Ladies and gentlemen

- Chi-town, USA. Greatest anthem experience in the league, loud building. The organ is sweet and Jim Cornelison has some great, great pipes. Home ice should be absolutely nuts on both sides during the course of this series. Great atmosphere.
- Going to be annoying when Chicago fans start cheering during the Anthem in San Jose though. Listen for it. It will happen, and you will hate it.
- Dangerous transition team, prone to inconsistency. It's the second time in row a team has come off a big series win to take on the Sharks. And we all know how the last one turned out.
- Keith on Thornton all series. That will be a battle for the ages. They're pretty deep on the backend, but the Sharks can capitalize on Niemi's wild inconsistency. Whether or not they can pour on enough shots to do that is the question.
- Chicago doesn't like to play the physical game, and San Jose has shown a willingness to do so all postseason long. If they continue to pound the body and scrap away in the corners it will throw the Hawks off their game. Look what a relentless team did to them in round one against Nashville.
- If you try to play run and gun with the Hawks you'll get torched, but the Sharks again have limited their turnovers and have been content to dig in the corners. That's a big key to this series.
- Two years ago I looked at the potential for a rivalry to become established between these two teams. Both have some good young talent, and will likely be competitive both now and in the near future (with Chicago obviously having a little more shelf life). All we needed was a playoff series, and now we got it.
- Getting up the hate for the Hawks is kind of hard for me. Sharpie is a good guy, Toewser has a laser, Keith, Seabrook, Madden... list goes on, some classy dudes. Then you get into Kane and Byfuglien territory and realize it won't be that hard after the puck drops in game one. I swear, the median of douchebagitivity on Chicago is a three, but the mean is about an 8.5 with those guys included.
- Booing Brian Campbell is kind of lame, but whatevs.
- Sharks are playing the best hockey out of anyone in the Western Conference right now but holy hell I'm starting to get nervous. Should be epic.
- Six games minimum. Thought the same against Detroit, so what do I know.
- Western Conference Finals. Unreal.
Full series preview tomorrow afternoon.
God save us all.
Go Sharks.

I have to admit. Out of all the teams for the Sharks to play in the postseason, Chicago scares me the most.

Nucks would’ve been ‘easier’
after Chicago, we can take any team in the East, no problem.

The East is garbage this year.
I’m pretty sure whoever wins this series is gonna be guaranteed the cup.

Guaranteed is a strong word…and Halak might have something to say about that. But the point is valid…the East sucks.

The Pens are shitty this year. Crosby can be shut down.

personally I wouldn’t go so far as to say the Pens are shitty, but they’re not nearly as good as they were last year for sure. We can take ’em down in 6 or less.

I’d take the Sharks in 5 against any Eastern team.
I may still take the Sharks in 5 against Chicago, but only because I"m overly optimistic.

You may be second to last in the reader playoff prediction pool, but you know your Sharks. I feel like picking them to win in five is a necessity at this point. When you do this, good things happen.

I’ve been a little overly optimistic with the underdogs in the other series, as well…that one hasn’t worked out so well.
I’ve been surprisingly spot on in Sharks predictions I’ve been making this postseason, though…Sharks in 5 may make a reappearance in tomorrow’s full series preview!

As much as I want to see Montreal beat Pittsburgh
The Penguins do attract a lot of viewers. If the Sharks do win the cup this year, I don’t want it to be like 2007 Anaheim where no one even watched.

I wouldn’t worry about it. The one thing i noticed in the games against the Hawks this year? The Sharks didn’t seem to mentally show up for the games. Especially the games at HP. They kinda waded through the overtime loss at United, and the game they won but got outshot badly? That was the back end of a back to back. They have mentally checked out for a total of about 6 minutes this post season. (Those being the 6 or so in game 4 where detroit scored 4 goals). Funny that I think the media is already starting to pick the Hawks and I’m not really seeing it unless they change pretty drastically than what they have been in the first 2 series. They have been wildly inconsistent. Haven’t played well at home, and they only really took over Vancouver in Vancouver who lost 2 of their top D-men and 1 severely limited in game 6, mixed with the fact that Vancouver didn’t really have much offense going most of the playoffs.

Chicago doesn’t like to play the physical game, and San Jose has shown a willingness to do so all postseason long. If they continue to pound the body and scrap away in the corners it will throw the Hawks off their game. Look what a relentless team did to them in round one against Nashville.
This, I think, is the key. If the opposing team’s fans are calling the Sharks dirty players and whining about our hitting, the Sharks will be doing their jobs and should be winning.

Kris Versteeg said to Lindsay Soto in the post-game interview
(in referring to the Canucks injuries to Edler and Salo) Versteeg said: “…when they (Edler & Salo) go down with injuries, it definiteley helps us out. You have to give a lot of credit to the forwards, they were banging and crashing and creating those injuries and that’s what we try to do, we try to get in there and be physical and that’s what happened tonight.”
I don’t know, it sounds like Chicago wants a physical series.
Personally I would like to see Byfuglien & Murray get into a huge crash. Who do you think would come out better in an altercation between the two?
Talk is cheap. Also, admitting that they’re trying to cause injuries should get our boys fired up.

Talk is cheap.
Bingo. Chicago will say they want a physical series, but they are much, much better when they’re given open ice to work with. If the Sharks get into a run and gun, they’re screwed. The Hawks are just way too good in that type of game. Keep hammering on the physical game like we’ve talked about and they have a good shot at this thing.

I think that's more of Versteeg acknowledging where they got fortunate
Vancouver’s D-line was depleted, which is what I think he meant in that Chicago benefited from it. For the most part, I don’t think people really look to injure other players (okay, Todd Bertuzzi), but Salo’s injury was from a puck to the jewels & Edler’s knee was hurt when a CHI forward landed on it awkwardly – not the typical intent to injure type play there.
Plus the Sharks team, forwards and d, have shown a willingness to bang. If Chicago tries to play that game, Sharks win that battle.
Murray ALWAYS wins here too.
Personally I would like to see Byfuglien & Murray get into a huge crash. Who do you think would come out better in an altercation between the two?

Ran some quick numbers based on official rosters and "official" heights and weights.
Average Weight
Sharks – 206.76lbs
Hawks – 201.94lbs
The Hawks’ weight is skewed by Byfuglien’s herculean and debatable listed weight of 257lbs. Without him, their average weight drops to 200.3lbs. Add in the fact that he’s no Holmstrom, and you’re just left with a big baby that exaggerates his weight by at least a good 10lbs.
Average Height
Sharks – 6’ 1.3"
Hawks – 6’ 1.2"
Pretty much parity here.
Average Age
Sharks – 28.16 years
Hawks – 26.38 years
Yeah, the Hawks are young. The age gap isn’t colossal, and I actually think a ~28 year average age is ideal.
Years of NHL Experience
Sharks – 6.55 years
Hawks – 5.13 years
Again, I think our experience has served us well thus far, and will continue to do so.
Not conclusive numbers by any means; assembled them solely based on official roster numbers.

BUTTFUGLIEN in front of Nabby
nice numbers, but about buttfuglien being in the crease, does murray/blake hammer him out, or let him sit pretty(butt fugly actually) which was our tactic against detroit that kinda went 50/50 in my beer goggled eyes. Obviously he tries to screen but he doesnt seem as dynamic as a great screener and he sits there for rebounds which tonite looked like he had to turn 180 degrees to take a whack at…..im confident we can clear the pucks out, etc, just dont want a freak incident of his big body on nabby like boosh.

I think the reg season means even less with the Hawks because they finished all their games with each other well before the Olympic break. It was also during a bad stretch for us.

Essentially, do the same things they did against Detroit. Neutral zone turnovers were kept to a minimum in that series and the Wings transition game was limited. The Hawks have a lot more individual speed than the Red Wings (who are more of a team speed squad in that they move the puck fast up the ice), but if the Sharks continue to play to the fundamentals you mentioned they’ll do a lot to limit that talent.

Washington was the only team that scared me. Not Detroit, not Chicago, not Pittsburgh.
also i wanted detroit instead of phoenix because of bryzgalov. i wanted chicago instead of vancouver because of luongo. the sharks have only allowed….what…1 or 2 breakaways this postseason. vancouver allowed 4 or 5 in one game. if the sharks don’t turn the puck over in the gray areas, they should be fine.
It makes me a little sad that I’ll have to take Chelsea Dagger off my driving playlist for a round, but I’m optimistic that the Sharks will make it more than worth it.
I somehow manage to keep it associated with Top Gear in my head rather than the Hawks. Makes it much easier to continue listening to.

The analysis is wrong about lack of physicality
Obviously the Hawks aren’t focused on playing a Philly type of game of Nashville forecheck. But we absolutely punished Vancouver. Our checking line turned the Sedins into ghosts. Checkers like Madden, Burish, Eager, Brouwer Kopecky (!) and Seabrook know how to lay a hit.
Forgot about Toews and Hossa
They aren’t “grinders” or “checkers” but they rarely lose board battles and back check like madmen
Toews and Hossa are solid defensive forwards. They’re definitely on our radar as potential Sharks-killers.

Chicago doesn’t like to play that game, they’re much more committed to a wide open offensive flow where they can use their speed and skill to beat you. You definitely have some bruisers out there, and I’m a huge fan of Seabrook, but the Sharks as a whole have shown a greater willingness to go into the corners and grind it out.

Anyone remember the series (maybe Calgary in 1995) where the intermission “entertainment” was a crappy magician with a black panther (jaguar?) as part of his act. It was supposed to come out of its cage onto the ice, but it would not budge — probably not a lot of frozen ponds in the jungle. Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I've been liking how the Sharks and the Hawks have a little "thing" going.
And nearly every game (except the Thanksgiving Day Massacre) has been tight and well played. It’s gonna be fun for me, because after the Hawks, I follow the Sharks the most (thanks to my wife). There is a lot to like about your team, and when you get tired of Ryan Clowe, I would love to put him on a line with Toews and Kane.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
i’d disagree with that mainly for this. When the Giants were on equal footing with the A’s when they were at Candlestick (which i refuse to call anything else haha) The Giants have always had a larger group show up even in down years for true fans. Wouldn’t really put where the coliseum is as reason for that either because look at the Warriors and how well they draw no matter how the team is doing in that same complex? Although there are some things working against the A’s in this case. The Giants have been here longer, and with the Warriors (Just like the Sharks) they are the only team in the bay for their sport and are not having their potential fan base split. Kind of a side note, but for as big of a market as LA is, I still can’t believe that 3 teams who’s seasons happen at the same time all share the Staples Center. (Lakers, Clippers and Kings).

Pace is the key in this series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No joke. If we get suckered into playing the more uptempo style that the hawks play it will be a very wack series. Think about it…
They play the same uptempo style that the Avs play. We couldn’t control the pace against the avs and they are half as good as the hawks. If they get us chasing uptempo with them, considering they are twice as good as the avs, and the avs won 2 games, well do the math.
Chicago cannot and does not want to match us physically. That’s the route that this series must travel.
Slow and heavy wins the their place.
If we try to play fast, we’ll all be due for a fast shave
As a Blues fan with lots of expeirence with the Hawks...
I feel I should add my 20 Cent 2 cents.
- Fuck the guy who sings the Hawks anthem – he sounds like an opera singer-wannabe on steroids, and that’s coming from a music theatre person (don’t judge!).
- I’d be careful underestemating their willingness to play the body. Sure Kane’s a pussy, Hossa couldn’t make a clean check to pay his rent, and Ben Eagerforcock is the worst excuse for a scraper in the league, but they’re suprisingly physical when they’re made to be. It’s not their first instinct, but if they have to they will, and they won’t look half bad doing it. Be physical when you have to be, but above all control the puck and the pace.
- For the love of The Hockey Gods, throw the puck on Niemi any chance you get! The Hawks can be sufficating in their own zone, so SOGs will be at a premium. You can’t just wait around for the Perfect Chance, because if you’re lucky, you may get one or two of those a game.
- That said, when you get those Perfect Chances, you MUST cash in! The Hawks feed off momentum probably more than any team in the league. You miss The Big One, the Swagga Meta cranks up ten fold, especially for Niemi. If that happens, you might as well pack it in and try again in 48 hours.
- Keep in mind, all of these points are coming from a Blues fan. And I don’t have to tell you guys that the Sharks are much…what’s the word?…less shitty.
- Sharks in 7 – it’ll be a fun one to watch (especially when my finals are over and I can watch hockey every night guilt free)! I believe I speak for all of St. Louis Game Time when I say: “Help us San Jose Kanobi – you’re our only hope”
I know it's time for hockey because I've started singing "Don't Stop Believing" with the words "...born and raised in FUCK DETRIOT!!!"

I’d be careful underestimating their willingness to play the body
Very true. It’s not the Hawks’ first choice in style of play, but they can play physical and it’s typically a smart physical game, not hitting just to hit. The play comes first. Should be interesting an interesting match up.

former North Stars/long time Red Wings fans with some Hawks experience...
I agree with what you said. I’d also add that the Hawks have Hossa, the biggest playoff bust ever. That alone almost guarantees a Sharks series win.
Power Play & Turnovers
I’ve really been impressed with SJ’s commitment to play their system. They’re confident and getting good/even production from multiple lines (which makes them hard to defend). I think SJ will need to score on their PP and limit their turnovers, the number of odd man rushes against Nabakov.
The Hawks made Luongo look like a washed up goalie and destroyed the Vancouver D-men, with hard checks and a lot of offensive pressure.
If SJ plays their system and if they continue to work hard and get scoring from multiple lines, they do stand a great chance to win this series.
I didn’t pick SJ against Detroit, but was so happy they won. This series brings entirely new challenges, we will see what the hockey Gods have to say…
Go Sharks!!!
Luongo is really pretty overrated though. Mike Babcock made a good point on the radio today that I’ve been arguing since the Olympics when people ragged on Nabby and were praising Luongo. Babcock was saying that your Goalie’s play often is going to be a direct result of the guys in front of him. If the team is playing awful defensively and just leaving him out to dry the whole game, you aren’t even giving him a chance to STEAL you a game let alone win it for you. Nabby in the Olympics against Canada for example. Russia played no defense and basically did nothing but stand around and no matter who your goaltender is, if you have to go up against the lineup Canada had by yourself..what goalie is going to do well haha? Luongo on the other hand didn’t have to do a whole lot in the olympics but be average or so with how good their team played most of it. I just watched the guy and have never really understood why he gets the praise he does.

That’s true. Nabby has been rock solid this post season with the exception being period 2 of game 2 in the Avs series, and 6 minutes of period 1 in the 7-1 blowout. granted in Detroit, a majority of those goals he couldn’t have done much about.
