The Pursuit for a Defenseman Reignited

Does San Jose make a deal? I really have no idea. It's hard to read Doug Wilson and I'm not about to start today.

Frankly, the trade deadline gives me a headache. I enjoy all the speculation and everything, but at some point I just want to watch the team that is going to take the ice during the 2010 playoffs. Finally focus on hockey and leave all the other stuff on the backburner.

For better or worse, that starts today.

Go Sharks.

Ah man, I feel like something has to be done with Clowe. Keeping Clowe on the team would just make me feel like we had extra cap space that we didn’t put to use.

Huskins should definitely be what goes the other way with whatever else we would need to give up.

Ridiculous Sharks rumors over at Blueshirt Banter...

Saying the Sharks are in serious discussions to trade Seto or Pavs to the Rangers. For Dubinsky.

Just heard Darren Dreger throw San Jose into the Dan Hamhuis speculation mix

(after discussing David Poile backing off making the trade with the Flyers) “There are some who think, of a connection perhaps in some way, shape, or form, with the San Jose Sharks.”
This comment is pretty ambiguous, but it is interesting considering the proposed 3-way trade for Coburn that was posted yesterday…

They also go on to mention how SJ has good young players in McGinn, Ferriero, McLaren and Couture in the system but haven’t solidified a spot for cap space reasons

Scott Nichol re: his US-born son: He was all about Canada. He’s only six so I can manipulate him pretty good.
Puck Daddy: You would definitely hate the Ducks more than you'd hate the Kings, right?
Joe Pavelski: Yeah, definitely.

I don’t have much, if any, confidence that we’ll make any moves. I’d like to think DW is aware of the gaping holes on defense, but the players that it would hurt most to trade yet would net the greatest player in return, i.e. our superstar players, are too valuable in terms of making a run for the Cup. The more fringe players that it would make sense to trade, like Clowe, I feel haven’t performed this season to the degree where teams would be willing to take them off our hands for anywhere near a premiere shutdown d-man.

I guess one last possibility is that the other GMs have wised up to the fact that DW has essentially committed highway robbery with his past trades, and are now more wary of any packages he brings to the table.

by OtherKid on Mar 3, 2010 9:08 AM PST reply actions

I thought the same thing the last couple of years as well, and yet here was DW still moving players.

Although with Heatley splash last summer, and acquiring Walin, I think it’s likely that we’re done.

DW will not pass up any reasonable opportunity to make this team better.

I go back to the first post. Clowe is wildly inconsistent to get that type if money and be playing third line mins.

Clowe + Staubitz/Huskins for Kaberle. I can’t think Burke doesn’t like Clowe. He loves those hard nosed physical guys.

I’d also give up an exchange of picks too if the cap fit. Like giving up a 1st for a 2nd and Clowe. Or some combo.

Some pure speculation on my part

One of the interesting aspects of the Wallin deal for me, was that it was done before the Olympic Break, and allowed for the “mini-camp” to be held back here in San Jose.

I wonder if that makes Doug Wilson LESS likely to make a deal now, because he wanted anyone he acquired to be given a chance to aclimate to the team during the break.

On the one hand, yes, new face does get more time to get meshed in, but on the other, you miss out on other teams getting desperate, like Florida deciding to have a fire sale.

Anyway, food for though.

Nichol was an average signing in terms of production. I like him, good player, good asset on the fourth line. But he’s a fourth line center, produces as such, and is paid as such.

On FAs coming to San Jose

In the pre-cap world, San Jose could never compete with the elite clubs in terms of contracts offered.

And with the pressure to win now, only recently has ownership been willing to spend at the pace they are now. But even then, the bulk of the team’s money has gone to Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, Nabby and Boyle.

I think the Sharks have not had significant leverage to sign FAs, and as such, to get real production out of them. The Sharks would virtually HAVE to overspend.

I think this is why Niedermayer and Pronger did not arrive in Teal when they were on the move. And, given a certain conversation I had with a certain someone, I think I’m not just pulling this out of my ass.

Blake for $1M or less on the third pairing

Is actually decent in my books. I know he’s old and slow, but as a mentor of sorts to Huskins, and a physical presence that allows him (or Demers) to do what they do best, which is play the puck, seems like a good bet. Short list

None of them are available.

We got Joe by a lot of blind dumb luck and poor decision making on Boston’s part. You don’t get number one centers in trades unless something seriously wonky happens, and you don’t trade number one centers unless the sky is falling.

If you’d like to see Joe Thornton traded, you’re pretty much limited to fantasy hockey. If you would like to see him allowed to walk and someone else signed in his stead, that’s a possibility, but you have to wait a season for his contract to be up.

His puck management has not been good this season

But he is not alone. This is a team wide problem. Everyone from Dan Boyle to Ryane Clowe has been guilty of turnovers.

Trading Joe Thornton does not solve our puck management problems.

At the risk of bringing down the wrath of everyone else here, this is actually something I think Todd McLellan should shoulder some blame for. I don’t think he should be fired, but the honeymoon is over. Passing is a fundamental, and the team has been awful in that regard. There is far too much skill on the team for this to be such a consistent problem. Practice time should be devoted to it.

Yes, but Thornton is a set-up man, in the sense that he tries to make amazing passes so others have a really good chance to score a goal. And, more often than not, the pass goes through and the recipient either scores a goal, gets a really good scoring chance, or whiffs on the puck. He’s allowed to have giveaways because otherwise, there wouldn’t be those sweet scoring chances.

Plus, he backchecks like crazy when he gives the puck away. Is that a sign of a bad, lazy player?

But scapegoating Joe solves very little. Joe Thornton gets shut down in the playoffs? It happened to Sidney Crosby too. Guess what, Evgeni Malkin had the playoffs of a lifetime and Maxime Talbot was a hero.

And again, WHO ARE YOU GOING TO TRADE HIM FOR?

I don’t mean to sound rude, but, we stole Joe Thornton. Are we going to just give him away?

Because, unlike you, I realize how much luck is involved in the postseason and how difficult it is to win there. The GM’s job is to put together the best team possible, which is most evident in the regular season when sample size isn’t a massive issue.

I gotta say, I’ve been reading this long dialogue between you and a few other people, and it sure seems like FTF is not making much room for dissenting opinions.

I don’t agree with your position, but I’m not sure that thinking DW should be fired and JT traded is grounds for being considered a troll.

i know FTF seems to have these widespread opinions that almost everybody agrees with (Dan Boyle = stud, Patty Marleau = true captain, etc.), but i think we should be more welcoming of different view points.

Maybe I’m over-reacting and being unfair (no one has reduced to name-calling or anything like that), but I think we could all stand to be a little more open-minded and a little less condescending.

Agree on the more welcoming part, but in this case someone suggested trading Joe Thornton… that’s redonkulous

Now, if you say, hey, Joe Thornton should be traded, maybe bring in for him, it would improve us like this… well, we might listen and discuss it with you.

They thought that if they could win two WCs in a row, they can easily win the Olympics.

The difference though is that these are two different tournaments. It’s obvious Canada knew all their big opponents well. Babcock even knew that Weber plays really well against Datsyuk, so he paired them up and Datsyuk had a terrible game.

Bykov had no clue. He even admitted he doesn’t know NHL all that well, and many players said later that strategically, Canada was a mystery team to them.

Madness.

by Ivano M on Mar 3, 2010 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly. In the WC, a lot of the players that normally would play for Canada are either in the playoffs or burnt out/injured. But in the Olympics, everyone plays save for those who are really injured. Bykov simply wasn’t prepared for a fully operational Canadian Death Star.

WC is also a longer tournament, with 16 teams instead of 12 participating, so there is more time to get the machine going, so to speak. In 2009 Russia didn’t really face any serious competition until the final where they faced Canada.

Here in the Olympics one has to fire on all cylinders from the beginning. If Russia was better prepared for Slovakia, they would have been no. 1 seed.

I wouldn't count on much from the Olympics

To be honest, I really feel HTML was a non-factor (or a minimal factor).

The problem for them was very similar to the regular season, there are so few “measuring stick” games for them.

HTML looked good against Norway. Great. They looked good against the Oilers too.

They were good against Switzerland. Better. They should have likely gotten more tangible results rather than just “good pressure” but good goaltending often beats good pressure.

In the real tough games, can’t say HTML were the biggest factor. They didn’t get much ice against the US in the final, but I think that has as much to do with the Getzlaf line playing out of its mind (hey, does that sound familiar?) and against Russia, the opposition was pretty much dead.

IMO, HTML didn’t “choke” in the Olympics, but they hardly looked like world-beaters. They were surrounded by lots of talent.

I don’t think it did as much for them as it could have.

Dan Boyle is an entirely different story, but b**** please, he’s Dan F***ing Boyle.

Him playing so hard was actually what made the US’s loss hurt less. Patty just so wanted to win.

Marleau was good

I’m probably being a bit unfair to him (and to Heatley). But outside of the Swiss game, I never saw them take over a game the way Getzlaf-Perry-Morrow did against the US in the final. And, US >>> Swiss.

That speaks volumes to me.

I thought HTML did great. They scored goals in almost every game except the gold medal game against the US If i remember correctly.

I thought they actually performed best in the games where the rest of the team wasn’t really performing, while other lines shined during those blowout games against Norway and Germany.

What line scored the only two goals against Switzerland? HTML. What line usually started off the scoring (which proved to be a huge factor in the olympics, especially for Canada) for Team Canada? HTML.

Just because they didn’t score a goal in the Gold medal game doesn’t mean they weren’t good in the tough games, they had a lot of chances in that game.

by Khaaz on Mar 3, 2010 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

Very fair point

Again though, if I could re-emphasize one thing:

Tougher measuring stick for HTML. They didn’t have many chances against truly elite competion. Getzlaf’s line was invisible against the Swiss, but dominant in the final. HTML was largely the reverse.

Big game experience was the name of the game for the Olympians. HTML stepped up in an early game against relatively weak competition, the Getzlaf line stepped up in the biggest game on Canadian ice in nearly 3 decades. I think that speaks for itself.

Though, I might add, Eric Staal didn’t have a super Olympics either, but we know he can step it up in the playoffs so I think it is important to look at long term patterns of behavior and play rather than try to read into one series of games.

by Mr Tea on Mar 3, 2010 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think it’s fair to come to the conclusion that HTML can’t perform in tough playoff-type games just because they didn’t score in that one game against the USA.

by Khaaz on Mar 3, 2010 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

Patty didn't score

but we’re not saying that he can’t perform. HTML was not as effective or dominating as they could have been and when they needed to be.

by Mr Tea on Mar 3, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

The HTML was the best, most consistant line for Canada in the early games, when the rest of the team just flat out didn’t show up. Babcock even said as much. When everyone else showed up, they didn’t need to carry the team anymore…I wouldn’t call that disappearing. Not everyone on a star studded team can score every game. IMO, HTML came through when they were needed the most.

"I want people to be afraid of how much they love me." ~Michael Scott

by ZeroIndulgence on Mar 3, 2010 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

I remember how early on, people were complaining that HTML was getting so much ice time. Babcock’s answer for that? They were the only line that was actually playing well, and so got a disproportionate amount of ice time to match that. As the tournament went on and players started learning each others’ habits, HTML didn’t need to play as much anymore because they were no longer the only line that was clicking.

Very true that they didn't have to carry the load

I suppose I’m more disappointed that HTML didn’t keep rolling and take over as the tournament went on. Considering that they have been playing together all season, I don’t know why they couldn’t keep the pace up.

I personally found it more telling that a guy like Brendan Morrow, who got less than 10 minutes of ice against the Swiss, suddenly found himself playing with Getzlaf and Perry in the later rounds and earned his ice for the final, while HTML ended up playing 3rd or 4th line minutes and were largely a non-factor in the final.

Canada owes HTML for carrying them in the Swiss game, but considering this was supposed to be Canada’s top line, almost hands down, I would consider them a bit of a disappointment compared to their expectations.

by ElvisVF101 on Mar 3, 2010 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think people expected HTML to be the hands down top line. I think the people who put together Team Canada expected HTML to be a line with good chemistry right out the gates that could provide good consistent scoring throughout the tournament and they did exactly that.

I thought they were always a threat when they were on the ice, even if they weren’t scoring. You can’t expect every shot or good-chance to amount to a goal.

The bottom line is that HTML provided consistent scoring for Team Canada, carried the team when they needed to, and were always dangerous. What more could you ask for?

Your right Zero, HTML did consistently play well, especially in the beginning of the tournament. However, I credit that to their experience playing with one another rather than their ability to “step it up”. If I remember correctly, Babcock broke up HTML during the gold medal game, so again, as a complete line they didn’t play as well as they could have.

Really

Thank god for small favors..When you look at it, Chicago and Detroit also have goalie issues..Vancouver could be the sleeper if Luongo stands on his head..He is the one goalie to potentially fear in the west..

You can get to Luongo though

He has rebound control issues, and in the spotlight, he tends to try to do too much and gets himself into trouble.

If you can limit Vancouver to one line (the Sedins), Luongo won’t be able to carry them.

If I may offer one rebuttal

Anaheim’s Olympians probably had a better tournament than the Sharks.

Getzlaf and Perry were the difference against the US. Bobby Ryan played well for the US. Teemu Selanne is coming off a very emotional tournament. Jonas Hiller was the best goaltender not named Ryan Miller.

Just food for though.

Getzlaf, yes, hands down, but that’s not a surprise. Perry – I’m not so sure. He didn’t really show up until semifinal and final. Good for him that Canada made it all the way there, because if they didn’t, he’d be one of the firsts to get crucified.

Anaheim still has to make playoffs first, which is going to be a big challenge with all but the Oilers and BJs fighting for those sports.

In my mind

Correy Perry goes as Ryan Getzlaf goes. He’s a pest with skill, and with his confidence running so high, and his trending upward in the tournament, I look for him to finish the season strong.

Absolutely agree with this… Im concerned about facing Hiller again. Especially becuase I’m not convinced that DW addressed the inconsistency on the secondary scoring enough. Unless of course you count Heatley.

Hiller is a concern. he could just a easily steal a series again against us. And I don’t think we would have a prayer against Detroit right now either. I think we are going to need some luck in our draws.

Maybe we should tank some games and end up with Calgary/Nashville/ Avalanche/Yotes first -second round match up??

Knowing the Sharks luck for the past 5 or 6 years, we’ll probably get Detroit in the 1st round; the only team in the West besides Chicago that could beat us.

I think it would be in the Sharks best interest to drop to the 2 or 3 spot. At least then we’ll be able to play the Avs, Coyotes, or Preds. Maybe even the Kings.

But there is no way that Detroit doesn’t make the playoffs. If they get that 8th seed, and we’re stuck at 1st, all hell will break loose.

The Sharks would have to have an implosion of the highest order to drop to the 3 spot

SJ – 89 pts 63 GP
CHI – 87 pts 62 GP
VAN – 78 pts 62 GP

If we fell to the three spot, it would mean we can’t beat anyone and the discussion is moot.

We’re going to have to play 2 to 3 tough series to go anywhere. Fact of life. It’s time we (and the team) suck it up on that fact.

Why is everyone so convinced that Detroit is definately going to be the 8 seed. With their team healthy, they could easily move up to 6 and make this a moot point. Or they could easily move into 7th, and then everyone hoping the Sharks actually play poorly this month to get the 2 seed will cry. At this point, it doesn’t matter. We cannot control who we face. The Sharks just need to worry about getitng themselves into playoff form and ready for a battle, no matter who our opponent ends up being.
