A Veritable Sharks Gameday: Forecasting Your Future

Photo

Well here it is. A game seven, filled with a peculiar form of detached drama and intrigue that comes hand in hand with non-Shark playoff games. Tonight has the potential to determine San Jose's season, it has the potential to be a footnote in a march to the Western Conference Finals.

It's funny how things seem to work in San Jose. Following game one the boo birds were out in full force at The Tank, your mother up in arms over the Sharks' loss, the Bay Area media having a field day preying on familiar emotions. People were pissed. Now there's a subset of the population that wants to take Detroit head on, shove a grenade right into that Winged Wheel and send it rolling back on Interstate-80. They're old, they're aging, they're tired, they're looking past the Sharks.

Love the confidence. A little concerned about the conclusion.

San Jose played some of their best hockey of the season against Colorado. It's a noble notion to have, the one that states this team is ready for any competitor. And they most certainly are-- you don't achieve first place in the Western Conference by floating through important games. The Sharks locker room will tell you there isn't a difference between either of the two teams playing tonight, state that they will both be huge forces to be reckoned with. And that locker room is unequivocally correct in that mindset-- as I mentioned yesterday, a seven game series with either team is an extremely likely possibility. No easy roads through the Western Conference.

But there some that are easier than others.

At any rate, I think it's safe to say everyone is aware of where I stand on this philosophical question. The first chapter of that novel gets written in stone around 9:00 PM tonight, and I won't be the one chiseling away. Let em' fall as they may.

Looking ahead, how huge is game one going to be? With The Eagles concert at HP Pavilion this weekend it's likely the Sharks get a Thursday-Sunday matchup with two days of rest in between. A bit of a blow considering their opponent will be coming into the series with less rest, and therefore more time for recuperation, which makes jumping right into the swing of things from the drop of the puck all the more important. Go for the jugular.

Couldn't tell you what a game one loss feels like in the locker room, but I can tell you this-- if four games felt like four months against Colorado, those two days would feel like two years. Biggest game of the series.

Until game two of course.

Whatever the future holds, it's important as a fanbase we don't let that first round victory over Colorado get to our heads. With all due respect to the Avalanche, the eight teams comprising the Western Conference playoff pool this season were really a case of 1A (San Jose through Nashville) and 1B (Colorado). Colorado played above their heads all throughout 2009-2010, but it was clear throughout the series that it will be another year or two until they become legitimate contenders. The injuries didn't help. You can make the same case for Nashville, but that's a much more mature team compared to Colorado. The Avs were green, and for the most part, San Jose handled them as such. Handled them as they should.

Thursday is a whole different type of animal.

The Sharks haven't proved all too much at this point, despite overcoming some really unfortunate bounces and the adversity that comes along with that. The true test begins later in the week in front of 17,562 lunatics who, through the power of sport, all become best friends for a couple hours. Beautiful stuff really.

And lest I forget-- so nice to meet you again, Monsieur Deuxieme Ronde. It's been far too long.

Prediction: Wings win 4-3 in overtime. Goals by Datsyuk (x2), Bertuzzi, and Rafalski. The Evil Empire doesn't fall quite yet.

Go Sharks.

Unfortunately they also included Kings in 6 and Nashville in 7…

I’m in the camp that is both pulling for the Yotes, and think they will win (Game 7 at home, epic). But anything can happen. I mostly just hope yall end up playing like 12 OT periods.

It would be a completely epic series for certain. Really nothing like a Wings-Sharks game.

That being said, issues with our defensive unit would be exposed much more than they would be with a date against Phoenix. That’s the kicker for me. I’ll take the issues with Tippet’s trap game over Datsyuk and Zetterberg every day of the week.

Either way, bring on a long and grueling series.

Agreed.

I also have this feeling that the Sharks, coming off of just playing against, strategising for, and beating a trap team, would be better prepared to face the Tippet Trap than they would for Detroit’s puck possession, Holmstrom’s ass in your face offense. By the end of the Colorado series, San Jose was shredding the trap. Obviously Phoenix has better personnel to implement their trap, but its still a trap. The Sharks can beat that.

Also, Detroit scares the shit outta me. And we would get the benefit of zero whistles against Detroit, whereas against Phoenix it might actually be more even.

This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

by ZeroIndulgence on Apr 27, 2010 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Dunno why, but I agree...

For some reason, my gut tells me we’d be better off facing Detroit than Phoenix. Phoenix will trap the hell out of us, just like the Avs did, but they’ll do it much better, and with a quicker counter-attack and an even bigger wall in net. I think Detroit has looked quite beatable in this series.

I’m not entirely sure why so many people seem so convinced that Detroit = instant death. Reputation from many years past? Assuming they make it through to round 2, to me they would seem like the weakest team left.

It’s weird…the more I’ve thought about it the past 24 hours, the more I agree with you. I feel that if there was ever a year in which we could persevere in a best-of-7 series against the Wings, it’s this year. They’re old, they’re past their prime, and if they even manage to eek out a win, they’ll be coming out of a 7-game series with next to no rest (assuming game 1 ends up being on Thursday). Plus, Howard’s nowhere near as good as Anderson, though the team around Howard is slightly better than that around Anderson.

I guess it’s a case of pick your poison.

by OtherKid on Apr 27, 2010 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions

If there was ever a team that could just turn it on

It’d probably be the Red Wings. See earlier in the regular season when Detroit was out of the playoff picture (yes, they had injuries) when there was legitimate concern whether they’d even make the playoffs to their hot streak after the olympic break, making it all the way up to the 5th seed.

Even with the vulnerability that Howard has shown, Detroit has a history of winning it all on mediocre goaltending (just check how many times Chris Osgood’s name has been on the Cup). Holmstrom, Zetterberg, and Datsyuk are names that inspire plenty of begrudging respect IMO, and I think it’s hard ever to really count them out.

Really though, it’s gonna be a hard series no matter who wins tonight. Sounds like Game 1 will be Thursday, so the rested Sharks should be able to bring it against the tired PHX/DET team. As long as the Sharks ALL play to their capabilities (and in some instances, above), they can beat any team in a best of 7.

Good points all of them, but Phoenix turned it on long before the Wings did this season, and have shown no signs of fatigue. Add in the fact that they have an elite goaltender, and the Coyotes may not be the preferred match-up necessarily.

I wholeheartedly agree that both series would be epic in scope, and daunting from every perspective.

by Pizzle on Apr 27, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Blah, i don’t think it’s fair to downplay how well the Sharks have played just because it wasn’t against Detroit or something.

Everyone besides HTML looked far better in the Colorado series than they did throughout the entire regular season whether we were playing the Oilers, the Maple Leafs, or any other teams that make the Avalanche look real cup contenders.

by Khaaz on Apr 27, 2010 2:00 AM PDT reply actions

It doesn’t make the series win any less special, or less of an achievement. That’s not what I’m trying to say.

Colorado was a team who was not in the same class as San Jose, and the way the ice was tilted, I think that should be pretty clear. The Sharks played a great series and exploited that mismatch. They did what they needed to do to advance, and did it well.

But this is the round where the true test comes. There’s no way the shot differential even approaches first round levels, even if the Sharks play exactly the same way. The blueline will be put through the fire and face a much more capable opponent— partly due to the greater skill of the Wings/Coyotes forwards, partly due to the fact that the Wings/Coyotes defensemen will be able to move the puck up the ice. These are two rosters that are much stronger top to bottom compared to Colorado.

Believing in this team and acknowledging that the next round will be the true test are not mutually exclusive ideas, at least to me.

Oddly enough, if the Coyotes advance over the Wings, a true West Side battle will happen. For the Coyotes used to be the Winnipeg Jets. Get it. Jets vs Sharks!

Yeah. When you consistently beat a team, they tend to not be as evil in your eyes. And when you only play said team maybe once or twice a year, max, then you kind of don’t really care about them.

When a team consistently beats you, then they’re evil incarnate. If their fans are douchebags as well, then you start to actually wish for a meteor to hit them instead of the joking way that most people think.

Along with the fact that the Penguins seem to have the system gamed. Play so-so during the regular season and make the playoffs but not finish first. Then, turn it on for the playoffs while all the main competitors in the conference fall by the wayside in the early rounds

Both in 2008 and 2009, that’s what the Pens did. And there’s a very good chance that the Pens will make it to the SC Finals this year since the teams left in the East are nowhere are good. Does anybody realistically expect either the Habs or the Bruins or the injury decimated Flyers to be able to stop the Pens?

I legitimately think the Coyotes win tonight.

I can see it now. They jump out to an early 2-0 lead that Detroit never really comes back from.

The last few minutes off the Red Wings season will tick down as they lose 4-2 in painfully anticlimactic fashion.

Or whatever. I also had a dream that the Caps dealt Ovechkin to two seperate teams over the summer, in what the hockey media was calling “Russian Roulette: The Great Charade”.

I need more sleep or something. Go Coyotes!

I didn’t realize he was the only Russian goaltender to take his team to the conference finals, when Jiggy went down with injury in 2006, and he did it in just his 8th playoff game.

The only other goaltender to do that in a recent history was Brodeur the year the Devils lost in Game 7 to the Rangers (1994, I think).

Tank warfare versus Fighter jets.

In all the fuss in the media about Little Joe’s emergence, what they are missing is the style of the last series. Tank warfare. Clog up the middle. Slow each other down. Blast at each other. The NHL certainly reduced it’s influence after the lockout, but it remains a core of the Avs game. The problem with the style of course is that it’s tough to score goals. That’s what really killed the Avs. And it’s how the ‘yotes play too.
May I present our best tank drivers, Mr’s Clowe, Setoguchi, and Pavelski. They need no introduction at this point.

Detroit is something very different. Fighter jets. Move fast. A wide open game. East, west, not just north, south. An emphasis on speed, precision and fire power. Our best fighter pilots? Mr’s Thornton, Heatley, and Marleau. Do we have the jets? %40 of our offence came from these 3 fliers this year. Give them clear skies, and they will take the enemy down.
We find out tonight what kind of battle it will be.

Normally I’d be all for facing the Yotes over the Wings. No question, really. But right now, feeling the energy we all got — hell, that the players seemed to get — from defeating the Avalanche … how much more of that same energy would Phoenix roll in with, if they staged the upset and took down the freakin’ Red Wings?

I think that with that under their belts, they’d start to develop a degree of immortality complex — and it may be justified.

What’s the status of Shane Doan?

Because a team missing their captain (and spark plug and pain in the ass and…) might sway my decision.

I know the regular season doesn’t mean shit but we played better games against the Yotes than we did the Wings.

Still, either way it won’t be easy and for that reason I don’t care who we play. It’s playoffs, round two and I can’t remember the last time the sharks made the conference finals (Edmonton?). So who gives a shit who we play? We need to pound them into submission either way.

We just traded who for who?!

Great round one win, very exciting

Also proved very little. Colorado should have been done in four, and we let them hang around and even get in our heads a little.

Hats off to Team Teal for getting their act together and get to this point, but any notion that “this is the year” is pure hubris coming off of an emotional high. We haven’t proven we can beat Detroit until you look them in the eye, shake their hand and send them packing back to MoTown. Any notion that we’ve put the “choker” label behind us is premature until… well… we don’t say what it would take, but we all know. At the very least, we have to go down fighting rather than whimpering like we have in post-seasons past.

Colorado should have been done in four

I don’t agree that Avs should have been done in four. Most were even predicting it in five. We aren’t giving them credit to assume they could be swept so easily.

I also don’t agree that we have whimpered off in previous post-seasons. That series against Dallas proves that.

Colorado deserves a ton of credit

I hope I don’t come off as slighting them, although that’s hard not to do when you say to them they should have been swept. But with all the injuries they were dealing with, how we let them stay in this series will still give me heartburn going into the next round.

Dallas is a bit of the exception in our recent post-season history. I really thought the team had turned a corner at that point. The start to the following season really seemed like the team remembered the bitterness of that OT loss. And then, well… yeah, not going to remember that.

But, in my memory, Edmonton, Detroit and, well, I’m sure there’s one more, were unmitigated meltdowns. After 2 wins for the other team, I can’t say I ever really felt the Sharks would come back.

That’s one positive to take from this series. After surrendering two losses, really heartbreaking ones at that, the team DID find a groove. No matter who you are playing, 3 wins in a row is always tough.

223 row 17 i think. this will be a true test of my playoff mojo.. we’re 5-0 when i go but i’ve never been to a game 1! one game 2, three game 5s and game 7 vs cgy.

i really think we can do this though.. whoever we get. i feel like the team has really gelled as a team and not just joe/patty/heater + everyone else. now we just need those three to show up like we know they can and we’ll be able to rock whoever we’re playing.

Yeah, my mojo really turned itself around. For the first half of the season, it was horrendous. I was present for the blowout by Chicago, as well as the Red Wings loss and Bruins SO loss. And present for the Stars and Kings SO losses.

But then the mojo pulled a 180 at the end of the season – I was present for the near comeback against NJ, the pounding of Vancouver, and our win against Colorado at the end of the regular season. And present for game 5 last week. Booyah!

Sharks have about $20.5M in cap space for next season

UFAs:

Marleau
Nabokov
Malhotra
Nichol
Blake
Ortmeyer
Wallin
Helminen
Leach
Other prospects who won’t play the full 82 for the big club but may be called up

RFAs

Pavelski
Setoguchi
Karlsson
Zalewski
Joslin
Staubitz
Other prospects

Thornton and Heatley both make $7M, and Boyle is not far off at $6.7M.

It’s probably going to take about $4M to keep Seto and Pavs. They both deserve it at this point. I personally would like to see Malhotra get $1.5M, and if Blake stayed at $1M, I think that’s fair. That leaves $10M for Patty, Nabby and the rest. I think we have to use about $2M-$2.5M for the sum total of Nichol, either Ortmeyer or Helminen, Wallin and Leach (or their replacements), plus enough scratch for the kids who’ll get called up. Which leaves us about $7.5-$8M for Patty and Nabby.

I’d say, offer each of them about $3.5M. In Nabby’s case, I’d consider offering him term to get him to stay. For Patty, I’d probably say the same, but I would offer him less than Nabby.

I wouldn't be surprised if Blake stays

but not for $1M. More like 2 or even 2.5, I bet.

To put it in perspective, Huskins is making $1.5 and is getting $1.9 next year.

by ZeroIndulgence on Apr 27, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I can see Pavelski being worth 4M easily, but no way is Seto worth 4M until he figures out his consistency issues. No matter how good a series he just had, this is still a guy bumped to the third (or fourth) line for a fair bit of the season.

Malhotra turned down (I believe) a 2M / year offer to come to the Sharks, so look for him to want a hefty pay increase.

Blake might be done. He’s looking at bottom pair minutes, otherwise, I’d think.

We’d be lucky to have Marleau for 3.5M. I know he hasn’t shown up in this series, but his history in the playoffs and in the regular season is much more consistent.

With all the young goaltending talent, I’m not sure what they’re doing with Nabby. Nabby will probably want his last long contract, and it seems the future of Sharks goaltending is maybe a year or two away at the most.

It's nothing but crumpled porno and Ayn Rand.

by strongrobot on Apr 27, 2010 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I figure

The average between Pavs and Seto is $4M. Maybe like $4.1or Pavs and $3.6ish for Seto, something comparable to Clowe’s contract.

Malhotra turned down $2M for 4 years from Atlanta if memory serves. He might merit that sort of contract, but I don’t think we can offer him more than the $1.5.

Blake has gone on record as saying he’d like to play a few more years. If he doesn’t like our offer, I’m sure he’ll shop his services elsewhere.

Marleau probably merits more than $3.5, but that money is now tied up in Heatley. When Jumbo comes off the books next season, we could think about giving him more money, but it just isn’t there right now. Maybe he takes $3.5M this year then goes into the offseason with Joe to see how to spread about $10M between the two of them.

Greiss never got a fair shake this season. Stalock and Sexsmith have no NHL experience. This team is not in a position to GROOM a goaltender. If Greiss stays with the club, we need someone who can put in about 40-50 games in tandem with him. Nabby’s still my best bet for that.

by ZeroIndulgence on Apr 27, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

You see

If we just wait until the trade deadline when his contract is prorated, we can trade him for Brad Staubitz and Jody Shelley!

The rest of the league loves making fun of us, but the one area they may have a case is our salary structure. We had something like 20% of our cap in 5 players this season with HTML, Boyle and Nabby. Patty’s already gotten one break for a bad post-season (Detroit). I doubt very much Doug Wilson will give him another break if he continues his current pace of play. And shedding a $6.3M cap hit in a falling cap world is nothing to sneeze at.

Plus, next season, not only is Jumbo due for another contract, but McGinn, Demers and Couture are all up to (I think Couture is anyway). The Salary Structure of the team has to change very soon.

Yeah, which is a little too pricey for me. Who knows where it eventually shakes out though, depends on the market. Kovalchuk is asking for ten million supposedly, but as Elvis mentioned last week, there’s few teams who can afford it.

Hamhuis for less would be fine for me as well.

Whatever though. I can’t let myself get sucked into this otherwise I’ll just go all night. In two minute intervals of course.

I think I would prefer Detroit to win, seeing as Howard scares me a lot less than Bryzgalov. Either team will give us a lot of trouble though.

I just hope that the extra rest and the fact that the Avs were so banged up without 2 of their best scorers for the entire series doesn’t screw us up in Round 2.

Probably. My problem was that I had to go to orientation the day of the Lakers’ victory parade, and the stupid Lakers planned their parade route right next to USC to the Coliseum, so most off-ramps were closed. And the ones that you could get off on were completely filled with traffic from people merging/not following rules/not waiting/being douchebags.

He is so dumb. I can’t stand him. He takes every good little thing that the Sharks do and turns it into something terrible

by pooponastick on Apr 27, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

This post includes

Saying that Sacco out coached McLellan and praising Duchene for ending up with 3 points -3 thanks to crap wingers and demanding we trade Joe for ending up -4 with 3 points despite apparently not having wingers.

This man is genius…

The Sharks are terrible. Keep the hating going, national media. Our eventual triumph will be that much sweeter. I can’t wait for the collective middle finger San Jose will get to flip the rest of the NHL should the Sharks finally prevail.

I read this same article just now (I’m willing to read anything at this point to hold me off until Thursday) and had the same reaction. His articles infuriate me. He is the most self-loathing Sharks fan ever- and his blog makes up look the same. Its best to just ignore him…though it is hard at times. I hope he doesn’t go to the games, he is taking up a good seat for someone that wants to be there.

Well it looks like they almost even out…. Perhaps the post Olympic “I’m better than you and should have been played” mojo Bryz has towards Nabby might come back up if we end up playing them in the 2nd round?

Bryzgalov is a great goaltender, but I feel like people are underestimating Jimmy Howard as well. Dude had a .924 SV% this season, and a much better group of elite players in front of him.

Bryzgalov is better. Howard isn’t all that far off though, especially when you take into account the personnel playing in front of him.

Kinda my feelings about the whole thing too. Bryz may be better. And I think Howard is actually overrated. But Howard has a star studded team around him. Also, the Sharks just don’t match up well with Detroit. It’s been proven on the ice all year.

Agreed

I’ve given up trying to beat the drum, and it doesn’t really matter anymore really. Sharks play whoever advances today and that’s that.

Howard may have the better defensive corp

But with all the injuries, there’s been a lot of variation in front of him. Phoenix has had more consistency in terms of who dresses.

Howard may not be Bryzgalov, but his save percentage is no joke.

Time difference might not be as big of a factor this round— it’s always great to not travel back and forth, but Chicago and Vancouver are dealing with the same thing.

I’m sorta rooting for Vancouver in the other round… So, if we get through Phoenix and Vancouver to get to the finals we won’t have traveled nearly as much as we could have since we’ll be playing an eastern team that probably had bus rides from their last series.

I’m pulling for Vancouver as well— we match up a whole lot better with them compared to Chicago. Plus I’m sick of the Blackhawks already.

The Eastern Conference doesn’t even have to order a chartered bus. Pretty sure they travel in taxis.
