Mission Accomplished: Sharks Rule the Pacific as Flames Evaporate
San Jose Sharks arrived to Calgary on the last leg of their final road trip of the regular season. A win meant that they would clinch the Pacific Division. On top of that, a win by the Avalanche would mean that the Flames would miss the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
That's exactly what happened.
Sharks got on the board first, with a power play goal by Rob Blake. If someone on the Sharks roster benefited from the Olympic break, it is Rob Blake. He's no longer shooting just from the blue line, as he's done for most of the season. Blake is now getting closer to the net, and his offensive vision is still there, if not his slap shot. This is how he scored another goal, as Logan Couture was screening Kipper, and Rob Blake put the shot behind the two. Since the Sharks started winning again, Blake has 9 points in 7 games, including 2 goals.
As we praise Blake, let's not omit Couture's role in this goal. We don't see Thornton, Pavelski, Marleau or Malhotra - other centers who see power play time - screen goalies as often as we see Couture there. Rookie center loves that spot and it is one of his main assets.
Second goal of the game was scored by Jamie McGinn as a result of the relentless fore-check by the Sharks. I thought that goal represented everything good that Sharks did in that game. While the Flames were more physical and outhit the Sharks 22-11, the Sharks skated with more energy and determination in the first two periods, and their fore-check lead to a logical goal. The Flames were unable to clear the puck in their zone, it got to Vlasic who shot it from the blue line, and if the first try by Couture to redirect a rebound did not find the net, McGinn made sure the puck still went in. He picked it up as it bounced off Kipper, skated it past him and put it in the open net.
The commitment by the forwards to play defense was also the reason why none of the players from the HTML line got on the scoreboard. They were mostly invisible tonight in the offensive zone and Thornton's 37% on faceoffs tonight did not help either. But they were busy in the defensive zone.
The Flames came out in the 3rd period knowing this was likely their last chance to save the season. The Sharks knew it too and they dropped all the way back to sit on the lead. The Flames did score a goal at the start of the period on a power play. Malhotra intercepted the pass, but failed to clear it, and the defense stood still watching the puck go past two Sharks players and Nabokov into the empty net.
Despite all that, the defensive effort did pay out for the Sharks. Nabokov had another strong night, as did all the defensive units. Nothing stopped the Sharks from earning another two points and a fifth Pacific Division championship in the club's history.

Actually, I'll give the Yotes a hand clap
Before this season, the Coyotes franchise looked like a mess and a half.
Challenging for the Pacific crown in April is quite an accomplishment. Cheers, canines.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So, I didn’t get to celebrate properly with you guys, but hey! We did it! And unlike last year, it wasn’t because all the other teams sucked even more than we did down the stretch, but that we got the win to clinch! PACIFIC DIVISION CHAMPS, BABY!
And the reason why I missed the game? I went to see Grant Imahara, who is freaking hilarious. So many nerdy anecdotes, so little time (“The last movie I worked on before I went to Mythbusters was XxX 2: State of the Union. It was good that I went out on a high note”). Oh, and before the show my roommate’s boyfriend made me tweet him to tell him to get off of Twitter and get on stage (since he was busy tweeting Adam and the show was supposed to start), which I did, and then during the show he told everyone about my tweet and called out my name, looking for me. I’m generally timid so I just sunk down in my seat and turned bright red, but still, HE WAS LOOKING FOR ME.
So, yeah. Generally awesome night.

Fuck yeah!!!
3 Pacific Division Championships in a row! First team to do that in the Pacific since the Stars in 98-01. So, yeah, pretty awesome! Now we just need the pesky Chicago Blackhawks to lose so we can get that 1 seed again!

Also, this is our 5th Pacific division title overall, which ties us with Dallas for the most Pacific Division titles since the division was created in 1993! Not bad. We’re slowly erasing Dallas from the Pacific division record books. Now if we could only get that pesky shiny trophy…

Good game tonight by the boys, they were skating from the drop of the puck.
I have a theory on Couture finally playing with McGinn (who both looked sick with Clowe). It’s possible in my eyes that McLellan wanted to play them off each other after the Olympics in order to give them a crash course in the pro game. This is more important for Couture obviously considering he didn’t have the experience McGinn had in the NHL.
At any rate, this allows both of them to get a feel of playing with the guys who have been around the team, learn the system, understand what it takes to compete at that level. Now that he’s done that for 15 odd games, McLellan trusts them enough to play them together and is going to cash in on their familiarity with one another heading into the playoffs.
Food for thought. I hope they keep that line together. Reminds me of Perry & Getzlaf during Anaheim’s Cup run in 07’. Seeing sheltered minutes on a lower line but contributing immensely to the team’s success.

Looking forward to how putting McGinn, Couture and Clowe do together in the post season. I am also interested in how the other newbies do Heater, Manny, Nichols, if they can add that passion and intensity to the team for the playoff push.
Yeah that theory definitely makes sense. If only Mclellan had started the process a lot sooner.
Seeing Couture and Mcginn play so well just makes me wonder if we really do know better than Mclellan and company a lot of times. Couture and McGinn would’ve been in the lineup a loong time ago.
haha

i mean i know your tongue is firmly imbedded in your cheek here…. developing a rookie at a pro level is probably a lot more complex then just throwing them out there. is it possible that the immensely successful 3/4 season in worcester has anything to do with how well couture is playing?
just a pet peeve of mine when we as fans think we know more about the game than the guys payed millions to coach and play it…

I usually think it’s stupid when people talk that way about most sports too, but l can’t help but notice that all of the suggestions from here on FTF that actually end up happening-seem to end up improving the team just as we had thought.
We suggested bringing Couture/Mcginn up sooner to help them reignite old chemistry and get them ready before the playoffs, and they did do that but it might’ve been better if they had a few more games to play together to test things out. I also still think it would’ve been a MUCH better idea to let Greiss play more earlier in the season to give him more experience for next year, and to give Nabby a break.
ya,
i guess its our prerogative as fans to cheer or boo decisions by the office of our team. no problem with that.
im sure as much as we second guess the decisions, everyone in that org must do so 10×.
though mcginn was a victim of cap juggling and subsequent shuttle busting too. many factors go into players actually seeing ice time, but all of this can be REALLY scrutinized when the sharks are eliminated in the 2nd round again. ;-o

mcginn is skating with a ton of confidence right now, and putting clowe out there with him is a matchup nightmare. couture adds the jelly to the bread. all three of those guys are smart, strong guys, they go to the body, and get through the tough areas.
interesting to se the 2nd unit getting 1st nod on the late power play too.

Marleau
HTML was MIA. one or 2 genuine chances, and really no cycle or deep threat provided… once again. and i think the key factor is marleau. that top line really depends on his mobility and speed, and just is out of sync when he is playing 100%
is marleau hurt? he sure avoided ANY physical contact, and got pushed of the puck multiple times. he hardly skated on most shifts, and was a bigger liability than joe. it may have been the most uninspired performance by the captain of our hearts i have seen in a loooong time. he seems to have been about 60% since the olympics, and trending downwards.

Tmac mentioned injuries before the calgary game
and it is not a stretch to imagine marleau has something nagging him enough to take his foot off the pedal.
if coasting for a few games keeps him in game shape while giving him a “break” before the playoffs, so be it. id rather see a healthy marleau in 2 weeks who looked god-aweful down the stretch than an injured marleau who overextended himself down this stretch.

This is somewhat expected...
As I think we’ve touched on before a few times, teams have switched up their strategy since the beginning of the season, focusing much more heavily on effectively shutting down HTML and eliminating them as a threat. How long has it been since we’ve seen the types of goals where Heatley or Marleau is camped out in the crease, tapping in a textbook pass from Jumbo? You know, the types of goals that allowed Heater to notch two hat tricks in as many months? The goals from that line have had to get dirtier and dirtier as the season has progressed.
That being said, I think at least part of the reason that secondary scoring has come to life in the second half of the season has been precisely because the blueline of opposing teams have focused so much on taking HTML out of the game. The ideal situation would obviously be to strike a balance between the two, allowing HTML to still produce in proportion to their salaries and skill on paper, while still providing opportunities for the 2nd and 3rd lines to make their presence known on the scoreboard.
..:Fear The Fin:..
great point.
teams really learned how to shut down the top line, and do a great job apparently of stacking 3 guys in the slot and force html to the perimeter.
i think that line can overcome the best defense in the league, but it will take the kind of commitment seen on the 2nd and third line to going into the dangerous areas, which none of the 3 have been doing lately. maybe to avoid injury?
with their size and speed, that line really has no excuse- scheme-wise or other, for not being able to at least sustain pressure. it comes down to commitment. and that is yet to be seen.

I'm so happy we WON!
We really needed that win for morale and everything but those last 30 seconds everyone was totally on their feet freaking out praying that the Flamers wouldn’t score. It was an awesome game. :) good job boys!

About those last 30 secs.
First of all, yay for Sharks taking the division. Second, yay for the Flames getting knocked out.
Now onto those last 30 secs., Calgary was in a mad rush trying to put pucks on the net, but in one sequence, the puck cleared the zone and a Calgary defender put the puck back in causing a delayed offside. This was an excellent chance for the Sharks to milk the clock. Then Seto, likely out of instinct, tried to play the puck out of the zone, which led to the Flames recovering the puck and reentering the zone, ensuing to the final mad dash.* Luckily, Sharks managed to win, but I hope the coaching staff hones in on that just to improve their situational hockey going into the playoffs.
*Although I’m kinda dumping on him for this, overall I was impressed with his play towards the end of the game. He was skating hard, beating people to the puck, pure hustle – just think he coulda wasted more clock.

EXACTLY!
we were all just screaming at the TV to keep it on their end don’t even attempt the freaking empty netter but no…. the Flame’s D kept stealing the puck from us (kinda reveals how terrible our puck skills are)…it was kind of heartbreaking but a win is a win regardless of how sloppy it was.

I really liked our blueline last night
Yeah, there will always be room for improvement with these guys, but I thought they did a fantastic job of consistently forcing a desperate Calgary forward corps to the outside. A big part of the reason Nabby was able to make as many saves as he did was that he was able to see a good deal of the shots. That being said, I do give him all the credit in the world for several spectacular saves off dangerous Calgary scoring chances in the crease.
..:Fear The Fin:..
second and third chances
or, the lack there-of was the key.
probably one of the most solid all around defensive games i can remember lately. only a few odd man breaks, and the recovery was really solid. the over-pursuit by the back-checkers that plagued them over the past month and a half was no where to be seen.
the defensemen were really active in front of the net, and fulfilled their end of the bargain by tying up the forwards and giving nabby clear lanes to see the puck.
that game gives me a small glimmer of hope that they are figuring things out, and can be competitive this year in the playoffs.
