We keep on waiting (waiting), waiting on the West to change
With the San Jose Sharks still waiting on their third round opponent, a debate on the merits of having an extended period of rest has surfaced.
Receiving the most rest possible at this point is a net gain at this point in the season. Undisclosed and public injuries are prevalent right now, and with an already arduous 82 game regular season already in the books, fatigue plays a big factor in the players' legs. Habits by and large have already been formed, both positive and negative-- more games and practice serve little function in the long run, only helping to fine tune the areas that were lacking in the previous outings. Get your wins, get out of dodge.
At the conclusion of the first game of the Western Conference Finals, this question will be used to provide a quick and compartmentalized answer explaining the outcome. If the Sharks lose, they lost their edge with a week off. And if the Sharks win, they were able to receive the rest they needed. However, the fact of the matter is that these are professional athletes who know their bodies better than you know the palm of your hand. Their mental makeup is as good as it's been for awhile now. Results are all that matters at this point in the year, and hedging your bets by stating that the mental side of the game will suffer due to an extended break doesn't make much sense.
At any rate, on the docket tonight at 6:30 PM we have Chicago heading into Vancouver with a 3-2 lead in the series. The Blackhawks have been a hot mess of inconsistency since March of this season, going .500 down the stretch and struggling against Nashville in the first round. It took a miracle at the end of game five to avoid being a game away from elimination, and since then they've continued their hot and cold ways. A 5-1 shellacking in game one led to an offensive outburst in two through five, only to be followed up with a wet fart of a performance Sunday night.
Vancouver has also been anemic-- they looked lost at times against Los Angeles, dominant in others. Willie Mitchell's injury has been a huge loss for them on the blueline since the middle of the year, and with Sammi Salo at home with his kids for the time being, containing the Blackhawks forwards just got a whole lot more difficult for them to pull off.
If I was the Supreme Overlord of Everything Under The Moon, I would prefer it if the Sharks drew Vancouver, and not just for the "rest vs. rust reasons." A seven game series is obviously a positive, but there are some matchups I like a lot better against the Canucks.
You have to think the Blackhawks are due to break out of their current funk sometime soon, and if they do, it would be a return to the team that I've felt all season long was the best in the Western Conference when everything is clicking. Their defense is world class with two pairings who could give San Jose's top lines some major fits, and their forward group is just as good if not better than the Sharks. The one area where the Blackhawks would be at a huge disadvantage however, is in goal. Although Chris Osgood played behind Detroit teams who were built exactly the same way and has multiple Cup rings, Antti Niemi's pads (or lack thereof) are definitely an area where the Sharks can take advantage.
The opposite is what scares me about Vancouver. No matter how much grief Roberto Luongo gets for not being a big-game goaltender, there is no one in their right mind who can state with a straight face that he is unable to steal at least two playoff games and put his team into the next round. The good news is that Luongo really hasn't looked like himself this entire season, and seems to have trouble with inconsistency from game to game. Still though, it's Luongo. Counting him out has so much potential to put egg on your face I won't even delve into the possibility. Outside of him however, the Canucks can never seem to get the best of San Jose. Their forwards are obviously very good, but the cycle game that the Sedins like to play fits in well with a Sharks blueline that isn't especially quick put can muscle players off pucks in the corners. Alain Vigneault has moved farther and father away from the trap this season ever since Mattias Ohlund left, and while he may reinstate it with a depleted blueline, the question is whether or not he has the talent left to run it effectively is up for debate.
A revitalized Chicago team one step away from the Stanley Cup Finals gives me more concern than a date with Vancouver-- they're definitely the scarier squad for San Jose if Luongo continues his mediocre postseason.
Either way the cookie crumbles tonight however, San Jose is playing the best hockey out of any other team in the Western Conference right now. Both potential opponents have their perks (the Blackhawks inconsistency and goaltending, the Canucks depleted defense and more methodical approach), but it's something you can't avoid at this stage of the year.
Four wins away from a trip to the big dance. Wow.
Go Sharks.

Still not sure how I feel about this
On the one hand, there’s the distinct possibility of Sharks playoff tickets if we play Chicago. Based on our recent performances at the Madhouse on Madison, I’d almost rather not.
On the other hand, I’d love to take advantage of a depleted team with inconsistent goaltending in Luongo. If he somehow screws his head on straight these last two games, he might be pretty dangerous though.
The moral is, either team has its pluses and minuses in terms of Sharks matchups. Hopefully it’s a slugfest tonight, with lots of goals and hitting, going into a Game 7.
Because a week is a long time to wait, Go Sharks!
I go with the the Canucks...
Just because of the match up…Chicago is more of a speed team while the Cancucks are more of a grind it out defense team. Sharks already beat two of the latter in the Avs and the Octopi…

Both of these teams are good, but neither has been impressive during the post-season. They haven’t been consistent and haven’t looked as good as the Sharks.
I’m not saying it won’t be a tough road, but I like the Sharks’ performance in the playoffs so far much more than either of these two clubs.

chicago, even in their wins, hasnt looked great, it was more a product of vancouver looking awful or nashville being unable to score.
chicago’s speed and their transition game is pretty scary, but i think the sharks we have seen in this years playoffs (for the most part) can handle it.

Double D’s generally has a lot of Sharks fans whenever I go. They’re pretty big supporters of them as well – out of all their sports memorabilia, the Sharks stuff takes up this huge wall, while all the other Bay Area teams have a section of a wall or one or two jerseys. Double D’s has the entire top line including Heatley, Roenick, a Nabokov stick, a Shields stick, and a bajillion pictures.
When I went there during March Madness, we drowned out the Cal fans. And the Sharks lost that night. It was a good night despite the loss.

As long as they continue to beat the tar out of one another I don't care which we face
There are challenges either way, it’s going to be a hard fought battle. This is the conference finals, there are no easy teams left.
Looking at our regular season history I would want Vancouver, but then again, looking at our regular season history I would have never guessed this team could beat Detroit in 5. I expect McLellan will have them ready either way and we’ve shown we can beat the Detroit style game that Chicago plays.

That’s pretty much the kicker. With this Sharks team the way its playing, you can throw the regular season out the window. This team is clicking, and should be able to beat anyone. Does that mean they will? No, not at all. But this is the best shot they’ve ever had, with the best team they’ve ever had, peaking at the right time. Chicago or Vancouver will have a hell of a series on their hands.

Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
I’m fine either way.
If it’s Chicago, should be a great series, but with their problems with consistency and big question marks in goal, Sharks can pull through.
If it’s Vancouver, they have mad offense, but no defense and Loungo is proving once again that’s he’s not a clutch goalie, especially in the spring.
As long as we can avoid Detr… Never mind.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
Whether or not anyone wants Chicago, it’s in the Sharks best interest for this series to go as long as possible, and not just the 7 games but like McClellan said, have them all go into triple-overtime. I think the Sharks would fair better against a depleted Vancouver and I’d be surprised as hell if they pulled it off; I’ll be rooting for Vancouver tonight to not only win, but play a physical game and wear Chicago down as much as possible and if someone could knock Buttfuglyien on his ass in the process, g’wan girl.
Let’s hope for “and on the seventh game the Sharks did rest”
I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that, oh crap I quit drinking.
I want Vancouver. The Sharks match up well against them. However, I will say that this is not the same Chicago team we faced earlier this season. You say:
You have to think the Blackhawks are due to break out of their current funk sometime soon
But I don’t see how you have to think that….or that this is even a funk! Since the olympic break, they’ve been decidedly average. Nashville, while being severely outgunned, gave them issues, and only a complete breakdown by the Preds led to Chicago getting out of that series. Now they’re showing their true inconsistant form against a Vancouver team that completely fell apart in Games 3 and 4. See the trend?
Chicago’s getting their wins when their opponents completely melt down and hand it to them. San Jose is a much stronger team, physically and mentally, and won’t let Chicago knock them off their game so easily. Especially not the current Chicago that’s giving up 4+ goals a game (even in wins).
Chicago doesn’t scare me nearly as much as they did earlier in the season.

Like I said above, the Sharks are playing the best out of every Western Conference team right now. The Hawks are inconsistent, .500 since March, required a miracle to avoid going down in game five of the series. You say:
Chicago’s getting their wins when their opponents completely melt down and hand it to them.
I’m not sure that makes sense. You cite the Blackhawks inconsistency as a reason for losses, but then cite other team’s inconsistency as a reason for wins. They’ve shown flashes of absolute brilliance at times, a return to their dangerous selves. I don’t think you can rule Chicago out of the picture when they’re one series away from making a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals with a roster that is, on paper at least, just as good as the Sharks. They’re a real young team who has shown flashes of motivational problems, and I just don’t think you’d see those same traits in the WCF’s. They probably bring their A game there.
The Sharks are the best team in the West right now, but Chicago hasn’t played their best hockey yet. That’s where I’m coming from, and I doubt the article above really focused on the half of a sentence you decided to quote.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
All I mean is that the Hawks could have easily lost game 4 in the Nashville series (game 4, right? shit, it’s all becoming a blur…we all know the game I’m talking about), and they could have easily lost game 4 of this round (Vancouver completely melted down that game…it was a sad sight to behold. Chicago didn’t play much better, but at least kept their composure). All I’m saying is that there’s no reason to assume Chicago is all of a sudden going to figure everything out just because they got past Vancouver. They have yet to show me that they are the team right now that they were before the Olympics.
And of course your whole article didn’t deal with what I quoted and responded to. Your articles are so awesome and long and detailed and hit on so many points, it would take a novel to respond. And most of it I agree with. I just wanted to make the point that Chicago isn’t as terrifying, to me at least, as they were before. Obviously they’re a good team. They won’t be this far if they were not. I’m just not ready to freak out about them yet.

(only $56 and I could easily afford that then)
It was madness for sure. But in part due to the insanity surrounding Calgary and the busloads of Flames fans that arrived in SJ (along with Cherry and Co.). Sadly, the Sharks dropped all three home games in frustrating fashion, so I can only imagine what downtown would be like if they actually WON a WCF game!

I will tell you with a straight face
That I don’t think Luongo will steal 2 games if we play Vancouver. The pressure cooker of being Captain in Vancouver has messed with his head, and Chicago has proven, all you have to do to get him off his game is park someone in the crease.
Luongo has one of the best glove hands in the league, and he’s a big man who covers a lot of the net, but once you force him to move post to post, there are openings that can be exploited. Also, he tends to panic a bit. LA made him drop his stick a lot, and Chicago interferes with his ability to get to his spots and square up to the shooter.
Both of these strategies can be effective against him. Which is why Chicago will get past him and make our matchups with Vancouver moot. Chicago may be wildly inconsistent, but they are still just better than the Canucks.

I still think Detroit was the toughest possible matchup for the Sharks this postseason. Not saying moving on is a sure thing…far from it. But beating Detroit has given me confidence that they can beat anyone in their path…

Beating Detroit in five games was so huge. The Sharks are rolling right now and the demons, to some degree, have been exorcised like Emily Rose. If there’s a team playing better hockey in the West right now I don’t know who it would be.

Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
It’s hard to think any team in the East could win the Cup, especially if Pittsburgh gets knocked out. The remaining three in the West are just too good to handle.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
The biggest rallying cry for the East’s potential to win the Cup was the possibility for Pitt to just destroy the remaining weak teams and be well rested by that point after watching the West slug it out. Well, that hasn’t really gone according to script. The WCF coulds till be a slobberknocker, and the ECF could still be cake (I mean, is Boston or Philly going to put up much of a fight against either Pitt or Halak?). But it hasn’t been the cakewalk predicted for Pitt out East.

Lord forbid
the non-Penguin East should roll over and die. I’d like nothing more than to see the Pens lose, but the fact that Crosby eats big games for dinner makes me think otherwise. I could see Boston beating the crap out of the Pens for at least 4 games, meaning the East and West go into the Finals at similar levels of beat-up-ed-ness (if that’s not a word, it is now).

I don’t know— Luongo hasn’t looked the same this season, but Sunday night he was absolutely on. He’s historically been a lot better at home versus on the road, and if he can put in that type of performance in Chicago, I wouldn’t rule him out. The Sharks have historically struggled with big butterfly goaltenders (Anderson, Hiller anyone?), and Luongo wouldn’t see as much traffic in front if the Sharks end up playing them. San Jose hasn’t really done that this postseason despite their high goal totals.
Agreed on Chicago advancing though. I don’t think there’s any way the Canucks can manage to pull this off. Hopefully it goes seven and we get to see some more hockey.

Adjustments
It’s true that San Jose has not done a good job of getting traffic to the net this season, but we also never used the cross ice dump to enter the zone against the trap, nor did we focus on blocking shots against puck possession teams.
Those two adjustments, respectively, are what I believe won us the series against Colorado and Detroit. During the regular season, it’s hard to adjust game to game because your opponent is different. In a series of 4-7 games, the adjustments are easier because you know you’re playing the same team the following night. If the difference between us winning and losing was guys like Clowe, Heatley, Couture, McGinn, Malhotra and Blake parking like SUV drivers downtown in front of Luongo, I think McLellan gets it done.

Just an FYI
If the Sharks/Wings series went to seven games, my dad would have gotten tickets for us as a “welcome back, you finished freshman year” present, since I would have just gotten back in San Jose when Game 7 was supposed to start. Since that didn’t happen, I’m probably not going to go to any games because damn those tickets are expensive.
First time I’m happy that I couldn’t go to a Sharks game, playoffs or otherwise.

Franzen’s mangled body (he was out October thru February after a cruciate ligament injury) did not feel good clashing with countryman and Olympic teammate Douglas Murray in the quarterfinals series against San Jose. “He chased me every game and eventually got his big hit. I take it as a compliment,” says Franzen. Detroit was ousted despite Franzen’s four goals and six points in one of the matches against the Sharks. Great point
If the WCF is between us and Vancouver, I imagine there will be attempts at a teal spin-off.
Whether or not that’s good or bad is a question of taste.

"I would also like to see some Sharks fans give the VERSUS and NBC announcers a break. These men and women work very hard at putting on a top notch broadcast. Of course they aren’t going to shade their commentary toward the Sharks as we do.
"That’s expected. They are broadcasting to a national/international audience. But they are also my colleagues and many of them my friends and I know how much effort they put into getting it right and making it entertaining. Cut them some slack people, please."
Does this mean I need to cut Pierre McGuire a break? (grimace)

Mildly off-topic
But on the subject of hockey – Puck Daddy links sources saying the Avs are coming to the Pacific if the Coyotes head north… which means a division of FOUR Canadian teams (and Minnesota).
There had been debate about Vancouver instead of Colorado, but I guess cross-border travel (recently made more complicated for the NHL by TSA) trumps time zone issues.

Travel wise
Much prefer Denver to Vancouver. I’m sure LA, Anaheim and Dallas would agree.

I prefer Vancouver only so it’s less games during the regular season we have to listen to whining coming from Colorado. (yeah yeah, all that bitching made me sour on them a bit)

Actually
San Jose to Vancouver is only 2 hours – about the same as Denver, if not less. Sure, there’s the border to deal with.
Strategically, I think having Vancouver in our division would be brutal on everyone BUT the Sharks, as it means much longer flights for Anaheim, L.A., Dallas, and (conversely) Vancouver.
It’s a little bit like divide and conquer – but there are those who, not without reason, will say that travel burden is overrated.

At least Vancouver is in the same Time Zone. I’ve heard reports that it’s easier to handle long flights that are in the same time zone than cross country (and cross continental) flights across multiple time zones.
Rocking the Red since 1975
With Dallas in our division, it makes more sence for the division as a whole to bring over Colorado.

Dunno what this means
Looked ahead in the TV guide, and the NBC timeslot for Sunday hockey was 11AM-2PM, so we conceivably won’t be on then it looks like.
So, I was listening to HNiC Radio on the way home from work, and those guys hardly ever spend much time on the Sharks, if any. And when they do, they’re generally not overly complimentary. Therefore, you can imagine my surprise when they referred to the Sharks as “the prohibitive favorite to win it all”, and that in a casual, nonchalant afterthought sort of way. It was…interesting, to say the least.
..:Fear The Fin:..
The artist formerly known as cyoung
They ought to reserve the “prohibitive favorite” to win it all until the Sharks have won the Western Conference Finals.
That would be the case if anybody besides Pittsburgh advances to the SC Finals from the East.
Rocking the Red since 1975
I have to say
The percentage of actually knowledgeable people at HNiC is only about 50%. For ever Don Cherry, Jim Hughson and Scott Oakes, you have the likes of Bob Cole, Harry Neale, Mike Millbury and Don Maclean.
Good luck with that.

I'd just like to say,
I am a huge bay area sports fan and have been one all of my life. I was convinced in 2007, in Game 6 of the Warriors-Mavs, when the Warriors pulled the upset, that it would be the greatest sports experience I’d ever attend in person, but the Sharks game 5 was ridiculous. I just wish the ticket prices were not $75 dollars higher than any other NHL team, but thats the bay for you.
Playoff tickets in the Bay Area are actually MUCH cheaper than in other locales. You’d have to forego half a pay check in Canada to see playoff hockey.
