3/20: Night with the Stockton Thunder!
Hello hockey fans! The San Jose Sharks are on the road and (mercifully) are out of commission today. If you're feening for the chill of the rink and the blast of the goal horn then head to Stockton Arena for tonight's contest vs the UTAH GRIZZLIES.
------------
ECHL: Premier 'AA' Hockey League

I've been going to games since witnessing their home debut, a 4-0 win against the Phoenix Roadrunners in front of a packed house of 10,000+ on December 10th, 2005. I've watched many great players come and go - and by great I mean the muckers and grinders, the dreamers, the fan favorites, the Major-Junior and college stars, the potential and the past.

I cheered when Maris Ziedins (2005-06) scored the only goal for Team Latvia in a 6-1 loss to Team Sweden in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. I smiled when Bryan Young (2006-07/2009-10) skated out onto the NHL ice in Anaheim as the first Stockton player to reach The Show. I was devastated when the Thunder were eliminated by Las Vegas last playoffs, exemplified by a heartbreaking OT loss in game 4 at the Arena. And I jumped for JOY last night when Devan Dubnyk (2006-07) finally earned his first NHL victory with a shoot-out win against the Detroit Red Wings.

This season the Thunder are in the thick of the playoff race, where every point counts. In an 8-team National Conference the cellar dweller hits the links early while the rest fight for the Kelly Cup. ONLY 6 POINTS SEPARATE THE NO.2 TEAM FROM THE NO.8 TEAM. The Thunder currently sit in the 6th spot, just one point ahead of the 7th place Grizzlies.

Yaaaay
Hopefully the boys do better tonight than last night (choked away the 2nd period – eek)
And to all, it’s perfectly acceptable to rock your Sharks sweaters. The Arena crowd oft features an olio of hockey fans, from Oceanic to Sabres.
ALSO, for the last minute folks I promise it’s easy to get tickets at the window (sans additional fees)

I loved it! I want to go to more. Slight overuse of “you suck!” but I will take it because the fans there are awesome!

Sweet
I’m glad you had fun! Where were you sitting? What did you enjoy the most? /endsurvey
I joined the CouchTarts in the Romper Room for the third period. Haha, good times.

I was in 103 (row 5). I didn’t choose where to sit , but lots of goals scored on that end, wow.
I enjoyed the atmosphere and it was so loud. At the end of the Thunder’s warmups I got a few high-fives which was sweeeet. You might have seen a tall red headed girl in a green jacket with a Sharks shoulder bag.
Some fans kept taunting a “Wilson”. I’m wondering what he did that’s so bad, haha.

I was ready to sock that kid in the nuts, but I knew better and his parent’s were right there.
He also stole the goalie’s wife at one point. What a player.

That’s still not as hot as Douglas Murray. -mymclife
I should also note, the Thunder are without their top D-pairing of Young and Bendfeld, who were sent east to Springfield. To relate, imagine the Sharks w/ a parent club that recalls Boyle and Murray w/ a couple weeks left in the season. Makes things interesting,.,.

I see Stockton won 4-3
Go Thunder!
I’m jealous they could cheer “Let’s go Thunder” without stretching a one syllable word…

Yes!
“Let’s GO Thun-DER!”
Good times in Stockton. More tomorrow.

More random thoughts
Utah’s Dylan Hunter, whom we credited w/ the game’s best facial hair, is the son of notorious NHL’r Dale Hunter., whose jersey # was retired by the Caps in 2000 (after a career in which he amassed the second-most penalty minutes in NHL history)
I was also compelled to look up info on Utah’s Vladimir ‘Little’ Nikiforov (had to be 5’7" w/ skates). His dad Aleksey played for the Russian Elite League and since retiring has been coaching the European style of play to North American players in the Long Island area. One of his students of note:…Ryan Vesce.
It’s a small hockey world.

I’m sure the Thunder marketing crew will conjure up another “Bay Area hockey night” promo in the near future. Regardless, if anyone wants to venture out to the Thunderdome feel free to contact me. There’s only a few games left in the regular season (four at home) and given their precarious position in the standings I’m not confident in suggesting playoff games just yet:
- 03/26/10 Las Vegas Wranglers
- 03/27/10 Las Vegas Wranglers
- 03/28/10 Las Vegas Wranglers
- 03/30/10 @ Bakersfield Condors
- 03/31/10 Bakersfield Condors (Pielmeier)
- 04/02/10 @ Alaska Aces
- 04/03/10 @ Alaska Ace
The Las Vegas series should be a good one. It’s the first time these two teams will meet in Stockton since last year’s playoff series, which the Wranglers won in 7. Also, our former assistant coach is now their bench boss.
