Kaberle trade a possibility
The Leafs have said they won't trade Tomas Kaberle, but the Globe and Mail writes, "An offer from a contender such as the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks could change things." With the Toronto Maple Leafs acquiring Dion Phaneuf, the buzz around league circles is that Kaberle will be traded.

Yummy. I still think this is just the media blowing smoke, but at least the Globe is respectable.
Will be interesting to see how active the Leafs are after the sad situation of Burke’s son. I’m guessing not very.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was thinking as well. Understandable.

I think it only really applies to before the Olympic break, though. At some point life moves on, and I’m sure Brendan would want that for his father.
What a brave young man.

But at the end of the day, the Canadian Sports Media are more than a little bit like the English Sports Media; it’s more about saying interesting things than saying true things. I wouldn’t put too much stock in the report as saying anything relevant. After all, it also says we’re going to be a part of the bidding war for Ray Whitney.

omg YES PLEASE

What do you think we’d have to give up for a player like Kaberle?
I’ve been in touch with Pension Plan Puppets, and they said a first round draft pick is non-negotiable, needs to be involved.
After that, it’s up in the air. Clowe wouldn’t need to be involved in terms of value, but you’d have to move him eventually in terms of salary.

Clowe + a first is an overpayment IMO
Clowe is younger and getting better. Kaberle is older and a little past his prime.
I’d say, Clowe + Mitchell and a third, tops.
I might want to package Kaberle with a 3rd and then give back a 2nd or something like that.
But nothing is happening with Toronto till probably after olympics. Burke won’t be available.

The other thing I like about that possibility is that Kaberle is signed for next year and no more. Perfect replacement for Blake next year. And we can trade him next year if it doesn’t work out and replenish picks.
That contract won’t kill us.

Agreed that when Toronto needs a big body up front so badly, even when we need a top 4 defenseman, this Clowe and a 1st would be overpayment. I think we’d get something back in return for this package, in addition to Kaberle. Even if it was something like Clowe and a 1st for Kaberle and a 2nd, I think I might sign on.

I take it back
I rescind my offer because I don’t think this helps us unless Boyle or Vlasic is out for the long term. In the off-season, if Blake retires, I would make this move, but only if we are able to keep Malhotra, Nichol, Marleau, Setoguchi, and Ortmeyer.

Problem is, Toronto doesn’t have a second. They gave it up in the deal for Kessel this summer.
And I agree— Clowe and a first for Kaberle is overpayment. We need a top draft pick this season since we haven’t had one the last two years. Only way I trade it is if we are getting a young player who can contribute to the team for years to come.

The problem with trading with the Leafs is that RW knows our roster and in out – better than anyone else in this league. Maybe he wants Clowe – but he knows as well as we do that Clowe is inconsistent, as is anyone else that we think might get traded (Seto, Mitchell, etc).
If we can get Kaberle, I say go for it. He’ll be a huge addition.
this would be awesome, but obviously getting rid of a clowe/seto type is a risk as well. probably worth it
I wouldn't give up Seto. Plain and simple.

Seto isn't going anywhere this season
Inconsistency and all at his cap number he s too valuable to our cap strapped team.

The good news is that his cap hit for this year is 4.25 mil.
So we would not have to give up too much salary to get him, but it would have to be Clowe and another player if he was to go. If we do make the trade, then I propose Clowe + Huskins + mid-round pick. A first round pick with a player is overkill.

but I’d be okay with that

Oh yeah, I do too.
I would hate to lose Clowe also, but I think McGinn could step into his role.

who am I going to complain about if we lose Huskins?

Unfortunately, without a first, Kaberle doesn’t get done. Period.
What you could do is flip a first plus Ferriero and another prospect for Kaberle, with Clowe and Huskins being moved for another piece beforehand.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
That makes sense.
I just hope the Sharks could find a way to get someone this year without having to trade for a first rounder.

Whitney could be the subject of a bidding war between the Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Well that’s interesting, have not heard the Sharks were extremely interested in Whitney before. It would be cool to see him win with the team that drafted him.

I'll reiterate my comment from above
With the Canadian Media, speculation is sufficient to print. I wouldn’t put any stock in what the article has to say. Kaberle is what we might need, so it’s a story.

Whitney+Kaberle feedback
Good idea
Kaberle for Ferriero, first, and prospect is good
Clowe and Huskins for Whitney
+1!
Go Sharks!
Money doesn't work.
Taking in 8m + and only giving out about 5m

It doesn't matter
Salary Cap works on a daily basis. You don’t trade away salary you’ve already paid. And you must pay the remainder of what is owed. Daily Cap Hit is basically equal to the contract anyway. You can do the daily math, but the overall cap hit becomes our responsibility, so you can still track it that way.
