Hi all, first post.
The headline says it all but, I am really confused as to why Ortmeyer hasn't gotten the play time that he's earned through his gutsy, relentless diligence all year long. I've been watching this team all season and in my mind, the three most important players to getting the Sharks in that sweet, dominant rhythm are, in order, 1.) Nichol, 2.) Vlasic and 3.) Ortmeyer.
I know it might seem silly to call three guys with limited offensive expectations the most important guys on the ice (save Nabby of course), but when Nichol and Ortmeyer are crashing into everybody, taking away time and space, getting to those loose pucks, with Vlasic exuding that mistake-free and almost robotic calmness and control, it seems to get everybody else to just loosen up and focus on what they do best. Up to this point even our top line has contributed relatively little, and knowing how much Orts usually brings night in-night out and did bring in Game 2, I can't imagine why Helminen (no offense meant) is getting time when we could have another lunatic on the ice tearing things up.
Don't we need speed to match up with Avs' speed? Aren't we trying to physically wear them down? Isn't that what Ortmeyer's game is all about? I seriously think that 3rd/4th line energy has won us a fair number of games this season and Orts is one guy that should get a lot of credit for it. I can only imagine that the coaches think that Mitchell and Malhotra are doing enough of a job to support Nichol in that style of play, but honestly, I don't see how another wild bruiser getting in the middle of the action would hurt. In fact, I think if we had a few more guys like that we could take away the Avs' resolve completely and dominate them like everybody expected we could.
If he's nursing an injury that we don't know about I would totally understand, but give Ortmeyer some credit. He's been a badass all year long and this seems like the perfect time to let him loose.
Just my two cents.
