Sharks lose a heart breaker in overtime as Avalanche take 2-1 series lead
At this point, there is nothing even left to say.
Stevie Wonder tuned in tonight from the comfort of his own home and could vividly describe each and every opportunity the Sharks put on net. Shot after shot rang off the armor of Craig Anderson, a man who has reached the peak of human performance.
Forces beyond San Jose's control have descended, coyly manipulating the direction of pucks, pushing bounces one way or the other. The official box scores, written by mortal men and women across the United States, will tell you Chris Stewart and Ryan O'Reilly have had a pair game-winning goals between them.
A demon from the depths of darkness will cackle maniacally and know that this is not the case.
The Sharks outshot the Avalanche 43-8 in the final three periods of play. They dominated the offensive zone, tirelessly worked the cycle. Pucks were directed at the net from the half wall, the slot, the blueline, the crease.
Everything a hockey team needs to do in order to win a game was done tonight. Impeccable execution up until the final minute.
It is gruesome to even attempt to understand what Dan Boyle is going through right now. This is a player who has logged heroic minutes for the Sharks throughout the course of this year, poured his heart out every single night, provided stability and results for a defensive unit that would not have survived the rigors of an 82-game year without his services.
And as the crows and buzzards descend upon him, picking at the carcass for their measly portion of the pie, Boyle collects his thoughts and readies his blade.
- Colorado has taken more of a physical pounding than a guy who tries to take a hockey stick from Mike Vallely at Honda Center, and with the way things went tonight, you have to figure those bumps and bruises are going to play a factor down the line. The willingness to finish checks that the Sharks have displayed over the last three games should help to neutralize some of Colorado's speed from their already depleted forward group.
- More rubber was tossed around than Sigma Chi's annual year end bash-- Anderson was out of this world tonight. A career performance. The workload he has seen in the last two games, as well as the amount of blocked shots Colorado has had to deal with, should theoretically make for a physically tired group of players wearing the home jerseys on Tuesday.
- How that stacks up against the mental fatigue San Jose is feeling? I have no idea. Storyline for game four to be certain.
- Every line looked wonderful tonight, but the Sharks are still waiting for Patrick Marleau to get on his horse and put a puck in the back of the net. This team needs a sixty minute performance from it's former Captain, and they just aren't getting it right now.
- Not having Dany Heatley out there hurts.
- The defensive end of the ice was about as flawless as they come tonight, but one thing the Avalanche do well is carry and drive the net hard from the end line beside Nabokov. The Sharks defenseman need to do a better job sealing the puck carrier along the boards, because if the bounces are going to continue to go Colorado's way, those are the plays where it is going to happen.
- The Sharks did a great job of trying to generate opportunities for every angle-- when the point shot wasn't working they worked it down low. When passes from behind the net weren't connecting they threw pucks from the sideboards and looked for a scoring chance off a rebound. Taking a page out of the Avalanche playbook might be prudent here however-- drive to the net hard from the end line and create some mayhem in front of Anderson.
- San Jose could also have been stronger with their sticks in front of the net. The Avalanche defenseman did a good job of blocking out the Sharks forwards and limiting second chance opportunities. That, and more traffic, will be the key to success if the Avalanche goaltender turns in another performance such as this one.
- In all seriousness however, Anderson could have stopped a bullet tonight. Nine times out of ten these minor adjustments aren't needed throughout the course of a game. It just turns out that tonight was one where they could have used them.
- Rob Blake received the Pronger treatment from the Pepsi Center just as we ruminated about earlier. Unverified sources report that a conglomerate of Avalanche fans held a practice session for the festivities by booing players at a local Bingo Hall Saturday night.
- Milan Hejduk was injured after colliding with Colorado centerman Paul Stastny in the first period. Calls for suspension of Stastny's shoulder pads will be promptly filed with the league office Monday morning.
- Devin Setoguchi will be nominated for an Oscar following his marvelous performance after being run from behind by T.J. Galiardi on an icing call that resulted in a San Jose power play at the end of the third period. He was selling it John.
- Sharks fans across the nation hop on Youtube to upload videos entitled "Leave Danny Alone!"
- Hardest loss to take in a long, long, long, long, long, long...you get the point.
Biggest game of the your life Tuesday night.
God save us all.
Go Sharks.

Well said
Good points, all of them. The fact that you are thinking clearly right now is some kind of miracle. I think that if this becomes a 7-game war of attrition, the Sharks will win. I just wish that war didn’t have to happen in the first round.
I don't know
I’m still on the camp that believes the puck came of O’Reilly’s stick, or at least it hit Boyle’s stick. But still, a horrible way to go down.
Either way, I don’t know if it really matters. My soul feels like it was stolen from me by Santa Claus.

I just remembered now
That I thought Logan Couture played his best game of the playoffs yet. Did a great job in the 3rd period to draw one of the penalties on the Avs; if there were any justice in the world he would have notched the game winner subsequently. Obviously “justice” is a figment of our imaginations as humans.
he just played great.

Wish i could have...
It was a shitty fluke especially to my favorite guy on the ice, but I try to keep reminding myself that the sharks have 1 goal scored either from or off one of our players in each game. You subtract those goals from each game and this series looks quite a bit different. Our intensity is their, our skill is there, but now we just need the Hockey Gods or whatever you want to call it to have a freaking lucky bounce go our way for a change. Throw us a freakin bone!!
We’ll smash pound them tomorrow… I’m sure of it. Look how they came out at game 2 after that loss!
As Plank said there’s no way Anderson can play that way every game, and the amount of pressure and physicality of these games will start to show, IMO.

Yeah I’ve been sayin to my friends that even though the Pavs Clowe Seto line is dominating, they should put Seto with Thornton because Thornton’s playing great imo. It sucks that even though Thornton is playing really well, he won’t get recognized for it because Marleau is playing so poorly. I say put Seto with Thornton and Heatley; and put Marleau on the third line with Couture until he wakes up and starts playing like we all know he can, he can handle it.
Definitely
I agree 100%. it’s unfortunate that thornton is getting shafted by the media because of this. i think getting heatley back will help, and then throw gooch up there (who definitely has been playing fantastic lately) and we’re set…

The big problem
Patrick Marleau is not actually invisible. He is quite visible. Visibly terrible. I haven’t seen him fan on this many shots all season. Now he fans on what seems like 3 shots per game. He’s been overskating passes and fanning shots all series. I think his past playoff ineptitude is haunting him. He seems scared and his performance shows it

Trying to hard
I think Patty’s gripping his stick to hard. He knows the pressure this time around. Even if he won’t admit it, I think its gotten to him a little and he needs to relax. He doesn’t have to carry the team this year, just has to produce something.

I am a big Marleau apologist but his play starts with his skating and he is like 70% speed straight ahead and is standing still the rest of the time. He looks physically decimated. You can see the strain on his face.
Anyone else notice him shaking his hand when the play is blown dead?

WTF?
How in the world did Anderson find time to meet with Hiller and steal his unstoppable-of the charts-not the 5 hole, not top shelf, not anywhere – wanna shoot a bullet at me? Watch it clang off the post cause I have an invisible shield – superhuman playoff powers?
WHEN we grind out and win this series, this will only help us win the cup. If we can overcome superhuman goalies, we can overcome anything!

wait wait wait, I figured it out!
This just happened here in Iowa only a few days ago…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR2uNajroOM
My sources tell me this was no meteor but in fact a substance similar to what we know as “kryptonite.” A piece or two were obtained by Avalanche scientists (at a big cost) and were flown to Colorado immediately. In the few days since the phenomenon, they were able to liquify the rocks and put it in Anderson’s gatorade bottle just moments before the puck dropped last night. This explains everything!
The good news? There was only enough for one game! Anderson will return to form as a tier 2 goalie on Tuesday and all will be right in the world of hockey

I reckon Marleau sometimes wishes he had chosen to play goalie. Looking at his expressions in between play, I keep expecting him to skate towards the bench and pull an Olympic Kiprusoff on himself. If its not a physical problem, then the COACH Todd needs to figure out pronto how to help Patty get mentally past this. {Disclaimer: The Randy Hahn Bitch Rule is still in effect until 9:30 am pst.}

The worst part
was waking up hungover this morning, not quite remembering the events of the previous night, but with a thinly veiled, deep-seated feeling of something being terribly, terribly wrong. Vaguely remembering what MUST have been a nightmare about the end of the game last night. Shrugging it off and getting ready for work, driving to work, unable to shake that feeling of disquiet.
Then sitting down at my desk, firing up firefox, fearthefin coming up, and suddenly it all coming back in a terrible, agonizing rush. Choking back tears as the dude in the office next to me asks me about my weekend while loudly slurping his big gulp sized mug of coffee. Trying not to punch him in the face him as he stares at where I’ve written “Go Sharks” on my white board and stupidly asks, “What’s go sharks?”
Worst. Monday. Ever.

Take it as a loss and move on. I hope the team takes last nights game and deploys a rally cry in honor of Danny Boyle, and Nabokov, that will haunt the Avs until October comes calling. Of course it was horrific to watch. But seeing the look on Danny Boyles face during the post-game you could tell he kept running that “pass” through his head. It was one of those unbelievable turn of events that not in our darkest hockey nitemares we want to see ever again. Our current roster has the talent to overcome, lets hope they put forth an equal effort tomorrow night with added points from HTML.
I hope members of the first line are taking a deep look at themselves and are planning on putting all their physical and mental energies to extract revenge and justice for Danny Boyle with a game 4 win and an eventual series win. They know they need to. They have to contribute to putting some points up if we are going to break out of this series. Lets get one back for Danny and get a solid win for our guys. I’m hoping we can exploit the Avs depleted forwards and see them break Anderson in game four. Our guys know they are the better team, and have to shove their “will to win” down the Avs’ collective throats with a solid win.
LETS GO SHARKS!!!
I agree
Andy could have stopped a bullet..LAST NIGHT
I don’t like the fact that Thornton looked like the monster he can be during the regular season. We do not have the d-corp to handle him if he plays like that. We neutralized him in the first two games, and Andy did it last game, but he looks awakened.
That scares the every loving shit out of me.
Avalanche 2009-2010: We'll beat the refs and the Sharks. We do not care.
To build on what someone posted earlier about Couture, I thought the work along the boards by the entire forward corps was some of the best I’ve ever seen. The Avs had no answer for our stellar low cycle for the majority of the game. Clowe, Couture, and Mitchell in particular played out of their minds. There were so many positives last night, which makes the end result of course even more frustrating. Nevertheless, if they can replicate the effort of last night tomorrow, it’s not a matter of if but when Anderson starts giving up goals.
..:Fear The Fin:..
2/3
of the game looked like a powerplay
Avs had no answer over the last 5 periods
the nice thing is the sharks have had enough weird/bad luck to last for the whole post season – so we can expect some good breaks going forward

This, I think, will be key. If the Sharks score the first goal in game 4, it could very well turn the rest of this series into a blowout. If the Avs squeek the first one in, or the Sharks are still scoreless in the 2nd or 3rd period, well, it could get mighty tense on that bench.

Visited WIkipedia today – the articles for Boyle, Nabby and the team itself are all semi-protected (for those non familiar with Wiki lingo, that means anybody who doesn’t have a Wiki account can’t edit them). It’s ridiculous.
Playoff goaltending
What’s with the Sharks drawing the unheralded rookie goaltenders from hell in the first round? This reeks too much of last year. The Sharks mental toughness is being called out now and they will either overcome or start looking for realtor’s for the impending roster explosion in the off season.
There was not much the Sharks did not do last night, even having Heater out of the line up was a blessing in disguise. Putting Ortmeyer on the first line is exactly what we needed, although I would have actually put Nichol there instead. The problem with the HTML is that they do not have the gumption to go to the dirty areas for the puck. The Ave’s are a group of young guys that have no fear, no pressure, and nothing to lose. They will drive to the corner nose first for a loose puck, they will sacrifice the body to block shots and they will take the raping in front of our net. If we get the Heater back for game 4, Heater, Thornton and Nichol on the first line, Ortmeyer, Patty and Seto on the second, etc..etc…
If the Sharks are to ever find any success in these playoffs they are going to have to get used to the idea that they are going to have to score ugly goals. Get thier big bodies to drive the net, and take the punishment for those chances. Get under Anderson’s skin a little bit, he looks way too calm and confident. We’re the Sharks for Christ sake, goalies are supposed to fear us! I’d like to see the stat on how many shots the Sharks put into Anderson’s logo last night. As a goalie for many years, I’d take 50 shots from the point a night if I can just avoid 1 cross-ice one timer or guys throwing it to the crease from any angle.
Magic Joe
good point on the kinds of shots.
Sharks have had 3 slam dunk, cross ice, point blank shots blown for sure. Soon one goes in though!
I can’t remember the last time Jumbo hit someone for a pretty goal. Seems like its been ages…

kinda
but it seems like there were a couple of chances like that per game years past. The powerplay used to be predictable because he would sit on the boards with the puck and hit guys in the slot (cheeeeechoo). Maybe teams have just adjusted and are taking away his game a bit. he certainly looked better last night and they did have some of that tic-tac-toe-andersonsave kind of passing on the powerplay.

I just had to laugh
Out of everyone possible, Danny Boyle, slipped one past Nabby. My friend and I watched it numerous times to see if it hit the stick of the forechecker, and we couldn’t come to the conclusion that it did but …wow, it was a great shot.
Shit happens, sucks that it happened to a great player and a terrible time.
It’s just a game and we aren’t playing it, I just hope they know that we are behind them 100%, even if they are smoking shots past their own goalie.

Why are the writers all about the Sharks “choking” (besides the DB Goal thing) and there’s little to nothing about the hottest team going into the playoffs (Detroit) down 2-1 in the series against the forgotten Coyotes?

Anyone else as confident as me?
I actually think I have never been more confident in the Sharks.
The bottom lines are doing exactly what they are supposed to and Nabby showed he could blank the Avs especially laying an egg in game 2.
Their effort is great. They are more physical than expected. The offseason pickups are golden. If they execute on dump-ins and catch any breaks, they should roll from here.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
There is no possible way I can actually be confident in a team down 2-1, playing on the road for game 4. yes, the Sharks have looked good. But it really hasn’t translated to a whole hell of a lot. And statistically, the odds are way against us now. I’ll feel confident again if they can win 2 in a row…until then, I’m going to be on pins and needles, because there is literally no room for error anymore…

Positivity my friend!
See below.
You’ve always accentuated the positive when I’m feeling piss-poor about a game – time for us to trade roles.
Fear The Fin = Man goes into cage... Cage goes into salsa... Shark's in the salsa... Our shark.
Making things hard on themselves
I agree, as usual.
More than “choking,” the Sharks just make things hard on themselves. Last night’s game is the apotheosis of it.
Dominate the game, but don’t break through, then lose on a fluke. The Sharks were guilty of shooting into Anderson’s torso for a lot of those shots, and missing the net when they had him beat, or an open-look. Plus they squandered a good performance by Nabby by getting shut out.
If you’re the Avs, you’re loving this. You’re leading the series thanks to a deflection and a gift from Zeus. If the Sharks can regroup, and continue to force Colorado to play their style of game, they can even the series and make this game a footnote. If the Avs rally around their good fortune, Boyle’s play could be a heartbreaker for the ages.
So, which one is it going to be, Sharks?
People rely way too much on statistics.
Statistically of course it’s not going to be in favor of us. But statistically, the 75% of teams that lost after trailing in game 3 didn’t play like the Sharks did last night, didn’t have THAT goal being the reason for the loss. Statistics are incredibly general and don’t look at the meaningful details. The odds are in NO way against us. In fact, they’ve been for us this entire time, and if they keep playing as the Sharks have been they will continue to be. It’s just so happened that we’ve happened to suffer the statistically unlikely fate so far (ie, the 3 “unlucky” goals by the Avs).
Drew: Fill in the blank: "When I'm on the ice with Douglas Murray, I..."
Nabby: Poop yourself.
The meaningful details like how the Sharks have actually yet to lead any game this series during the game (save for one hypothetical second at the end of OT in game 2). Like how Craig Anderson has faced 50+ shots in each of the last two games and we’ve still gone to OT each time. Those are pretty meaningful details.
Look, I’m not saying the Sharks cannot come back and still win the series. And, dammit, I really hope they do, because the Avs are a joke. But I cannot overlook the hole they have dug themselves. They’re basically in a position where they HAVE TO win two games in a row. Never an easy task, and never a situation you want to put yourself in.
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

Yes, the position they are in right now is not ideal.
But you can not be intimidated by prior statistics. I guarantee most of the 75% of teams who won after winning 2 by game 3 were outplaying their opposition. Of course a statistic is going to come with the result “A team that wins more is more likely to win more in the future.” That’s essentially what that stat is saying, and often it rings true. But I believe the situation the Sharks are in is a special case. Avs haven’t dominated in any way (aside from Anderson in game 3). Two game winning goals have been deemed “flukes.”
I agree completely that the situation is not ideal and that they do have to win 2 games in a row, and obviously if they had won game 3 there would be less pressure on them. But I am not buying the pressure coming from any of the statistics people have been pulling out.
Drew: Fill in the blank: "When I'm on the ice with Douglas Murray, I..."
Nabby: Poop yourself.
As horrible as it was
I think this will be a rally point for the Sharks. I hope, and I pray, that they will come out tomorrow night with guns blazing. I hope after tomorrow night the Avs, and especially Anderson, won’t know what hit them, and they will live in mortal fear for the rest of the series.
GO SHARKS!!!

Confidence and Positivity
will help us prevail. That’s the best I’ve ever seen them play cumulatively. I know I bitched at Marleau right after he skated past the puck and got us the icing call but as I always said to everyone on my FB, We can lose its fine, because we can’t win everything….but if we lose working hard I’m still proud as a clam of my boys. It was just a little frustrating to have a billion SOG and no goals…and I took it out on Patty in a fit of rage.
What happened last night, I reiterate, was just an unfortunate fluke that didn’t fly in our favor; we scored on ourselves that’s all…If we keep playing like this we will win the series for sure! I’m just giving my 2 cents is all I’m not saying anyone should behave one way or another. We can do this! We will do this! Regardless of the outcome we will be back for more each and every time.
GO SHARKS!!! Go on to Game 4 and kick some ASS!!! Oh and Wallin…can you freight train Anderson? Thanks! Love ya Hamburgers!

It's our series to win, or lose
The avs havn’t scored a game winning goal yet, in all honesty they havn’t won a game yet. they’re riding off of mistakes, minimize the flukes, and we sweep the rest of the series.

Very true, and i think this is a good series to make these adjustments. Colorado really isnt that great of a team, so i’d rather the sharks have the chance to make adjustments against them, and not a team that will completely rip us apart…

Anyone else...
think the sharks need to start shooting high on Anderson?
The guy stood on his head, but from I’m watching a huge majority of their shots last night were low. The guy has great reflexes with his legs but I don’t think there’s a way he makes that many saves if half those shots are toward the top of the net.
What do you guys think?
I like my coffee like I like Jumbo Jim's beard... thick.
Well, yeah, that’s an adjustment they should have made early on in the second period…Anderson is huge down low. You have to elevate pucks to beat him. It’s the only way.

I think they started shooting low because they were shooting for rebounds. Everything they shot up high wound up in his chest or glove and ended the play.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Regarding rebounds, I noticed they’d hit Anderson and deflect up in the air (rather than deflect straight out, near the ice) – making it difficult for the Sharks to regain control. I’m not terribly goalie savvy so I’m not sure if that’s by design, a result of his quick butterfly style, and/or an issue with the Sharks shooting.
It was frustrating to watch the Sharks rip a shot toward Anderson resulting in a rebound deflected up into the air amid a flurry of flying sticks and then land right in front of an Avalanche player to skate out.
It’s like “OOOOh come ON!”

They went everywhere
Their defense did a good job at preventing us from getting 2nd or 3rd chances. This is the only thing their defense did well all night.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Some of that is just terrible, terrible luck. But some of it, I think, was the Sharks failing to change things a bit. If Anderson is consistantly kicking rebounds out past our guys in front of the net, then maybe you need to change it and have one person on the goalie, and one person a few feet off, waiting for the big kick out. Then we’d have the puck, and a screen already set up.
Who knows. At this point, I’m really just grasping at straws.

Someone should be posted in this high slot. There were definitely a lot of those rebounds getting knocked up and over the Shark(s) standing near the crease.
I said during the game last night that I miss our Rocket Cheech. While holding the zone, he was always moving his feet – circling around the hashmarks and then driving toward the net to get open for a snipe.

Heatley’s pretty good about chilling in the slot in situations like this. Part of me thinks that if Heater is in the lineup in game 3, he finishes with 2 or 3 goals and we aren’t all depressed right now.
Of course, there’s no way of knowing if this is true or not. Just halfhearted speculation.

I said that last night.
During the game. And interestingly enough that was the question on Ask Randy and Drew…they said yes shooting high will help but Anderson just makes himself so big on his knees its hard to tell but essentially yes they should try to lift it. Anderson gobbled up rebounds last night, except for about ten minutes in the second where he began to kick things out into the slot. Like Evilducks said, the Sharks were looking for rebounds. They needed to be stronger on their sticks in front of the net if anything.

but another problem was they weren’t getting a solid shot away either. They got plenty to the goal, but not so much from a quality standpoint or where they could take advantage of Anderson playing so low. Lots of fanned passes & missed opportunities.

A lot of great points, except the “Seto selling it” bit. There was nothing he had to sell. The rule is you can’t finish a check on a guy on an icing play" automatic penalty. As easy for the refs to call as delay of games. Granted we saw two years ago in the Flames series they didn’t call it on the hit to Marleau. Thankfully the refs last night were calling the game somewhat reasonably for once, which is more than you can expect in your average Playoff game. The funny thing to me was Sacco’s press conference where he made it sound like the Avs were in the box the entire night. True, they killed off a decent amount of penalties (compared to the first two games anyway). Realistically though, they were just being dominated 5 on 5.
I think Plank was being semi-facetious about selling it… along the lines of “Avs fans will complain that Seto sold it.”

It's all good
As strange as this may sound, I’m not at all worried about this series anymore. The Sharks are soundly outplaying Colorado and deserve a better fate like 2 – 1. That said, this is not last years team of ineptitude. This team has determination, grit, sticktuativeness, and a resilient attitude. When we win tomorrow night, that will be it for the Avs. They will be demoralized and we will roll them back in SJ. Not saying it won’t go 7 games, but a game 7 in the Tank smells like victory to me. Bring on the Chum!
That’s the kicker though. Right now, the Sharks have outplayed the Avalanche for two games and walked away with a split. If Colorado has a good game from the other 19 players on the ice outside of Anderson it’s all up in the air.
Haven’t gotten the bounces, but the margin for error is now razor thin.

I’m actually in the same boat, here. And I think that’s why this last loss has hit me so hard (I’m still not over it). The Sharks have played two phenomenal games, and one shitty game. But now its being taken for granted that the Sharks are going to just continue being aweosme every game and the Avs are just going to suck? You have to win the games you are playing super well in. Because now, they pretty much have to win two in a row. There is no room for error, at all. One more loss before Game 6 is really a dagger that will lead to another playoff first round exit.
Can the Sharks win this series still? Absolutely. But it will take some flawless play, and the kind of luck we just haven’t been getting at all.

Factor in the mental fatigue of last night and it’s going to be rough. Imagine Dan Boyle handling the puck in the defensive end right now. He usually will wait out the forecheck to the last minute and pull the puck back before hitting an outlet pass. Imagine him trying to pinch in on a bang bang play in the offensive zone. He will usually just react to the play and not think. At this point, not sure where he ends up.
He’s either going to play out of his mind on Tuesday or have a pretty bad case of the yips where he’s thinking rather than reacting. Can’t blame him. Same goes for the entire team. They need a bounce or two, because I doubt Sacco allows his team to get run into the ground again. At least at the level of last night.
Long way of saying we’re on the same wavelength here.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I truly do believe
That this experience is really seasoning our boys. Through conquering one adversity after the other, these guys are seemingly overnight turning from that team of “lazy chokers” to hard working veterans. This is war!
Am I the only one that thinks Joe has been playing great?
I’ve seen him consistantly skate hard. He hasn’t made dumb weak turnovers that we were harping on towards the end of the series. He’s been a beast along the boards, I can’t think of a single time they’ve muscled him off a puck. He’s made some great passes that guys just can’t bury for some reason.
I know the second line is playing crazy good, but why all this hate I keep seeing on Joe?
Marleau I completely get, but Joe had 2 key assists in game 2 and nobody had anything last night, so it’s not like his teammates out played him.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
The only thing you can rag on Joe Thornton about is lack of results on the scoreboard. He’s played very well.
Don’t see a lot of hate for Joe here. Then again, I haven’t been in the gamethreads or even looked through them.
"San Jose is where I want to be at the end of the day, and there's an opportunity now to make it there. It is where my heart is." - Jamie McGinn, 2/22/10
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
nope
I agree. I usually criticize Joe and think Marleau is a stud. Right now Patty is a shadow and Joe is asserting himself.
Problem for Joe is A: Sharks are losing
B: he has a reputation, fair or not
C: he is being held to the standard of other stars like Crosby and Ovie who are managing to put up points
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
Joe’s been awesome. He’s been hurt by having slumping forwards with him. Hopefully they keep Seto on his line in Game 4, even if Heater comes back. Slide Marleau down to another line. Give Joe a chance to feed the puck to people who are finding the back of the net.
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.
by ZeroIndulgence on Apr 19, 2010 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I was thinking last night that marleau should really be down 2 lines. if the guy isn’t producing because he is hurt, give him some easier competition. if he isn’t producing cause he’s lazy (doubt it) it could be a kickstart. And if you want to send a message to the fans (that tune in to the playoffs, scream the loudest and disappear) then by demoting him now you set the table to dump him later.
I love captain patty so I think he is hurt and needs the easier competition so he can contribute a bit but love is blind.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
…so it’s not like his teammates out played him.
Just playing devil’s advocate here, but is this a case of our love for Joe and low expectations in the playoffs? He’s usually considered one of the top 5 centers in the league, and is usually in the top 10 in scoring.
Given that, I expect more than “looks pretty good, and is working hard.” You know what I mean?
He pushes top 10 in scoring solely because of his assist numbers. How is he suppose to do that when his two top flight wingers can’t sink open net shots?
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
True dat. And I’m sick to death of analyzing why our scoring wingers can’t seem to score every spring.
Although when Joe drives the net, he can make good things happen (see Detroit game right before the Olympics).
He's definitely looked motivated
I think he’s just trying a little too hard. But i did notice that throughout the game last night. He seemed to have an extra jump in his step, which is definitely what we need from him.

I just read Dater's blog
Apparently he’s expecting us to call for Galiardi to have a suspension because he hit Seto on that icing play:
(Speaking of calls, I can’t wait to hear the Sharks tomorrow, and some of their electronic boosters in the media. Let’s see if they start carping about a suspension for TJ Galiardi, for his boarding hit on Devin Setoguchi. Guaranteed, if a Shark did that, it’s just a good, hard hit and a bad call on the boarding. That’s hockey, as they said after Rob Blake’s blatant punch to the face of Galiardi while leaving his feet in Game 2.
I believe we just called that a stupid play that was correctly whistled.
He did whine about the reffing in that game of course.

Anybody else listen to Drew on Gary Radnich this morning?
It was a great interview. His main points were this:
1. Joe’s played great.
2. Patty has been MIA
3. The Sharks have completely worn down the Avs physically at this point, and he expects the domination we saw in the last two periods to continue.
4. The Sharks need more bodies in front of the net.
5. Most important, he said this: Whenever there is a bad loss, the best way to gauge the players reaction is to ask the trainers and equipment managers. They reported to Drew, that nobody was down in the dumps and moping. Everyone seemed calm. Angry and frustrated, but not “woe is me”
Add that to the fact that Boyle was the first to talk to the media, I think the team gets over this loss quickly.

I'm not too worried
The avs came out young and excited, but this is a totally different game of hockey. It was obvious through the 2nd and 3rd periods yesterday that they’re worn out. I Agree with all of his points, A beatdown of avalanche proportions is due…(a really crappy, yet intended pun…)

Ideas.
Good game overall by the Sharks, and I agree about Marleau
I understand Seto missing the net as his accuracy is horrendous, but he still manages to score. Marleau is showing his speed but failing to score. WE NEED HEATLEY BACK AND FAST. I’m praying for a win in game 4. GO SHARKS
Go Sharks!
