Ryane Clowe beginning to flourish as Sharks flounder
With the Sharks on the heels of one of the worst regulation losing streaks since 1997, Ryane Clowe has managed to establish himself as a one of the few bright spots San Jose has to offer.
Which isn't saying much. But at this point, we'll take what we can get.
Labeled by this author as a prime trade target for a San Jose Sharks deadline deal that never occurred, Ryane Clowe has managed to establish himself as one of the better players over the course of this post-Olympic drought that the Sharks have managed to slip into. And although the jury is still out on whether or not he can continue to produce at a sufficient level throughout the final days of the regular season considering his history of being a notoriously streaky player, he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down.
A defining moment came in the second period against Vancouver, when Clowe took a Joe Pavelski outlet pass and blew past former-Shark Christian Ehrhoff "as if it was a pick up game somewhere in Frankfurt" according to Fear The Fin author Ivan Makarov. It was a power move that the fanbase hadn't seen since the glory days of future Hall of Famer Steve Bernier*, and one that they had been waiting for Clowe to exhibit during the better part of this year.
*Credentials pending.
Clowe has been excellent on the low cycle lately, and admittedly has been for awhile now, using his 6'2 225 pound frame to protect the puck and generate a consistent flow to the Sharks offensive zone control. It has helped to stop the bleeding of a team that has had an issue with turnovers, while also lending a hand to generating some scoring opportunities as the main well has dried up.
Clowe has also outproduced his pre-Olympic pace in these last ten games. Here is how the top seven forwards (in terms of historic ice time amongst the top six) have performed in relation to their previous output:
Along with improving on his pre-Olympic totals, Clowe has managed to notch a point in seven out of ten games since the Olympics, tied for first with Joe Thornton amongst these forwards.
Now is this the case of mining a small data sample pretty extensively to prove a mostly qualitative point?
Of course.
But for all the mud that has been flung towards Clowe this season, and I'm just as guilty as anybody, I think a little credit is in order. He's been one of the most consistent Sharks on a team plagued with inconsistency these last few games, and has shown a return to the form he exhibited against the Calgary Flames during the 2008 playoffs.
San Jose needs all hands on deck going into this crucial ten game stretch run to take back the division title. Clowe has tried to prove there still may be a little gas left in the tank. All it takes is getting those big engines going again.
And like I said, at this point, we might as well take any bright spots we can get.
Go Sharks.

Freaking awesome!
Wow…there does come a day where my boy gets a shout-out and of the trade him sort. :) I sure hope too he’ll keep grinding the way he has been and does not falter. If he does, I’ll have to once again eat my words and listen to sell him trade him get rid of him do whatever you want as long as his overpaid butt is off our roster. GO SHARKS! But moreso GO CLOWE!

Not to be a negative nancy in this desperate attempt at positivity…(lols) but I’d still trade his 3 goals 5 assists in 10 games for 3.5 million worth of quality defensemen, especially at this point where all of our old defensive fears have actually come light.
jeez nancy
kidding because its a good point. Add Blakes contract and get a couple of playas!
yes, yes we are idiots and stupid heads for talking about player moves past the deadline.

Clowe is finally playing up to expectations, if not his lofty contract. Hopefully the team follows suit, and soon.
I don’t think there’s ever been a question as to whether or not Clowe is good at hockey. The question, of course, is always about if he’s as good at hockey as his contract indicates he should be. Even with this recent hot streak, I have my doubts. But being as he’s one of 2 or 3 people on this team actually pulling their weight right now, beggars can’t be choosers.

I only wonder, why hasn’t he played like this all along?

Clowe is trying
Clowe is out there every game, some of the others (JT) seem to be going through the motions. The coach should bench Nabby and maybe Thornton too. Can they still get Demurs from the AHL and they have a goaltender there too?
Time to shake things up and see who really wants to play and who already has their tee times.
I have a tee time for Wednesday! But that’s a little different, I guess…

I guess I should soften my stance a little
Clowe has admittedly been one of the better players during the slide. But, I still think that for a player that brings virtually nothing defensively, he has to score more than .75 points per game to be an asset in the top 6.
+/- is not the greatest stat, but I do feel that it is not too bad when comparing players within a team, especially when line combinations have been quite fluid as they are now. For the last 10 games, only one player on the team is worse than Clowe’s -6, and that is… wow, Pavelski at a -8 (that was a surprise). Murray clocks in at a -5, HTML is at -4 each.
The guy has been scoring, true. But he has been awful in the defensive end. Plank said this at the beginning of the year, Clowe is a PP specialist who needs to step up his 5v5 play. He hasn’t and thus should be on the 3rd line. If he is put there, he becomes an asset. Might as well see if Couture can fill that top 6 role instead.
Oh yeah, and for the advanced stat lovers out there
On the year, Clowe has the worst rating (+/- relative to team) on the team besides Nichol, McGinn and Murray (who has went from underrated to overrated in just one season). His QUALTEAM is better than his QUALCOMP, yet he only puts up average numbers for a second liner.
When he plays on the third line + PP, his skillset becomes more valuable. He can hold the puck on the boards against lesser competition, his defensive miscues don’t end up in the net as often against other 3rd liners or on the PP, and he is freed to become the offensive playmaker that he truly wants to be (because the Nichols and Ortmeyers of the world aren’t gonna do it, and he is the one person on the 2nd PP unit who actually seems to want to do something other than dump or shoot).
You’re preaching to the choir, really— I want Clowe on the third line, think he’s pretty useless defensively, and advocated for him to be traded for a defenseman all season long. But at this point I’m looking for any positive I can get, and Clowe has been one of those positives during this stretch where the team as a whole has looked atrocious.
"San Jose is where I want to be at the end of the day, and there's an opportunity now to make it there. It is where my heart is." - Jamie McGinn, 2/22/10
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Ahh, I see
I guess it would be more accurate to say that Clowe has been one of the only offensive bright spots lately, because defensively he has been even worse than he has been all season (though that may have something to do with Pavelski’s recent D slump).
How about something on Torrey Mitchell’s resurgence? He has actually been a plus player during the streak despite only bagging two assists. I’ve noticed that he is by far the most aggressive player on the PK, I wonder if that is a sound strategy (maybe throws off the PP after seeing a more conservative approach by Nichol and Malhotra?).
But...
was Clowie ever really good at D? Honestly? The only D he was ever good at was with his fist…He really does need to work on his D though..

what the bleep?
the only shark worth an atta boy as of late is pavelski. this team makes me sick. every year right as april approaches. barf
Well, he has been a team worst -8 over the past 10 games
He hasn’t exactly been himself either.
Really, I think the only players doing their job are Torrey Mitchell, Logan Couture, Kent Huskins, and maybe Nic Wallin. McGinn has done okay in limited time, but probably should be producing more as well. Blake, despite many of our protestations, hasn’t been on the ice for that many goals during this streak, but I swear he is on the ice for every other chance (but that just may be my personal bias).
Perhaps you should try some pepto bismo?

Not every year.
Two years ago they were the hottest team in the league, and the years before that they were AT LEAST decent.
