Another Niclas Wallin Update

Per Canes Country, our Carolina Hurricanes affiliate on SBN.

Chuck Kaiton was on 99.9 The Fan late today and told Mike Maniscalco that the trade sending Niclas Wallin to San Jose was close to being completed, but was still not finalized.  The problem?  Wallin's agent was negotiating a contract extension with Sharks GM, Doug Wilson.

According to Kaiton, he believed that the Sharks wanted to sign the big defenseman for a longer term than Wallin originally wanted.  Apparently, the Swede did not want to sign a deal for longer than one year, but Wilson wants two.  Plus, there is still a small matter of dollars and cents to be agreed upon as well.

The "Hall of Fame Voice" of the Hurricanes said that the return would be a good one for the Carolina organization, reportedly a second round draft pick.  But to give up that much, Wilson wanted to make sure he could lock up "The Swede" for longer than a year.

- Canes Country

Time to kick around all the information that is out there.

David Pollak of Working The Corners reported yesterday that Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford referred to San Jose giving up a young asset in exchange for Niclas Wallin. I have never heard of a draft pick being described as a young asset-- they are not synonymous with each other, at least in terms of the common verbiage used by those describing potential trades.

So, if Canes play by play announcer Chuck Kaiton and general manager Jim Rutherford are both citing facts, adding them together means San Jose is giving up a second round draft choice as well as a young player (Joslin, Mitchell etc., take your pick). That's overpayment to the nth degree, and just doesn't make sense. Someone has it wrong here, or two potential deals are in place-- one with a second round draft choice (contingent upon Wallin negotiating a contract extension), and the other with a young asset Rutherford initially alluded to.

There's a third option, and I'll get to that after the jump.

Worst case scenario-- Doug Wilson has lost his mind, like Darryl Sutter before him, and thinks that Wallin is the only missing piece to a successful San Jose Stanley Cup run. He pays accordingly and Fear The Fin shuts down for a month while we all develop drug habits.

Star-divide

Another thing that doesn't quite add up is the fact that Kaiton said San Jose was negotiating a two year extension for the 35 year old blueliner. As we know, Doug Wilson does not negotiate contracts during the season. It may be a case of playing by different rules due to the fact Wallin is not currently on the Sharks roster, but that seems to be a liberal interpretation of self imposed organizational procedure.

Regardless, you can only imagine what the conversation at the bargaining table would sound like:

Wilson: So Nic we're looking at something in the two year range. We like what you bring to the table and could use another veteran on the backend to eat up some minutes.

Wallin: ooooOOOoooo

Wilson: Um, I'm not quite sure what that means. Care to elaborate?

Wallin: Hamburgers.

Wilson: Yeah, sure, we could throw in some hamburgers if that makes the decision easier.

Wallin: Nic. Nic the nickname.

Wilson: What? What the hell is going on here? Do you want to call your agent and talk this over or something?

Wallin: Hey momma.

If Wallin is signed to the rumored two year extension you have to wonder if Kent Huskins will be next on the trade block, possibly with Ryane Clowe. Those two players combined clear enough cap space to bring in a premier top-four defenseman that can take some of the pressure off Rob Blake when the unit is completely healthy again; Jamie McGinn finds himself on the third line where he, in my opinion, has deserved to play all season.

If Clowe is moved, the return would hopefully involve a player that has at least one year remaining on his contract.

As for the the third option I mentioned earlier in this article, it is possible that another Carolina Hurricanes player is included in the deal. This consolidates the seemingly conflicting statements that a second round pick and young asset would be what San Jose is giving up for Wallin. I have spoken with Canes Country over email the last two days and they explained Tim Gleason is not on the market; therefore, in my eyes at least, Ray Whitney and Joe Corvo would be the possible players Wilson may be interested in.

Whitney, along with Wallin, both have NTC's built into their contract. Corvo fulfills FTF's perceived need for another top-four defenseman and would be a better fit with San Jose in relation to Whitney, previous history with the organization notwithstanding.

Of course, that additional player is purely speculation. Wallin has been the only Hurricanes player mentioned in every report circulating, and I would be very surprised if this happens. Just something to chew on.

*****

There was a question in the comments last night that I figured deserves some explaining on the front page. When a player is placed on the LTIR, the team is only temporarily allowed to exceed the cap by that player's base salary until he returns. Placing Vlasic on the LTIR for ten games just means that the Sharks can exceed the cap by $3.1 M (Vlasic's hit). It is not like sending a player through the Worcester Shuttle; cap space does not accrue. I know that I have been confused with this before as well.

Hope that clears up any questions.

*****

We should know something more later today, with 4:30 PST being the likely deadline as reported by Carolina based newspaper the News Observer.

Go Sharks.

More FTF coverage of Niclas Wallin can be found here and here.

I would never trade Clowe

unless we can get rid of Huskins crappy contract as well. THats the only thing that would make me feel good about it.

Can we tell Patty to stop scoring goals so we can afford to re-sign him this summer?

I when this deal gets done, hopefully it is just the start of the tweaking....

I hope that DW can also pull in Whitney, that would be a nice boost to our run.

There was a question in the comments last night that I figured deserves some explaining on the front page. When a player is placed on the LTIR, the team is only temporarily allowed to exceed the cap by that player’s base salary until he returns.

Actually, that’s not quite true. The LTIR player’s salary still counts against the cap, and the team is allowed to add up to that amount in salary to replace the LTIR player, even if that new total exceeds the salary cap. If the Sharks were $1M below the cap when Vlasic is placed on LTIR, they can go up to $2.1M over until he returns. If the Sharks were $3.1M below the cap at that point, they can’t go over at all. In this particular case, the Sharks are close to the cap, so the LTIR exception will be very close to the entirety of Vlasic’s salary.

reading ya loud and clear

I was never a fan of the move for him initially at the dollar value he apparently was commanding. Its one of those handcuffing moves that hurts when needed most.

At least they were looking forward some and limited the length of the deal. Sometimes you pay for the legend and not necessarily the production. Hopefully team teal is getting 3.5 million worth of veteran leadership from the new C.

If they actually are working out some sort of extension, I’d actually be ok with that. Not because of any attachment to Wallin…I really don’t know much about him. But mostly its because I’m tired of bringing in rentals at the deadline who have to real attachment to San Jose and are seemingly more concerned with the approaching offseason than in winning a Cup in a city he doesn’t care about. I don’t know. I guess I just feel it might help things chemistry-wise if the players we are bringing in aren’t heading right back out the door in a few months.

It’s so hard to analyze this without knowing the specifics of his contract, but at face value I don’t like it. There are many players like him across the league that could be considered a substitute for his services, and if we’re negotiating a contract extension already, it makes me think the Canes will want a little more back than if he was just a “rental”.

That being said, we’ll see how it shakes out. So hard to really analyze this thing with multiple sources of information reporting somewhat contradictory assets that the Sharks would be giving up.

The extension bit is puzzling

The only theory I’d have is that Wallin would like to play in Europe, perhaps to be closer to family. I’ve had a crackpot theory that lots of Russians are going to bolt for the KHL so they can play in Sochi in 2014, but I don’t know if Wallin would even be in the conversation for Team Sweden in 2014.

Whatever. GIVE ME MY FINALIZED TRADE NEWS ALREADY!

Not knowing anything about Wallin, and having read what's been posted on him here

is this a good pickup for the Sharks? I know a warm body on defense is a plus given the injury situation and depending on who we send to Carolina, but does anybody know if this guy is worthwhile or worthless? Thanks.

As I mentioned on the first post about Wallin, he definitely has some value as a depth guy. That being said, its not as if the Sharks will be getting a whole lot better— he will be on the third pairing.

by PNK on Feb 5, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Truth.

It’d be nice to get a top 4 guy. They tend to be more expensive, though. DW and staff must have liked what they have seen from Wallin, though. Otherwise they wouldn’t be spending so much time trying to sign him to an extension (if the rumors are true).

Although I have yet to hear definitively if he’s any better as a stay at home big body than Leach, who we’re paying peanuts to this year. Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Thanks for answering my Q, Plank...

And whoever pointed out waivers was based on GP, good to know. With that said, I can’t imagine DW pulling this trade as is.

But, Wallin may be a bit underrated. He was #3 on the canes in Quality of Competition faced. So essentially, he was the #2 trusted Dman on the team. Honestly, I think he is probably just as effective as Murray, without the flashy big hits. A solid #4 guy, from the numbers. Someone who doesn’t have to be given shielded minutes, can go up against the Byfugliens and Ladds of the world and hold his own. Maybe put him with Vlasic, make Blake and Demers your #3 pairing?

by ruben398 on Feb 5, 2010 12:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, like I said in the first piece, he definitely has some value. Sees a lot of d-zone draws as well. I just don’t think he’s the answer on the Sharks blueline. It’s also completely contingent on what we’re giving up.

Until I see that it’s hard to call it either way. Too many variables.

Waiting...waiting

I agree with Plank that something doesn’t seem right here. This feels like the deal with Anaheim last year to me. We got two players who we were supposed to believe would help for a Cup run. That didn’t happen, and many would argue we are still paying for that trade- with Huskins contract. The guys of value over there are Whitney, Corvo and Gleason. If none of those guys are coming back, I don’t get it or like it.

by Ronnibily on Feb 5, 2010 11:07 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Corvo would be pretty awesome to have. I haven’t heard his name in connection to coming this way at all, though. THis is probably just a Wallin for something trade. We’ll see.

Going on record here

I don’t like this situation one bit. The guy has 0 goals and 5 assists this season. While he won the cup 4 years ago, his most famous moment was when he momentarily lost his mind and shot the puck into his own net.

Now, he’s trying to manipulate his NTC to allow himself to weasel out of SJ after next season. This doesn’t sound like a character guy who’s willing to do what it takes to win the cup.

If this trade frees up enough cap space for us to land another reasonably big-time defenseman, or to sign Marleau or Nabby next season, then fine. But it doesn’t look like that’s happening here.

PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG, DW!

by TeemuSucks on Feb 5, 2010 11:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The one thing I’ve consistantly read is that Wallin IS a character guy, if nothing else. He’s not a scoring guy…he’s a stay at home defense guy. So you won’t see scoring out of him. It’s like saying we shouldn’t have Murray because he only has 3 goals. We all know he provides much more than that.

And it sounds to me, at least the way things are reading, that its the Sharks who want to sign him to an extension. His contract is up after this season, so he’s not trying to “weasel his way out of SJ” after next season. If he didn’t want to be here, he wouldn’t waive his NTC, or wouldn’t talk extension and leave in July.

OK that makes more sense.

And, thinking about it, I can see why he’d rather sign for one year than two. He’s no spring chicken, and it might be advantageous for his contract to come up at age 36, instead of 37.

"It's not so much me as it's Roenick."

by TeemuSucks on Feb 5, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the only thing missing from all of this is how much emphasis the Sharks organization seems to put on the phrase “veteran presence”. Isn’t that how Blake was named captain? How Roenick and Lemieux finished out their tenures by dressing in teal?

DW and the rest of the crew seem to weigh experience more than tangible, stat-ready results; it’s how they hope to bring in the prospects, and probably a good part of the reason the Woosta Shuttle is so active — it gives the young’ns time to skate with guys that can give solid advice and provide a structural backbone to the raw talent they already possess.

Could that be what they’re going for with something like this? Another “he’s been there” situation that expands on the tone of the season to date?

by xarexerax on Feb 5, 2010 12:32 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This still reeks of the Anaheim deal last year to me. Those guys had been there and done it. But their tangible skills were lacking. From everything out there, it seems like this is happening. I just hope DW can spin this in the end and get one or two of those quality guys from Carolina (Corvo, Whitney, Gleason). Maybe that is what the hold up is about? There HAS to be something else going on here.

by Ronnibily on Feb 5, 2010 12:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I’m not saying that the above logic makes it a good deal by any means; just that it may be the thoughts of those involved; after all, the trade you’re talking about was done for those reasons. Do you think they’ve adjusted their opinions greatly based on what came of that? Hard to say — seems a lot of GMs and other such figures have “their way” of doing things, and they don’t make a lot of adjustments to what they think is the right approach.
