Adrian Dater calls for suspension of Rob Blake
To me, there is just no question this hit by Rob Blake on TJ Galiardi deserves a suspension. It’s a cheap shot to the head, just what the league said it doesn’t want. If you look closely, you also see Blake leave his feet before the hit.
Anybody who doesn’t think so is either a Sharks homer or just dumb.
In a series that has seen two games decided in the final minutes of play, emotions are going to run high and accusations such as these will be common place. It's just the nature of the playoffs, and as we have seen before, the Denver Post is not afraid to let these emotions trickle into their coverage of the team.
The hit in question occurs in overtime as Colorado forward T.J. Galiardi enters the zone with his head down. Rob Blake delivers a strong forearm to the chest of Galiardi, causing Galiardi's head to whip back. The momentum of that impact leaves Galiardi in a vulnerable position, and as Blake finishes his check, his follow through causes him to make contact with Galiardi's helmet and knock it to the ice.
There isn't too much here that screams suspension-- although Blake leaves his feet, it appears that does not occur until after he delivers the hit into Galiardi's chest and explodes upwards.
Mile High Hockey writer Dustin Burfiend doesn't think the hit was suspension worthy, but does have concerns on how Blake seems to be targeting players.
"What is making me and most Avs fans see red, however, is he seems targeting our young players," Burfiend said over email. "The knee on Duchene was dangerous for obvious reasons and the Galiardi interference, a low hip check on a player without the puck, could have turned out really bad."
Avalanche head coach Joe Sacco refrained from calling for a suspension through the media, stating that it would be up for the league officials to decide on the legality of the play.
With the number of controversial hits that Rob Blake has administered to the Avalanche over the last two weeks (Mueller in the regular season, a kneeing penalty on Duchene last night), the crowd at the Pepsi Center should be quite lively tomorrow in response to their former assistant captain. Treatment along the lines of Chris Pronger at HP Pavilion is not out of the question.
Hard to predict how a Blake game-winning goal or another strong hit would be received from the Avalanche faithful, but something tells me it wouldn't be pretty.
From that side of the aisle at least.
Go Sharks.

Wait, no one told you Dater was a tool?
He once wrote (this season, actually) that Nashville should and I quote ‘get the heck out of the NHL’. He was making fun of our attendance. We promptly out-drew them at the gate. Karma’s a bitch.
Anyway, Dater doesn’t know too much about hockey. Be nice, pat him on the head, move on.

I went to both Nashville and Colorado this season to see the Sharks on the road – Nashville was completely sold out, and Denver made Phoenix (where I went for a Yotes-Ducks game in December) seem full.
Karma is most definitely a bitch.

It was an obvious shove the the chest. Gagliardi is the one who went into the hit already on his heels. Blake didnt do anything but his job.

Avs are just bitter now that the anal intrusion has officially begun. They got pounded like they should and it ain’t gonna stop now so they best get used to it.
It’s a tough angle on the replay because you can’t see where the right hand hits Galiardi.
Assuming he didn’t punch him in the head it’s a clean hit.

Don't you just love when you click refresh on WTC and a new post is there?
Anyway here’s WTC update:
Rob Blake seemed genuinely mystified by my questions about the overtime hit on T.J. Galiardi, saying it was the first time he heard about any fuss.
"That’s hockey," he said.
Does he think the league would review it: "Not at all."
Awwww
First people blow Blake off because he the old man on the ice, and now there’s complaints that the old man is too hard of a hitter. Man, Blake just doesn’t get any slack.

Battle of California
Clean hit
Puck was coming towards him, it appears he made contact with it for at least a second or two before getting knocked on his ass and having it swooped away by Nichol. I honestly don’t see the problem with this hit. The Duchene hit was a little questionable, but that was a clean, open-ice, message sending hit.
“Targeting the young kids”? Give me a break. Blake’s doing his job: stepping up, playing big, and using his size/weight to stop any offensive opportunities the Avs might try to set up. If the Avs want to whine/complain, they shouldn’t be in the playoffs in the first place, because that’s what the atmosphere is gonna be like from here on out: Not dirty, but very aggressive, very quick, and very strong.
Go Sharks.

Ill concede, 95-96 you were only upper half. Though admittedly that is one more “earned” Cup than the Sharks have had. But wasn’t that the exact year after they came from Quebec? Not that that affects much, same franchise and all. Colorado just bought a team right on the precipice.

Eh…I really think you’re grasping at straws here, but it’ll obviously be up to the league.
..:Fear The Fin:..
Yeah, the most important part is left out between :20 and :21 seconds
you have no screen grabs between those two time frames, yet 3 at the:21 second mark of the clip. I don’t think anyone is arguing that Blake made no contact whatsoever with TJ’s head. What everyone is arguing, and not verifiable in the pics above, is that Blake INITIALLY hit TJ in the chest. The force of the follow through led to Blake’s forearm upwards into his head.
This makes this not a suspendable hit under the new rule (initial contact must be made with the head). If you could post pics of the contact point, that might be a little more persuasive. At least to me, anyways.
Yeah, they posted the last two pics pointing to his “bicep stripe” as being right on Galiardi’s head. I posted the first two pointing out that the initial point of contact was square in the chest. I think the second picture shows that pretty well and is as close as I could get to the contact point. Blake’s elbow is still at his side and making contact with Galiardi’s chest while Galiardi’s head is buried in Blake’s chest/clavicle and is about to be whiplashed back as he crumbles and Blake follows through.
The feeling over there from some guys is that Blake purposefully followed through and hit him in the face with stick and hands with the intent to injure Galiardi (and continue his quest to take out all their young stars). I agree that they’re making a lot out of nothing and grasping at straws. Blake being shocked that people are even talking about the hit either further proves my point or makes him a great liar.
oh yeah?
Well then that makes me the dumbest homer ever. I love it. Is “Dater” German for Douchebag?
I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.

Here's a questing for all Av's fans.......
If you’re trying to hit someone in the face…….like imagine you were an MMA fighter (not that the sport interests me but these young kids are into it these days)……..would you start your punch aiming at the guys chest in the hopes of finishing that punch in the face? Even if his hands or forearm ended up close to the head…….do you think if Rob Blake intended to hit him in the face, he would have started the hit at his chest? The only reason his hands ended up that high was because Gagliardi was on his heels.

by SanJoseLandShark on Apr 17, 2010 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions
He got his arms up high. Was it an intentional play to injure? no, but being careless instead of malevolent isn’t much of a trade-off.
That said I’m not sure if Blake deserves a suspension. It’s a difficult one for me because it’s playoffs, (and it was in playoff OT). Regular season I think it’s a 1-gamer personally, and in theory anything bad in season shold be the same in the second season. But we all know it isn’t. Not sure where I sit on this one, but I don’t think it’s as clear cut as either Dater or commentators here make it sound. There’s a lot of gray in this one.
I thought Boyle’s slew foot on Galiardi in the 2nd period was a lot more intentionally dirty. I was a lot more upset about that one

What did you expect Blake to do? Put his hands behind his back if he wants to hit a guy? Should he tell him to stop, warn him that he wanted to hit him, put his arms behind his back, and throw his chest at him in a chest bump kind of way? Would that be better?
This is why the whole blindside thing getting too much attention was a bad thing. Now every time someone gets hit hard, pansies are going to whine that there should be suspensions.

I think it’s time to just give up trying to explain to him the truth all he see’s is a hit to the head and has blinders onto what happens when two forces collide. Go touch up on your physics,,
Newtons third law of relativity states “Every action has a reaction equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.” Hence the force of the hit knocks your player on his back while blakes forearms will follow through with the hit going in the direction of your player… which is up in the air as he’s thrown onto his back

That's what we call a decleeter in football...
when you apply that amount of force in addition to the combination of the two crashing into each its pretty obvious what’s going to happen. One person’s going to have a whiplash effect (which your player had) and when he starts flying on his back the person completing the hit will go with the motion of the player. Not sure if that makes sense but he was not aiming at the head it just so happend that as your player was falling on his back the follow through went in an upward angle which 99% of the time i think will be the case.

That’s also the reason Blake “jumped”. What actually happened was the force of the impact caused Blake’s body to be lifted in the air.

I don't understand how people think Blake "Jumped"
He was skating backwards, braced himself and hit Galiardi.
How can you go from skating backwards to jumping forwards in less than a second? I’m no expert (but I did see the replay), but I don’t think that’s possible.
My opinion on the matter: We’re all too close to it right now. Give a couple weeks and some people might change their minds (or not). I remember when what’s-his -face got the suspension for the hit on Nichol, I thought he deserved it. But afterward looking back, I calmed down and changed my mind realizing it wasn’t really as bad as I had been making it out to be.
Still, right now I’m of the opinion that it is not suspension worthy. Contact with the head was made, but not ILLEGAL contact. It was not the primary source of contact.
I think someone's bitter because an old man smash pounded one of their young players...

the time between the first two pics shows you how fast it happened … completely reasonable to also see it that the aim was the chest, the momentum of the hit moved the arms up with one falling … and how many times has it been mentioned that feet come up some with the force of a hit? it has come up too many times. so they are trying to use this as proof of a dirty hit? please!
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
Here, I'll fill in the blank...
Here’s Rob Blake’s forearms, in Galiardi’s chest. Blake’s head and Galiardi’s head are in the same place. His forearms are not in the same place as the heads are. Chest hit. As Galiardi dropped like a rock, the head passed by where the arms were, which, on follow through, probably brushed his head…but that wasn’t the hit…that was the aftermath.

There is literally zero grey area in this picture. His chest is concave (which you can tell by the arch of his back) because he is getting smashed in the chest at the time. He then falls, which brings his head DOWN through the followthrough of the hit. It’s really not difficult.
Sigh, if posting irrefutable evidence clearly doesn’t sway you, I’m done. You win. Congratulations. Your trophy is in the mail

don’t say that….though I"m an only child..I’d love to have kids of my own one day…probably 2 max…no more than that. Kids bring a lot of joy to your lives…as far as I know. :)

that should have come with more thought and a disclaimer than what I just said…obviously with the right person and mutual agreement between both parents….children would bring joy to those participants lives…
plus who wouldn’t love little Grays running around huh? I think you’d be a kick ass mom fun one at that. Plus we can always use more little Sharks fans :)

knowing me as I do I think more of me might be too much for the universe to handle.
And you want to tell that whole joy thing to my mom? She hates kids. It’s hilarious.

hahahaaha
I always say that…the world cannot handle a little me…even meeting people like me (personality wise) I could not/would not be able to date someone like me, the world would explode…but..at the end of the day you love your partner you look at your partner and don’t you just sorta, just a little, want a little piece of you left in this world to show the rest of them how its done?
And again….we need more little Sharkies :) but back to reality…its totally up to you and your spouse its totally a 2 person deal…watch 16 and pregnant…you’ll see why I say that…and why that show endorses birth control.

If you met me and Xarex in real life you would wonder why the heck we spawned a small one. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. The small is is wicked smart, and seems to put a smile on my face everyday…even when he’s a terror and i swear he’s some sort of demon.

Wait, a member of the Denver Post, which I assume is a respected media outlet, seriously used the word “homer” in an article? That’s pretty homerish.
That’s a clean hit too. The Avs player got hit from directly in front of him. It’s his responsibility to keep his head up. Or did we not all watch the new rule video?
Check out Dater’s latest post. http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/
I laughed at first.. now I almost feel bad for ever letting these people get to me.
All he does is complain it seems.

Do the Avs have any beat writers that aren’t complete hacks?

LMAO
Who voted I’m dumb? And my ass, Blake’s had his up’s and down’s, but he’s still our Captain, and GO SHARKS GO!
Go Sharks!
i just dont see it.
was it ahard hit? well, yes. galiardi ends up on his ass.
but every guy in professional hockeys knows you put yourself at risk coming diagonal through the middle of the ice- especially in a playoff game.
avs writers just need something to chirp about, and most fans just need something to read between games.
voted homer. and moving on.

Nothing makes me love our players more
Than reading the Avs blog.
I’m starting to understand how Ducks fans feel.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I give you video evidence that this is legal
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Blindside-hits-and-you-The-NHL-video-primer?urn=nhl,230260
This is a long video about what hits are made illegal by the new rule.
After the 7 hits that are illegal are shown they show 11 hits that are completely legal.
The hit on Galiardi is almost exactly like what happens to Kessel, completely legal.
Again, watch this hit and compare it to Blake’s:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bov63RMMIUQ
I can’t see any different other than the puck left a half second before Galiardi got crushed. You can argue interference, but it’s a clean hit according to the NHL.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
clean hit
He had his head down so it was a bit lower than usual. The force of Blake’s hit to the chest drops his head down more. Then as he’s falling backwards, Blake’s upward follow-thru (because yes he was trying to take him off his skates) brushes by his head.
Point of contact, in the chest. No injury. No suspension.
Lets focus on to Game 3 now.
GO SHARKS

“What is making me and most Avs fans see red, however, is he seems targeting our young players,”
I think that was my favorite bit from the other writer. If we don’t go after young players that basically leaves us with Foote or Hejduk. At this point, You guys checked Milan for us and took him out.
Aside from being a visually popping hit, I don’t see what they are whining about. TJ popped right back up and was back skating no issue like it was nothing. Best hit reaction in the playoffs was from the Sutton Leopold hit. (Clean hit, had the arm tucked in and only extended after the hit was complete). Sutton was being drilled by a media guy in the locker room and it went something like
Reporter: “So you got your elbow up on Leopold?”
Sutton: “Are you an expert?”
Reporter: “Well…no”
Sutton: “So you’re NOT an expert?”
Reporter: “But I saw the replay..”
Sutton: “Oh..so you ARE an expert?”
and it went on like that a bit longer before the reporter kinda backed off in a “I feel like an idiot” sort of way.
Mr. Deter needs a reminder of Playoff Hockey. Stuff is called a bit more loose and the game gets physical. To quote Drew from a KNBR radio interview last off season…
