Luongo leaves you expecting more, wanting more. The great goalies win games when it matters most. He doesn't.

not just cause their all lower seeds

Of the remaining teams, I would say my order of teams, starting with the team i most want to win the cup:

1. Hmm… that team that beat Detroit?
2. Vancouver
3. Chicago
4. Philadelphia
5. Boston
6. Montreal
7. Pittsburgh

the reason why I like those choices is because the Hawks and Pens are my least favorite teams in the league (you can almost call it a very strong distaste for them), and Boston doesn’t irk me too much, but I like Boucher, Carle, and Briere enough to root for Philly.

Watching the Murray hot over and over, Murray makes no contact to Franzen’s head, it’s elbow to shoulder. Should he have gotten a penalty? Probably. But it wouldn’t have been a five minute one. Interference at best, elbowing or roughing at worst.

Agreed. He hit Franzen’s shoulder, and Franzen flopped to the ice and tried to draw a 5 minute penalty…because, you know, he’s a classy guy. The retaliation hit on Murray busted open his face, and all Murray did was skate (wobbly, I might add) to the bench. God, I’m glad I’m a Sharks fan…

The Sharks just had a big series win

and I have to think about FA…oh well…sports these days.

My thoughts on Buccigross’ article

1) Sharks will probably try to resign Blake for 3-4 million…you can’t really get a defenseman for any less and Blake has been pretty good.

2) Nabakov is probably staying if the Sharks offer him a reasonable amount…if not…we get someone else.

3) Here’s hoping Marleau has some sense of loyalty after the Sharks organization stood by him all these years. Maybe not a huge hometown discount but at something.

4) Jumbo will likely stay as well especially after what he experienced in Boston. Despite his recently success, he is still somewhat haunted by a reputation of not showing up. This will be exacerbated if he sign a big contract elsewhere.

5) Devon, Pavelski…they are restricted FAs…my sense is that the Sharks will sign them long term sometime next year.

by calbearjd on May 10, 2010 8:46 AM PDT reply actions

Response question to the public:

Has there been any talk of Blake potentially retiring? I’m just curious; that’d leave a bit of a hole in our D (and a hole in our third-period penalties) but free up some to keep Nabby and Marleau around assuming they’ll both take hometown discounts — I think Marleau certainly would, and Nabby most likely (seems more likely when I think about their letting him make his own schedule…)

Definitely agree on Seto and JoePa — barring a deal of unfathomable magnitude, I think the Sharks organization will pull whatever they can to keep these two in San Jose as long as possible. As much proclaimed through these playoffs, Pavelski is the future of this team.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting summer.

It’s purely up to Blake, and I haven’t heard anything about him retiring. However, if the Sharks win the cup this year, I don’t expect him to be back. He’s playing like his old self lately, though.

I think alot of this hinges on how set the Sharks are on their rookie defensemen. Demers has played himself into a starting job next year. Joslin and Moore have both played great in the AHL, and remember, Moore signed a two year extension during the season which is one way in the second year, so he’s definitely in the Sharks long term plans.

Lets not think of this for a while, though.

Fear the Fin: Sharing Joe Thornton's love of wooly mammoths since 2009.

by Matthew_Taylor on May 10, 2010 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed on Blake — I don’t imagine he’ll be back if the Cup comes to SJ. That said, it was my own thought so I figured I’d fire off and see if anyone else had similar thoughts.

Anycase, just some quick rosterbation prattling during off days. Now I’ll go back to focusing my fretting on Chicago’s likely-upcoming advancement and what that means for the Sharks now.

Halfway there, boys. Halfway there.

I would love to see Moore get a longer look next training camp

But since Worcester’s done, who do you think is the next guy on the depth chart to come up (if at all)? Or just ride it out with Hamburgers (who looked pretty good in game 5) and Leach?

If Blake retires, who do we think gets the C? Magical playoff run and big-time clutch or not, I’m not sure that it’s Pavelski quite yet. Maybe Boyle? It seems unlikely that it would go back to Patty.

That’s all basically impossible.

Between Seto and Pavelski getting raises (even if they’re restricted, they’re still FA’s and will want a pay check).

We’re up against the cap now, there is no way we can sign Blake, Nabby and Marleau (even if the later two take some kind of discount) and still retain Pav’s and Seto. Basically all but 1 of Blake, Nabby and Marleau are going to walk next year if we want to resign Pavs, Seto, Malhotra, etc.

Some money will free up...

Between Wallin-Huskins-Staubitz-Ortmeyer there has to be at least some money freed up to be able to keep all the important pieces. Wilson practically gave away Erhoff to Vancouver just to free up money, so I am sure he will get creative again.

by TnSD11 on May 10, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Huskins is still under contract next year and would have to be traded (still only making 1.7 cap-wise for a dman). Wallin is probably the short term replacement for Blake as far as I can tell, until one of the kids are ready, even then, I haven’t even considered him being resigned. Stauby and Orts make nothing. letting them go doesn’t free up any money because you still need somebody to fill their roster spots, which immediately takes away any savings you made by letting them go.

by U Guys R Good on May 10, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I dunno if they really let Malhotra go. They offered him 2 mill a year and instead he came to San Jose for 700k a year cuz he wanted to be on a winning team that had a shot at the cup. So Malhotra should definitely get a nice raise. I still can’t believe we were able to get a player like Manny (he was 1st round draft pick, 7th overall) for so little.

Yeah, there’s still time, but I heard he was one of the worst defensemen in Worcester – his stock dropped so low, that guys coming in from juniors and college near the end of the season were getting playing time over him.

Of course, he can still learn. But my bet would be on Mike Moore making the team if there’s anyone from Worcester. Or Braun, if he has a monster of an off-season. But the latter is more of a gut feeling than anything concrete.

Don't worry about it

I honestly don’t care about this free agent stuff. There will be time for the offseason once we’re eliminated (or not if you catch my drift).

Right now I wanna enjoy our conference finals berth and get ready for Chicago or Vancouver. I’m sure Wilson has a plan and we’ll be fine, he hasn’t let us down yet.

With all this talk about cap space, I think a piece on the NHL salary cap and how it affects the Sharks may be a good idea during the lull of the next 5-7 days (I’d be more than happy to help out with such a piece). More specifically, although I don’t think we know what the 2010-2011 NHL salary cap will be, we do know that the Sharks’ current salary cap is an internal one, and is approximately $15 million below the current league-imposed cap of $56.8 million. I guess the question to ask is, what’s the feasibility of a team increasing their internal salary cap? Obviously it’s dependent on a number of factors, including but not limited to the economy, the market in which the team plays, projected ticket/merch sales, and I’m sure many other factors. If I recall correctly, the Sharks organization posted a net loss last year, though that was offset by the many other revenue streams SVSE has their hands in.

The cap will remain flat next year, according to Bettman, but will go up in subsequent years. The Sharks don’t have a self imposed cap, as they are up against the NHL cap this year… hence the roster moves. Due to Heatley’s salary, I think they are actually above the cap in terms of salary paid this year.

And, as a policy, we don’t do those types of pieces during the playoffs. We’ll hit it hard after the playoffs are over.

Every since the 2005 season the internal salary cap no longer applies. The owners told DW to spend what was necessary. We have been near the ceiling for a while now. The team took a loss last year because we were projected to go further in the playoffs. For every additional home playoff game the team plays, SVSE makes another $1 million to use towards paying players.

Its all good. SVSE actually saved $4 mil in actual dollars since the Sens paid that half to Heatley. So SVSE only paid Heater 4.5 mil this year. Man, that guy was a steal, and he gets cheaper as the years go on. Please to enjoy the armchair GM’s bible.

Not really practical

First, that would make it impossible. What if a team without a lot of bloggers, like say the Preds, advanced far. The same blogger writes 4 Eulogies? Even the Sharks, I’m not sure there’s 4 different sharks bloggers who could be mean enough to write the eulogies.

Second, if you’re running a website such as PD, you need to have these things planed out before the playoff starts. It would be a gigantic pain in the ass to try and round up a new blogger every series.

is to have a writer from the team that hates the team being eulogized the most. Good fit for the Wings to have a Hawks writer do it, just like they would have had a Sharks writer eulogize the Ducks, had they made the playoffs this year. I think it makes sense how it is.

I dunno

Eulogies are all about bitterness and trash talking. One of the best examples was when Pension Plan Puppets wrote a Eulogy for the Habs last season, and Chemmy put in the hotline for Habs fans seeking comfort, 101010 (won nothing won nothing won nothing).

Rivals can usually generate more snark and hate. Plus, you want a blogger who has good knowledge of the fallen. Not to say Plank and TCY don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of hockey, but my bet is that they have far more hate for the Ducks than anyone else and if required to generate real bitter scathing prose about any team, the quacks would be it.

The Phoenix one was awesome. Best one to date…which kills me, because it was written by Wings writers. But I think that was the best part…they made fun of themselves as much as they made fun of the Coyotes, because there’s nothing you can really say mean about the Yotes. It was brilliant.

This one was ok, but as I said earlier, the best part is the Wings’ fans comments who seriously have no idea what the Eulogy is all about.

Just because you hit the obvious points doesn’t mean it’s not funny. It’s not like he said “Your fans are stupid and wear tin foil hats.” He took an obvious flaw and came up with some witting sarcasm on it.

I watch the roasts on comedy central and despite them picking on obvious character flaws they still do it in a hilarious way. Of course Larry the Cable Guy is just playing a dumb hick, and every roaster hit that point, but most of them did it in a way that was really funny.

Open plea to the Sharks Organization about TV

Please find a better fan-friendly network for your games, and drop Comcast and their not allowing fans to watch the Sharks games! Comcast signs up a channel or two with other companies, then turns around and creates new channels and switches the Sharks schedule to that new channel.
And for Comcast customers, after creating the new channel, they switch the channel number and move the games yet again.
Out here, in non-Comcast-land, we are not able to see Sharks games unless they are on Versus, which is a rare thing (not counting playoffs).
If you are under multi-year contract with Comcast, get on their backs and force them to stop screwing the fans.

I agree for the most part

being Directv and all, but what you’re asking for will never happen, especially with Center Ice available. Comcast makes money by having it’s channels exclusive to a region, because if you want to watch an out-of-market game, you have to pay more. Oh, and Vs. is a Comcast-owned channel, as those of us on Directv know from losing Vs. until the last 1/4 of the season. Again, they make money by screwing the fans, with the idea being if they screw you hard enough, you’ll pay extra to not be screwed (i.e. pony up for Center Ice).

by Chicago Shark on May 10, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

This had little to do with Comcast and a LOT to do with the Giants.

There were too many teams for just CSNBA to begin with (Sharks, A’s, Giants, Warriors, and Earthquakes), and when the Giants bought a stake in CSNBA it caused HUGE conflict of intrest problems. Within a year of the Giants investment in the channel the Warriors were suing and the A’s were looking to jump ship.

Pretty much the three other ownership groups (the A’s and Earthquakes are owned by the same group) didn’t feel comfortable with the Giants having control over which teams got front billing, were relegated to the B channel, or were sent to limbo. This was twice as true for the A’s, Earthquakes, and Sharks, all looking to establish themselves (or recover from a ratings slide after loosing Drew Remenda to Hockey Night in Canada). Being relegated to plus or having games canceled on a semi-permanent basis (as was happening to the A’s and Sharks when the Giants and Warriors were playing) was having a noticeable effect on all teams ratings and television profits. The A’s (in part by pressure from the Giants) were only beling allowed to show about 40% of their games a year.

The A’s/Earthquakes, who were in the worst position of the three non-Giants ownership groups, went out and cut a deal with CSNCA, who at the time was a backwoods network only carrying Kings games. The A’s cut a deal that would use the Kings black out in the Bay Area to give them the channel all to themselves, allowing them to no longer have to answer to the their chief rivals in the BA, the Giants. As soon as the jumped ship they were magically able to air over 90% of their games giving credence to the rumors of favoritism going on behind the scenes.

Once the A’s had CSNCA established in the Bay Area, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the Sharks would be the next to jump. Not only do the two ownership groups work closely together (SVSC will be running day to day operations of the Earthquakes Stadium) but the Gaints had been banishing the Sharks to CSNBA+ against the higher rated Warriors games.

The Giants thought they could walk in, use the station to promote themselves (like they do with KNBR), and the other teams would thank them politely for second billing and hand over wads of TV revenue. In the end they were the ones who caused the Sharks, A’s and Earthquakes to move off the channel by screwing the other four teams. Comcast is blameless in this one.

The Warriors are still suing as far as I know, but it may soon be a moot point since they could be bought by the Giants and moved to San Francisco.

Comcast could've made the channel available

in markets, not their own, who already have CSNBA, due to this flop, but they want the local cable co. to pay more for it, and thus, we are stuck with CSNBA and not CSNCA. When they made the switch, CSNBA had continued advertising that the Sharks games would be shown on CSNBA. The advertising/schedule continued for a couple of months after the switch, but the Sharks games were not shown.

Where is this an issue? I honestly have no idea how the channel availiability works. All I know is that in the Bay Area on Comcast, I get both. On DTV in the South Valley area, my parents get both. My friends who still live in Davis and Sacramento get both (although they get stuck with the Kings from time to time). Is CNSCA really not availiable everywhere in the local area?

Further North

CSNCA is not available up on the North Coast of California, but we still have CSNBA. NHL and “Hockey Night on Yahoo!” consider us San Jose market area, and blackout the games as they do, but we are 300-400 miles from San Jose. We’re not a Bay Area County. We are blacked-out because our main trunk line comes via San Francisco, which is in the Sharks market area, but we’re not. Businesses up here are part of Portland’ OR’s district/zone/division, and not San Francisco’s. We’re caught in the middle.

In that case you need to write/call your TV provider and ask them to carry CSNCA.

Two comments.

1) Is holding out for more $$$ a HUGE conflict of interest on Comcast’s part? Yes, in a world were the poor and middle class didn’t get screwed by rich people Comcast would be broken up and never allowed to have a vertical monopoly like they do now. Write your house rep and senator. But on the other hand, CSNCA is worth a HELL of a lot more with the Sharks, A’s and Quakes on it then with just the Kings and the price for it should go up.

2)Your continued advertising complaint makes absolutely no sense. Comcast has a vested interest in getting as many people to watch CSNCA as possible; the more people who watch it the more money they make and the more they can charge direct TV for it. There is only one party who has something to financially gain by trying to keep people watching CSNBA and not a channel showing their cross town rivals (who they are currently trying to run out of the Bay Area) , and that’s the Giants.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Continued advertising

Whether it makes sense or not, it happened. Schedules for Sharks games were listed as being shown on CSNBA for two months after the switch, and this was on CSNBA/CSNCA’s co-website. They didn’t change the schedule listings from CSNBA to CSNCA for two months.

I'm not saying it didn't happen.

Just that you are likely blaming the wrong party.

I'm blaming Comcast

because those listings were on Comcast’s website.

Thanks Threep for this explanation

I knew that it was supposed to be since the Giants bought a stake of CSNBA, but this really helped clear the air on the who’s/what’s/why’s/how’s

"If you're going to start talking about Joe Thornton then watch the freaking games because the guy has been an absolute dominant player in this series." - Drew Remenda

Ditto here

The explanation is very informative. Now, if we can only get a Comcast marketer in here to explain why they didn’t make the change available without asking.

I get screwed at home in san jose where I have dish network (basic package)

If there is a Kings game, they show that on CSN-CA HD and black it out. The Sharks game is on some random alternate channel in standard def. I also just realized that when I go home after finals this week, my dish package has no VERSUS!!!! I’m either going to have to purchase the channel for a month, or stream online. This sucks.

So i assume the Conference finals and Stanley Cup playoffs are going to be on NBC. Who are the commentators going to be? Is it going to be the same crew from the Olympics?

If JR ends up being one of the commentators it will make the loss of Drew ALMOST barable.

almost…

You're right with the ALMOST, but not CLOSE

But, JR has sold himself out, and reads only what they write for him. During the Olympics, as he was reading, he read “….Crosby is the best player in the world.” Does one think that JR really thinks that? Or, since the whole Olympic hockey NBC coverage was always focused on Crosby, that he was being a that’s-a-good-boy-read-what-you’re-told commentator?

Fair point. JR is a known OV fan. But he also knows what it takes to get paid. He’s just doing his job on that front. Frusterating? Yes. Unexpected? Nah…

This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

JR was being paid a lot of $$$ to read off the teleprompter.

You can’t blame a man for doing his job. When he had time to speak freely he spent a lot of it talking up Pavs (before it was popular) and making "wild claims about him like “he will be a monster.”

Teleprompter or not, he’s the best case scenario for the NBC games.

Most of the Conference Finals and SC Finals will be on Versus. I think NBC only picks up the weekend games.

Ouch...

Boucher left the game hurt. :( Poor guy, he’d been playing pretty well this postseason…

He had some great games as a Shark.

They do not have good luck with goalies staying healthy this season

Still, I’m rooting for a bruins-habs and nucks-sharks East and West finals, so go bruins!
