First round series in the books, second round opponent yet to be determined.

Certainly less stressful than the third period of game six Sunday night, but it's definitely no walk in the park.

With Vancouver's 4-2 win over Los Angeles last night the remaining pool of teams have been whittled down to Phoenix, Detroit, and Nashville. All come with varied skill sets and mystique surrounding them-- Detroit's historic dominance over the Western Conference, Phoenix's feel good story after going through an ugly relocation circus this summer, and Nashville's blue collar approach to winning hockey games with a never say die pack mentality.

Detroit is Detroit. Book closed, statistics supplied, the tale we have told thousands of time before. Easily the most intimidating opponent out of available three, and a team that has given San Jose a lot of issues over the last nineteen seasons. Could San Jose advance out of the series? Of course-- the Sharks slayed their fair share of demons by dealing with adversity and fighting the bad bounces against Colorado. However, in terms of difficulty, this is one you'd like to avoid. There is no easy route to the Western Conference Finals. But there are easier routes than this.

Phoenix is a club that has played the Sharks well this year, slow games that always end up 2-1. Questions of whether they were a bonafide four seed were answered early Sunday afternoon when they went into Joe Louis Arena and forced a game seven. Dave Tippet is a wonderful coach who led the Dallas Stars to a postseason victory over San Jose in 2008-- he knows how effective the trap game can be against San Jose, and has the personnel to implement it much more effectively over the course of a seven game series when compared to Colorado. Ilya Bryzgalov, boasting a .930 career save percentage against the Sharks, always seems to bring his best stuff when going up against fellow countryman Evgeni Nabokov.

Nashville is the little brother that has begun to mature, and despite digging themselves into a 3-2 series hole, showed that they are able to hang with the Western Conference top guns in the postseason. The majority of the fanbase seem to take the Predators for granted due to their historical role as postseason whipping boys, but they definitely have the pieces to make things interesting. The blueline is beyond solid (even with Hamhuis questionable), Barry Trotz drains every conceivable ounce of talent out of his roster year after year, and Pekka Rinne can steal a game or two. That being said, I don’t think there’s any way they can recover from that meltdown in game five. It was a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon esque boot right to the babymaker.

Detroit goes seven, a series with Phoenix probably tilts in that direction as well. Nashville is the easiest draw for San Jose.

I don’t think we win the series, but I do think we win tonight. We’ve been absurdly good after those types of losses.

I’m still in shock over that loss.

I can’t believe Hossa wasn’t ejected, I can’t believe he wasn’t suspended for a game.

It’s just not right.

I agree. If the Preds can use that game as a rallying point, and get some energy from the home crowd, they could easily push this to a Game 7. Should that happen, well, anything’s possible, right?

I mean, Nashville has really taken the play to Chicago this series for the most part. They really should be up 3-2 right now. If they keep playing that way, and then just tighten the fuck up when they have the lead and a minute left…well, they could still do it.

Robert Frost would say you want Nashville, but I think the Sharks want to face Detroit, as odd as that sounds.

If you face Nashville or Phoenix, you will be facing a team that is coming off a two-game rally for a Game 7 win and will have all the confidence and momentum in the world but will still have that chip on its shoulder as the team nobody gave a chance. As if you want to go through that again.

Nashville will have gotten its first series win, which will energize that whole team and town like it never has been for hockey. Phoenix will have come off a victory against the team all the “experts” picked to win the West after Detroit’s torrid end to the season, plus Bryzgalov has an Anderson feel about him but with a much better supporting defensive scheme.

But, facing Detroit, you become America’s team because we all know there are only two types of people in this world. Humans and Wings fans.

No doubt Nashville’s first series win against a heavy favorite will be emotional, but that emotion takes a toll. Having won a series no one expected them to, and having to win two elimination games in a row to do it, must take a lot out of a team. I’d say there’s a good chance Nashville, if they win, comes out more depleted than energized, having spent everything they had to beat Chicago.

At least that’s what I’d hope for. :)

It's nothing but crumpled porno and Ayn Rand.

by strongrobot on Apr 26, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I could really care less about all that other stuff. The “oh, they’ll be up for the game and have momentum from beating a good team.” Why won’t they be demoralized to have their “reward” for beating a top team is having to play San Jose? I mean, the truth of the matter is, San Jose is the better team over Nashville and Pheonix. They should be the better team this year against Detroit too…but the track record this season says differently.

Teams coming off a Game 7 will be tired. They may get momentum, but really, that only matters for the first few minutes of a game. And in a 7 game series, I’ll take the more rested team, thanks. Even if the less rested team will have won 2 in a row and beaten favored teams. The Sharks have won three in a row, and will get a chance to rest injuries.

And if you want to play the confidence card, Detroit should have confidence against us, since they pretty much did whatever they wanted to against us this year. Phoenix and Nashville should be scared of us (even if its just slightly). We played both teams tough this year. Especially Nashville.

Finally, I’m pretty sure there’s a ton of people out there that want the Sharks to lose so they can continue to laugh at us or write about Jumbo and Patty and how terrible they are. Detroit may get more support than you think in a Sharks-Wings matchup.

This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

My desired outcome

I’d wait to play Detroit in the WCF. Heatley is 100%, Marleau finds his game or recovers from his possible injury. Hat tricks in the series for each, and Clowe gets a Gordie Howe. Vlasic is +7 in the series. Murray breaks Zetterberg’s face in game 6, passes to Pavelski, who then roofs a shot over Howard’s glove for the series winning goal..

but what about "energizing" victories?

Sure, Nashville would be the better opponent on paper, and tired from their seven-game series, and the fuel for my duel with my brother-in-law in TN … but … They would be coming off the high of having defeated Chicago and recovering from that Dan Boyle-esquely devastating loss in Game 5.

Same could be said for Phoenix: How much energy and confidence would they draw from a Game 7 victory?

Sure we’d have the rest, but but both the Preds and the Yotes would be fired up.

I find myself eerily gravitating toward a Detroit preference. They’d be tired from Game 7 if we were able to start the series on Thursday (which should happen if Chicago wins tonight, as we’d get the PHX-DET winner), giving us a leg up on Game 1, which we could use, if history is any guide. ;-0

by dhkeller on Apr 26, 2010 10:25 AM PDT reply actions

I’m mostly just hoping everyone goes to a Game 7. LA blew their chance last night to force a Game 7, but I’m hoping Nashville takes care of their business tonight. The more tired everyone else in the West is, the better it is in the long run for the Sharks.

I’m also pulling for Nashville to beat Chicago. Obviously, I like them best of a potential first round opponent (no slight to them, but they are a 7 seed for a reason), We’ve had big troubles with Detroit and Phoenix in the past (even when PHX wasn’t any good). But mostly, I think it would be hilarious for Chicago to lose in the first round.

I’m not sure Nashville is the easy draw. Of the three, they seem like the least likely to cause serious problems, but I wouldn’t expect them to be easy by any means. Phoenix would be annoying though, we all know it. We have issues with them normally and if they have a round 1 win under their belt they’ll be that much harder to beat. And you know, the Wings. Whatever.

If Chicago makes it, don’t they face Van? The were discussing this on NHL Live this morning. And the Hossa hit as well. Apparently the misconduct is NOT automatic and is up to the discretion of the ref, if he think the player receiving the hit suffered injuries. I think they even said to the head or neck, but I don’t recall that with confidence.

Detnashoenix

I’ve been watching Detroit/Phoenix/Nashville the past few days with the mindset of a San Jose matchup. Nashville looked very spunky and fast but this is the playoffs and honestly I feel any team could give SJ fits and really I think DET/NASH/PHX are all capable of putting SJ down just as I’m certain SJ could beat any of the three in a 7 game series. Who they play is of little concern compared to HOW they play.

My concern is with the HTML. I’m concerned with the disappearance of Patty’s game, although he seems to be quick and healthy, I’d prefer to see him finish his checks like he’s capable of, he has the physical skills to dominate nearly everyone out there but has been playing either off or soft. Joe looks panicked at times and seems to be in more of a scrambling mode and yet Clowe is the one who’s looking more like the Joe-we-know than Joe himself. Heatley may be hurting but I’ve never been pleased with his puck handling and his lack of puck pursuit passion is starting to get on my nerves. In the last Colorado game, I watched him floating around cherry-picking in the middle of the ice instead of assisting a lone Shark on the boards who was out-manned 3 to 1 and that led to a breakout and a goal for Colorado.

I expect more from these men and I hope we see some positive results; we’re talking about three amazing talents and it’s baffling. Mitchell is working his ass off and I don’t see that from Jumbo or Patty on that top line and if you can’t get inspired from Mitchell’s tenacity I don’t know what to say. I know Heatley is our sniper and he’ll do his share of floating in the middle but in the playoffs I believe everyone has to play with more urgency. Ok, done bitchin’. Bring on Detroit.

Go Sharks.

I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that, oh crap I quit drinking.

I missed the last few games

But early on, I was happy with Joe’s play. He seems to be suffering more from lack of linemates than anything else. He’s a setup man first, and if his setup guy is having a bad series, it looks bad for Joe. Heatley’s injured and Patty is on vacation. I think Joe’s numbers reflect that. Good news is, he has a new set of games to get his game back where he, and we, want it.

Heatley can play a more physical game than he gets credit for, but since his lower body injury he definitely hasn’t been finishing his checks and hasn’t been pursuing the puck with any tenacity. Hopefully the injury is one that can heal before the next series, and not an ACL/MCL strain or something else that will take weeks.

Heaters Gone Cold

HTML is a concern of every fan right now. The 2nd line has been the heart of this post season campaign, but there’s no way we’re making it out of the 2nd round no matter who we end up playing if the HTML doesn’t start producing more than assists. The 2nd line will not be able to carry the load by themselves. I totally agree on Heatley’s lack of puck pursuit and handling, which has been pissing me off to no end. He expects the puck to be placed in his wheel house every time. I have a hard time using the word “sniper” when describing him, especially when most of his goals have been from within a few feet of the net, but can we get some post season goals like he scored when he was with Ottawa? He hasn’t registered a goal since we played Vancouver end of March. Frustrating to say the least. I just don’t feel like he’s lived up to the hype.

Heatley's Injured

…and has been playing pretty hard for not being 100%. Did you forget the pass to Couture in Game 5?

Patty’s lack of production is of a greater concern to me.

Lack of production doesn't worry as much as...

It seems like Patty is disengaged. His defining moment for me, is the failure to clear that puck in Game 1. He glides over and turns away from the guy who wins the puck. Less than five seconds later, that puck is in our net.

He seems generally uninvolved and uninterested.

I’ve been a Patty defender for the most part, but in my eyes, he has looked every bit the timid “choker” he’s been unfairly labeled his whole career.

Put it another way. Pavs, Seto and Patty are all up for new contracts. Clowe has been well documented trade bait. Pavs, Seto and Clowe are all playing like there’s no tomorrow. Patty, not so much.

by ElvisVF101 on Apr 26, 2010 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah definitely. It sucks. Patty’s head is just not in the game at all. It almost seems like he’s not paying attention at times. Pucks/passes will cruise right by him and he won’t make any effort to stop them., shoot them, clear them, etc. I dunno what’s going on with him but I really hope he wakes up before round 2.

Heatleys been fine imo, considering he’s playing injured. He got 2 points last game if i remember right.

by Khaaz on Apr 26, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Just remember though, that HTML can go from 0 to 100MPH in nothing flat. Since our second line has received praise in the media and should the become fixated on during second round play, Patty and company could hit a nice gallop and surprise us yet. That’s me being optimistic though. I know they have the ability and tons of confidence this year. Lets just see what type of defensive tactics are played and how HTML adjust.

by Suisun Dan on Apr 26, 2010 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

The HTML line has been stuttering since the Olympic Break. I just hope that when they do find their game, it’s not during the offseason break.

Optimistically, the 1st line will continue to receive the top defensive matchups in the 2nd round. But if the Sharks face a team like Detroit or Nashville with more defensive depth than Colorado, it’s no secret that the top line has to find their game.

Look at it this way....

Why was Heatley brought into SJ? To score goals in the post season. That’s it. If Heatley is not doing that, injury or not, then he isn’t doing his part. I’ve had my own experience with injury… If it hurts too much to play the game normally, then let a rookie take your place, otherwise, man up, stop bitching and play the game. I hate to be the downer, but Heatley only purpose was to perform in the post season

Detroit, Nashville, Phoenix

My vote.

Nashville and Phoenix will have too much momentum coming in and their speed is killer.

Detroit are on their heels. Having to win in 7 against the Coyotes? Yikes.

Other then that, I hope Chicago takes a dump and loses both games 6 and 7.

by ilooklikeafat16 on Apr 26, 2010 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

I’m hoping for Nashville for the obvious reasons Zero has mentioned a few times already; it would mean that Chicago lost and they’re the easiest matchup for us.

If not Nashville, I think i’d rather play Detroit since they’d hopefully be coming off of a tough game 7 with only a day or so to rest before Game 1 against us. I also think we’re playing great (sans html) and if there was ever a time we could beat them in a 7 game series, it’s now imo. Plus, how awesome would it be to beat Detroit in the playoffs? Even if we didn’t end up winning the cup, that would be a reward in and of itself

Phoenix kinda scares me more than Detroit lately. They’re a real bad matchup for us. Think about all the things that we hate: The trap defense, hot goaltenders, teams that are faster than us (poor Murray). Phoenix are MASTERS of the trap defense, and with Dave Tippet at the reigns you can bet that they’ll execute it against us MUCH better than Colorado did. Bryzgalov is one of the hottest goaltenders in the league, and on paper he’s another Craig Anderson except with playoff experience. Don’t count on Bryzgalov getting fatigued and making mistakes like Anderson did by game 5. Shane Doan should be back soon too.

Nashville, Detroit, then Phoenix for me.

Chirping Ryane Clowe

Begs to differ. Why take out anyone? Dwight Helminen has a goal these playoffs. Logan Couture has scored. Scotty Nichol has scored. We don’t need an enforcer.

I’m sure Cerise would disagree with me, but we put up 4 on Vancouver, and that game got chippy.
But us getting 4 was pretty much a direct result of taking OUT an enforcer and putting IN a scorer.

not to be a downer

but here are some numbers for people to consider.

Sharks all-time record against Detroit is 25-55-4-4, which amounts to a dismal overall .330 winning percentage, and a .284 winning-not-in-a-shootout (important for the playoffs) percentage.

Certainly, these things can always change. But it’s certainly a scary prospect. Although I would love to see the sharks kick them in the nads.

Blah, stats like that don’t even matter. This isn’t the same team that lose all those games in years past, they aren’t even the same team that lost to the Redwings 3 of 4 games in this regular season.

We actually went to OT in both away games we played in Detroit, the 2 losses were in San Jose so maybe we shouldn’t be quite so afraid of Joe Louis arena.

they didn’t show me anything in the games this year to indicate a change. I don’t think the shift in the Colorado series was so dramatic as to have created an entirely new team.

Well earlier in the season when we played most of our games against Detroit, all we were talking about is how we were worried about our defense and secondary scoring; now those seem to be the least of our worries.

Bryz hasn’t looked very good at all this series. Just sayin…

Of course, neither has Howard. I just think that the Sharks just got done beating a team that was employing the trap. They’re in a groove playing against that style, so facing another trap team might actually be beneficial.

The Sharks just don’t play well against Detroit’s puck possession, Holmstrom in the crease style of play.

No Detroit, please.

HTML

I am not super concerned about our top line’s lack of productivity. Opponents focus their attention and game plan against that line. Just like great hitters get shut down during playoffs because the pitchers are better and teams are focused on not letting those hitters beat them.

I think that our 2nd and 3rd lines need to continue to step up and take advantage. One of the Sharks’ biggest strength is their depths. Teams may have one or two top defensemen but not enough to keep up with the Sharks’ talent on the frontline.

by calbearjd on Apr 26, 2010 12:50 PM PDT reply actions

Well if HTML continues to not be very threatening/productive then opponents will will play their best D-line against the Pavs line and we’ll end up with little to no scoring at all.

by Khaaz on Apr 26, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Opposing teams are continuously trying to shut down Crosby and Ovechkin…but at last check Crosby had 13 points and Ovechkin had 9. D.Sedin has 10 points, Nik Backstrom has 9, Zetterberg has 8. I mean, teams are trying like hell to shut these guys down, and they’re still not producing. So this isn’t much of an excuse. I don’t think HTML has looked terrible by any means, but great players find a way to score no matter what the circumstances are. It’s awesome the second line is rolling, because we need depth of scoring to advance, but the stars need to produce too.

To be fair, in the east, shutdown defense is something of a joke. And expecting anyone to match up with Crosby and Ovechkin’s production is a bit much. In regards to guys like Sedin and Zetterberg, Zetterberg has 8 points, but Phoenix hasn’t been playing anywhere as conservatively as the Avs were, who would basically put 5 guys in front of the net whenever the puck was in their zone. Furthermore, Hanaan is a pretty underrate shutdown dman, and is good at the grinding game. Both Z. Michalek and Volchenkov play more of a shotblocking style, which I always thought was a bit overrated, (shot blocking that is, e.g., rumors are that Volchenkov wants $5M/yr on his new contract, he certainly isn’t worth that.) And no one has been as lucky as Anderson. Look at Chicago: Kane is -1 even with 3G, and 3A. Toews is even, with 1G and 4A. Sharp is +1 with 2G and 2A. Hossa is +1 with 1G and 4A. None of these are particularly amazing performances.

Regardless, in Detroit’s case, Zetterberg is playing on the 2nd line. Their first line is Franzen-Datsyuk-Cleary. This keeps teams from trying to throw all of their defensive ability at one line.

by tarlinian on Apr 26, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

The East is terrible. I just put this out there because, no matter how hard we may want to defend our big guys, the teams that win in the postseason are the ones that have their stars scoring as well as some scoring depth. We’ve shown the depth, but we still HAVE TO HAVE our top guys scoring if we want to go deep into the postseason. You can survive one round without them (especially when your team outclasses your opponent by a ton overall already…and don’t kid yourself, Colorado was way overmatched against us). But if they think they can get by Pheonix or Detroit without HTML finding the back of the net, well, they’ll be in for quite a surprise, IMO.

I’m not saying HTML has been terrible, I think I already pointed that out. But all teams need their top guys scoring, and the same is true for the Sharks. I’m sure they can get going, though.

I’m personally concerned with the Sharks’ schedule next season.

I mean, starting out in Europe, and then we also have to play at Boston and Montreal, the two cities furthest away. Not having the most miles traveled next season is something I honestly cannot see happening.

Looks like Chicago’s the winner of their series. So all Western Conference division leaders have won their series. We’re still waiting on the remaining series between Detroit and the Coyotes.

So you guys get the winner of that series.

I’m here to wish you guys some luck in your playoff series. So, unless the Capitals get their act together on Wednesday, I will be pulling for the Western Conference winner in the Stanley Cup this year. I really can not stand the Pittsburgh Penguins at all and root for anyone to beat them.

I have nothing personal against the Red Wings and admire their mode of operation but would rather see a different team this year. I probably like the Sharks better than the rest of the Western Conference teams but have no real hatred for any of them.

I don’t really care too much who we face next because all four teams left in the West are excellent in their own right so you’re pretty much picking your poison. At this point though, Detroit might be a better match up for the Sharks. As good as Howard has been, he can definitely be gotten to. We all know the quality of Bryzgalov, and with every game being so close I like our chances against Detroit’s goaltending more then Phoenix’s.

Mostly I think it’d be really good for the Sharks moving forward they knocked out Detroit.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Apr 26, 2010 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

I just think the Sharks match up the worst with Detroit. What in our track record against them this season makes anyone think that all of a sudden we’ll be able to hold the puck long enough to get to Howard enough? I mean, Howard has been the same Howard all season, and we had trouble against the Wings all season anyways. Phoenix is a good team, but at least we know we can beat them more than once.

This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

by ZeroIndulgence on Apr 26, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

if we bang the bodies the way we did against Colorado, I think we can wear down Detroit in a long series. They still have fantastic individual players, but i like the quality we can roll out with all four lines. There’s no question some of our big guns need to get their games going, but they need to do whether it’s the Coyotes or Phoenix. Phoenix can play 2-1 or 3-2 games all series and Bryzgalov has the ability to steal more games then Howard.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

Luckily, its out of our hands. Whoever wins tomorrow gets to face us! Which should be terrifying to them, as the Sharks are beast. I still think the Wings are our worst possible opponent…but Phoenix isn’t much better. The Sharks will have to be on top of their game either way.

Wings

I feel the Coyotes have played us so much this year that we can’t really catch them off guard with anything. All history with Detroit aside, I feel like we might have a better chance against Detroit who isn’t as familiar with our team this year. And in all honesty, is there a better way to earn the Cup than through Detroit?

It only makes the victory that much sweeter. True, I wouldn’t care if we played the worst team in the east and won but there’s always the extra pride that comes along with beating a rival.

Theres nothing id like more than for the Sharks to be the team that sends Detroit home. However in terms of playing style. The Sharks have had more success against the Coyotes this year and historically than the Wings. Avalanche employed the trap just like the Coyotes do and it seems as though the sharks have figured out how to beat it. My main problem is Bryz….

Yeah i kind of agree with the whole ‘catchin them off guard’ thing. They’ll probably have some false confidence playing us since they did so well in the regular season but we have really looked like a different team lately.

Like i mentioned earlier, if there was ever a time we could woop Detroit in a 7 game series, it’s right now. We’re playing great, and Detroit isn’t playing their best; we’ll also be coming off 4 days of rest after rd.1, Detroit will only have 1 day of rest.

Maybe i’m a bit overconfident after seeing a couple of lackluster performances by Detroit against Phoenix, but they just don’t look that scary to me right now. On the other hand i could see Phoenix giving us a lot of trouble for the reasons i mentioned before; their speed, their trap defense style, Ilya Bryzgalov, and a Coach that seems to know how to beat the Sharks.

Our 4 games against Detroit this year came when we were rolling and they still werent even in a playoff position. However I think we can all agree on one thing. Any team you play in the west is not gonna be a favorable match-up.
