St. Louis Game Time

The San Jose Sharks head into St. Louis to face the Blues tonight, kicking off a six game road trip that will round out their pre-Olympic schedule.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic did not make the trip according to David Pollak of Working The Corners. Dan Boyle, who has missed the last five games for the Sharks with an upper-body injury, traveled with the team to St. Louis and will continue to attend practice as he has done for the last week. Whether or not he will play is dependent on a game time decision from head coach Todd McLellan.

Fear The Fin previously reported a possible left knee injury to Marc-Edouard Vlasic, allegedly sustained at the end of the first period against the Chicago Blackhawks on January 29th. With trade rumors involving Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Niclas Wallin heating up, more questions will be asked concerning the severity of Vlasic's injury in the coming days. Possibilities run the gamut from a continuation of the effective injury management strategy McLellan has employed this season, to a situation where Doug Wilson is not releasing any information in order to maintain a position of power at the bargaining table with opposing general managers. That bargaining power will prove to be essential if Wilson plans on upgrading the Sharks blueline before March 3rd, an area of the team that has received it's fair share of concern since the beginning of the year.

Star-divide

Other concerns within the community also bubbled to the surface following a disappointing 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night, with the significance of the defeat being debated as the clock began to wind down.

"We as fans should reasonably expect improvement," Denver Diaspora said. "Not to the point of not enjoying the sport or the team, but when someone points out the similar patterns from previous years, it is ridiculous to make them feel like idiots for doing so."

These patterns, of course, are the ones that have haunted the Sharks for the past four postseasons-- an inability to make a deep playoff run when the level of competition significantly increases. San Jose has not fared well against the current two through nine seeds in the Western Conference this season. The team's record stands at 8-9-3 in regulation and overtime against these opponents, with five games that went to shootout being excluded due to the lack of being able to extrapolate anything useful from the outcome of a skills competition.

This blog has made the case that the post-Olympic stretch is when a hard look at the Sharks performance against playoff teams will be the most beneficial; by mid-April, an improvement in this category would likely quell the concerns that have already begun to grow.

And yet the Sharks find themselves at the top of the Conference for the second straight season, with 81 points in hand and a playoff spot all but guaranteed. They will send eight players to the Olympics later this month, left winger Patrick Marleau has flirted with the Rocket Richard lead all season long, and a revamped bottom six forward group contains more tenacity than the crew who wore teal last season. All in the midst of what arguably could be goaltender Evgeni Nabokov's best season in the NHL.

It's a good time to be a Sharks fan. And naturally, it's also a good time for some perspective.

"We don’t know anything until they drop the puck in April. It’s why it’s so frustrating," said ElvisVF101. "It’s why we can’t make any bold predictions in January, February and March. We just have to wait for April and see what team shows up."

That goes for both sides of the coin.

Go Sharks.

Damn Mr. Plank..

What in the world are you doing up so late? Me? I just survived blowing up the Collectors all to hell and made it all the way back with my whole crew intact. No to mention that Miranda showed me her nice big rack.

But seriously.. If one person had to go, I would probably choose Seto. He, Pavs, Patty, and Nabby are all due for raises and we can’t possibly keep them all, especially with the way Patty’s going with all his goals. We might be able to get a quality defender plus a 20 goal veteran in return for Seto. Not bad imo. It would be a slap in Clowe’s face if we traded him, right after we signed him for a 4 year extension.

Keep Pavelski and Marleau

God, how much will Marleau and Nabby want? Although we don’t have a guy who’s ready to fill the void if Nabby leaves, and yes that is risky, I think we have to keep Pavelski and Marleau and take our chances with another goalie. We’ve got Heatley and Thornton, who are sucking down over $15 million in cap space next year and then there’s Boyle’s contract as well. Wow! I hope the cap goes up?

I agree

Sharks gotta keep Pavs and Marleau! Blake will come off the books which will free up roughly 3.5 mil which will help a little. I think his deal was a one year deal, correct? I would hate to see Seto go because I fell his potential is off the charts…he just needs some more mental toughness, imo. Pavelski will be our next captain…I hope

Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!

This is correct

Auto-post is our friend… although Plank has, on many occasions, been up to post things at 5:33am (auto-post only works on the hour or half-hour).

Wish they were a playoff team...

It would be nice to be playing a top 8 team tonight, but the Blues did just win last night in Chicago. Let’s get a win here!

Over on ESPN, Pierre mentioned the Sharks might want to ask Kaberle up in Toronto to move his NTC. Interesting, because Clowe seems like the type of guy Burke would love, and maybe Huskins would go the other way to fill Kaberle’s spot. Just speculation…that’s all.

Or did I miss it.

Here’s mine:

Sharks win 4 – 3. Goals from Heatley (x2), Thornton and Douglas Murray who stops trying to level Paul Kariya long enough to score the last goal of the game for the win.

Its very true that any momentum, or perceived momentum, a team garners right now will be pretty useless after a two week layoff. However, its still pretty disconcerting at how poorly the Sharks have played against the probably playoff teams this year. And they’ve played these teams in the midst of huge winning streaks and such. So, at least with this team, its not a momentum thing. It’s definately a mental thing (especially with Detroit…I think we’re finally getting our feet moving in the right direction against Chicago, somewhat). This team needs to play with the confidence that they truly are the best team in the league, and then go assert themseelves. That’s the only way we’re going to get by anyone in the playoffs.

I guess I’d go so far to say that it really doesn’t matter how well we play in March either. What matters is staying healthy, and then finding a new mindset for the second season that actually works for them. We’ve seen both sides of the coin with this team (really hot going into the playoffs, and choking in the second round…being ice cold going into the playoffs, choking in the first round). Until the puck drops for that first playoff game, nothing they do in the regular season will give us a very good indication of how this team will respond. They do have the makeup and depth to make a run…probably better than in any previous year…they just have to decide to do it.

Greiss starting, Boyle still out, as per WTC. Also the normal “no comment” from DW about the potential Wallin trade.

Glad to see Greiss getting another start. I’d like to see him get one more start on this road trip…in Detroit. Might as well give it a try, since nothing else has worked, and Nabby’s record against them is atrocious.

I’m glad they’re taking their time with Boyle. If he’s going to be playing all olympic break, then I don’t want there to be any setbacks while he’s out there. Making sure he’s healthy before we lose control of his playing time for a few weeks would be a good idea.

me 4

I was pretty demoralized by that loss. They just never seem to possess that extra gear that playoff teams demonstrate when it matters. I hope guys like Heatley bring that in the playoffs. I thought Nabby was decent against Detroit, he just seemed to over-pursue those quick cross ice passes that left the net wide open. A D man or forward who was not tripped could have helped…but hey, give Greiss a run. Maybe team teal steps up to support the youngster.

ESPN announces Ryan Whitney of the Anaheim Ducks and Tim Gleason of the Carolina Hurricanes will join Team USA to replace injured New Jersey Devils defenseman Paul Martin and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek.

That means the Sharks and Ducks will send the same # to Van. + Anaheim prospect Luca Sbisa, Switzerland.

I'm not sure if this Wallin trade is such a bad thing anymore.

Carolina fans are really sad to see him go, they say he is a top 4 defenseman, he obviously has experience and a ring. If we don’t give up too much, I think this might be a good trade.

Excerpt from Billy Pilgrim of Game Time (SLGT's newspaper)
…the Sharks should be in a surly, nasty mood after referees Tom Kowal and Dean Morton royally screwed them by handing the hated Detroit Red Wings a win in San Jose Tuesday night with some of the worst officiating yet seen in the NHL this season. It wasn‘t just that the octopus boys had six power plays to the Sharks three, it was the inconsistency of the referees‘ calls as the Sharks were penalized for picky, inconse-quential ―fouls‖ while many obvious Wings infractions were ignored.

So we’re not the only ones who saw it.

To be fair, they weren’t exactly impartial observers, and they certainly weren’t on the Detroit side of things.

That said, yeah, the refs sucked. Some of the calls still piss me off.

The Jeffio Joke of the Day (courtesy of Game Time)

Dany Heatley came to the rink one day and noticed that Joe Thornton was wearing an earring. Heatley was curious about the sudden change in Thornton’s fashion sense.

So [he] went up to Thornton and said, “I didn‘t know you were into earrings.”

“Don‘t make such a big deal, it‘s only an earring,” Thornton replied sheepishly.

Heatley asked, “Really? How long have you been wearing one?”

Thornton replied, “Ever since my wife found it in our bed.”
