Brian Boucher leads Flyers to victory; Western Conference knotted at two apiece

Boucher with the glove save-- a perennial classic.

As frustrating as Craig Anderson has been for the San Jose Sharks during this series, there's another goaltender out there creating his fair share of headaches as well.

And chances are, you still have a special place in your heart reserved for him.

Capping off a 4-1 series victory last night, Brian Boucher and the Philadelphia Flyers staged an upset over the second seeded New Jersey Devils to become the first team to advance to the 2010 Stanley Cup Conference semifinals. And while goal-scoring and tenacious team defense all played a big role in the victory, no one wearing the orange and white on Broadstreet made more of an impact than Boucher.

True to their reputation, the Flyers had no issues heading to the penalty box during the quick five game series, averaging 17.2 penalty minutes and taking 36 minors in the process. And yet they escaped with a 87.5 PK% thanks to some stalwart play between the pipes.

It was his first playoff game start in nearly a decade. He was below adequate during the regular season, posting a .900 SV% and raising the timeless question of whether Philadelphia has the goaltending to advance in the postseason.

Turns out, they did.

It was probably fitting that on a night when HP Pavilion debuted the orange crush playoff t-shirts, a former-Shark was crushing it in orange on the opposite coast. A .940 SV% throughout the series, all from a man who knows a thing or two about stringing together excellent five game streaks.

Good on you Boosh. I'll always remember the day you were signed by San Jose, and while I understand why you left, there's always a part of me that will follow that goofy faux Russian accent wherever it goes.

On to the second round, Comrade Boucher. Flyers in three.

Star-divide

  • As the Grim Reaper comes out to play on Saturday night in Colorado, another positive the Sharks can take into the game (as if they needed another) will be that every other Western Conference playoff series is knotted at two, and therefore, will go at least six games. If the good guys get the girl and wrap it up at the Pepsi Center, the Sharks will be the first team to advance to the second round in the West.
  • That being said, expect a battle Saturday night. Although Craig Anderson gave up four goals on Thursday, the last time he got blasted in HP Pavilion led to a 51 save performance resulting in an Avalanche win. Those chickens shouldn't even be let out of the coop for counting just yet.
  • Evgeni Nabokov has been stellar this postseason, and it looks as if the fears I had about him being overworked haven't manifested themselves at this point. He's currently sitting at a .913 SV%, and those numbers contain a helluva lot of noise-- a goal off Blake's skate, one off Vlasic's throat, and another from the stick of Dan Boyle/Ryan O'Reilly in overtime of game three. Toss in two terrible mistakes by Douglas Murray that led to goals in game two and you have a real nice postseason thus far from the Russian netminder.
  • Every time Sidney Crosby allegedly whines to the referees, fourteen people channel their inner "Crysby" and complain about it. Five goals, eight assists, thirteen points for The Kid. Best player in the NHL right now in my opinion, and one who's staking a claim to be one of the best ever in the history of the game.
  • On my Mother Theresa days I can understand the vitriol that gets expelled Crosby's way when it comes to media coverage, or at least attempt to understand it. At the end of the yoga session however, I always tend to look at it this way-- if the San Jose Sharks had a player who, all by the age of twenty two, provided a marketable face for the NHL after a nasty labor stoppage, came out in his rookie year and scored 102 points on a non-playoff team, won the Art Ross, the Hart, the Lester B., the Rocket Richard, was the youngest Captain to win a Stanley Cup, and scored the Gold medal game winning goal in overtime, wouldn't you be thrilled with the amount of coverage he was getting?
  • The refs have been atrocious this postseason, and I'm absolutely floored that the majority of discussion between the two fanbases hasn't been some expansive, in-depth argument about which team is getting the upper hand in officiating. The only thing more ridiculous, in this hypothetical situation, would be if all involved grudgingly admitted the outcome of games have not been affected.
  • Vancouver-Los Angeles has been an excellent series thus far, and one I've been able to catch the majority of in the West. The Kings power play has been humming along at a ridiculous 56.2%, but you have to figure the Nucks can eventually kill a penalty somewhere down the line. I think Vancouver eventually pulls it out in seven, but I'll be damned if I'm not rooting for the young Kings to stage an upset. A win tonight is all but essential to keep those hopes alive.
  • Predictions you can bank on-- LA is the class of the Pacific two years down the road. They're already a year ahead of schedule just by making the playoffs, not to mention two playoff wins ahead of schedule by keeping this series close. Hard to think of what Drew Doughty will look like in 2012. Dude could play in a cape and leopard leotards right now and probably be a top-five defenseman. In two seasons? I don't even want to know.
  • Haven't seen much of either CHI-NSH or DET-PHX, but I'm excited to watch the Yotes' take on the Wings tonight. Matt Lombardi is a freaking player, and Shane Doan is rumored to be getting back on the ice. Ilya Bryzgalov, your 2010 Hart Trophy winner, has had a solid postseason. Get it done, Pacific.
  • Speaking of defenseman, and I hate to bring this up, but who doesn't love Chris Pronger? I burned some bridges earlier this year already so might as well burn them again-- I love It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, I love cheesesteaks, and I love the Flyers. Claude Giroux has always been a favorite of mine and is having one helluva postseason, Simon Gagne may be injured but is always healthy in my heart, Mike Richards, Braydon Coburn, Ryan Parent, Ian Laperriere, Jeff Carter, Scott Hartnell (actually that guy sucks), Ray Emery, Ville Leino, Chris Pronger... just a sweet team. Gritty, physical, hated across the league. Hard not to root for the villain.
  • Hate to see Ryan Miller and the Sabres drop a thriller in overtime the other night to dig themselves into a 3-1 hole. Honestly can't believe Boston has managed to score goals considering their woeful output this season as well as the fact Marc Savard hasn't played, but what are you going to do. Maybe Buffalo blows it up and Craig Rivet gets traded back to San Jose. Just kidding. Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regeir will probably be buried underneath center ice at HSBC before that happens.
  • Biggest game of your life Saturday night. Pop a cold one on this glorious Friday, kick back, and watch some non-heart attack inducing playoff action. Nothing better than this time of year, and nothing better than the first round in terms of mass league-wide action.
  • Playoff hockey is heroin and mama I don't ever wanna get clean.

Go Sharks.

LA is here to compete for a while. With all the salary cap space, so is Phoenix who is one all-star player away from competing for the Cup.

I have no idea how the Ducks and the Stars will do next season, but Pacific is not going to be an easy division next year.

I’m cheering for all three Pacific teams to get to conf semi-final. That would be something wouldn’t it.

A lot of Anaheim’s success will probably center around whether Niedermayer, Selanne, and (by extension) Koivu come back. Sbisa is a really good young player to watch along with Bonino, but those big three might decide how well the team does.

Pacific is going to be nuts. Back to the glory days of three teams having close to 100 point seasons and duking it out all year long.

So damned happy for Boosh and the Flyers, and making up for their 3-1 chokejob against the Devils from over a decade ago. Wouldn’t mind seeing them in the Finals if they get that far.

Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regeir will probably be buried underneath center ice at HSBC before that happens.

That’s probably the only way those two are going to leave their positions. I’m surprised how much faith Buffalo’s various owners over the past 13 years have had in those two, and that’s a complement. Less-patient management would’ve had these guys canned years ago for some of the seasons the Sabres have gone through at times. Yet they continue to keep on chugging along in Western New York.

Chicago/Nashville has been ok

At times it reminds me of Sharks/Ducks…better team doesn’t show up to play and gets smoked by the team that wants it more. Thing is, Hawks don’t have the pressure that we had last year, and continue to have this year. When the Hawks turn it on, they’re almost unstoppable; a team I’d definitely not want to face down the line.

by Chicago Shark on Apr 23, 2010 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

I haven’t watched much of CHI/NSH, but scoring wise the games all seem pretty one sided with the teams trading off good nights. Maybe the play is a bit closer and it comes down to goaltending or a few mistakes?

About Colorado’s sense of entitlement – I think that can also be applied to the Chicago market this year, and accordingly, I’m rooting for Nashville. The fact that this is strategically the best option only adds weight to my decision.

Yeah, there seems to be a sense of entitlement

out here. Everyone saw that they went deep last year, and everyone expects them to win the Cup this year, just based on their performance last year. They’re like the nouveau riche: flush with talent and expecting doors to open for them without any work.

And to sevorak, it seems like it’s not so much goaltending as it is trading off nights. Niemi has been solid in their two wins, while Rinne was beastly in Nashville’s two wins. Game 3 was like Sharks/Ducks game 4, where the Hawks didn’t even show up to play, expecting the Preds to roll over after shutting them out the game before.

Hawks should step it up after last night’s game, or they’ll fall back and rest on their laurels prematurely again.

Boucher has been awesome!

It’s been really great to see him doing so well. After all this shit he had to endure this season, and seemingly no one wanting to give him a chance to start. To see him take out the Devils in that manner, well, it was definately well deserved. Sadly, his run will probably come to an end against Washington. But if he keeps playing well, it could be an interesting series.

On some of your other well made points…

Five goals, eight assists, thirteen points for The Kid. Best player in the NHL right now in my opinion, and one who’s staking a claim to be one of the best ever in the history of the game.

You knew I was going here. Sidney has 13 points through 5 games against Brian Elliott and the defenseless Senators. Alex Ovechkin has 8 points through 4 games against Jaroslav Halak, Carey Price, and a pretty good defensive team in the Habs. Sidney is playing well, granted. But it’s not as if he’s running away with this. OV has been just as good in my opinion, being as he’s had to face a real NHL goaltender and a team that seems to want to play defense in his first round series.

if the San Jose Sharks had a player who, all by the age of twenty two, provided a marketable face for the NHL after a nasty labor stoppage…was the youngest Captain to win a Stanley Cup, and scored the Gold medal game winning goal in overtime, wouldn’t you be thrilled with the amount of coverage he was getting?

So I ask you, if the Sharks had drafted Crosby, would he still be being marketed as the face of the league? I have a sneaking suspicion that the answer is no.

The Kings power play has been humming along at a ridiculous 56.2%

They scored on 6 straight power plays between OT of Game 2 and half way through Game 4. Unreal.

who doesn’t love Chris Pronger?

I’d kill to see him in Teal.

Get it done, Pacific.

The Pacific is scary good. The Stars and Ducks were the best 4th and 5th place teams in any division, and either or both could make the playoffs at any time. This division is going to be super competitive for the forseeable future. Which will make for some fun hockey, but also could be tough on the Sharks if they have to go through any sort of rebuilding once our UFAs all come up and we see where they are going. Either way, it should be some awesome hockey!

Anyways, I’m off to Yosemite for the weekend. Here’s to hoping the Sharks close out the series while I’m drunk off my ass on the Yosemite Valley floor! GO SHARKS!

I think he would have. Crosby’s hype train was already building long before Pittsburgh won the 2005 draft lottery – when no less an authority than Wayne Gretzky himself says that you’re the most likely candidate to break his scoring records, the hockey media is going to take notice regardless of who you get drafted to.

But, since he’s in SJ, he’s flown under the radar until these last Olympics. I bet when USA’s roster was announced, there were more than a few people out east saying, “Pavelski who?”

I don't really buy this argument

Crosby went to a team with an arena that was falling apart, an apathetic fanbase and management staff that was looking to sell the team and possibly move.

The NHL marketed the crap out of him, for good reason as it turns out. As much as it irritates me to say it, he’s really damn good.

Mario Lemieux also helped save the franchise. He deserves a lot of credit as well for buying the Pens in the first place.

Again though, never understood the Crosby hate. Dude’s world-class and the NHL is capitalizing on it. Good for them. Look at the national ratings for Pittsburgh games compared to other markets— they’re consistently higher.

When the dollar is the bottom line, I’m not sure you can really fault NBC for covering the Pens, and by extension, East Coast teams.

I blame Rangers and Philly fans for the Crosby hate.

Seriously, Crosby is hands down the most all around talented player there has ever been… I remember reading an article about him in SI when he was FOURTEEN about how he was going to be the next gretzky or super mario… about a year later, he pulled off that lift-the-puck-into-the-net maneuver and everyone then knew who he was.

Then he hit the league, and went to Pittsburgh. Philly and NY fans are notoriously aweful… and when they found reasons to call him a baby? They capitalized on it. Thus spreading hate thru the league for him.

But really. You cant hate him. He’s incredibly talented and any team in the league would LOVE to have him…

Heh, I figured as much. Praising Crosby in the slightest is always good to get a reaction out of you, especially as it pertains to Ovechkin.

Not sure I buy the argument that Crosby is getting a massive bump due to the “defenseless Senators”— they might not be as good as Montreal defensively, but as you have pointed out all season long, Pittsburgh is not nearly as good of a team as Washington is. I’d much rather play with Niklas Backstrom and Mike Green than Chris Kunitz and Sergei Gonchar for example.

Best player in the world will always be subjective, and we’ll never agree, but pointing to the opponent and stating that is why Player X has more points while ignoring his teammates seems like kind of a cop out.

So I ask you, if the Sharks had drafted Crosby, would he still be being marketed as the face of the league? I have a sneaking suspicion that the answer is no.

So the issue here is not with the type of media coverage that is being provided (one player who is promoted extensively), but the fact that it is not a San Jose Shark who is receiving that specific coverage (Couture, for example).

At the same time...

Pittsburgh also has a lot deeper team I feel… Malkin and Staal are also insanely talented scoring threats, and in so many ways, that team mirrors the sharks to me – least when it comes to the amount of stars and the strength of the 3rd and 4th lines.

I’d much rather structure my wings around 3 top line centres like Crosby, Malkin, and Staal than around Backstrom, Leich, and Morrison (backstrom is the only one at the other 3’s level IMO)

Fair point. Crosby has definately dragged Pitt through this round (as did Malkin, who’s starting to come alive and could spell doom for their Eastern opponents). But to use Crosby’s high point total this series as proof that he may end up being the best player ever to play, well, it calls for some rebuttal.

I should probably just come out and say this once and for all, so my OV defending and Crosby bashing is at least taken in the right context. OV was always the overlooked superstar, until he made people pay attention with his skill and gaudy numbers. Yes, that’s probably because he came from Russia and not Canada. But it also puts him behind the hype curve. These days its pretty much evened out, but back in the day when all this was going on, I fell in love with Ovechkin’s style of play, and still prefer it to this day…and because of that I feel he is the best player in the world and will always bring him up when people start talking that Crosby is the best. I can see how people can believe that, but I still feel the need to defend Ovechkin, even though he’s doing just fine in the hype department (old habits die hard, I guess).

The media fawning over Crosby has always been excessive, and also helps lend to the NHL’s east coast bias in a big way, which turns me off. I will agree that Crosby is a phenomenal player. Maybe just not as great as everyone says he is (or already assumes he is going to be).

Hopefully this made sense in some way. I know I’m late in responding, but I was spending the weekend in beautiful Yosemite Valley.

I love Vlasic, especially when he plays with a little edge to his game (obligatory Elvis reference to the Briere scrap). I think this past offseason he worked a lot on his defensive ability, and next year we will see a better offensive year for him.

For the majority of the year he played with a pylon in Rob Blake (pre-Olympics, at least), and had to drop back in defensive zone coverage so that pairing didn’t get burned. If the Sharks get an upgrade to play with him next season (Volchenkov!) I think we see his offensive abilities begin to increase.

But no jinxes or anything.

Even on the GWG in Game 1, I thought Vlasic was doing well. The reason Galliardi runs into Nabokov was because Vlasic put him down as Galliardi was going to the net. Love the edge he’s had this whole series. He’s jumping up in the play and everything!

It’s funny— Murray and Vlasic basically reversed roles from last postseason, where 44 was arguably our worst defenseman and 3 was our best. Shows you that certain teams can have a big effect on how players perform.

One of the reasons I’m a little concerned about Demers if San Jose advances to the second round and plays an overly physical team. I think Vlasic will be fine this season, but Demers tends to get bodied off the puck behind Nabby. Playing seven D might be in the cards again provided Orts and Wallin are still injured.

Whatevs. I’ll cross that bridge when/if the time comes.

Should be “provided Orts is still injured and Wallin is healthy.”

Right now I wouldn’t mess with the chemistry of the guys on the ice even with Wallin healthy. If we into a team with some real offense (like Detroit for example) in round 2 I’d much rather have Wallin out there than Demers. Zetterberg and Datsyuk would school that poor kid.

I think Helminen is a bit piece you can rotate out to accommodate Demers and come out with a net gain. I really like rolling four lines, but Demers brings soooo much to the power play and offensive side of the game. If Ortmeyer is out I still consider the seventh defenseman approach for that reason alone.

I was really hesitant

To continue the Demers experiment past game 3, especially with us down in the series. The Wallin injury really forced our hand, and it’s good that Demers is gaining some valuable ice time. I know Wallin isn’t exactly greased lightning, but he’s important in terms of eating up some minutes on the back end.

You’ve pointed out all along that we’ve gotten value from Kent Huskins, and that phrase is really key, “getting value.” We need that from everyone, but with the increasing level of competition, it will be harder and harder for Demers to provide that sort of value.

Huskins has been...

Great? I don’t even know what to call it, but he’s been worth his paycheck in this series.

Frankly, aside from game 1 when everybody was nervous and game 2 when Nabby had ‘issues.’ I’d be hard pressed to complain about anybody. Marleau was invisible but he wasn’t a detriment to the guys on the ice. He just wasn’t what we expect. Everybody else is playing great.

Heh, great is probably the right word for Huskins.

Agreed on everyone else being pretty good outside of Marleau through game three. Thornton is starting to get to me considering we are going to need results from him here in game six and beyond, as well as the fact I expect more out of him (“effort” needs to turn into “results” probably yesterday) but whatevs.

Hard to really complain about anything other than game one. The team has definitely asserted themselves.

Now Grier and Rivet need to step it up tonight and help out the American hero that is Miller.

The guy isn’t Anderson, he can’t singled handedly win games despite his team never scoring a goal. He needs some help.

Yes they do. It would be amazing if the Sabres could come back. Boston sports fans have had it way too good these past 8 years or so….a little heartbreak would do them some good.

The Kings

are going to sign Kovalchuk too. They’re going to be damn good.

Maybe...

I’m not real sure on that one.

They’re like the Blackhawks, they’re going to have to pay their youngsters at some point.

Do you think Kovalchuk’s potential contract took a hit by getting bounced in the first round?

by sharks in oc on Apr 23, 2010 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Meh

I don’t think so. I wasn’t expecting him to light it up in New Jersey like he did in Atlanta when he was the centerpiece of their team. His history of lighting the lamp will speak for itself while he collects his 10 million/year check.

by WiscoShark on Apr 23, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Both times he has been in the playoffs his teams have done terribly…

I think you are right though. Someone will take a fly on him for 10 mil. They may regret it though.

by sharks in oc on Apr 23, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with you guys— there is a GM out there he will give him a ton of cash, and they will likely regret it. He’s a phenomenal offensive guru but has his fair share of issues in the defensive end— probably not worth ten million dollars, and like Evilducks said, probably not something the Kings would be after.

I think Lombardi is playing his cards right by slowly easing into the transition. He’s already ahead of schedule right now and I don’t think he wants to commit nearly 1/6th of his cap to a player for ten years when he has a lot of young talent in need of raises down the line.

I think there may be a gap

Between the GMs who WANT to offer him a ton of cash, and the GMs who CAN offer him a ton of cash. Ottawa and Anaheim have reasonably cheap rosters for next season and might have room for him. Anyone else has to basically field a line of callups or cheap vets in order to get enough people to even field a team.

Anaheim is basically out— they have an internal cap of $50 M that they work with. If Niedermayer and Selanne walk, then maybe they can fit him in, but I don’t think it’s really in their best interest, or something Barstool Bob will want to do.

There will be someone out there who will offer him more than he is worth, I think. Whether or not he takes it or bolts for the KHL in pursuit of a bigger payday remains to be seen.

Dallas

I could definitely see them picking him up…

They are a bigger market than most of the teams with plenty of cap space (IE: bigger than Carolina, Phx, Colombus, and Florida) And yet they already have a strong team as it is. If Mike Modano goes, I could definitely see them having enough room to throw 8.5 or 9 million at him at least.

Nashville is in the same situation as Anaheim— don’t have the numbers to work with their internal cap.

Sather didn’t have room to offer Gaborik 7.5 at the end of the season last year and some how figured out a way, I have no doubt he can do it again.

He had to ship out contracts like mad though

Like I said, I think there’s a ton of teams out there that WANT him, but in order to get him, they’d need to flip a lot of contracts, which means other, shrewder teams, would have to take on other bad contracts. I don’t see any other Bob Gaineys taking on Scott Gomezs from Glen Sathers.

But then again, what do I know…

It’s definitely a fair point though— Kovalchuk will probably not be able to get the $10M per he is rumored to have turned down from Atlanta due to market factors.

Then again, like you implied, don’t rule out the foolhardiness of NHL GM’s. They don’t do a very good job of keeping themselves on a leash.

I was 100% sure Sather wouldn’t be able to unload guys like Gomez. He could probably find a take for Drury out there somewhere depending on what he packaged up with him to make room for Kovy, he could also just eat Reddens contract and send him to the minors, no loss there.

There are ways.
