No Pain Relief Tonight
The road trip from hell continued tonight, as Sharks have dropped 4th road game in a row (and 5th straight in regulation), this time losing to the Flames in Calgary 3-4. If you have not seen the game - do not let the final score decieve you. The game was never as close as the score may indicate, and the slow sinking continues. Sure, the points matter much more to the Flames at this point of the season, and no one has forgotten the 1-9 loss in San Jose, but with Phoenix right behind the Sharks, we hoped to see anything from that would cheer our grieving souls and not put us in a profound mental anguish for the rest of the weekend.
Not tonight.
Here are few notes from the game.
- Frustrated by the lack of success, Nabokov reverted back to his old mask, which he wore for the past couple of years, as the new nippless Neptune might soon find himself on the same shelf as Nabby's Vancouver Olympics goalie mask. The question is, did Nabokov had that old mask with him on the a road trip or did he have it shipped to him? Either way, it did not help, as Nabokov allowed four goals on 24 Calgary shots.
- What used to be no. 1 penalty kill unit in the league just a week ago is now a no. 4 unit within a matter of just three games. The power play unit is not doing that much better either and went scoreless tonight.
- Dan Boyle played perhaps his worst game as a Shark. Despite scoring a goal late in the 3rd period, he still managed to record a -2 rating, and did not look sharp by any stretch of imagination. The worst play of the night came on the second Flames goal when he tried to pass the puck from his own zone, but instead threw it into the dangerous zone between the two confused Sharks where it was picked up by Hagman, who quickly passed it to Langkow who was wide open in front of Nabokov. The 28-30 minutes that Boyle is logging every night for the Sharks must be taking its toll.
- I still wonder what Brad Staubitz is doing on this roster. The only time we notice him is when he's either dropping the gloves with somebody, or, more often, when he's taking another idiotic penalty, like he did tonight in the first period. The Sharks managed to kill that penalty, but were too tired as penalty expired, which could be the reason for the second Flames goal, among other things.
- The second half of the 3rd period is not a good time to start putting the pressure on the opposing team, especially when they're already up by two goals.
- How beautiful was the play of Logan Couture tonight? While he's officially only credited with one assist tonight on a goal by Dan Boyle (but what an assist that was!), he really should have had two, as he created an opportunity for the Malhotra goal as well. His confident play tonight just may guarantee him a roster spot with the big boys for the rest of the season.
- Since Vlasic made the road trip, could we finally see him back in the line up on Sunday? This defense no doubt looks lost without him.

Agreed about Staubitz.
I do wonder as well, especially when Jed Ortmeyer is the scratch and he has enjoyed a reasonable amount of success. Plus, Orts can be used on the PK and is a more effective third/fourth liner. One last thing: I think Couture has pretty much cemented his spot on the roster with his play the past two games.

I hope so about Couture. The third line is finally looking alive with him.

Ortmeyer is hurt, from what I hear. Otherwise you’d have to assume Staubitz is the scratch. Any chance we have the cap space to bring McLaren up?

Did not realize Orts was hurt.
I hope we would. McLaren is much more productive than Staubitz. If Staubitz can stop taking stupid penalties, he would be decent. He brings good energy but ruins it when he takes a bad penalty.

Couture has been awesome.

Not much more we can say at this point, Ivano. The Sharks are stuck in quicksand. Slowly sinking. And the more they fight to get out of it, the more bad mistakes they make, that push them slowly deeper into the quicksand. If they’d just relax and make the plays they know they can make, I assume they’d get themselves out of this funk. But they’re clutching their sticks, trying to do too much on each possesion, and end up just making it worse.
Sigh…at least they can’t lose tomorrow.

Good recap Ivano. Cut right to all the relevant points.

Good recap.
My ideas:
Staubitz = waste of roster spot
We need Vlasic back ASAP before our PK is 29th…and our defense must improve with his return…
The offense and nabby’s confidence will also hopefully return :|
Sunday game vs. Edmonton should be a good time for the Sharks to come out hungry, rip of them, and feel a bit better. Go Sharks! =D
Go Sharks!
May have been a Different Game
This Game I think would have been different if they called a 5 minute penalty on the High Stick Jumbo Joe took!
Logan Couture is NHL Ready! and…. Nabby went to the OLD Mask! Happy to see that. Nabby? donate the NEW Mask to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. They could use a NEW Mask in the front area!
5 game losing streak.
This is killing me!

Where the game went wrong...
…was the second Jumbo knew there wasn’t going to be a penalty called and he didn’t go over and beat the crap out of the idiot who tried to take his eye out.
actually his next shift, he came looking for blood.
he made a bee-line straight for the guy with the puck and then stirred things up in the crease when kipper froze the puck. he was pissed.

For some reason I have a feeling Jumbo is going to be a goddamn beast this year. Sharks are going to be tied 1-1 in the series going on the road for game three in the first round, and five minutes into the second he is just going to take over. ~Plank

Logan looked awesome, and seeing him play so well in his second game where he hasn’t even had time to really practice with the team gives me hope for the future. When we get out of this rut, we’ll hopefully be heading into the playoffs with 3 really solid forward lines.
Oh and Ivano, Puck Daddy liked to your Canucks postgame article on his blog in case you hadn’t heard. It’s under the Sharks game preview here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Puck-Previews-Sharks-seek-turnaround-anger-bl?urn=nhl,229124
thank you

i’ve been thinking that way for a looooong time. wanna make a difference in a game? try scoring a goal

from his limited playing time,
mclaren seemed to have a better upside. it is hard to second guess what goes on in the front office, they certainly have 100% more exposure then we as fans have to the overall effect a player has, but man, it is frustrating to watch the product on the ice when staubitz is out there.
