Canada v. Slovakia: Can you stop the Unstoppable?

Photo

I'm stuck in a hotel room in Northern Washington with little to no internet. I'm confused, tired, and a bit disoriented.

The one thing I do know, though, is that I'm not betting against Canada for the remainder of this tournament.

I was working Wednesday when the game was going on. Someone walked by, and commented to me that the score was 3-1 in the first period. Unaware of who was in the lead, I thought Russia was running away with it. Little did I know that Canada's defense would decide to show up not only defensively, but offensively as well. Getting seven points out of your backend is ridiculous, but when you're weakest (ha!) blueliner is Drew Doughty, you know you have a solid team.

Hey, I know it's the Olympics. All the teams are stacked. But now that Canada's blueline had gelled to the tune of an absolute walloping of Russia, I don't know if they can be stopped.

Not only were Dan Boyle and the rest of the defenseman solid in all zones, but the offense came through on the promises implied when the team was constructed. Joe Thornton didn't have the point production I predicted, but he was a few Marleau tap-ins from a multi-assist night. The half board set up, as Plank mentioned yesterday, is annoying as hell, but some of the passes he made sent tingles to areas I'd rather not talk about in a public forum. Heatley was a non-factor, but he gets a pass because he's been clutch all tournament. What's most impressive is the continued strong play of Toews, and the recent emergence of Rick Nash, Ryan Getzlaf, Jarome Iginla and Corey Perry

Although I hate Gezlaf, it's hard to deny his skill, especially displayed in the last game. I'm not going to anoint him to the level that Plank has of late, but he's definitely one of the top five centers in the league. You can figure out the other four.

As I talk and talk about Canada, I feel as if I should at least mention Slovakia. They have been my favorite team in the tournament (besides the US), and the upset of Sweden can't be overlooked. However, unless Jaroslav Halak (swoon) plays out of his skull and the offense scores at least six, this game won't even be close. Marian Gaborik and Co. are definitely capable of putting up points, but I don't think Canada is going to let it get there. Even if Canada's offense is matched by Slovakia, the ability of the defense to chip in offensively will make this game a mismatch in every sense of the word. The home ice advantage doesn't hurt, either.

I doubt Canada will lose another game. I of course will not be pulling for them if they face off again against USA, but until then, I wouldn't bet against them.

Slovakia Can win this game

Does Halak need to be stellar, yes. But the Slovaks will take a different approach than the Russians did, most of the Slovak players will have one objective, stop canada from scoring. Not thinking about counter-attacking should help them lower the quality of chances (not to mention 30 minutes of Chara) . Slovak powerplay has been deadly so eventually Canada will take penalties, and when they do the Slovak PP can make them pay. Any team that can beat Sweeden can beat Canada. However I wouldn’t bet against Canada either.

by Jpynn on Feb 26, 2010 8:50 AM PST reply actions

I’m not betting against them, but it would please me a bit if Slovakia won tonight against Canada.

Again love our guys, but I think USA’s chances of Gold increase with Canada not playing against us.

I agree. Canada can see gold in their sights, they can smell it, the country is back on the bandwagon after Canadian tsunami hit Russia, and the only time this game will be close will be at the opening faceoff.

Slovakia’s still my choice to win bronze, however, even though I hate all their NHL players.

by Ivano M on Feb 26, 2010 10:01 AM PST reply actions

Sigh, I’m really tired of all the Canada-love* in the media. Even the US media has gotten on their knees to service the Canadian team. I mean, its fine, I’d rather the US continue to fly under the radar despite being the only undefeated team left/ Whatever. But Canada in the Gold Medal game will just be intolerable.

*Note by Canada-love, I mean everyone on Canada except Sharks players.

Although, an epic rematch between the US and Canada (if the US finds some way to win…I’m really nervous about this game), would be pretty awesome. US National Teams have a pretty awesome track record this season in Championship games on Canadian soil.

I don’t think Slovakia has a shot in hell to beat Canada. This game will be over by the end of the first. I think I’ll still cheer for Slovakia, though.

Canada needs to WIN GOLD

The Shark 4some will understand how much it takes to be a champion. This will benefit the Sharks when playoffs come around.

by ChangoT on Feb 26, 2010 10:28 AM PST reply actions

The Stanley Cup playoffs are such a different beast, I don’t know if Thornton et al winning gold will directly translate. These one-and-out games, vs. a 7 game series, are tough to predict. Just ask Russia (or Sweden, for that matter) if they would want another couple games against the teams that eliminated them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the Sharks get some swagger for the remainder of the season, starting with their Olympians.

by ievans on Feb 26, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

On top of that, Thornton is not even close to being the best player on Team Canada, and is not expected to carry the team. Hell, even Crosby is not expected to carry them – he had zero points against Russia, and that didn’t matter too much.

First like is going to be important, but we won’t go very far without Pavelski’s line and contributions from Mitchell, Nichol etc.

by Ivano M on Feb 26, 2010 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Fair points all around BUT...

In a one game tournament, you have to learn how to play desperate.

In all the time Joe Thornton has been with the team, I can’t say the team has ever truly consistently figured out how to play desperate. They seem to be able to do it for maybe a game, or usually, more like a period at a time.

A few notable exceptions:

1. The first season he was here, he arrived on a 12th place team. The run they went on in March was pretty incredible and the team kept it up all the way through the first half of Game 2 against Edmonton. After the Torres hit on Michalek, and the goal scored immediately following the 5-3 PK, the team seemed to lose steam. They were never the same again.

2. Games 4 and 5 against Dallas, I think the team dug pretty deep. And it got them close, very close. Game 6 was, for the most part, a pretty desperate effort. It wasn’t enough because of the hole they dug themselves.

The pressure of a single elimination tournament will be beneficial because it serves as a reminder that the regular season mindset does you no good in the spring. You can’t afford to have off games like Russia did, because you don’t always get a next game. And you can’t play too many bad games in a row (see Anaheim last year).

There really is no substitute for these high pressure situations. And, all east coast bias aside, Joe has been, by his very high standards, pretty invisible. The book on the Sharks in the post season is that they don’t score very much. If you have one of the most prolific assist men on your team and he’s NOT setting up goals, and you have $6M+/yr invested in him, that’s just not good enough.

Most of the criticism Joe gets is unfair, but for a player of his stature to have numbers as average as he does in these big games is still not the greatest thing in the world. Joe and his line LOOKING dangerous are not the same thing as actually BEING dangerous.

We need dangerous Joe, not dangerous looking Joe.

That’s a good point. If the Sharks Olympians learn how to play every game like an elimination game, and carry it over into the playoffs and play every game within each series like an elimination game, that would be beneficial…

by ZeroIndulgence on Feb 26, 2010 12:48 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, winning gold with a team of superstars around you that would cost like 100 million in Cap space isn’t exactly going to teach Thornton, et. al. “how to be champions.” It’s like, hey, if the Sharks signed every good player, we could win! And, as ievans said, one and done tournaments are pretty wonky.

How the Sharks players do in the Olympics should have no bearing on how they’ll peform in the playoffs (unless Nabby is really rattled by the Canada game, which I really hope he isn’t).

I'd really prefer it

If the team rallied around him because of it.

Your goaltender got beat badly and is being made a pariah by the media? Lay it all out on the line for him. Back check, block shots, get dirty in the corner, hit people and score more goals. Keep his crease clear and let him do his thing. He’s carried them enough.

That’s the attitude the TEAM needs going forward, me thinks.

Good points

And actually, if the Sharks want to learn anything from Team Canada, it’s that everyone contributes. Everyone.

If your top line is being keyed in on, elevate your game and take advantage of the other team’s focus on only one line (Max Talbot, anyone?).

The Red Wings are really good at this. Their best players are usually their best players in the playoffs, but everyone else steps up, too. So even if Datsyuk and Zetterberg are being contained, they’re still in the game because Draper or (shudder) Maltby chips in.

hockey fairy tale

common guys, would you not hope for slovakia?
for me slovakia represents pure hockey romance. Players who had grown up in such a poor country, learning to play the game on open air rings, with an equipment used in canada probably in the 60tees, drilled and also inspired by coaches, that predicted the nicest eastern european hockey philosophy that it is a beautiful game, that it is not a game against your oponent, but a game with the puck. a golden generation, friends, facing the last chance to get a medal maybe the golden…
on the other hand a canadian machine. every detail of the compaign is planed, silver would mean a big loss, players like crosby who a hyped to super humans, since they are teenagers.
ok, that view is a little bit pathetic, theatralic, maybe not objektive, but my heart beats for slovakia tonight.
what do you think?
my heart beats for slovakia.

I got no issues with Slovakia

They would be a worthy opponent. While it might not have the romance of USA/Canada, Slovakia would be a great story. From the limitation on inclusion of Slovaks on the Czechoslovakian national team, to the fighting for respect and medal standing since independence, there’s plenty of great stories.

But given that there are no Sharks playing for Slovakia, I have to root for Canada.

Actually, the Sharks have had the first or second goal for Canada in every Canadian game.

~Getzlaf had the first goal against Russia, followed by Boyle.
~Thornton opened up the scoring against Germany.
~Heatley got Canada’s first goal against the US (after the US scored first)
~Heatley also got the first goal against the Swiss (and Marleau got the second)
~Iginla had the first goal against Norge, followed by Heatley.

The Sharks definately seem to be the engine that drives the Canadian bus, despite what you read.

You think they can play better than they did against Germany or Russia? I think they peaked with that Russia win. Canada built their team and geared themselves towards beating Russia. While the US has built their team and has focused on beating Canada. I think we’ve seen the best of what Canada has to offer.

Not saying that won’t be enough…but they shouldn’t blow the US out. If they win, it’ll still be a close, tight game.
