Canes GM Jim Rutherford: "I would expect we will know something here in the next 24 hours"
Courtesy of the News Observer, a Carolina based newspaper:
Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said Thursday that a trade involving veteran defenseman Niclas Wallin was in the works and should be resolved before Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.
"We have a pending trade for him," Rutherford said. "He has a no-trade (clause in his contract). He has to waive that, and I think at this point in time his agent is working through some things with the other team.
As Fear The Fin reported yesterday, TSN broke the news that Wallin would land in San Jose. No official sources have specified what players, prospects, or picks would be involved going the other way.
That being said, there has been some speculation.
"The guy who writes prospect articles on Sharkspage and is actually a hockey scout in real life, Max Giese, mentioned on HFBoards that Carolina is somewhat enamored with Joslin," Fear The Fin commenter Tarlinian said. "I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if we saw something like Joslin and Shelley for Wallin."
David Pollak of Working The Corners also mentioned that the Hurricanes were looking at a young asset to bring to their team.
If Joslin and Shelley are moved for Wallin, that would indicate Marc-Edouard Vlasic is due to be placed on the LTIR, granting them a cap space exception. In this situation, when Vlasic is reactivated, GM Doug Wilson will have to move another player.
Roster players that fit the requirements of being young and clear enough cap space include Devin Setoguchi, Torrey Mitchell, and Joe Pavelski. Common sense indicates Mitchell would be the likely candidate from this pool, leaving the Sharks with seven NHL defenseman on their current roster once Boyle and Vlasic return.
San Jose would also be left with four centers on the roster, those players being Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, Manny Malhotra, and Scott Nichol. Barring a call up from the Worcester Sharks, it is possible Manny Malhotra will be bumped off of the second line in order to provide stability in the faceoff circle throughout the lineup, with Ryane Clowe seeing a return to the top six.
Logan Couture, Worcester's top center, is currently dealing with a shoulder injury and it is uncertain as to when he will return.
Go Sharks.

I could see maybe Joslin and a draft pick but Shelley is 33 and JR says he wants to go much younger, but who knows.

what about Staubitz instead of Shelley? Young middleweight rather than older heavyweight.

Is Carolina even in need of an enforcer?

I just mentioned Shelly as a possible salary dump to make cap space for Wallin. You could substitute any other player of similar value currently on the roster for him, i.e., Staubitz.or if you’re really feeling generous, Huskins.

Oh man, I hope they do not trade Mitchell.
He has not done too well, but I love the guy too much. Would moving Huskins clear enough space?

Now they’re saying maybe just the Sharks 2nd round pick. If thats the case the Sharks made out like bandits in this deal. He’s worth more than just that.

Are the cap numbers right?
Not to be the overseer but I was under the impression that the Sharks have enough salary to afford some low salary under the cumulative cap space to afford a player without using the LTIR exemption. Please point me to where I can learn more! And is there any truth to the rumor of Huskins to Chipotle for a round of Burritos?

Pickles would have to go on LTIR for this to work with just a pick.

If Vlasic goes on LTIR...
He’s eligible to come off right after the Olympic break against the March 2nd vs. the Kovy Devils.
10 games is LTRI and it starts with the Buffalo game for him.
Not a terrible situation. Vlasic should rest if he needs it

Dumb Question
Bu dollars against the cap are counted by days, and not games, right? That said, what would prevent the Sharks from, say, shipping Seto, McGinn, and Demers right before the Olympic break (all are EL players, no waivers), and collecting that extra cap space, particularly Seto’s?
Another Question:
The LTIR exemption doesn’t build up? All that space gained from Mitchell/Blake/etc being out earlier is lost when they are activated? CapGeek lists it almost as an additional cushion for the year long salary math, not a temporary buffer while the guy is out. Cause if it does build up, if I’m the Sharks I put Dan Boyle on the LTIR now through the Oylmpic break (which would be funny, see, since he would be playing for Canada), take that $720K of cap space received, and pay for Wallin. But that only works if it builds up.

1. The cap is calculated daily.
2. They’re making next to nothing in NHL standards. Also, there’s an Olympic roster freeze. I don’t believe those days count against the cap. Besides, the Sharks can just send McGinn and Demers down to Worcester.
3. It builds up. But then Boyle’s out for 10 games minimum, which would suck if he’s ready by game 6 or 7.

I think so
This came up in the Kovy talks. I don’t think cap space accrues here. However the players do get paid by their team. They might count against the cap, but we’d have to check the CBA

An ELC does not imply that you’re not subject to waivers. Waivers eligibility is determined by games played, and I’m pretty sure Seto is now eligible for waivers. McGinn and Demers will definitely be sent down before the Olympic break. The AHL is actually playing then, so the additional playing time will do them good too.

So I accidently read some of the comments on WTC
that was a mistake. Seto, McGinn, or Coutre for Wallin. Shoot me…

Hey now, WTC is much worse that HFBoards, which at least has some redeeming qualities. Most of the comments on WTC would make you think that Doug Wilson was at Brian Sabean levels of incompetence.

I hardly browse WTC, but from what I hear it is a hell-hole. HF Boards though has some pretty bad proposals. I propose a compromise: that trade is Eklund bad.

Does this make us Sharks hockey snobs?
To look down upon the hockey ignorant, emotionally unstable, and grammatically incorrect over the those other sites? Now if you’ll excuse me I have a sniffer of brandy to drink and a polo match to watch.

That's what I was thinking about one day.
And I wondered if there’s another Sharks site that looks down upon us. I would find that funny.

So apparently
the trade is held up because DW is looking to sign him to 2 years while Wallin just wants 1. I don’t understand why he doesn’t want the stability of a 2-year deal.
