The Pursuit For A Defenseman Reignited
With news dropping about thirty minutes ago that Niclas Wallin wouldn't be coming to the Sharks ("No Trade" fanshot here, wasted hours found here, here, and here), Plank and TCY got a talking about some potential trade targets that San Jose might be in the market for in the next month.
This is where you guys come in. Drop some names in the comments, and we'll pick our favorites to cover more in-depth in the coming weeks.
We've also provided a partial list of some of the guys we plan on writing pieces for to get you started, but keep in mind this is by no means an entire compilation-- there's a large amount of guys we're interested in, and a lot of the names found below run the gamut from available (Corvo, Hamhuis) to tough to get (Kaberle with his NTC). We don't give a shit though. Half the charm of the trade deadline is rosterbatin'.
Joe Corvo (CAR), Dennis Wideman (BOS), Dan Hamhuis (NSH), Pavel Kubina (ATL), Tomas Kaberle (TOR), Francois Beauchemin (TOR), Jan Hejda (CBJ), Marek Zidlicky (MIN), Dennis Seidenberg (FLA), Jordin Leopold (FLA).
There's no wrong answers, and we're not going to even touch the comments section of this post. It's your show for the rest of today.
Godspeed, and Go Sharks.

Couple of Russian names – Anton Volchenkov.
UFA this summer, although with Ottawa back in the playoff race, I doubt he’s available at any cost.
We should have included Clowe in the Heatley trade and grabbed Volch then.
Denis Grebeshkov, RFA this summer. Actually one of the only good players on the Oilers roster – if Russia will do well at the Olympics, it’ll be his coming out party. Good player on both sides of the puck.
Chances of either trade ~ 0%, seeing how DW naturally hates all Europeans, unless they’re (1) goalies, (2) from Germany or (3) they’re wide-boned Swedes who have American names.

You suggest Russians?
I have never been more surprised in my life.
Plank and I had Volchenkov on the radar, but took him off for the same reason you mentioned.
As for Grebeshkov, I doubt the Oil will sell on one of their best young players, unless the bounty is ridiculous.

Should we offer Heatley back to them, since he no longer has NTC?
Wouldn’t that be awkward?

I doubt it’s even possible but how awesome would it be if we could get Shea Weber on the team. He’s got pretty much everything you could want in an defensemen. He’s a great D man with awesome offensive ability, he can log heavy minutes, and he’s got good physical play.

That would be a dream, but not with Nashville in playoff race. He’s also pretty much a face of their franchise.

lol crap, i dunno how i missed that article. Yeah i doubt we’d be able to get a guy like Weber during the middle of the season when the predators are in the playoff race =\. But godddd he would be perfect; then again he’d be perfect for any team really lol.
by Khaaz on Feb 5, 2010 3:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
hahahahah
NO.
A realistic cost for Weber (I kid you not, homerism off) would be Setoguchi/Vlasic/top prospect and top pick.
Dude’s our building block, franschise cornerstone, and could well end up the best defenseman in the league before he’s done.
The guy you really should look into, though, is Hamhuis. Pretty damn good in his own right and we can’t keep him.

coyotes aren’t giving up one of their best d-men as long as they’re still in it and especially not to a division opponent. A+ for the mention though yandle would be awesome

Skating backwards.
He’s been terrible out here for some time, but whatever Tippett and Ulf Samuelsson have done, he’s a complete 180.
I used to dread seeing Yandle on the ice, as he looked shy and defensive. His physicality isn’t non-existent, but it is minimal for someone with his size.
With his offensive side blossoming this season, his skating seems faster, and his game much more sound. He’s more aggressive when it comes to jumping into the play, and it shows on his stat sheet.
Biggest weakness? Skating backwards and trying to pokecheck oncoming forwards that can dangle. When you have his size, and Ovechkin comes in on you, you stop looking at the puck and start lining up his solarplexis. Even in that aspect, he’s better. I just hate to watch him in the corners with one hand on his stick , poking at the puck like a woman with a mouse under the fridge.
Baby steps, I guess.

another pipe dream
but i’ve talked with a few people here about how awesome it would be to get Robyn Regehr.
but what with Calgary’s recent dealings and the hole that would leave in their D and the fact that they’re fighting to keep a spot in the playoffs, not to mention what we’d have to give up to get him, this would never happen.
by PNK on Feb 5, 2010 3:51 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I thought about him too
I think if Calgary hadnt have given up Phaneuf, or if Phaneuf was playing better, a Regehr trade might be more realistic.

especially considering his current salary and the role he’s expected to play on the team

Mathieu Schneider hasn't played for the Sharks yet...
has he?
You want experience (old guys)?
Take a look at Darryl Sydor on a 1yr deal in St. Louis or Kim Johnsson on the last year of his deal in Minnesota.
You want youth?
Exelby said he wanted out of Toronto, Jordan Leopold is a FA after the Panthers miss the postseason.

Jan Hedja
Columbus are sellers for sure, his salary seems reasonable and he has another year on his contract. He is a strong defensive Dman. That’s who I would target.
Huskins + Joslin + 3rd round pick (if necessary)
If we landed him we could rock three lines of D with good offensive/defensive pairings:
Hedja/Murray-Boyle
Blake-Vlasic
Murray/Hedja-Demers
by jMoneyBrah on Feb 5, 2010 4:27 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
i like Hedja
but i also like Joslin, i’m really looking forward to watching him develop in the NHL
by PNK on Feb 5, 2010 4:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I like Joslin too
I want to see him develop too. He seems like he could be a top 4 Dman some day. But he is still a year or two away from that. I only threw him in because if we were to make a trade happen we would have to send something of value their way. Huskins is def not that ;)
it basically comes down to Jos or Demers. Right now I like Demers more as he seems to be ready to start contributing right now.

Joslin is definitely more accountable in his own zone. He’s not an early bloomer, but I think he’s developing nicely at his age for potenitally a two-way def-man.

I haven’t been impressed watching him over the last 2-3 years. I know he’s young, but he’s as young as Huskins is old in the scheme of things.
Even Randy and Drew mentioned how he didn’t look like he wanted the puck during some of the important moments of the last game. Brian Boitano was a smooth skater, but I don’t want him playing D for the Sharks.

What’s with all the love Joslin gets? He doesn’t look any better than Huskins to me. I know he’s young but I haven’t seen anything from him to indicate that he’ll end up being a top D man or anything.
Demers on the other hand has definitely shown some potential, his only weakness is that he falls apart when under pressure which is pretty understandable for a guy as young as him and you can be sure that he’ll get past that as he gets experience and gains confidence. We definitely shouldn’t trade Demers, although he’s cost us a couple important games now, he’ll improve and end up being a great D man with a lot of offensive ability.
by Khaaz on Feb 5, 2010 5:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you can look at the improvements that Crankshaft has made over the last two years, as a good example of what a lot of people hope for Joslin.
Murray was too slow, and not good enough offensively earlier in his career. I think a lot of people thought he was going to be a #6-7 Dman his whole career. Don’t get me wrong, Murray still skates like he has cement in his boots, but he has tweaked his game and now is effective in his role. Maybe Joslin can do the same. Maybe not.
I still would trade Jos for Hedja.
by jMoneyBrah on Feb 5, 2010 7:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Most top d-man take a while to develop their game. He’s been more of an offensive guy in the AHL, so learning to play solid defense in the NHL game in and game out will take some time. He hasn’t lit up the scoreboard, but he seems to be focusing on being a better defensive player right now.

+1 for Burns
Tremendous skill set. Don’t know the likelihood of prying him away, but maybe they’re down on him because of the injuries and it’s possible that because of their familiarity with San Jose’s roster, Minnesota may favor some players over him.
His rep was pretty high coming into the season when a lot of people were projecting him for Team Canada. I’d be interested to see what kind of package San Jose could put together for him.

In other news
The Woosta Sharks had another “Guaranteed Win” night tonight at the DCU Center and decided to make it more interesting tonight. Not only did they guarantee a win (or everybody in attendance gets free tickets to another game), they did it with their backup goalie.
Sexy stepped up to the challenge and put up his first professional shutout.
That puts the baby Sharks in 1st in the Atlantic and I think 3rd overall in the AHL.

Unlikely as he's in our division already
but what about someone like Mark Fistric? Just browsing some stats and I notice he’s got a nice plus/minus (15) on a shitty team (Dallas, and I don’t care where they sit in the standing, I was gonna call them shitty) with few points. He’s obviously not creating his own offense, as he’s only a 17=8 in 48 games.

Would rather have Trevor Daley
But don’t see a trade happening within the division in which we have to give to get a Trevor Daley. Besides, you send a Ryane Clowe or a Devin Setogutchi to play for Marc Crawford, and you can basically kiss their career goodbye. They don’t deserve that.
