Gameday: Sharks @ Canucks

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks, Mar 18, 2010 7:00 PM PDT

"A hockey player must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This team a long time have I watched. All their life they have looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never their mind on where they were. Hmm? What they were doing. Hmph. Playoffs. Heh. Stanley Cup. Heh."

It’s time for some blood in the water.

Basketball was fun today, but none of it overshadowed the importance of tonight’s game.

The real question here is:

Will Evgeni Nabokov be able to use his goalie stick as a whip and ride the bleeding Orca to the underwater world of the Stanley Cup?

2) Why don’t we ever screen the goalie like that?

another somewhat depressing night of sharks hockey

missed golden opportunities and really god-aweful defense- the kind of defense you are sorta ashamed of playing pickup no pads hockey, let alone at this level.
but this has come to be expected. and if the sharks cannot outscore their lousy defense, they lose, always.

clowe means it lately, i think he was fearing a trade.
pavs is still sweet, even if he is fighting the puck.
heater is really fighting th puck, and cant do anything right right now.
marleau- well, hopefully he’s injured. besides finishing checks, he isnt moving his feet, and is making no impact on the game.
murray seems to have his game back, and blake is skating pretty well tonight.
and couture is looking like he will be money.

for sure if it came down to Shelley vs Staubie….Staubie would be my pick to go.

Sharks had a really good 5 minute stretch in the 2nd where all five guys on the ice were hitting every guy in a blue jersey. They had speed and were actively getting open. And all four lines were putting constant pressure on the Canucks’ D. Then they turned it off. Why? If the Sharks had continued to play that way, this game for sure would’ve ended up differently.

Instead the Sharks ended the 2nd period listless. And began the 3rd period listless. Complacency is unacceptable when you’re struggling and lacking confidence.

Sharks’ continued to fail at accomplishing very fundamental tasks like initiating a proper breakout pass. After Pavs goal, the Sharks’ intensity should’ve picked up— but it never did. There was never really a sense of urgency in the Sharks’ game as the clock ran down and they pulled Nabby.

some of my observations:
- Boyle looked like his mind was somewhere else towards the end of the game. Quite a few uncharacteristic mental lapses
- I’d love to see Jumbo skate hard to the net more often. And shoot more often and instead of looking for the pass. There was one instance where he had time, open lane, and was 15 feet from Luongo and opted to pass the puck.
- Huskins surprised. He made a few goofs early on, but settled down nicely.
- Couture brought some real energy. And I’d love to see him elevated to a line with mates who can actually finish.
- Seto needs to get more active in the play. He has some wheels. He actually has the ability to create his own shot. But he needs to stop waiting for the one-timer and then fanning on it… Mason Raymond is a perfect example of someone with Seto’s speed who is constantly involved and creating.
- Everyone loves Joe Pavelski

I knew that would happen. He did not have 89 goals tonight, so obviously a bust.

You know...

If Star Wars quotes were the only thing keeping this team on the losing streak…

Just not the biggest believer in that sort of thing. And if they are bad luck, well, I’d like the Sharks to put together a solid enough game to overcome it.
