ESPN brought up a good point about San Jose
The article is for paid ‘insiders’, but they start off with San Jose and you’ll get the jist. San Jose finding a top 6 scorer in case someone focuses on closing down the Burger Joint.
That being said, maybe we should focus on available rentals/ pure scorers on the cheap.

That might just be the worst article, ever.
Why the hell would we trade for Biron. Why.

It’s not like both of our goalies started for their respective countries in the Olympics or anything… Oh, wait.

Wheres it say anything about trading for Biron? I’m like half awake but i totally can’t find anything talking about Biron in that article.
You have to be an insider to read the rest... and since I love you guys:
San Jose’s problem: Goaltending depth
There haven’t been too many problems for the Western Conference-leading Sharks this season. The team has been excellent at both scoring and preventing goals, at even strength and on special teams. Blue-line depth was an area of concern the Sharks addressed by adding Wallin. Perhaps the only remaining weakness is at backup goaltender. Thomas Greiss has played only 18 career NHL games and, in three seasons in the AHL, had a save percentage of just .901. Nabokov leads the NHL in our current player power rankings; if he goes down, the Sharks will be a significantly weaker team. Coming off the Olympics, it would be nice for Nabokov to get some rest. — Philip Myrland
Rumor Central says: Wilson indicated he might trade prospects, but he doesn’t want to mess up locker room chemistry. Plus, there would have to be some cap juggling, as E.J. mentioned.
The guy to get: G Martin Biron
Adding Biron would give the Sharks a solid backup goaltender, and he likely would be a cheap pickup, given his poor numbers this season (4-11-2, 3.24, .899). However, Biron’s win-loss record looks worse than it should because of horrible goal support, and Biron’s .917 save percentage over the past two seasons gives him a good recent track record. Biron would never play a meaningful game anyway, but San Jose should ensure th
at it won’t be completely derailed by an injury to its workhorse starting goalie. — Myrland

I mean, I get the fact that Greiss is a rookie, but this joker (who I’ve never heard of) seriously took one look at San Jose’s roster, didn’t recognize the goalie, and then proposed a trade for a backup that would not has a cap hit of $1.4 MM, but would require San Jose to trade away a roster player.
Great work ESPN.

Not saying that, but he probably hasn’t seen many Sharks games.

Well maybe he just doesn’t watch the Sharks but it seems like more than that since he he doesn’t know that Greiss has tons of international experience playing as Germany’s goalie maaanny times, including the olympic games this year and in 2006.
It definitely seems like he was like, “ok what do i say about the Sharks” and then started looking at stats and said “ok they got nabby, he seems good, but wait who’s this guy? He’s only played 18 games in the NHL? Wow he has almost NO experience. This is HUGE, the sharks need to get a real goaltender who knows what he’s doing to back up Nabby ASAP!”
Yeah, that’s kind of stupid. I mean, Greiss is 24 years old, has already started TWO Olympics (for Germany, but still), and has had plenty of time in the AHL learning both the North American game and how to play behind weak and strong teams alike. He’s a rookie, but he’s already had experience facing NHL-level competition in high pressure situations. Yeah, he didn’t fair too well against Canada, but he plays for Germany. That’s like throwing a good high school team against the NHL all-stars. Sorry, but it just doesn’t work.
Plus, if that doesn’t work, there’s always our lord and savior Al Stalock, who can stop pucks from going in just by intimidating them.

Their insider Hockey coverage is pretty lame overall. But I’ve found some useful tidbits in their football and baseball coverage (the other two sports I follow pretty religiously). But their billing also seems to be somewhat random. Every so often, sometimes it’ll be after a year, sometimes it’ll be after 2 1/2 years, they’ll be all “hey, pay us.” And its like 30 bucks for the year…and I get the magazine with it, which is interesting sometimes. I think I’ve paid three times over the last 8 years (or so…my memory is pretty terrible).

Yeah, ESPN’s generally the second to last place I turn for anything NHL-related, ranked only slightly above NBA.com.
Their rumor section is pretty good, as Pierre LeBrun is a beast. But outside of him, it’s tough to find anything that’s not about Crosby, Ovechkin, or Crosby v. Ovechkin.

I’m starting to think our roster is gonna stay the same and i don’t really know how i feel about that.
I like lee Stempniak of Toronto
He’s 14-15-29 through 61 games, but he’s with Toronto for chrissakes. He seemd pretty good with St. Louis, and I think he’d fit Toddymac’s system seamlessly.
Or, just bring up Couture. Eheeh!

Honestly, if Nabby were to go down, I’d probably feel more secure with Greiss taking over than Biron. Either way, a Nabby injury would eff us, and we would get bounced from the playoffs…but at least Greiss would get some playoff experience for the future. Adding in Biron would accomplish nothing.

This one makes me mad.
If he was available, what a shame Wilson didn’t find a way to get him.
Grebeshkov is potentially the next Zubov.
Makes you feel really good about a 2nd for Wallin doesn’t it?

Now you say this, I’m even more pissed.
Grebeshkov is an RFA this summer. Compare that to Wallin being UFA.
DW jumped the gun with this one.
Wilson must really, really like Wallin. Because it seems a lot of good D-men are moving this year for 2nd round picks…

Only difference is that Nashville’s pick will likely be higher than San Jose’s. Small margin though, as they’re in the playoff hunt.
For all intents and purposes Pittsburgh’s selection holds the same value.

Grebeshkov's cap hit...
is almost double that of Wallin. Remember, we’re shopping in the bargain basement section.
Include Huskins with a second and you can get Grebs under the cap. If EDM doesn’t want Husky, they put him through waivers and he comes off their cap.

I wasn't saying it couldn't be done...
Just that they likely weren’t looking for a $3M guy then.
But in your scenario—Pickles was hurt on Jan 28th. Would we really waive a starting defenseman in early February? Or even now?
I’m not saying I even want Grebeshkov over a guy like Hejda or Seidenberg or whatever— what I am saying is that DW overpayed for Niclas Wallin by giving up a second round pick for him. That tied his hands in negotiating at the deadline, when it’s now clear a 3-4 defenseman is worth a second round pick.
The only thing that makes this understandable to me is that word just came out team management wasn’t sure if Vlasic would have to go through surgery or not (and therefore free up $3.1 M when he’s placed on LTIR). If that’s the case though, why make a move for Wallin when you can use your assets (2nd rounder, cap space) to bring in someone that can have more of an impact?
Wallin is a 5-6 defenseman. He is solid in that role. But you can get more with what you gave up. Today has made that clear in my eyes.

Fair enough...

What makes up for it slightly is that Wallin had a bunch of extra practice time with the Sharks that another defenseman would not have gotten if they were traded for today. Learning the system, the tendencies of the players, and so on is invaluable, IMO.

You know my thoughts on Clowe.
Only way he’d be useful is filling a hole on the third line which should include McGinn and any other callup that’s been producing down south, and is familiar with McGinn. The dude they called up against Detroit was cute and all, but the last guy I’d want in a playoff race. Hell, I think Malholtra/McGinn/Clowe would be a nice grinder line with a little bit of urgency to score.
My biggest fear is watching our top line get shut down, again, with no backup.

Agreed. We’re going to need scoring depth if we want to do anything in the playoffs. Marleau, Heatley, and Thornton are definately going to have to find a way to score. But Pavelski will need to get his line going (and he seemed to, at least before the break, finally be getting comfortable with Seto). And we’ll need a third line too. Malhotra/McGinn/Clowe is a nice line, but who do you put with Pavs and Seto? I thought Malhotra actually worked pretty well there before he got hurt.

let me rephrase
‘anchor’, in a bad way. He slows everyone down. Clowe, like the Lord of the Rings, will only prosper if he’s in a group of mid-level skaters with soft hands, and willingness to drop the gloves. He’s an “everyman”, put in a spot where you need a pure skater/shooter.
So why is Cheechoo not in this conversation? he couldn’t skate, either. Softest hands on Earth, but if he can’t be where he needs to be on time, then his skill set is making himself the same as Clowe….. Useless.
And don’t rip me a new one, because I like Clowe.

Wants and needs for Sharks....
I’ll take Cory Stillman and Andy Sutton for 1 cup please Alex….
Think about it: scoring depth, bonified playoff experience/leadership/, cup ring; plus in Sutton we get a 6’5" rock of a D that isn’t interested in scoring, loves playing physical, and will intimidate opponents much like Rob Scuderi did last year for Pitt.
Stillman’s got $3.5M for next year too, but Sutton’s on a last year of a $3.5M, so he’s UFA come summer. Yeah it would probably cost us Clowe, Mitchell and or another Wooster boy, but it’s what we need: a Rock on D and a ‘Boyle’ like player on the wing….
my $.02…
man...
I remember Andy Sutton when he started out with the Sharks. Never woulda thought he’d even sniff making near $3M then. In any case, it’s moot since he was dealt to Ottawa for – you guessed it – a 2nd Rounder.
I like Stillman, who still manages to find a way to produce despite his age (36), but that cap hit is huge (people complain Clowe underproduces at $3.5M – Clowe has 25A to Stillman’s 25 points this season). Especially on a lineup where he’d likely be on the 3rd line, the depth of the Shuttle, those intangible qualities don’t/can’t fit in considering how pressed against the cap the Sharks are.
