One night ago he was eye to eye with the Leafs, fighting to stay out the Eastern Conference cellar. Tonight he heads into the ACC on a team that has legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations.

Jackpot.

As mentioned yesterday (go vote in the poll by the way), Niclas Wallin is the newest member of the San Jose Sharks. He'll probably see limited minutes tonight as he gets used to his teammates-- I would assume he'd partner with Leach until Vlasic returns, with that eventually bumping Huskins down to that third pairing.

Giggy's been on fire since being reunited with Francois Allaire in Toronto-- two straight shutouts, the first time that has happened in franchise history. Good stuff.

Alright, time to hit the Omega Four Relay. Priorities, priorities.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Huskins, Leach, and Wallin.

Go Sharks.

Go Sharks!!

Go Wallin!! Forget pairing with Leach, a line with Crankshaft and Wallin will be awesome!! Speaking of Crank, what should we nickname Wallin?

I’m trying to decide whether “The Wall” is too obvious or way too obvious.

Petey and Fresh always dunking on Spartans,
Biscuits in baskets from Heatley and Thornton,
Bam-Bam and Gore on the way to some rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

I plan on taking plenty of pictures of our newest Shark. I’m sitting behind Nabby’s net, in the lowers (row 20-something I think).

Gotta leave the US now – sitting at my hostel in Buffalo. GO SHARKS.

I don’t think I’ll have a chance to ritualistically consume anything Toronto-themed, as I’ll be at the office until somewhere in the third period (damn early games); if I get the chance, I certainly will.

D-pairings

I disagree…Do Murray-Wallin (I hope that’s the 3rd pairing if the Sharks get top-4 D to play w/ Boyle), Boyle-Leach, and Blake-Huskins

Go Sharks!

by Dmitriy on Feb 8, 2010 11:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

That would be a slow line!

I think Boyle and Wallin work because you have your stay at home guy and your 4th forward in Boyle.

by Morti on Feb 8, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

depending upon how Wallin plays I can see that as being our shutdown pairing, which is what i’ve wanted all season.

Who plays with Boyle though? Huskins? Boyle needs a stay-at-home type partner.

Blake and Boyle would be a good offensive pairing, but I feel that should only be used on the PP. I can see them cheating too much and not being able to get back in time, leading to either goals or a lot of penalties (hooks/holds a la Blake).

Pickles? But then we’re left with Huskins/Blake which I wouldn’t be comfortable with.

by PNK on Feb 8, 2010 11:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If Wallin is a stay at home guy

We need to pair him with a puck mover.

Murray/Boyle works because Murray stays home while Boyle jumps in.

I know we’ve been down on Blake because he’s old and slow, but he’s been very effective jumping in and parking himself in front of the net. Wallin could be a good fit for him.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t leave us with much size on the last pairing, because you’re looking at some combination of Vlasic (when he comes back), Huskins, Demers, Leach and Joslin.

Blake/Huskins won’t have too many fans, but if Blake can be the big body on that pairing, it might free up Huskins to do the things he’s better at. He’s not an elite d-man by any means, but he has decent skating ability and can make a good outlet pass.

by ElvisVF101 on Feb 8, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I do think we're a bit harsh on Blake too

He is good about jumping in on the play and does some good stick work in our own end.

However, he’s slowed down as he’s gotten older and when gets caught out of position it costs us. I think he’s good on the second pairing, but he can’t put up the kind of minutes he used to and the kind of minutes we expect people like Boyle to eat up.

Also I don’t know how badly we need a “puckmover” on every pairing. I’d be interested to see how a pairing of Murray/Wallin would operate. Maybe it’d be a disaster, definitely don’t start Wallin out like that. Let him get a feel for the team first and visa versa and then we’ll see where he fits.

by PNK on Feb 8, 2010 12:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't necessarily NEED a puckmover on every pairing

But I think our situation is simply that we have an abundance of puckmovers.

Putting two stay at home types together means we’ll likely end up with a 2 puckmover pairing, and I’d rather avoid that. It’s a bit too high-risk for my taste.

In addition, as good as we are up front, if we have any hopes of making a deep postseason run, we need contributions from the back end. Our offense works best when the D can get shots and jump in. This is why I think spreading our puckmovers out is necessary.

That i can agree with

I just want a genuine shutdown defensive pairing.

Regardless, I have faith int eh organization and coaching staff to make the right choices.

by PNK on Feb 8, 2010 12:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

EXACTLY!

Blake-Vlasic and Wallin-Murray are good but who plays with Boyle? Need a top-4 D – Regehr or Kaberle now please? :)

I was just reading over at Canes Country

Those guys feel like they can get a first round pick for Ray Whitney.

Are they out of their minds? I love Whitney, dont get me wrong, but I wouldnt say he’s worth a first rounder. Maybe a second round pick and a mid level prospect.

He’s a point a game player. He’s worth a 1st rounder and maybe more since it is a seller’s market. Remember what we gave up for Guerrin? Kinda the same situation.

by Mr Tea on Feb 8, 2010 12:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Whitney wants an extension, probably 'til he ends his career, as well.

If he was ‘just a rental’, I’d say it’s not worth a first rounder. Definitely a second rounder though.

He was a free agent signing over the summer mainly for Worcester depth with occasional NHL spot duty. Not really expected to develop into an NHL talent. We originally thought he was going to be on the NHL roster (because the Sharks put him there on their site), but then found out that he was just confused with Ortmeyer. Also, has a great name.

I’m really glad they brought him in for tonight’s game. Not because he played well (I have no idea, I only got to hear a few minutes on the radio) but because it reminded me of all the goaltenders in the system. He was a standout at Michigan, I am glad to see someone give him a shot and showcase his ability. I think hes a great fit for 3rd/4th line center or winger.
