The Storm Finally Clears - Sharks Snap Their 5-game Losing Streak
The losing streak is over. Tonight Sharks Territory is breathing a long awaited sign of relief.
This long streak of losses was like winter storms in Northern California. We don't remember about the rain for most of the year, but when winter comes and it rains for longer than an hour, Bay Area turns into chaos - streets get flooded, I-17 gets shut down, car accidents are seen on every street corner and overall feeling of panic on the road prevails. When it rains for more than a day, the weather dominates the news and no one can think about anything else. But then the storm clears, and life goes back to normal sunny weather that lasts months.
Here in San Jose the fans have been spoiled during the past regular seasons since the lockout, as the Sharks kept racking up 50+ victories seasons one after another. During the regular season the wins are taking for granted, and "regular season win don't matter" cliche is heard again and again. But once the Sharks trip few times in a row, all of a sudden, regular season starts to matter again, and every game becomes "a preview of playoffs" to these same fans.
This has been a very stressful week here at Fear the Fin. We've written numerous articles and had even longer debates in comments on what is wrong with Nabokov, the team, coaches, other players, overall mood of this team and even some of the posters on this blog.
What we expected from the team finally came to fruition tonight, as the Sharks beat the Wild 4-1. Here is how it happened:
- Nabokov finally played like he played before the Olympics, staying sharp all night long, and allowing just one goal on 19 shots on goal.
- Defense finally looked like they were talking the same language. When one defenseman stayed behind, another d-man or a forward covered his back.
- Penalty kill unit finally killed penalties. The Wild scored their only goal on a PP, but other than that, PK units were successful.
- No idiotic penalties from Brad Staubitz. 2:01 of playing time may have something to do with it.
- Joe Pavelski scored another beauty of a goal to open the scoring in this game. When is he going to stop and score an ugly goal for a change? When Sharks scored the first goal of the game, we knew the story may finally have a happy ending.
- The Big Three from the former HTML line have all worked hard in the corners, back checked, and blocked shots. All three got on the scoreboard as well, with goals from Heatley and Thornton and an assist for Marleau. Joe Thornton's even strength time was still limited to just 11:29 (which is lower than Couture's or Mitchell's even strength time, for comparison), but when Thornton was out there, he chased every puck.
- McLellan's line shuffling might have finally worked. As Versus commentators noted, McLellan put all Big Three players on the lines with hard working blue color players. Who knows if this is the approach McLellan will take going forward, but I finally saw a purpose for this crazy mix and match.
- Rob Blake was the best player on the ice tonight, finishing the night with 3 assists and a +3 rating. Tonight he led by example.

Norcal weather...
what a great analogy. If there are clouds in the sky, half the people in the bay area forget how to drive…
And all is well with the world.
The storm has cleared. Nice post, thanks.
And what’s the advice (Murray’s grandfather, Lars [Lasse] Bjorn) gives him?
"Hit more people."
GOD BLESS AMERICA
Slight correction Ivano— Jumbo saw 13:36 at evens tonight, higher than Mitchell’s ice time in that situation. Nice to see Torrey get on the board coincidentally.
I thought Nabby did a good job of keeping the team in the game during the first period— the Wild were swarming during the last ten minutes of that frame, and if he doesn’t hold the fort, who knows what happens.
Great to finally see the boys pick up a win. Go Sharks.

It felt like losing my virginity again. Now, time to booze up for Lost. The potential for a Richard Alpert episode might be as mind blowing as seeing a game where Brad Staubitz stays out of the box.

Ha – have fun watching Lost while I finally go feed mu kids some dinner. FTF over kids – I hope I don’t get arrested.
I think Joe looked a little pissed about his PT. No emotion whatsoever on that empty net goal. He even looked pissed during post game interview.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
He also saw the third highest SH TOI amongst forwards. Honestly, I dig it. Make him earn it a bit.
Angry Joe means nothing but good things. Give him another period and a half or so of decreased ice time with some pluggers and he might go bonkers.
Insert him alongside Heater and watch him explode.

Good analogy with the weather (and 17)
One small thing -
With Blackhawks prevailing over Coyotes in Chicago tonight, the Sharks take back the control of the Pacific Division and of the Western Conference.
We’re 2nd place in the West – but now I’m thinking you mean control in the more general sense. Either way – WOOOOOO.

Defense
Our blue line has been taking a lot of heat lately, from everyone really. And it was certainly deserved, they were continually making poor mistakes, not picking up assignments and giving up a lot of goals. But I have to say we looked good tonight, Murray was all over anyone with the puck, Boyle did his thing, Blake was phenomenal, Vlasic is graciously welcomed back and already contributing, Wallin had a crucial block on a pretty wide open net and even Huskins looked decent. Tonight was a complete team effort, our team looked faster than ever getting to the puck, and the fact that Nabby only saw 19 shots on goal says wonders about the effort on D tonight. If they keep this unity up during the rest of the season, I will be really encouraged going into the playoffs.
"Until it's over, I'm not going to tell you it's over." - Nabby
big key
boyle was pretty conservative tonight. we’ll probably see a lot more of this from her eon out. it is really beneficial for the other d-men and forwards to play a simple game, and not be on their heels constantly. as much as i love watching boyle tear through the neutral zone and lead the rush, it doesnt really help the sharks where they need help the most- on d.
this team is better with boyle being a quarterback- emphasis on the BACK.

Orty and Vlasic
back in the lineup definitely helped the chemistry of the team tonight. And I was definitely impressed with the line-shuffling as well. I would like to see Marleau stick on the second line more with Pavelski and Malhotra. However, I don’t necessarily know if the Seto-Heater-Joe line is good enough for the long haul. I think that while Joe and Seto have great chemistry, Heatley kind of sticks out like a sore thumb, or a pointless add-on. He’s definitely not being used to his ability on that line. I can see that McLellan wants to have his best-assister (Joe) on the same line as his two fastest/slickhanded forwards, but something about it just isn’t clicking.
joe
needs a second forward who moves smartly to help draw defenders. marleau and heatley both do that really well, but seto just isnt that guy. for whatever reason, call it the cheechoo effect, he rarely finds himself drawing coverage because he doesnt get to the dirty areas.

I could not agree more. I like Ort, and Staubitz needs a mustache and a rat tail. His limited role playing as a thug is just not necessary and outdated. Ort brings hustle and effort during the actual play, mistakes or not, that is good for the team.

when I go check out their practices and they end with a skills competition, Staubitz seems to have some really good shots… I just don’t know where they are in actual games. However if its a choice between Ortmeyer and Staubitz, I choose Ort every time.

feels so good inside.
when that first goal went in you could see the jump in their step- they knew some critical barrier had been passed.
there were still mistakes, and against a better team those errors would probably have ben more costly.
there is the bad tendency for the top players… ok Joe thornton, patty, and heater… to stop moving their feet on defense; maybe they expect to be able to poke check because of their god-like skill, or maybe they are just supreme jackasses and want to piss me off, but the result is too often a bad turnover, long zone time, and really being dominated in the defensive end.
the power play is still lagging, but that is to be expected. this team-wide-schnide is going to take a while to work out of, and until the work and the execution is consistent, the power play will continue to be lackluster.
so many positives from this game, torrey continued to play his game, and was rewarded. couture is this close. heatley broke through in true cloweian style, with a real TAKE IT kind of goal. and nabby, while looking a little shaky at first really started to gain some momentum.
still not convinced about this team, they have a lot of problems to work through, but at least sharks hockey is fun to watch again!

Ahhhhh! Finally!
Winning never felt so good! This team worked hard tonight, played a simple game for once, and fought out a win.
Now they just have to repeat it!
I loved the Marleau-Pavelski-Malhotra line. That should be our top line. Thornton looked better. He’ll be back beside Heatley soon enough. Hopefully he keeps up the hard work once he’s back with Heater. I’d even say keep Clowe with Thornton and Heatley on a second line. Ortmeyer had a great night, IMO. He had energy, he had jump, he created some chances. I want him in the lineup every night from here on out.
All in all, nice win. Let’s hope they build on it!

Haven't been able to watch the Sharks for a few games now
(I guess I’m glad finals and my first few days home for spring break made me miss most of a terrible winless streak. I believe I read somewhere that 6 games without a win hasn’t happened since before Marleau was a rookie.)
Anyway, good win tonight. Was this Vlasic’s first game back? If so, it’s IMO no small coincidence that Blake suddenly looked a lot better.
Finally
It was good to see the team play with a chip on their shoulder..Is was nice to have a Joe Thornton sighting
tonight. if Blake and the D can play like that in the
playoffs, we have got something. Please tell me that
Blake has been coasting at his age these first 70
games and now he is turning that old slow body on
for the push.
Having Pickle back just gets all the other defensemen
playing where they should be. Coach spend these
last few games getting those playoff line solidified
and lets try to go in with some good mojo.
GO SHARKS
Hoping for Detroit in 1st round!
I’m seeing a lot of people speculating that they’d like to avoid Detroit in the first round. This bothers me.
I want to know if this team is for real or not – the last few weeks (tonight’s game notwithstanding) have really caused me to question this. I want us to face Detroit in the 1st round. I think it would be the best possible seeding.
We’re a better team than Detroit… on paper at least, for whatever that might be worth. If we are so afraid of Detroit as a first round series matchup that we desperately hope to avoid them, then I wouldn’t want to waste my money on tickets just to lose to Detroit in the 2nd round anyway. And if we DO beat Detroit in the 1st round, we should have the confidence to go all the way.
I say bring ‘em on. Let’s get them out of the way early and push on with some serious hope of bringing the Cup to San Jose this year.

Well said SharksPhan!!
Detriot’s only 4 hours away…I’ll throw on one of my 7 Sharks Jerseys and cheer for the Boys in Teal at Joe Louis Arena!
I agree whole heartedly.
Only team I would like to see them beat more in a 1st round matchup is Anaheim. But eliminating Detroit after their big late season push, mmmmm tastes goood.

Not I
There are plenty of tough teams to face in the playoffs. I don’t necessarily agree that we have the best team on paper (Zetterberg, Franzen, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski…) Their guys have been there and done that, they know how to step it up in the playoffs. I’d like to get our guys at least a series to get into playoff mode before we run face first into the 2 time Western Conference Champions.
I like your spirit, I just don’t think we should be hoping for Detroit in round 1.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I guess I have a different outlook
I like the idea of playing the beast right away. heaven forbid an early exit but…
any hockey fan that has a bit of perspective knows that the seeds can be irrelevant if you run into a hot team/goalie/or team full of seasoned players used to making big runs.
a loss to Detroit or Anaheim in any round is hard to swallow but there is no real shame in it.
Larry Zoolander: I just thank the Lord she didn't live to see her son as a mermaid.

Fatigue is a factor. If that series goes 7 games and we win we’re already in a hole. You want to get through the first few series with as few games as possible. History shows that the more games you play the less likely you are to make it all the way in the playoffs. It’s kind of rare to actually beat all of the best teams on your way to a championship, that’s why the seedings exist as they are.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
sure in an ideal scenario games are all entertaining, injury free and your opponents are beating the hell out of each other along the way.
I just figure the odds of any team winning it all are slim. I want the Sharks to win now and in the future and it would be huge, in an ideal world, to battle through so many of the things that have haunted this group. A win over someone like detroit on the way to a deep run would probably carry on into next year and beyond.

I think a SC win would be the best thing for us going forward, but that’s must me.
Look at Detroit the last two years.
They steamroll Columbus while we get stuck with the Ducks. Make it all the way to the finals (I think that Ducks series cost them a repeat personally). It was the Penguins who had a cake walk in the 3rd round against a worn and weary Carolina team who were nice and rested for the finals.
The year before I think they got the Wild in round 1 and an injury depleted Colorado in round 2 and then an exhausted Stars team in round 3 before going on to take on the Penguins. Hardly the hardest road to a cup, but nobody doubted them.
The good teams win, but usually they down plow the hardest road to victory.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Good points all around. You don’t have to beat EVERY SINGLE ELITE TEAM to be considered a worthy champion. The SC playoffs are such a grind, that anyone who makes it out alive definately deserves the reward, no matter who you beat. There’s definately luck involved in who you draw and such…it would be nice if the Sharks got some luck every now and then…

I don’t remember which one it was, but the Dudes on Hockey podcast covered this at some point, probably before the playoffs last year. They at least showed that no team that went to 7 in the first series had won lately. The first series usually averaged just above 5 games.

So there it is. You could have 7 game series as long as Hypercolor shirts were sold, but then no more.
Sorry, I’m selfish. If we face Detroit, I want it to be in the WCF. That way, we’ve already broken out of the first and second rounds. And that should give us some momentum and loads of confidence heading into a series against Detroit. Also, if we lose in the WCF, at least people will have a harder time trying to say the Sharks choked again. Asking for Detroit in the first round is asking for trouble.

I wager that Greg Jamison and DW have a giant stack of paper from seasons past lauding how San Jose was a better team than most. It’s not worth even one order of garlic fries at the concessions.
I will say that if there is a year that I would prefer facing Detroit though, it might as well be this year. The Toll of Games Played (due to their streak of extended playoff runs), Injuries, and Relative Weakness in Goal add up to a seemingly vulnerable Red Wings club. But considering their pedigree, lineup of playoff-tested veterans, a lineup coming together after a horrendous first half vs. the recent woes the Sharks have faced, I’m not so sure I’d want to go up against that now. Let them be someone else’s problem.
Let’s just say I’m still rooting for Calgary to boot them back to 9th.

My 2 favs with that win last night was
1. Nabby was better
2. Torry played like the old torry
I just gotta say
I was really impressed with Marleau’s effort last night. He was pressuring in every situation, stretching himself out and really going the extra mile I thought. It was awesome to see that, since it’s what I (as a recently-acquired fan) am used to seeing him do!
As long as the sharks return to form like they did against the wild for the playoffs, i have no problem with the last 5 games. Reason? The red wings are playing great hockey right now and if theyre going to be the 8 seed, i’d much rather have them be the blackhawks problem

I liked what I saw last night right outta the gate. There’s still some work to be done, but my god what a difference a day makes!
That being said though, IMHO Nabby is still not quite…Nabby. Stayed deep in his crease, and gave up alot pretty juicy rebounds. Very un-Nabbylike. But I trust that things will get better from here. Get on a hot streak boys and ride that puppy straight into the Playoffs!!
