Five For Howling |
What a wild ride it has been eh? It seems like only yesterday we were gearing up for yet another grueling 82 game season, licking our chops at the prospect of some glorious hockey after four long months of not knowing what to do with ourselves. From Patrick Marleau's first goal to the 76 minute third period penalty parade against Vancouver last night, we've seen our fair share of ups and downs, peaks and valleys.
And the journey is just beginning.
A wise man once said that the playoffs are an event "that will test the very fiber of our existence" (okay that man was me), and this year is no different. The pressure on this team to make a deep run is enormous, and every single shift Wednesday onward is bigger than life itself. It is by far the best time to be alive.
Alas, I am getting ahead of myself. With Fan Appreciation Night at HP Pavilion tonight, another division title in the bag for San Jose, and playoff seedings yet to be determined, I would like to take some time today to thank you for continuing to frequent our humble corner of the world wide web. You really make this an easy job for me to do, and without that vast support, I can assure you TCY, Ivano, and I wouldn't be where we are today. Our passion for the team has grown thanks to you. Our desire to bring you the best Sharks coverage out there has grown thanks to you. And our hunger for fine wine and finer women...well, that hasn't been changed in any way because of you. But you've accepted us all the same.
To show my gratitude for all that you've given us, here's a song I composed late last night. It's in the same vein as the "I Can Make One Phone Call" track that hit store shelves last summer, and while it's probably not as good (seriously, how freaking great was that song), a parody of Bud Light's Real Men of Genius commercials seemed to fit the zany mood of this site quite well.
I'm obviously out of my vocal range on this one-- oh how it burns indeed. Lyrics can be found here.
Thanks again for everything. I couldn't ask for a better group of people to watch this team with during the next three months.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Heatley (who gets number 40), Marleau (who could use a goal right now), and Demers (on the power play). San Jose keeps their first seed dreams alive and draws upon that passion from Thursday night all the way into mid-summer.
Go FTF readers, and most importantly, Go Sharks.

I was just about to ask when we were getting another song.
Is this one also off the album “Going Five-hole on Your Grandma”?

Playoffs
Hey all,
I know this is my first post, but I have a request. I’ve been an avid reader of the blog for the last 2 years. I love the sharks. I grew up in San Jose, but after college, I made the decision to join the military. I am an officer in the US Army, but I got shipped over here to Korea. Much like the last few years, I believe this is our year. Go Sharks!!! Here’s my question: is anyone planning on DVR or recording the playoff games? Any chance you could post them on a file-sharing site like thepirayebay.org? I would kill to be able to watch the sharks play in the playoffs, but hockey coverage is very limited here on AFN. If anyone has a solution to my problem, please let me know. Go Sharks!!
I feel your pain
There are tons of sites that stream sports, it’s a good time not to have cable. Two of the best that I’ve found:
This is a great place to start, can find virtually any sport being broadcast in US or Europe
This site has by far the best quality streams, but selection is limited.
Go Sharks!

if you have some cash to burn (not much, at this point, the price is way down)
nhl center ice online is actually a pretty killer deal.
i dont have cable, so getting ice hockey on tv is not an option. but i can watch 95% of sharks games live, and 100% of sharks games 48 hours after the game, as every game for the past 3 seasons is available in the archive.
if that fails (which it doesnt…) atdhe.net is pretty reliable.
oh, and thanks for your service sir!

For some reason I have a feeling Jumbo is going to be a goddamn beast this year. Sharks are going to be tied 1-1 in the series going on the road for game three in the first round, and five minutes into the second he is just going to take over. ~Plank

I’m really tempted to get NHL Center Ice but will i be able to see the CSN broadcast for sharks games with Randy/Drew or will it be some random broadcasting team? If you can choose which broadcast you want to watch then im on so on board.
thats the downside,
and i may write a strongly worded letter to the folks in charge, as it is truly aweful watching a game announced by the d bags in pheonix or detroit.
tradeoff though, and id rather ignore the idiots and be able to watch hockey and not hope i can get a grainy jumpy stream on some random site.

Oh how it burns!
Instant classic. Chicago v. Detroit takes on a new importance tomorrow, especially after the Sharks win tonight. Colorado has been looking terrible lately while LA has been turning it on. Crazy how a whole season is decided by the last game of the year.

Brilliant!
I was hating life this morning having to be at work, but that song just made my day.

I was having trouble waking up (late night) until I heard that song – awesome!
Also I’ll be at this game, so if anyone else is going to be, let me know where you want to meet beforehand (preferably by phone). I’m not positive I’ll be able to check here before I head down.
Great year Sharks and here’s keeping my fingers and toes cross on an even better great playoff run.

At least with Detroit's win last night
we won’t have to worry about playing them anymore. Even if Nashville were to win its final game, Detroit would still hold the tie breaker.
Now we just have to worry about avoiding L.A. and we’ll be all good.
by CalFaithful707 on Apr 10, 2010 10:07 AM PDT reply actions
How does Detroit hold the tie break? They have 3 less wins than Nashville…. Unless the standings on the NHL website are wrong.
by skilletboy on Apr 10, 2010 10:41 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Nashville still has more wins than Detroit. So if CHI wins, and DET loses, Nashville gets ahead.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
That's what I thought...,
I didn’t want to come off all high-and-mighty…
So I’m thinking Chi is looking to lock up the west and screw the hell out of us tomorrow. If Nashville wins today and Chi wins tomorrow…
I don’t even want to think about that right now…
by skilletboy on Apr 10, 2010 10:48 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
If Nasvhille wins and Detroit loses
both teams will be tied in points which will put them back to where they were before.
Detroit holds the head to head tiebreaker which trumps the wins category I believe. Both teams were tied in points before but Detroit was put ahead of Nashville.
by CalFaithful707 on Apr 10, 2010 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions
Actually nevermind about that.
I think ESPN and NHL.com only had Detroit ahead of Nasvhille because Detroit had a game in hand. I forgot that they put teams that are tied in points ahead if they played less games.
by CalFaithful707 on Apr 10, 2010 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions
Head to head doesn’t trump overall wins. If they tie in pts 1st tie break is wins.
by skilletboy on Apr 10, 2010 11:07 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Tie breaker rules are -
The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
The greater number of games won.
The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any “odd” games, shall be used to determine the standing.
The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
Interesting to note the last time the Sharks won their season finale was ’04 vs LA, which required two last second goals by Stuart to force overtime and a beauty of a snipe by Vinny for the win.

I am also totally jealous of my family who is going to this game.

Shit
So if the Kings win tomorrow against Colorado (who are probably going to be resting their guys since they’re locked in the 8th seed), and Nashville wins tonight against the Blues, we’re probably going to play Detroit in the first round lol.
I don’t think Detroit would really mind playing us, and so they might decide to just rest their guys up instead of having to play their asses off to beat Chicago who are fighting for the 1st seed. That will send Detroit down to 7th (they’d tie Nashville for 6th but Nashville has more wins) and set them up for a first round matchup against us.
So if Nashville wins tonight, our fate is in Detroits hands (assuming we win tonight, although i think we will) and we could be in trouble.
I dunno...
a lot of things have to happen for us to face detroit.
Nashville has to win tonight (the game is currently scoreless after 1)
LA have to at least make it to OT on Sunday
Chicago have to beat Detroit in regulation
and even if those three things do happen, I’m confident the Sharks can take Detroit in a 7-game series, given our recent burst of secondary scoring and our somewhat-cleaned up defense with the return of Vlasic.
by JamesGotALeg on Apr 10, 2010 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Well for the reasons i mentioned above, all of those things are fairly likely to happen imo.
Nashville is a better team than the the blues in general, and the Blues don’t have anything to play for really besides pride. Meanwhile, it’s a huge game for Nashville since it can make the difference between Nashville ending up as the 5th seed or the 7th seed, so they’ll be playing their asses off.
Someone posted it at some point,
but I can’t seem to find it.
