Sharks trump Avalanche 4-3, win fourth straight

Devin Setoguchi scored his first goal in six games, and added another, to extend the Sharks winning streak to four despite playing without Iron Man Joe Thornton.

It was a good win for a team that needed some success after disheartening performances following the Olympic Break, and coupled with the 3-2 victory over Vancouver on Saturday night, San Jose managed to knock off two Western Conference playoff teams in the process. Passes have been crisper, skating more defined, and previously underperforming players such as Torrey Mitchell and Ryane Clowe have managed to elevate their game when the team has needed them the most.

Things are looking to be returning to normal here in San Jose.

  • Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe wore the A's tonight as Rob Blake and Joe Thornton were out with various ailments. Surprising to see Pavelski not get the nod here, but with Clowe's resurgence of late, it's probably fitting he gets a pat on the back and a letter on his sweater.
  • The Colorado forwards gave San Jose a lot of trouble throughout the game, and that's something to look for down the stretch. It was a win, but far from a perfect outing. During the first two games of this current winning streak San Jose gave up 46 shots-- this weekend, they gave up 82.
  • Thomas Greiss may have given up some big rebounds during the first two frames but was excellent throughout the course of the game, making 42 stops in the win. In the third period he was nothing short of a thick blanket, deadening slap shots from all angles and forcing faceoffs in the defensive zone. I wonder why he hasn't played more this season.
  • Although Staubitz headed to the box for what seems like the 15th straight game, that was one i don't mind him taking. Kent Huskins got caught up in a footrace to the puck behind Greiss and fell awkwardly into the boards. With Thornton going down in a quasi-similar manner yesterday, it sent a message that the Sharks wouldn't be taken advantage of.
  • Speaking of the penalty parade, San Jose ran into trouble when both Jamie McGinn and Jed Ortmeyer headed to the box for a 5 on 3 during the second period. That's probably doing nothing to help get them out of McLellan's doghouse. Might as well take out a mortgage right now.
  • Dan Boyle saw 25 minutes plus again. A workhorse in every sense of the word. I would like to see McLellan manage his ice time a little more down the stretch here, as Boyle has seemed to lack that skating spark he is known for since returning from the Olympics, but I understand how hard it must be to not call his number when he's on the bench.
  • More on Demers tomorrow, but it was nice to see him step in and log 16:54 at evens. McLellan had him paired up with Vlasic for what seemed like the majority of the game, which is a nice idea considering Vlasic's excellent defensive play. We will have to wait and see if that is the route the team takes when Blake returns.
  • Matt Duchene opened up the defense with a nice move to the net on the Avs second goal, and followed that up with an even better feed to find Mueller in the slot who ripped it short side to put the Avalanche up 2-1. Tyler Myers likely deserves the Calder, but Duchene is a player who is going to be terrorizing the Sharks for years to come. Great player, was buzzing around the puck all night.
  • Logan Couture continued his trend of banging in some ugly goals by driving hard to the net (Ed. Note: Ortmeyer eventually was credited with the goal). It's a story that has been rehashed ad nauseum on Fear The Fin by now, but he truly has been a breathe of fresh air since being recalled from Worcester two weeks ago.

Go Sharks.

I think they ended up giving that goal to Ortz, but Couture certainly did more to score there. Good to see Couture proving he belongs here.

Agree with you on Duchene – the guy has golden hands. Every time I see someone blossom like him or like Stamkos, I keep wondering how Maple Leafs fans feel as they waste away the opportunity to rebuild by missing playoffs and lottery picks altogether just about every year. And then there was Phil Kessel trade..

Sharks are picking up their pace. Just like I predicted before the Oilers game, when the streak will be over, we just may see the Sharks play their best hockey all season. The fact that they allowed so many shots on goal tonight still makes me concerned a bit, but on the night the Oilers game ended, who knew we’d be looking at a perfect week of wins in the next week?

Greisser was a beast tonight. I was really, really impressed by him. He should be playing more (beating a dead horse).

Despite the penalty, I actually thought Ortmeyer was really buzzing around well tonight. I don’t want to see him or McGinn as a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

Couture was a beast. Too bad the goal wasn’t his in the end. Wouldda been a nice way to ring in his 21st bday! I’m sure the boys will take him out drinking tonight (not that it was an issue for him before, I’m sure).

All in all, a win is a win. It was an ugly win, but I’ll take it!

I was also at the game. Two thoughts:

1) If only Heater had managed to bury that shot after passing to himself through the legs of the Avs player.
2) Manny played with a broken nose tonight. What a total savage.

With no visor!! He was diving for the puck all over the place. Savage indeed.

A couple of games ago Randy mentioned that Manny-Marleau-Pavs looked good together, when Drew said “who hasn’t Manny looked good out there with?” After thinking about it, I couldn’t think of anyone.

He’s, hands down, the best free agent that wasn’t in a Sharks uniform that DW has signed.

And somehow he managed to get him at a home town discount. He can’t even get our players to sign for a hometown discount.

Maybe there is a bit of ‘nod, nod, wink, wink’ going on for the future, but 750k for Manny is better bang for the buck than we’re getting out of draftees at this point.

anyone seen him play more than a game or two?

It’s probably just rust but he looks reeeally slow post to post. I notice that every time I see him but those opportunities are few and far between.

I can’t help but think Boucher sure would be nice to have around…but i want to be fair so…any feedback on Greiss?

Hansel: "Who are you tryin' to get crazy with, ese? Don't you know I'm loco? "

by Aero72 on Mar 29, 2010 7:53 AM PDT reply actions

I respectfully disagree. Greiss stood on his head for much of the game last night, against a determined Avs squad that was peppering him with shots, many of them quality scoring chances. The 3rd period in particular saw him make some ridiculous saves, and I give him full credit for us eeking out that 4-3 victory.

by OtherKid on Mar 29, 2010 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Greisser had some sick ass moves last night from right to left and from down to up. He was way more reactive than Nabby which I like but he still plays scary as heck…I think with more game starts he’ll be OK. He still has issues with multiple shots taken at him but all in due time he’ll get better.

Agree with Cam

Greiss was a monster in the net last night – if he continues to play this well, we’ll have less to fear in the post-season, should the schedule get a little screwy (didn’t they have back-to-backs last season, unlike most seasons prior?).

hmmm

yes I guess so…but from being in the down position Greiss might as well launch himself through the rafters at the rate he pops up..its insane. Though he does need to work on not getting down so early…making his outrageous moves, that is so near and dear to my black armor heart, unnecessary.

I actually thought Greiss went post to post pretty quickly last night. There were a few times when he actually got over to make a save that I thought for sure was headed into the back of the net. His reflexes are insane.

True

Last night was fine – but in other games this season I’ve felt he hasn’t been able to cover both corners of his crease with the same ease that Nabokov often exhibits.

But this is nitpicking, and I don’t honestly have specifics to back this up. So, “fail” to me ;-)

If the rest of you haven’t seen the NHL.com highlights for this game, the Colorado commentators are a riot! Every time Greiss made a save it sounded like one of them was going to have an aneurysm!

Setoguchi’s second goal:

“He was looking down at the puck, coming towards his foot. He knew what he was doing”

The colour guy was trying to say the goal should have been disallowed because Seto knew what he was doing with his legs. The other guy then reminded him that there was no distinct kicking motion.

Also, what was with the ref announcing that not only was the goal good, but he specifically called it:
