The last time San Jose Sharks visited Edmonton, they were in a somewhat similar mood. They arrived to Canada after a loss to Chicago Blackhawks at home. Yes, that loss. Sitting on my couch while eating Thanksgiving leftovers, I remember watching that game and losing hope by the minute, especially after the Oilers scored two quick goals to open the 3rd period to make to game 3-1. You may remember what happened next, as Marleau completed his hat trick with a shorthanded goal with 86 remaining in the game, and the Sharks went on to win that game in a shootout. This was a beginning of a three game winning streak.

If you're thinking that the current streak is one of the worst ones in the recent history, you just may be right - it's actually the second longest winless streak. Here is a breakdown of the longest winless streaks of the past six seasons.

Star-divide

Note: When there were more than one streak of the same length in a season (as was the case with those streaks lasting four games long), I looked at the one that happened closest to the playoffs.

Season Longest Streak Goal Differential
2003/4 4 10-12
2005/6 12 23-41
2006/7 4 10-17
2007/8 5 10-16
2008/9 4 7-14
2009/10 5 11-22

I bet we remember most of these streaks. Out brains tend to retain a larger amount of negative information. You will, of course, remember the dry November of 2005, when the team went winless in all the 12 games it played that month. That streak could be what forced Doug Wilson to make a deal with Mike O'Connel that brought Big Joe here (I still wonder who called who). You may also remember the 5 game losing streak two years ago (also all mostly on the road), right around trade deadline as Brian Campbell joined the team.

One pattern that emerged from all these losing streaks is that as they ended, the Sharks came together as a team and in almost every instance played their best hockey of the season. Back in 2003/4, the losing streak was followed by the winning streak of 5 games, with 15-7 goal differential. When Joe Thornton joined the team on December 1, 2005, the Sharks won 6 in a row, scoring an impressive 29 goals (after scoring just 23 in the previous 12). Two years ago, following a lackluster road trip that included losses to the Islanders and the Oilers, the Sharks set the new team record and won 11 in a row. Finally, this season, the Sharks were already winless for 5 in a row back in December, and once they won, they ended up winning 8 in a row.

Every losing streak eventually ends. This is still the team that only lost 18 games in regulation out of 71 this season (let that number sink in for a second). If history is of any indication, once the Sharks jump through the hurdle of that first win, they'll come out as a better team than they were before - more unified, more focused, more hungry and more determined. Is there a better time to overcome all these demons and get the team back on track than now?

Prediction: Sharks finally win. Who cares about how.

I’m going to reread this post every time we lose (assuming the streak continues… please don’t continue…)

Brain melt.

As fascinating as it is to look at stats, trends and point fingers sometimes I feel like I am thinking too much about the game. It is as if I have stopped enjoying it all together sometimes.

As fans, we can deal with back to back losses but more than 3 in a row? Seems the world is ending. We expect this team to win EVERY game. Same goes for the players. Seems they feel entitled.

Look at all the games since the break (painful yes, but important for my rant). The Sharks have gone down at least one goal first in almost every one of those games. Yet for a minute there it seemed we could win regardless of the situation. Sure lets go down 2 goals and roar back from behind 3 games in a row. I have a weird suspicion if we would have just flat out lost that Devils game 4-0 this slump would have began a lot sooner.

Instead we still had some jump in our step and almost took that game.

Look at what followed, comebacks in the next 3 games including that insane 8-5 against Nashville. We may have set ourselves up for a trend here. The boys start feeling they could come up with a W in that fashion every night and then it stopped working.

We thought we could cruise with Florida and then we got lazy. We expected to beat them and it bit us hard. Shrug it off and then its the Ducks. Of course they THINK they should beat them, team plays lazy and its an even worse loss. What came next took our confidence away from us completely. The Stars looked like they were doing a charity pick up game on some locals at the practice rink but instead of fixing the game for a close one, they decided to show off and run the kids around the rink and make them question if they should be playing baseball instead.

Point is, when you are having an emergency practice to go over basics with less than 15 games left in the season and everyone from the coaching staff to your assistant captains are throwing different anecdotes around, you bet they have lost their focus.

Some players are playing overly emotional, and some are wishing they could get a therapy session in with the team shrink. The team is second guessing every play, missing assignments and passes, and slow to the races in near every situation.

The confidence level is the only thing that I feel will snap this team out of it. We all know they are capable of, THEY just need to feel it again.

Forget slumps, stats, streaks and any other way of looking at it. A confident and happy hockey team can win every night. I think they are realizing that and the harmony is returning.

Let’s just play some fucking hockey. For us fans out there, lets try and find some positive into these next few games.

It will make us ALL feel better.

Go Sharks.

I wish Nabokov had a little more Ivan Drago to him sometimes. For a Russian, Nabby is pretty damn quiet. He’s conceded, as I would expect, but I want more “I BREAK YOU” out of John.

interesting mis-spell...

very appropriate i think.

“Conceded” should be “conceited”

but often, i wonder if Nabby just concedes his game when his sees his team doing nothing.

Steroids + Copious amount of alcohol...

Terrible combination. You know that saying “drink until your eyes cross”? Well, I thought since my eyes were crossed already, it couldn’t get much worse. Problem is… it did.

I also drank too many cups of coffee this morning, which made me feel even worse.

Point being, if the Sharks end up playing like they did the last few weeks tonight, I will literally vomit; something I have managed to avoid up to this point.

And this is exactly why I haven’t been freaking out over the last few weeks. Of course it has been frustrating to watch. But as the evidence shows, we have one of these streaks once a year. The fact that it has happened so late in the year may say something else about this team.

This team’s sloppy play started over a month ago. And it was a wonder to me how we still found ways to win games. One play here, one play there, we would win games that we were getting dominated in. We have unworldly explosive capabilities. And once we bounce out of this streak of poor play, we will be heading into the playoffs. You almost couldn’t script it better.

Another positive note…if we can figure out how to play better defense without Vlasic, we may be that much better off when he comes back. Of course Murray will have to get his mojo back, because he hasn’t been quite the same since he came back from injury.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Mar 21, 2010 11:48 AM PDT reply actions

And another thing. Whenever this team has had rough patches over the last few years, in the regular season and in the playoffs, the one guy that always seems to elevate his game and backpack our team is Clowe. For all the talk about trades a little while back, and admittedly I was among one of the proponents, we should never trade Clowe. I don’t care about contracts, and blah blah blah.

For all those pretty skill forwards, Clowe is one that will get in your face, deliver a slightly dirty hit, punch you in the face, talk shit, then come out of the box and score on you. We need more guys like him.

We just traded who for who?!

love and hate clowe

he really came out unmotivated for the first 2/3’s of the season, and really disappointed after i think a career year last season. looks like he is elevating his game in anticipation of the playoffs; hopefully his olympian teammates are soon to follow.

Well, that certainly makes things interesting. What do the pairs shake out to?

Boyle-Murray (you know the deal)
Vlasic-Wallin (shutdownshutdown)
Blake-Huskins/Leach? (reduced minutes for Captain Hook, increased PP time?)

by innes on Mar 21, 2010 12:19 PM PDT via mobile reply actions   1 recs

Gotta say, I think the Wallin move was made almost purely to reduce Blake’s minutes. I would not be surprised to see Wallin matched up with Vlasic.

I really like that top 7. Not opposed to rolling the third and fourth lines w/o Staubitz if the defense functions better with Leach around.

captain hook! hahahahaha

blake-huskins for sure. huskins is WAY better with the puck than leach is. leach plays the body well and all, but for as many struggles as the sharks have making breakouts, leach looks really nervous with the puck.

i disagree, huskins has no real redeeming qualities, he is terrible on d, he cant hold the offensive zone, he is the weakest link on our team, i can only hope this offseason dw trades him for a bag of pucks

I agree with the both of you. Leach and Huskins both make a ton of mistakes and I really would prefer the AHL (Demers, Joslin, Moore, Petrecki) over them

by kiwi93 on Mar 21, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

and this is what seperates us

from the coaches. we see a bad play or 2, or a great goal by a defensemen. they see the body of work and the impact a player has on a room, bench etc.

no one will argue that huskins isnt a 3rd pair d-man at best, but given the choice between husky and leacher…

edmonton might be just the bait this team needs.

should be a winnable game, as edmonton isnt fighting for a playoff spot, but still has some momentum and confidence after the ot win over detritus the other night.

hopefully the boys get their passing and movement down, and gain some confidence in the simple aspect of their game.

I took a look at the Conference standings earlier this afternoon. I wish it were final.

1. Chicago vs 8. Detroit
2. San Jose vs 7. Colorado
3. Vancouver vs 6. Nashville
4. Phoenix vs 5. Los Angeles

That’s ace.

Interesting outlook about tonight’s game from Copperblue.

The Sharks may be sucking these days, but they’ll face the ultimate barometer of suck in the Oilers. In their last 16 games the Oilers have “won” 4, but 3 of those came in the shootout. 35 of the last 39 Oiler opponents have skated off with at least one point; 32 of those with two points. That’s 32-4-3, .859 for those scoring at home.
