[Update]: Ryan Vesce has been recalled on loan from Worcester and will play today.
It's funny how things can change so quickly-- just a year ago today Columbus was in the midst of making a run to the playoffs, one that eventually resulted in their first postseason appearance in franchise history. The team was young, exciting, coached by one of the best minds in the game, and seemingly on the up and up.
Flash forward a year and not much has gone right for the Jackets. Columbus had a brutal nine game losing streak in December of this season and eventually fired Ken Hitchcock in February; he was replaced by then assistant coach Claude Noel who has led the team to a 3-1-2 record under his command, including a 3-0 shutout of the San Jose Sharks just before the Olympic break.
Columbus always seems to play San Jose well, with a strong forecheck that doesn't give the Sharks a whole lot of time to execute on the breakout. Since Columbus is out of the playoff picture (and therefore not the best team to look at in terms of litmus tests and the like), executing good first passes out of the zone should be the main focal point tonight. San Jose always seems to struggle against teams who can consistently apply pressure to their defenseman by physically wearing them down over sixty minutes. Columbus may not be a good team this year, or at least one who hasn't had their record reflect their talent level, but they definitely pose a good test for the Sharks in this category.
On that note, I've always been a big fan of Derek Dorsett. He's scrappy as hell and reminds me of Scott Nichol, except with slightly better hands and a bigger frame. Solid defensively and has a real knack for getting under opposing player's skin. Watch for him to make an impact tonight, especially with Raffi Torres gone.
By now most of you have heard the news that Maxim Lapierre has been suspended four games for his hit on Scott Nichol. It was a dirty play, blatant as hell, and four games is an amount that is definitely ballpark for this type of boarding call-- well, make that non-call, as referee Chris Lee was oblivious to the situation.
Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy broke down the proceedings in a post early Friday morning:
It's a shame that just as this Dale Hunter-esque check into the end boards occurred, Lee's whistle malfunctioned and his arms were suddenly paralyzed; those can be the only logical explanations for why Lapierre wasn't penalized on what is, without question, one of the most unsportsmanlike plays we've seen in the calendar year.
- "Lapierre's blatant, injurious, non-penalized hit on Nichol"-- Puck Daddy
Dale Hunter is obviously one of the most notorious goons to ever play the game, a goon who amassed 3,565 penalty minutes during his career. The reference alludes to his hit on Pierre Turgeon in the 1993 Playoffs, which is up there as one of the most blatant and egregious hits in NHL history.
Of course this is hyperbole, and used to provide a frame of reference for the reader before seeing the video. All effective writers use it, and Mr. Wyshynski is obviously an effective writer as he runs the most widely read hockey blog in the United States.
Which makes it surprising that he drops this after word of Lapierre's suspension:
As you saw Friday morning, Montreal Canadiens winger Maxime Lapierre's "garbage" hit from behind on Scott Nichol(notes) of the San Jose Sharks last night was obvious and injurious. But enough for a four-game suspension?
For what, grinning after he wasn't penalized?
- "Maxim Lapierre gets excessive 4-game suspension on Nichol hit"-- Puck Daddy
Wyshynski has banged the drum quite heavily on the Wheel of Justice over the years, and has done a good job of holding Colin Campbell accountable for his random and illogical suspension practices. However, if dirty hits are to be cleansed from the game, I'm not sure that splitting hairs over whether a two or four game suspension is most applicable, especially when it is, "without question, one of the most unsportsmanlike plays we've seen in the calendar year."
The hit was a crosscheck from behind, near the boards, against a vulnerable player. Campbell got this one right.

The question now is who gets called up in Nichol's place for the estimated 7-10 days that the organization expects him to be out for. His injury history is a bit concerning, but on the same token those have been mostly concussions and groins-- in fact, I believe this is the first shoulder injury he has sustained in his career, so there should be no worry of re-aggravating a previous ailment.
McLellan has done a very good managing injuries this season, and with the playoffs approaching, one has to think that Nichol won't be rushed back. Much like Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
I advocated for Logan Couture on Wednesday, and TCY ran a piece on Friday reiterating some of the same things-- we both feel that he would be a good addition to the lineup, in both the offensive and defensive department.
That’s the diamond in the rough, really. Although Nichol is an essential part to the revamped bottom two lines ability to make an impact on games, another young player will be given the opportunity to increase the depth of the roster down the stretch run. One that has had great success this season at the AHL level to boot.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by McGinn, Malhotra, and Pavelski. Jan Hejda shuts down the top line and I make a trade for him in NHL 2010.
Go Sharks.

I read Puck Daddy often. But Greg Wysh. is clearly a Shark hater. He is the first person I plan on gloating over if the Sharks ever win a cup.
I realize this has been discussed but I wanted to get in my say.

yeah I read him often … but I always have to remind myself that he’s extremely biased against the Sharks … makes it hard to tolerate at times

Why do I have a gut feeling one of the Sharks will get a hat trick tonight?
Maybe because there has been a couple hatties vs. the BJ’s…

Yeah, I got an email about an hour ago about it but can’t find a link.
Can’t say I’m a big fan of the guy. Too small to serve an effective role on a checking line.

I don’t have a link either, but i heard it from someone who follows Worcester closely.
I like Vesce alright, but not really in a fourth line checking line role.
I figure they’re just giving all the top prospects a chance to come in and make a difference and see who will be most effective come playoffs.
Good point on them approaching it as an opportunity just to rotate players through. I think Couture would have been a better bet though, both for the reasons I outlined on Wednesday as well as the fact that Logan is going to be a big part of this franchise in the future. Vesce’s 27 right now haha.

I was watching the pre-game interview with Vesce… I think they called him up because he’s a small, right handed centerman with a high squeeky voice. He’s essentially the same guy except not as gritty…

I’ll bet ya a beer that Vesce scores tonight, on some fluke bounce that Shelley could have banged home. It’s the only thing that can happen at this point.

Upon a few moments of self reflection, I realize that I have an irrational dislike for Ryan Vesce.

What if Logan Couture was still in juniors? Would you dislike Vesce then? Because I remember someone advocating that Vesce should be re-signed…

Meh. I really went back and forth with it. The comment in it’s entirety can be found here.
I do really like his skating stride though. It’s funny.

Hah, “that Shelley could have banged home.” Do you just not like New Yorkers?
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Haha I actually love New Yorkers. I think his size bugs me for some odd reason. That and the fact that he’s 27. It’s a good depth move for the organization and all, but at this point I think working in the younger guys to NHL playing time is the way to go.

It’s actually really interesting – DP interviews Nichol about the hit and his thoughts on it, and he has a really good perspective on the entire thing. This is my favorite quote:
I’m no saint by any means. I’ve been suspended, too, before and in the heat of the battle, you don’t mean to do it. You’re trying to finish your check or your trying to stick up for a teammate. There’s so many different variables.
"You never want to see anybody suspended. It never looks good for the organization or the league or anybody. Our game is so fast and it’s such a great game, you hate to see those kind of incidents being replayed year after year.
"It’s a physical game. You’ve got 82 games a year and there are 10 or 12 teams playing each night so there’s going to be a few incidents here and there.

Okay, somehow that posted and I wasn’t finished editing it. Just pretend that the entire second half is in block quotes, okay?

Favorite part of interview:
Q: When you got up, you were ready to scrap. Did you really think you had a chance with just your left hand?
"I wasn’t thinking, but yeah, I did. I don’t know how I would have fared, but I was pretty upset. That’s pretty much my natural reaction. Like I said, that’s how we play and sometimes it gets me in trouble."

Strange.
Maybe they still want Couture to get some time playing in Woostah after the injury, even though he seems fine from the stat sheet.

From SJSharks.com
"We need a centerman with Scotty Nichol gone and we’ve liked what Ryan Vesce has done," Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan said. "He’s been up here in the past playing on the fourth line role and he’s really responsible and takes care of his linemates defensively. If we have to bump him up, he’s shown he’s capable of playing with Jumbo (Joe Thornton) and Heatley."
Couture can do that!

FTF MEET MULIGAN
Okay, so the medals + Shark fan paparazzi were still hogging the section I suggested we meet at last time ‘round. My bad, my bad. So, if anyone wants to chat during the 2nd intermission, let’s meet here, near the gigantic question mark :D
"Sorry guys, I’m not going to try and hit (Douglas) Murray anymore. It doesn’t work." - Steve Ott, Dallas Stars.
Hahaha, yeah. Good times on Thursday. Let’s meet in the middle of the mass of humanity! They actually routed the medal viewing line into the Men’s room line. It was, literally, insane.
As always, if I remember, I’ll wander down that way!

I’ll pretend to meet you all during second intermission as I’ll be watching from my couch.

That’s a less fun place to watch a game from!
This will be the last game I get a chance to watch on this homestand…since they don’t play again til Thursday next week, and I will be in Vegas. Sadly, I doubt they’ll show Sharks games in Southern Nevada…

Can Somebody Explain the Minors?
I’m not new to hockey, but I don’t understand the system with the minors. Why do certain players get called up? Last year Vesce was up a lot. This year there was a lot of Ferrerio, and McGinn. We haven’t seen Ferrerio in a while. When those players spend a lot of time with San Jose, people talk a lot about them like they’re doing well and are going to be the next star. Then they get sent back down, and we don’t see them for a while.
I can think of a few reasons for this, but I’m not sure what the real reason is. Do they go on slumps, so management picks the hot player in the minors? Do they pick them based on weaknesses on SJ and how to pair against opponents?
Call ups are chosen for a variety of reasons
First: Need of the big club. If we need a winger we’re not calling up a defender or even a center in a lot of cases. They also try to pick a player that will fit the role, like Helminen a few weeks ago, was a good 3rd line style gritty player, not necessarily expected to put up a lot of points.
Second: Cap considerations. We can’t bring up a player that we can’t fit under the cap. We also usually don’t send down players or call up players that will have to pass through waivers as there is a possibility that we will lost them to another team (and in some cases still be on the hook for half their salary). This leads to more expensive players like Couture and McGinn remaining in the minors and cheaper players like Vesce and Ferriero making their way to the big club.
Third: Injuries. Kids get hurt in the minors and need to recover as well. Vesce, Moore and Couture have all been hurt in the minors this year and have probably missed potential call ups due to that fact.
Fourth: Merit. Getting a shot in the big leagues is a reward, often given to players that are really performing well in the minors. Much like our NHL’ers the kids in the minors get on streaks of good and bad play and the NHL club may not want to bring up a kid in the middle of a slump even though they have more talent than the hot guy that gets the call.
All of that said, I don’t know why Vesce got the call over Couture. I’m sticking with the matching high squeeky voices that both he and Nichol have.

What Evilducks said. This year has been a bit of a side show too, because the Sharks are so close to the salary cap. Number two on his list has been the main factor the last six months.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Pretty much this
One of the reasons that Worcester is doing so well is that the Sharks are really following through on their rewards system – play well in the AHL, and you will get called up when the need arises. That’s why around a dozen different WorSharks have seen time in the NHL this season – the organization wants to reward them for their good play, and so they get their NHL salary (which tends to be significantly more money) and a chance to play against and with some of their heroes (like Jason Demers and Dan Boyle – so awesome).
And I’m thinking that Vesce was called up because it might be one of the few cases in which he can be called up (Nichol’s injury might fall under emergency recall and make the re-entry and demoting waivers invalid, which Vesce would be otherwise subject to). Also, he had to fight back from a pretty long groin injury that was Mitchell-esque in its set-backs, and so they wanted to reward him for that.

Thanks Evilducks
How do cap considerations change throughout the year (I understand they change once we make a trade on our roster)?
Salary is prorated by day. To use a quick example:
Player A makes $1,000,000 per season, and the season is 100 days long. For each day he is on the NHL roster, he accounts for $10,000 against the cap. When he is sent down to the minors, he does not count against the team’s cap number for the days he is done. Same thing goes in the event of a trade.
There’s a load of information here if you are interested.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Vesce isn't that much of a surprise
I think that they’ve wanted to call him up for a while, and he’s been reasonably effective when called up regardless of where he plays. (He had a couple of excellent games on Thornton’s wing.) The main reason I believe he hadn’t been called up until now is that he’ll have to be placed on waivers after today’s game to be sent down. (I think he was either 1 game or a couple days from being waiver eligible last time he was sent down.) Since the trade deadline has passed, it is now highly unlikely that any team would claim him off waivers as he would not be allowed to dress in the playoffs. (His contract is only 1 year too, so he wouldn’t necessarily be valuable to another team for next year either.)
Couture is good, but Vesce should be an effective center for McGinn and I’d rather he continue to develop with more icetime in the AHL and not re-injure himself playing up here.
I think mymclife has it correct up top where she said that he wouldn’t be subject to waivers because of emergency recall. Who knows though.
