Sharks Gameday: Attack of the Comeback

@
6:30 PST
As we stated in our recap of game two, the course of the series was changed on Friday night. If the Sharks went into Colorado in a 2-0 hole, it was quite possible that the San Jose fan base would have collectively locked themselves away in a closet and rocked back and fourth in the fetal position until Will Wrenn was old enough to have grandchildren.

As much as the Sharks fans expected that to happen, it didn't. Instead, the San Jose actually showed some of that red bloody thing that we've assumed they'd been missing for years. Five comebacks in one playoff game to win in overtime? Unheard of.
It might have happened before, but I can't seem to find any evidence of that exact sequence of events ever having in the regular season, let alone in the playoffs. According to Whowins.com, only 13 of 819 teams since 1939 have come back to win a game after going down a goal with 33 seconds or less left in the game. If you want to take anything superficial from this tilt, take solace in the fact that the Sharks never quit in a game where a crushing, demoralizing defeat looked to be the only possible outcome.
I think this is exactly what the Sharks needed; it was an effort by the team that was not only motivating, but unexpected. Yes, there were issues; Nabokov had a terrible game, Murray was almost directly responsible for two of the goals, and the big three still hasn't contributed a goal.
However, the Sharks really did play a good game, save for the five Avalanche goals. The trap was no longer as effective, and the match really could have been worse for Colorado: Nabokov should have had the last two goals, and the goaltender interference call on Setoguchi was close to criminal (at least in my humble opinion). Add in a few hit posts, and that one could have been pretty ugly. The neutral zone trap employed by Joe Sacco was deftly solved by Todd McLellan and broken by the drive of his players. What will the young Sacco do to stop the Sharks now? We'll find out tomorrow, but I'm guessing that the game will be a bit more open in Colorado. The Av's won't be near as conservative.
The Sharks should have little trouble getting up Sunday; they fought their way back admirably in the game and the series. They join every other team (sans Chicago and Nashville, who haven't played their second game yet) looking at a series tied 1-1.
There is also some pretty significant buzz surrounding tomorrow's showdown. Rob Blake's hit on T.J. Galiardi is being analyzed by pretty much anyone following the series... views on the correct repercussions for the hit are about as far apart as Ke$ha is from a Nobel Prize in astrophysics. In my opinion, the hit wasn't suspension worthy... but switch my Logan Couture jersey for a Matt Duchene sweater and my view might change a little.
I think the Sharks roll tonight, and the big three gets in on the goal scoring act. Demers, who has flown under the radar and played very well, should continue to have a sharp series. He'll get noticed eventually.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Heatley, Thornton, Marleau and Vlasic. Every Sharks goal is scored on a weird tip or bounce. Someone tries to run Blake early.
Go Sharks.

If Avs fans are really crying about the Blake hit on TJ...
Try being Pens fan after that hit on Leopold… Blake’s hit was nothing compared to that one! Get over it!
Go Sharks!!!
I think that you guys hear so much about our ‘crying’ because you guys post so much about it. I’ve tried my best to keep in good standing here, so I hope you’ll honor my opinion on the matter. I haven’t heard nearly as much as you guys are making it out to be, aside from the Dater’s article in the DP, but we all consider him an idiot, and most of the time, unreadable. Over at MHH, there hasn’t been a single fan post on the subject, and we didn’t have a front page article on it either.
Anyway, it’s nearly 3 a.m. here, and I probably shouldn’t post this, as I’m probably not making much sense right now, and I’m a lil drunk. Hopefully you see that we’ve pretty much gotten over it already.

I don't know what Avs blogs you're reading but...
Read any comment thread on MHH since the hit occured. If they’re not whining about the hit by Blake, they’re whining about the refs calling Foote for knocking Ortmeyer into the net, then knocking the net off of it’s moorings. There is a fanpost about that one.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
And I’m not exactly sure (m)any of the reputable MHH’ers (don’t want to put any words in any mouthes here, ‘cept my own) would argue that the Footer penalty wasn’t so much a penalty, as how bipolar the ref’s were in calling that game. We can all agree the refereeing we’ve see in the past too games has been awful, yes? They needed a working game plan more than the Sharks in game one and the Avs in game two. If you’re gonna call pretty, for lack of a better word, trivial stuff, then by all means call it, but call ALL of it. If not, and you believe because you’re calling a playoff game, and there should be more hard hitting, more shoving, and more game flow, then let the players play. But please, please, please, no more of this OMGICAN’TMAKEUPMYMIND we’ve seen from the refs the past two games.

Hell, how many times has Michalek alone been lit up in the playoffs over the years?
We’re use to being on the other end of this crap, isn’t it nice to be the ones dishing it out for a damn change?

It is, and the playoffs are a physical, bruising stretch.
However, I feel like everyone got suspension happy this year… it seems like almost any hard hit is immediately looked at for disciplinary action by the fans.

The annoying bit is as soon as a players head is touched they immediately bring up that new rule.
The problem is that rule specifically applies to blindside hits to the head. Blake skated strait into him, maybe an interference call, but certainly not a suspension.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I would agree with this sentiment. I personally don’t think it warrents a suspension, unlike our local beat hack writer, Dater (maybe you’ve heard of him). I do however think that if you don’t call that hit an interference or possibly roughing, then there should also be no interference called on Footer. However, this is old news, probably best left alone, and the game is over. New game tonight, and we’ll all see how it plays out, so we can all debate in our little armchair GM/Coach/Ref self-appointed positions. Ain’t the playoffs fun I for one am lovin every minute of it!! :)

Wilson’s got a pretty big hit. He may not look like at first glance, but according to Elias, (who insisted the one on him was totally clean) it feels like you’re getting hit by a truck when he nails you…hence his nickname Mack truck. I know Blake’s big and I doubt he’ll go over this easily, but if Wilson takes him the right way and unexpectedly, he’ll go down. David/Goliath and all. (At least I hope he will…lol…) Here’s a video that has some of his hits (and other stuff highlighting our young guys) if you’re interested….go to minute mark 3:23 (cuz I know you prob don’t want to watch thru a whole vid of our guys…lol).
I don’t know if Blake’s trying to hurt our guys, if he’s frustrated, or if he’s just timing his hits poorly, but he’s hurting them nonetheless. It saddens me cuz he never used to be like that and I always really liked the guy. In the end, I just want the games called evenly, ya know? I don’t want everything called, I don’t think suspensions should be handed out. Playoff hockey, let them play. Just make it even. Ya know?
Anyway, should be a good game tonight and with every bit of respect in my bones, I hope your boys lose and do so badly. ;- ) (you know I HAVE to say that!!)

well said-
and i think blakes problem is he has lost a step, and the quickness of some of your forwards is getting him there a second too late on occasion. the “kneeing” was just a hipcheck a second too late.
combine the slowness of captian hook (our loving name for blakey) and his desire to play a little harder on your smaller top guys, well, you get the picture.
as a sharks fan though, it is nice to see our guys instigating the hard play, rather than reacting (or not even reacting….) to being destroyed physically.

While I don’t see us taking a run at Blake, I see the game as a whole getting a LOT more chippy. It will be interesting to see who Sacco puts in Porters spot. If Koci or Durno is in the lineup, Fight Club time it is. If it’s Stoa (which it will be), then it’s game on play continues. If it’s Svatos then I have NO freaking clue what is going on and we’ve just given up.

So..
I wasted a bunch of brain cells and read Kawikami’s blog post… My favorite part was oddly enough a Marleau response:
-Q: Does it matter that the top line didn’t score?
-MARLEAU: Blakey scored when we were out there. And we were on for the last goal, Pavelski. Did you watch the game?

That piece was very annoying.
It has only been two games are people are complaining about their lack of scoring goals!? Give them time for crying out loud! I posted a comment on that article essentially saying that even elite players go consecutive games without scoring (shocker!). It happened to Marleau and Heatley many times this season. I don’t think it’s lack of trying, but they are trying too hard. It’s the damn playoffs, and of course they want to score! I really think they are over-thinking things (Patty and Heater).
I think people need to try a little patience and give them the time they deserve. They will eventually score! But complaining about that after only two games? That’s a little ridiculous to me.
i'd say the first line has been pretty disappointing thus far
but I’m glad the other lines have been stepping it up

id agree with you on heater
the guy is pushing a bit too hard, and has sawdust falling from his gloves.
marleau though, i dont know. theres something else going on there. i would lean toward an injury, probably an upper body one, back or something. he has no explosion like he had earlier in the season, and when he carries the puck he goes in one direction, and is far too concerned with avoiding contact. defensively he is fine positionally but has made some egregious (and uncharacteristic ) choices to not play the body- a few times leading directly to goals. there is more than something mental going on there, and it sucks.

woot sauce
My prayers were heeded — the curse broken, the time of the shark cometh.
Amidst all the post game 1 apocalyptic groanings, it seemed that every in depth conversation I had about what the problem was boiled down to the individual level and the pattern we’ve all seen repeated time and time again like Sisyphus and his bolder — the inevitable vicious loop of.. well.. let’s call it inhibition for short.. always looming in the rafters ready to bring the sharks fan the all-too-familiar draining feeling of being frustrated and disappointed with those boys he loves oh so much (no homo.. well.. except for boyle maybe).
And then came game 2, and the sun broke the clouds babyyy! At that point I celebrated.. I probably woke half the neighborhood up screaming and dancing and throwing chairs across my living-room while my Avs-fan-housemate sulked and watched on with a mix of amusement and disdain. Why was I so happy? Sure the sharks won a must-win game.. sure the sharks won period.. but what I was celebrating most was seeing that incredible playoff speed, that gritty effort deep into all our lines, seeing our team kick all the expectations and negative rep and all the other bullshit right in its crooked teeth and finally make a statement that this team can and will be a championship team and give it their 100%.
I think you hit it on the head TCY… snapping this pattern.. finally grinding out a full 60 minutes and then some with that desperate playoff hunger that demands the cup, and most of all overcoming deficit not once, but 5 times to win it in OT with incredible effort from all 4 lines? Unheard of indeed.
Our boys know what they have to do. Now it’ll be about focus and perseverance through to the end. The actualized and relentless team with all cylinders firing we saw in game 2 (though yes at certain times Nabby’s and a few others’ might have been a clogged with a little sludge.. nothin’ a jiffy lube can’t fix) is something uniquely ‘abnormal’ for the Sharks, and will only become the new norm if our boys don’t let up.
So boys… DON’T YOU LET UP.
Go Sharks!
Right there with you
I know I woke up my neighborhood, as me and my brother are screaming and high fiving and dancing around after Seto deflected that last one in. Great heart and determination shown by the Sharks (cept Nabby who needs to remember he’s a damn playoff goalie)

About the Blake hit
Watch this hit on Kessel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bov63RMMIUQ
The only difference is that Kessel definitely still had the puck, otherwise it’s an exact replica of the hit, complete with helmet snapping back (though Kessel knows how to strap his on properly).
That video was used by the NHL as an example of perfectly legal hits to the head in their video examples used to describe what the new rule does and doesn’t cover.

Yes, hopefully good Nabby comes out tonight…
Might be a little premature to say these are his last days in Teal. I think there’s really only two ways he’s not resigned. 1) We lose this round; or 2) we win all rounds we play in. Both of those could trigger a youth movement. Otherwise, I could see DW trying to keep the team patched together for yet another run…you know, if they get “close” but don’t quite close the deal…
Guess we’ll see. But I’m with you, he needs to not be awful, so we have a chance.

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
What Needs to Happen Tonight...
1. The Sharks’ offense needs to continue exactly what it did on Friday. They were unstoppable.
2. Nabby needs to be Cocky Nabby again and keep the Avs in their place.
3. Blake needs to come out with a sickle for a hockey stick and a grim reaper mask in the pregame warmups and say things in a deep, dark voice like “you’re next Duchene” and “the Blake Reaper cometh!”
If those first two things happen, this series is over really, really soon. If they don’t, well, it’ll be a battle.
And if the third thing happens, I will be wildly entertained…

But does anyone have the footage of CBC’s feed from Friday’s game on Thornton’s disallowed goal?

as with most major religious org’s (save for scientology, that shit is whack) the general membership is usually not too moronic. blaise pascal said “the heart wants what the heart wants”. and this is probably why so many otherwise rational minded and good people would follow a religion like mormonism with its ridiculous shading of history.

views on the correct repercussions for the hit are about as far apart as Ke$ha is from a Nobel Prize in astrophysics.
Perhaps these extremes are not as far apart as assumed:
“I was very studious,” [Ke$ha] says. “I was in the international baccalaureate program, I loved physics and math, and I was in the marching band. After practice, I would drive to Belmont [a college in Nashville] and listen to Cold War history classes; I just think it’s so interesting. I was really curious about a lot of things that are much deeper than partying and dancing.”
The above is from an interview on NPR, which also references her “near-perfect SAT scores”. I think I heard NPR host Scott Simon drooling.
Evidently, MHH has drank the Kool-Aid as well.
their write up consists of calling us cheap shot artists, refers to our dirty play, and how it’s the ref’s faults for not coddling Colorado’s players.
Ya got smacked, Denver. And it’s gonna happen again. If ya can’t stand the heat, well then. You know the rest.

when he comes back, saying he has a hurt shoulder, for example, basically says, “HEY, HIT MY SHOULDER!!!”. usually they say its an upper or lower body injury, at the most. they usually don’t give much more info, unless they think he’s out for the rest of the playoffs.

Heatly out? Thats good news for my Avs, who replaces him on your first line and is that person any good?
Avs fan in Sharks country: Please don't hit me....
Manny Malhotra moves up to the top
You’ll remember him, he scored in the first period in game 2.
We put a rookie in on line 4, good energy guy, not a danger with the puck, but then again, neither is Nichol and he got a goal…
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Ah, you know shake ups like this tend to hurt my Avs more then the teams whose best player is hurt. I don’t know why. This MAY be a spark for your 1st line.
Avs fan in Sharks country: Please don't hit me....
I'd argue that Thornton had a good game Friday
He was instrumental on 2 goals, including the game tying goal in the 3rd.
But Manny should introduce a lot of work ethic into that top line. The man never quits (must be the lack of socks… he’s a crazy bastard).

Also,
Our 3rd and 4th line has been shuffled with the injury to Porter. Stoa replaces him on the 3rd line. Stoa has some good hockey sense and has nice stick work, but he is slower then hell and this is his rookie year. That 3rd line could cause me headaches through this whole game as they are all pretty slow (the center Oreily is decent speed wise but Tucker??? Good god). The 4th line is now a checking line only, all of our grinders are on it (Mcleod, Yelle, and Hendricks).
Avs fan in Sharks country: Please don't hit me....
AND,
Stoa’s big. They picked him cuz they want to match up with the Sharks largessness (new word).
Avs fan in Sharks country: Please don't hit me....
Avs better start playing bigger
Or the Sharks will pummel them into nothing. They were already scared of contact in Game 2.
