goal. Iginla’s shot was perfectly placed so that Greiss couldn’t get it. That’s it.
It’s fine and dandy if they credit Crosby with a great passing play, because he deserves credit then. But when he doesn’t deserve credit? Shut up about him and talk about the players that made it happen.
Opposite goes for Thornton. He’s a good player. Don’t make him out to be the John Shuster of hockey, because he’s not. Acknowledge that yes, he can do something good, yes, he can set up and score goals, and yes, during a high-pressure situation.

This isn’t good: NBC to tape delay the gold medal game on the West Coast.

Dear NBC,
I understand that the Miracle on Ice was tape-delayed. But I also understand that back then, they thought plaid bell-bottoms were awesome. Times change. You, apparently, haven’t. Shit like this is why you’re last among network television.
Regards.

This game is not going the way I wanted it to.
If Greiss was going to be lit up, I wanted only Sharks to score.
Now, it looks like his % will take a beating, and the Sharks have been kept off the scoreboard sans a few points early on.
Good to see Luuu surrender two.

Greiss kept them in the game in the first. I was encouraged by what I saw. Can’t really count the last 4 goals by canada…germany had long since given up by then.
