2010 NHL Playoff Preview: San Jose Sharks vs. Chicago Blackhawks
It's probably fitting that the two best teams during the Western Conference this season are set to play one another later this week for a chance to head to the Stanley Cup Finals.
On paper, the Chicago Blackhawks are the better team, and likely the best team in the NHL. However, they have struggled with consistency since March of this season, playing .500 hockey down the stretch. That much was evident in their opening matchup against Nashville, where they needed a miracle in the United Center to avoid going down 3-2 in the series to the Predators. Marian Hossa committed a five minute boarding penalty by sending Dan Hamhuis into the boards with roughly a minute left in the game, and the Blackhawks were forced to pull their goaltender while shorthanded to obtain the equalizer. Patrick Kane got one by Pekka Rinne with thirteen seconds left, and after killing a four minute power play in overtime, Hossa emerged from the box to get the game winner.
These same inconsistencies plagued Chicago against Vancouver-- game one saw them get run out their own building by a vicious Canucks attack; the Hawks then rebounded by reeling off three straight wins. The final two games of the series were equally mercurial affairs, with the finale last concluding with a resounding 5-1 victory.
San Jose on the other hand has been fairly consistent in their output from night to night-- it's their greatest strength thus far, and is a huge positive going into this series. Continuing to impose their physical play upon Chicago and grinding it out in the corners will be the only road to success. Against Detroit, a team who shares some similarities with Chicago in that their transition game will kill you, the Sharks avoided the neutral zone and blueline turnovers that plagued them during the regular season. It's definitely an essential , because trying to play run and gun with the Blackhawks will do nothing but get you absolutely torched.
Both teams boast an excellent crop of forwards who have done some serious damage this postseason, with scoring depth on lines one through three. The bluelines have both been consistent and Antti Niemi, despite being the obvious weak link on the Chicago roster, has shown that he is good enough to obtain wins behind Duncan Keith and crew.
The excitement surrounding this series is enormous-- it has the potential to be the best Western Conference Final since Anaheim-Detroit in 2007, a series that has defined the last step out of the West since the lockout. The Blackhawks walked into this season on a red carpet after making the playoffs for only the second time in nineteen seasons; the Sharks walked in on eggshells after a dissappointing postseason against the Anaheim Ducks the previous year.
They both walked out of the second round with a whole lot more to prove.
I have a post dedicated to special teams later this week-- Chicago and San Jose both have great PK's, and the Hawks led the league in shorties during both the regular and postseason-- but let's take a look at the three basic areas comprising both teams.
Forwards
Chicago is a hybrid of Colorado and Detroit in the transition game-- while the Red Wings don't possess a lot of individual speed, they move the puck up the ice quickly with tape to tape passes and can kill you in transition. Colorado on the other hand has a lot of individuals who can get around defenseman, but lacked the zone possession and maturity that the Blackhawks will bring to the table.
In other words, the Blackhawks bring the perfect storm of speed and skill to the table.
Captain Jonathan Toews leads the NHL in points during this postseason, and will likely see a heavy dose of Marc-Edouard Vlasic in HP Pavilion this series. He'll skate with Patrick Kane on Chicago's top line, and like San Jose, they've rotated the third forward in and out during the postseason. All three of these players are dangerous offensively-- Toews is primarily the playmaker who is defensively responsible and Kane brings the dynamic goal-scoring ability. They can beat you in open ice, work the puck down low, and utilize the high cycle more than any team I've seen in the league. Kane has a tendency to carry the puck all the way up from the halfboards to the point, and despite his smaller frame, protects the puck quite well. Toews is just an all around workhorse.
The question of whether or not to attempt to muscle the Chicago forwards out of the crease is already answered at this point-- as we saw against Detroit, Todd McLellan has decided that letting opposing forwards run around in front of the net is allowable as long as the San Jose defenseman can tie up their sticks in front. Whether or not the Sharks defenseman can do so is another question entirely-- Dustin Byfuglien comes in at a whopping 6'4, 260 pounds, which is about sixty pounds heavier than Holmstrom. That being said, Byfuglien is about as streaky as they come. All four of his postseason goals came in the last three games against Vancouver, and he's been an up and down player all season long.
The rest of Chicago's top nine forwards are dangerous as well. Kris Versteeg has a wicked wrist shot and good speed. Patrick Sharp has a knack for scoring big goals and has a nice shot, Marian Hossa can carry the puck in all zones with good goal scoring ability. Both of these players are strong defensively, and along with Toews, John Madden, and Dave Bolland, will chip in on one of the league's best penalty kills.
The list literally goes on and on when it comes to Chicago's scoring depth, and compared to San Jose, it is unlikely the Sharks will have the edge in this category on paper. As we've mentioned before however, consistency is the one area where the Sharks have an advantage. The keys to overcoming the Hawks offensive depth will be taking care of the puck in the neutral zone and not getting away from the physical forecheck that they have used to wear down teams all postseason long. You can't open it up against Chicago, because they will expose your blueline. And since the Sharks haven't played run and gun all postseason, they're on the right path to taking care of that aforementioned blueline.
It's likely the Sharks try and keep this to a three line series as it was against Detroit, giving Scott Nichol and company limited minutes except in shorthanded situations. We'll get to this later on, but I wouldn't be surprised to see seven defenseman dress again.
The good news is that Joe Thornton is beginning to get rolling after Joe Pavelski carried the team through the beginning of the postseason, and the penalty kill has been stellar as it has all year long. Continuing to pound the puck down low and work the cycle limits Chicago's ability to play with the open ice they crave, and if the Sharks are able to do that they will find success. With the top two lines beginning to play their best hockey at the same time, it's hard to envision how the Sharks would be completely outplayed in this area. The third line has been very good during the majority of their shifts as well, but will need to steal a few goals throughout of the series in order to keep the Sharks on top of the scoreboard. Couture and Malhotra are more than capable of doing so, especially if HTML is split up and Marleau rides shotgun on that third line with Mitchell up top.
Edge: Wash. Push goes to Chicago if they figure out their consistency issues.
Defense

It may sound like a broken record at this point, but San Jose's defense will be put to the test against a very quick Chicago team. A lot of that starts in the offensive end where getting pucks deep and battling it out in the corners will keep the Blackhawks from getting the puck up the ice on the breakout. The other side of the coin comes with what the Sharks did against Detroit-- funnel forwards from the middle of the zone to the outside, and break down their speed by pinning puck carriers along the boards.
As for the top unit, Chicago's is phenomenal. No introduction is needed to Norris Trophy nominee Duncan Keith, whose shutdown game and offensive acumen make him one of the most complete defenseman in the league. Brent Seabrook serves as a noteworthy compliment to Keith, bringing the snarl and physical play to the pairing. They will square off against Joe Thornton all series long. Great matchup to watch, and Jumbo will have a battle on his hands.
The second pairing of Niklas Hjalmarsson and Brian Campbell contains many of the same characteristics, with a lot less pop and flash. Brian Campbell, as most Sharks fans know, is a quick defenseman who can move the puck up the ice very quickly. What he has in offensive ability however is shortchanged by his defensive timidness-- getting on top of him physically on the forecheck will expose these inadequacies and lead to some prolonged offensive opportunities. The fact that he seems to still be dealing with an injury sustained in the latter end of the year after being checked from behind by Alex Ovechkin does nothing to help his case. Ryane Clowe should be in good hands protecting the puck down low with Campbell hanging on to him for dear life, and this is an area the Sharks can exploit in the offensive zone. However, Niklas Hjalmarsson is anything but a pushover physically and is a guy to really watch for. He's not going to wow you with any sort of offensive outburts, but defensively he's extremely sound. Definitely underrated.
Brent Sopel skates like Charlie Brown, hunching his shoulders and taking awkward strides. He also looks like the love child of Jody Shelley and Teemu Selanne. Either way, he's a decent depth defenseman and just plugs the holes. Same goes for Jordan Henry. Demers and Huskins probably have the edge in this category.
As mentioned above, I think McLellan stays away from the fourth line again this season. As we're all aware of, Jed Ortmeyer has been banged up for awhile and is floating in and out of the lineup. That leaves Helminen to fill that role, and when he's seeing lower end minutes, there's not a whole lot of use out there. Bringing Wallin into the fold as a seventh defenseman does a lot to balance out the depth of San Jose, and makes the unit stronger from top to bottom.
All in all, Chicago's defense is a really good group in the top four, and gets the edge over San Jose despite the Sharks playing well in this area all postseason. Chicago didn't have extremely low shot totals all season long for nothing.
Edge: Chicago
Goaltending
![]()
This is a pretty obvious call in San Jose's favor. Evgeni Nabokov has been good this postseason, none better than his game five performance against Detroit. Concerns about him being overworked were premature, and compared to Antti Niemi, will be a crucial player in this series for San Jose. He can definitely be the difference maker in this series for San Jose.
Niemi is a solid backup goaltender forced to play in a starter's body. However, the defensive unit in front of him, along with a crop of forwards who are committed to the defensive end of the ice, makes his job less difficult. The Robin to the Blackhawks defensive Batman. If the Sharks can crack the Chicago defense open they will be fine, because Niemi won't be stealing many games for the Blackhawks.
Edge: San Jose

It's going to be a barnburner of the series, and before this postseason started, I would have told you that the Blackhawks should be the clear favorites. And on paper, they probably are. However, so much has gone right for San Jose this postseason. Their defensive presence has improved and they have gotten some big performances down the middle from their top two centers. Everyone is clicking on the same page right now, and a huge five game series win over Detroit was a great way for the franchise to put some postseason demons behind them.
Am I concerned about the blueline? Yes. Am I worried that a Chicago team making a second straight trip to the Western Conference Finals will probably shake their inconsistency and bring it from the drop of the puck in game one? Yes. But do I fear what lies ahead? No.
It just feels that despite being a little less dangerous on paper, the Sharks have bought into what it takes to make a deep run. They're playing like the best team in the Western Conference right now.
Prediction: San Jose in seven.
God save us all.
Go Sharks.

Experience is something not accustomed to being related to San Jose.
They’ve proven halfway through that they have the testicular fortitude.
The question is, how deep are you willing to dive into your pain threshhold, even though it’s Game One? In the Stanley Cup Plyoffs, you better go kamikaze, or you get beat. Any hesitation, and everything that got you there blows up in your face.
Rest is a luxury. The only way San Jose pushes forward is if they come out nasty, and if they think more offensive than defensive. It’s been a defensive road for a team that’s a pure offensive juggernaut. But if you play with the top two teams being offensive-minded, and the Sharks adapting to a defensive-trap mentality in the playoffs, changing gears (if necessary) should fall on the Sharks side. As ghetto as that sounds, we’re at the point of ’who gives a flying you-know-what".
We could counter5punch Detroit, because of their age. Chicago has a bunch of young studs, but we can put them in their place in Game One, just like Montreal buried Pittsburgh. We can take the series right off the bat, in the scariest arena on the planet.
Too much rest says Chicago has a fighting chance in San Jose. 8 wins. Now, more than ever, one win sems to be the greatest catalyst I’ve ever seen.

Haven't heard this
the scariest arena on the planet
Remember when the Hawks whipped the Sharks in the Tank with one player tied behind their back?
Scary.
Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!
Sports Illustrated:
NHL players ranked The Tank as the hardest road arena to play in in the League, ahead of the Bell Centre and the Joe. Not sure if the Madhouse was even in the top ten, might’ve been.

Chicago is 5-1 on the road in the playoffs
We aren’t gonna lose b/c some Shark fans yell F-you many times, it’ll be b/c Thornton decides to play like a man
True
but San Jose is 5-1 at home. We’re not gonna lose just because the Hawks think they can hang on the road, it would be because your team finally screws its head on straight.

Because for a few years there, I think the NW was seriously competitive. But Edmonton, Minnesota and even Calgary are pretty much laughing stocks now.

I think the scariest arena on the planet has to be the Wachovia Center just because the potential to get knifed while taking a piss in the bathroom is so high.
In all seriousness though, yeah, San Jose definitely has great home ice advantage. Not a big fan of what an afternoon day game does for the atmosphere in the building (considering people are probably going to be mowing their lawns beforehand), but it’s the Western Conference Finals— I’m sure The Tank brings it like they always do.

The Wachovia Center was the only road arena where I was threatened with death, even if it was half-heartedly. I went to the restroom pre-game and got harassed, so after we started beating the Flyers, I held my piss all night – didn’t need to be nudged into the urinal.

i wasn't aware the november was relevant when talking about the playoffs
isn’t that what the rest of the league has told us these last 10 years?
Exactly the point
Sharks owned at home last season, look where it got them in the playoffs. Just because Chicago spanked us at home 6 months ago, doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the playoffs. I really don’t want to say it, but that’s a flash of that newfound entitlement from some Hawks fans: they think because they beat us in the regular season it’s a given that we’ll roll over and give them a free pass to the SCF in the postseason. I think it’s a very silly attitude to have going into the WCF, and is perhaps the reason the Hawks were somewhat surprised to see Nashville actually put up a fight; they were looking ahead to the next round before the first round had even started.

I don't think you've trolled
You may have tread the line with some of your comments (nothing close enough for me to seek out and quote) but it seems generally civil and more toned towards questioning some of our preconceived notions about our(selves/team) and your(selves/team).
'The good news is, there's a little more room in the penalty box; there's only five Sharks in there now.' -- Randy Hahn, VAN @ SJS 8 April 2010
Definitely not saying you're trolling either
And notice, I don’t generalize about all Hawks fans:
that’s a flash of that newfound entitlement from some Hawks fans
All I’m saying is that some fans have a sense of entitlement, be it because the franchise is starting to remember that it was once awesome, or the newer fans that started following since the games were televised have only seen winning teams (and forgot the last 10 years), and it rubs a lot of people the wrong way (red carpet, anyone?). Fact is, a sense of entitlement like that from some fans is a silly attitude, especially since the Hawks have done squat in the last 10 years.
Please notice that I make a point to not overgeneralize, because the Hawks fans I know who grew up watching Hull and Mikita would be very upset.

yea that and you can look as close as the last series. we got spanked around by detroit in the regular season and ousted them in 5 games in the playoffs. this is a different sharks team right now and until proved otherwise…the better of the two teams right now. (based on the fact that the sharks have played better and more consistent the whole post season and played Detroit, who even at the state they were at in the series, were a lot better team than Nashville or Vancouver.) Chicago has the better team on paper, but on paper in the playoffs means as much as what happend in the regular season.

this doesn’t mean i think the sharks are gonna take this series easy or by any sort of certainty. Just that these are two great teams facing each other in two currently different states of play.

You get the point. The Sharks can’t come out rusty in gasme One. But they can’t be defensive, either.
If you thought Detroit’s offense was badass, think again. Those guys work great as a unit, sure. But Chicago can turn a flubbed play into “dynamic-figure-skating-no-one-touched-me” shiz at the drop of a hat.

Not sure about Chicago
Having watched a good portion of both Blackhawks series, I thought they looked average against Nashville, and could have easily lost game 5. Against Vancouver, they pretty much wore them down, but Luongo looked terrible as did Vancouver’s D, as banged up as they were. Don’t get me wrong, all credit goes to Chicago for getting it done, but the Sharks are so much more of a challenge to them than was either of their first two round opponents. If we can win both games 1 & 2 at home, then we’ll be in the catbird seat. It is hard to quantitatively say how important a well rested and healthy team is, but the Sharks have that and I think at this point in the season is foolish to think that they will come out flat or give anything less than 100%. I’ll take SJ in 6 or 7 games. Sorry Chicago, but the Hossa curse continues…

But Hossa did used to play for the Atlanta Thrashers. How many playoff games have they ever won? I think they made one playoff series and got swept.
But I see what everyone means on him. On the losing side of the SC Finals two consecutive years.
Rocking the Red since 1975
What can I say?
As Chicago sports fans we are known for our curses. We bought this one for what was it 11 or 12 years?
I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.
- Rodney Dangerfield
Except the fact that the Western Conference finals is the Cup finals this year, with the joke that is the Eastern Conference.
With the 7 or 8th seed advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals.
I bet the Flames now regret leaving Atlanta. Gee, if the Flames hadn’t moved, they could be a Stanley Cup contender in the East. But since they moved to the West, they missed the playoffs.
The Flames are probably a better team than either Philly or Montreal.
Rocking the Red since 1975
He only gets to the finals in the last year of his contract.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I look at the Hossa curse
as just meaning that whatever team he plays for will never win the Stanley Cup as long as he is on the roster.
Nashville was a tough match-up
I realize it’s hard to watch every out of market game but Nashville is a freaking tough team. They roll 4 lines deep with a strong forecheck. Also their defensemen are world-class and way better than San Jose’s and Vancouver’s. Their strong crashing forecheck with suffocating trap style absolutely snuffed us out. Their style of play frustrates us mightily and did make us look very average.
As many of you saw, Vancouver was a much easier team to play against match-up wise. They only rolled two strong lines with questionable defense and a “world-class” goalie. Our depth destroyed them.
I was praying Vancouver would find a way to beat Chicago. The Nucks…not an elite team.

Plus our lack of injuries.
Chicago is skating strong. With just Campbell and Burish shaking off the rust and everyone else at full health. Kim Johnnson’s family would like to have his body returned though…
got called a Pavelski bandwagoner
By a blackhawk “fan” at work yesterday based on the fact that I have his jersey. He apparently has a Kane jersey but when I asked who is goalie was he didn’t know. Kane bandwagoner? I think so. Hope Pavs gets hot again so I can rub that and a Sharks in 6 series win in his face. Just wish it started tomorrow not Sunday. GO SHARKS!

Haha yea. I’ve only need a hockey fan for 2 years but always the Sharks. After watching about 3 games Pavs was my favorite. He also called Buttfuglyn “Bowlin” or something lol. I just can’t spend the rest of the time there listening to him say “blackhawks” everytime I walk by.
Also, even though I can’t stand the Pens or Crosby, sorry they’re out. I expected a better showing from them yesterday.

same here
relatively new hockey fan started following san jose for the 2007-2008 season, pavelski has always been my favorite. Even before he was rele sniper, not the biggest guy, but tough and worked hard every shift. Also makes very few mistakes
i’m a pretty new follower myself.
my dad always has the canucks games on at home, so while i was the kid i occasionally paid attention. i wasn’t a hard-core fan, but my dad explained the basic rules to me and i followed a little bit.
when i left home and went off to university in september 2008, the one thing i missed from home was having canucks hockey on. that’s when i started following closer, and was a die-hard pretty quickly. turned out i was a fan my entire life, just not a close follower.
online blogs has helped a lot as well. i followed Yankee Canuck at his old site before he moved over to SBNation and became a co-manager at Nucks Misconduct.

I'm totally a bandwagoner
I never watched hockey, but knew the Sharks were “my team” in that regard since they’ve existed. It wasn’t until my wife came along and got me watching that I got into it, and I’ll freely admit, it’s been really fscking easy to get into hockey as a Sharks fan in the last three years or so.
Now I’m sitting here watching Eastern Conference games, rosterbating, and picking apart ultimately meaningless stats in search of an edge in the current WCF. It’s been a wild ride.
'The good news is, there's a little more room in the penalty box; there's only five Sharks in there now.' -- Randy Hahn, VAN @ SJS 8 April 2010
That is something that REALLY bothers me about hockey fans
More so than any other sport I’ve encountered, hockey fans are elitists. Not all of them mind you, but more than say football, basketball, or baseball fans. At least from my experience.
I was talking to some guys at a bar earlier this season and they totally disregarded everything I said because they’ve been fans “since the Cow Palace days”. Wow. You’re old. I was 4 years old when this team was created. Even then I was a fan, but I was too young to follow the game like I do nowadays. I didn’t become a “hardcore” fan until a few years ago.
Clearly
You just have no heart or grit.
I just never cared much for sports, and grew up in a mostly-football house. Watching the Niners during that time did not inspire me to seek out more sports to follow, heh.

Sports were always on the horizon for me
but I didn’t really start following them closely until I got older. My Dad and brother were always the sport nuts in the family, so there were sports on around me, and I played sports as a kid.
College is what got me really into sports. The camaraderie and drinking beer and hanging out with the guys while watching sports was just a lot of fun.
That and one of my brothers has been a big Sharks fan for years and he would take me to games and that’s when I fell in love with the Sharks.
It just annoys me when people act superior just because they’ve been following the team longer or because they’re a season ticket holder or whatever. Gimme a break.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Often times, the elitists you describe just know an awful lot about one specific team because they’ve been following them forever, in this case, San Jose. That doesn’t necessarily translate to an overwhelming knowledge about the sport. In fact, I’ve often found it doesn’t. The thing is, everybody at one point was a bandwagoner. Nobody emerges from the womb a fan of a specific team. Obviously any given team is going to attract the most new fans during a period of success. That’s just the reality of it (unless it’s the Cubs or the Warriors, for example). It’s what you do once a team enters an extended rebuilding, lackluster, or just plain awful phase that defines you as a fan.

Actually, my dad held me up to the TV when I was less than a day old, showed me the Dodgers playing in the postseason, said “Look Patrick, those are the Dodgers, they are good.” I’ve been a fan ever since.
So, maybe not straight from the womb, but that’s probably as close as you can get! :-P
The thing is, everybody at one point was a bandwagoner.
The Sharks are a different case for many fans today, because most of us were alive when they came around. So many, many people have been Sharks fans since their inception…even through the growing years. I’d contend that regional ties have a much greater correlation to what team you become a fan of than anything else. Yes, winning will always draw in the casual fan. But if you grow up loving baseball, or loving hockey, or loving football…you’re most likely going to cheer for the team in your area, whether they are doing well or not.

In some cases though… parents draw you to certain teams… for example, my father lived for a while in Pittsburgh, and therefore I was raised to like those guys…
However, my father is a pretty big Giants fan, but I took fandom of the A’s – in turn converting him. Kinda backwards but rad.

My baseball teams, and my basketball team, I cheer for them largly based on my dad. He grew up in LA, raised me as a Lakers and Dodgers fan. But we lived in the Bay Area. He wasn’t about to make me a Giants fan, so we went to A’s games. A’s, Dodgers, Lakers. Boom.
I ended up picking up hockey on my own when the Sharks came to town. It was really my first exposure to hockey (I think I was 9 or 10 at the time), and I loved it. My parents weren’t huge fans, though. So I’d watch in my room, but rarely got to games. I got to some games in High School, once I could drive and get myself to them. Once I got home from college, and had a job and money, I started getting partial season tickets and such, and here we are.
Parents can be a huge influence…but everyone evolves differently. And now we’re all hockey fans! And it’s wonderful!

See, in addition to greatly influencing one’s religious beliefs and future political leanings, parents, especially dads, also have a tremendous amount of influence on whether or not their kids follow sports and if so, which teams. My dad has always been more of a bohemian and intellectual, and was never a sports fan when I was growing up. I discovered and got really into my two favorite sports (and teams) through the influence and camraderie of friends. My brother got me into hockey, and a group of friends in the Bay got me into basketball and the Warriors.

Disagree; my son was born a Sharks fan. His first required in-crib comfort item was a teddy bear wearing a Sharks shirt (followed soon by a teal bear with the logo stitched on). He’s now 2, and has a Sharks stick and puck he plays with regularly, and a jersey he likes to wear during games.
He also yelled “Joe Pa!” when the Canadiens scored last night. I’m not sure what that means.

If he’s been watching this postseason ,he probably thinks that means “goal,” but he gets a pass – he’s 2, can’t read the backs of jerseys yet. =)

I think this is annoying too. But it’s also annoying when fans who only because fans of a team two years ago becuase they were winning start talking shit about your team, without knowing any of the history of their own team, or bothering to learn about the sport.
If you take the time to learn about your team, learn about the sport, and are truly a fan…then it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a fan for. The mark of a true fan is one who cares enough to learn about and appreciate the entirity of one’s franchise :)

I agree
Those people are annoying too.
I’m more referring to some asshole Sharks fans I’ve encountered over the years. We’re both fans of the same team, we both know a lot about them and the sport (not that I know everything, I’m willing to admit), but because they went to games at the Cow Palace they talk down to me. I was trying to have a conversation with a couple guys who were friends of a friend and we were talking about the Sharks and it was like everything I said they just shot down and said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about. We’ve been fans since the Cow Palace days.”
This was really just an isolated incident, most of my interaction with fans is very friendly and pleasant, but it really bothered me.
I dunno, just a pet peeve.
I understand what you mean; elitism is the last refuge of an obscure sport.
I only get bristly and trot out my oldschool cred when people say that no one in California could possibly know anything, and we’re all bandwagon fans, etc etc. Full porcupine mode comes naturally, if too aggressively, then.
But in reality? Hockey needs fans. All kinds of fans. I’m tired of the whole damn argument. WE NEED PEOPLE. CARING ABOUT HOCKEY. EVEN IF THEY PRICE ME OUT OF TICKETS. We need to get over our damn selves.
/end rant
In Dinglebarn We Trust
I don’t really mind bandwagon fans, as long as they don’t immediately delve into unfair stereotypes with no facts to back up those assertions (trade Marleau, Big Joe is a choker etc). If they’re pumped about the team and want to see players succeed, more power to them.

sharks in 7
chicago is better on paper, but it’s a good thing hockey played on ice
but if the blackhawks play like they did in the 1st 2 rounds, then i say sharks in 5
MeThinksSports hasn't been updated since 2009...i think...
yeah this whole “better on paper” thing didn’t work out so well for us last year huh? or the Caps and Pens this year. :)
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
I just don’t see how Chicago is better on paper. I guess they are, because they are closer to the Eastern time zone and get love, but fact is:
Joe Thornton > Kane … and if you are going by stats: (89 pts to 88 pts)
Marleau > Toews (83 to 68)
Heatley > Hossa (1 pt/g , less than 1 pt/g)
Boyle == Keith
Nabokov >>> Niemi
so explain to me again, how are they better on paper??
let’s not be a homer now. Hawks have more wins than the Sharks (okay by 1), they also played very well against us this season. they have been considered the better team by many this season and to underestimate them would be a huge mistake.
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
has nothing to do with being a homer. it has everything to do with the sharks being the better team. As I pointed out. Our stars are better and more established. Our 2nd line is just as good if not better than Chicago. They may have a slight edge on the 3rd line except for Malhotra… they have a better top 4 D (not overwhelming though)… and the sharks well, have a much much better goaltender.
So once again, how is Chicago better on paper? Because the media declared it so?
they played ok against us… They won 2 in OT (regular season OT games might as well be considered a tie because of the silly 4 on 4 and Shootout)… and they scored 3 SH goals in one game, because the Sharks didn’t play well… I wouldn’t call that domination by any means.
I would call that 7-2 loss domination. But that happens sometimes. Occasionally you’ll have a bad game against a good team and you get dominated. That doesn’t mean they’re objectively better.
Whoever wins this series gets the right to say “My team is better than your team.” At least for a year. I’m confident that it will be the Sharks.

I don't think the Sharks/Hawks ever reached the shootout
that being said, based on the regular season I get the feeling we’ll experience a couple of OTs in this series… and quite honestly I don’t think I’ll be able to handle that anymore.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

This is the “hockey is played on ice” part, IMO. Comparing stars has little to do with what a team looks like on paper. There’s depth issues, and the SJ Defense has been a question all year — Boyle (and sometimes Blake) aside.
I don’t think either team has a clear, breakout advantage over the other, but if I was a fan of neither team, I’d likely say Chicago was going to be victorious — though the recent Sharks play might change that opinion.
'The good news is, there's a little more room in the penalty box; there's only five Sharks in there now.' -- Randy Hahn, VAN @ SJS 8 April 2010
I agree there isn’t a clear advantage on either side, but certainly Chicago doesn’t have the advantage.
Once again, I appreciate that the “story” that is the Chicago Blackhawks has been rammed down your throat by Melrose and Co.
Even Melrose, in the same breath as picking the Hawks, has said SJ is the best team on paper
Heh
I’ve never read anything by this Melrose, aside from what’s been quoted on this board. I don’t pay attention to national media. Only things I read are FTF, some stories from Puck Daddy (who I take with a tub of salt), and Dave Pollak.
I’d still give them a slight edge as an outsider, but from where I am now, I give the edge to the Sharks. I’m a rational homer; I also think “on paper” is a bad way to look at a team.
'The good news is, there's a little more room in the penalty box; there's only five Sharks in there now.' -- Randy Hahn, VAN @ SJS 8 April 2010
I would say there is a clear advantage to San Jose based on play thus far into the post season. The Hawks have not looked good in a lot of their home games this post season. If it weren’t for Nashville making some boneheaded plays and sitting back on their heels just trying to ride out the clock, it would look worse. Not taking care of your home building in the playoffs can catch up with you.

"Even the Swedes are getting mad."-Randy Hahn
"It's very cozy in the sin bin."-Randy Hahn
yeah...
they’re actually much more confident than wings fans and i mean….
Red Wings in the last 15 seasons:
15 playoff berths, 11 division titles, 6 finals, 4 cups
Blackhawks in the last 15 seasons:
6 playoff berths, 1 divison title, 0 finals, 0 cups
Why are they so damn cocky???
This is the one huge reason why the Blackhawks have rocketed up my “hate list.” Their fans have this completely undeserved sense of entitlement…having won absolutely nothing for the last 50 years. I just tell myself it’s because they’ve only been fans the last two years, and have only seen this team win and being on the cusp of actually winning something.
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

I hate the Ducks, but I often attend games there and always talk very respectfully to the Ducks fans in attendance (all 6 of them). What can I say? All they have to do is point at the banner and I lose the argument.

Hah.
I get the point there.
To be fair, though, we’re all expected to be optimistic about our respective teams. Nobody’s going to venture into “enemy” territory to say “Man, you guys sure are gonna kick our asses!”
Also, I’m a relatively new fan. I’ve never seen the team get this far, so my confidence is unspoiled by experience. Besides, we’re mostly comparing generalities of Hawks fans vs generalities of Wings fans, here. Kind of a weak argument.

Both teams have had great years. If ANY fan of EITHER team comments on ANY site that they think their team is gonna lose this series, well, I just don’t get that at all.

Hawks fan/blogger here...
The keys for the Sharks is to going to be screens and creating turnovers on the forecheck – those are the two things that lead to the Hawks allowing goals.
Also, use home ice to get matchups. Vigneault blew his series by not moving Thing 1 and Thing 2 away from Dave Bolland’s line, which effectively got them shut down.
The Hawks will try scoring by using quick transitions, and lots of back-door plays. Sometimes they get a little too cute, and it costs them scoring chances.
Should be fun.

The Sharks have been pounding the forecheck all season long, and that was a big factor in winning the series against Detroit. Seabrook and Keith will be fine here, but Campbell is definitely a players the Sharks are going to target as this series goes along. Tying up those pucks in the corners limits the Hawks ability to get their transition game going. It’s a huge factor in keeping their speed in check.

kudos on the preview
I’m Fwding a message from an SCH guy blocked by the FtF waiting period. His name is Scott13 and he wanted to say he his might impressed with this here preview, very well done.
I myself agree. We all know our own worst enemy is the Hawks themselves, though I cringe when i hear that “best team in the NHL”language, as we haven’t proved that yet.
The only thing I might disagree with is giving Nashville their due. The folks at OtF warned us (and they were right) that the Preds defensive play matches up better against the Hawks. I myslef was much less scared going into the Canucks series than vs. the Preds b/c Vancouver’s pace plays much more into Chicago’s hands. Nashville is a defensive wall, and Shea Weber is a SCARY guy. But with the Sharks, i feel like it’s so much more of a coin toss, the teams are pretty even.
can’t wait for Sunday.
John Madden
If he can work his voodoo hex magic against Joe Thornton again, we’ve got a problem. This is where I most worry about Marleau and Heatley not being 100%. Jumbo is finally rolling, but if his linemates can’t keep up with him, he’s easy to shut down, even though he’s playing like a beast. He’s such a sweet set up man that if he has no one to set up, and he’s being smothered by Madden and Keith, we REALLY need someone else to step up.
Round 1 was Pavs, Round 2 was Jumbo. Who is our Round 3 hero?
Everyone’s sick to death of the lesson of the Chinese character for “crisis” but it still applies. Half is danger, and half is opportunity. It’s time to seize it.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I had a reply, but then it went away. Salient points: Extended rest should help Patty and Heater, Jumbo needs to keep truckin’, and we need some more pitch-in from Pav’s linemates to take this one all the way.
Also, the “crisis” thing is a misconception, and I read a pretty interesting article on that topic recently explaining how it came to be, why it was wrong, and why everyone “loved” it so much.
'The good news is, there's a little more room in the penalty box; there's only five Sharks in there now.' -- Randy Hahn, VAN @ SJS 8 April 2010
we need some more pitch-in from Pav’s linemates to take this one all the way.
Agreed. They’re playing well, but not getting the rewards, at least in the goals column. However, I have to think that Seto’s gonna cash in soon with the quality of his scoring chances he’s had in both series thus far.
"If you're going to start talking about Joe Thornton then watch the freaking games because the guy has been an absolute dominant player in this series." - Drew Remenda
- Joe Thornton, 2nd Round: 3G, 5A
Pavel Datsyuk had a lot to do with Pav's decline
Which is again why a guy like John Madden worries me. He and Joe have a history, so if Madden can negate Joe, and Toews washes out Pavs, then I think we have problems. We need to win at least one of those matchups, AND really make Keith and Co. play hard minutes.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I"m thinking
if that happens then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to move Patty down to the 3rd line and even out our scoring depth.

I wish they would do that. Patty or Heater, one of the two. Heater and Couture looked good together, actually. McL seems pretty committed to keeping HTML together, though…

Like I said in the preview, breaking up HTML is a good way to balance out your depth and get one of your big goal scorers (Heatley, Marleau) away from Keith and Seabrook (who are a better pairing than Lidstrom-Rafalski). I like Marleau on the third line because he’s probably the most versatile forward on the team and can play with anybody.

John Madden likely won’t be shadowing Thornton all series— Chicago rarely got that matchup in San Jose this year, and only played him for about half his shifts against Jumbo. Toews probably gets a lot of shifts against Jumbo.
Madden is world class though, and one of the centerpieces in this special teams article I’m working on. TCY and I have been huge fans of his since his days with the Devils. Great defensive forward, and a great pickup to fill Pahlsson’s shoes in the playoffs.

Sweet, series prediction time!
First off, I have predicted Sharks in 5 two rounds in a row. The Sharks won in 6 in the first round, in 5 last round. The first round saw a stupid, fluke loss, though. It could have easily ended in 5. So Sharks in 5 has been rather successful! But is it the smart choice this round? Let’s see.
First off, the Sharks need to continue to hold serve at home. Home Ice has been a huge advantage for them ever since the turd they laid in Game 1 of the Colorado series. Last 5 home games:
Game 2 v. Colorado: Sharks win 6-5 in OT, coming back from a one goal deficit 5 times. The legend of The Big Pavelski is born.
Game 5 v. Colorado: Sharks win 5-0. First game that ended with a greater than 1 goal margin.
Game 1 v. Detroit: Sharks win 4-3. Hot start in the first leads to key win to open series.
Game 2 v. Detroit: Sharks win 4-3. Sharks come back from one goal down in the third to win.
Game 5 v. Detroit: Sharks win 2-1. Sharks win series, Tank hits 120db, Zero loses voice and hugs strangers.
21 goals over the last 5 games at home. 4.2 goals per game. That’s pretty outstanding. They are finding the back of the net with regularity. They have also been drawing more penalties than they are taking…mostly due to their size and speed. This is the second key point. Chicago is a fast team. We are a more physical team, though. We probably won’t draw as many penalties due to out skating someone…but we could get some from our physicality. Drawing more penalties than we are taking would be a good habit to continue.
Finally, the Hawks have not been great at the UC this postseason, but have been money on the road. The Sharks have been money in the Tank (as evidenced above). The Sharks need to utilize the last change (as McL did very well against Detroit) to open up the ice for our scorers. If the Sharks can continue to make the Tank happy, this series could be over in a hurry.
The Sharks win 2 at home, Malhotra-Couture comes alive with some clutch points, and The Big Pavelski returns.
This series terrifies me, but you knew exactly what my prediction would be before you even started reading this thing…
Sharks in 5!

Tangibles vs. Intangibles
Home ice is key for two reasons, faceoffs and last change. The Chicago/Detroit parallels run deep, and I think no more so in FO% at home for us. In Detroit, we were even. At home, we were definitely ahead. Much easier to win the game with the puck on your stick as opposed to not. Also, I definitely want to see us matchup the way we want on Chicago.
Patrick Kane has found his groove this playoffs, but I still think if you can get him rattled a bit, he’ll try to do too much on his own. And if we can keep Chicago pinned a bit and deny them the puck, the breaks will go our way.
I still don’t know what to make of special teams, as there weren’t a whole lot of penalties either way in our regular season games with Chicago. But, then again, we did give up 17 goals in 4 games to them, so maybe we need to take some!
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
The only thing, in my mind, that doesn’t make winning the first two games at home imperative, is the fact that Chicago has not been very good at home this postseason…and the UC is not the Joe. The Sharks should be able to win multiple games on the road if need be.
Still rather they just won at home, though….

I’m pretty sure the Sharks won’t bother trying to rattle Kane. Last season Vancouver tried it, and he finished them off amid a shower of hats.
The Tank isn’t going to rattle the Hawks, as I’m sure they remember winning 7-2 in there this season. Neither building will be a factor.
If the Hawks make mistakes, they will lose.
Enjoy the meatball element that permeates the Chicago sports fan (and supplies us with endless material) – every loss dooms the season and every win is proof the Cup is ours. Guh.
HOCKEENIGHT.COM...home of FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS and the HOCKEENIGHT PUCKCAST!!!
The Hawks haven’t seen The Tank in the playoffs, though. It’s a whole different building right now. Also, I don;t think the Tank will rattle the Hawks, but it definately energizes the Sharks…which is where the “home ice advantage” works into the equation with this team.

Stop.
These are professional teams. Canadiens won Game 7’s in out-for-blood crowds of Washington and Pittsburgh. We clinched in Nashville and Vancouver. You guys clinched in Colorado. Yes, it’s nice to have home-ice but I do not see a distinct advantage.
The professional teams are the ones who voted the Shark Tank as the most intimidating place to play on the road.
That said, the fans aren’t the difference-maker when it comes to “home ice advantage”, and even if they were, it’s still “advantage” — not “guarantee”.
Nobody is claiming that the noise level of the Tank will win the series, or even a game. Not sure why you think the concept of home ice is such a touchy subject ….

I think more emphasis is put on it than is due, to be sure, but there’s still something to it — if only for the last change and other tangible differences. The rules of the game are set up to favor the home team, so it’s on the travelers to make up for that with a strong showing.

Bingo
Last change is the main thing. If TM creates mismatches and Sharks deliver then home ice matters.
I just don’t see the giant benefit from fans. Look, yesterday Pens fans were nuts and ready to kill. But Habs score a minute in and crowd is stunned, jobbed, mud /Pensblog. Fans are too easy to turn into background noise.
Agreed
From what I’ve read from players, the sounds of the crowd fade out while you’re on the ice to the point of irrelevance.

I think this is a false statement...
Especially when going into a critical draw on a powerplay, say.. at a crutial point in the game…
Having played hockey, I can say, that having some crowd support, people screaming for you… that rush you get just makes you that much more determined to do your best… During play? it might fade away a little bit… but going into a play, emotions run wild when the crowd gets on your back…

Agreed
On the bench, I think you hear it. During stoppage, I think you hear it. I’m just basing this off what I’ve read in player statements though, which seem to lean towards the thought that once the action is going, once the play is on, it all fades away to the moment.
That’s not to say that the crowd support has no effect, just that it seems the players view it as less an impact as most fans prefer to believe they’re having.
Hell, I scream at my TV because I’m sure it’ll help, ha.

Home ice may not matter when one team is clealry better than the one
However, in a series like this…any and every advantage is important.
Hawk caught a huge break last night when Philly pushed to a game 7.
Well how do you explain the better team losing in game 4? Shit happens? Maybe ‘shit happens’ explains why Detroit lost at home in game 3, and the Sharks’ 3 home wins can be attributed to the advantage of playing at home.
Either way, the home team does have a distinct advantage. The Sharks will take advantage of all the benefits of playing at home, whether it be with line matchups, face off wins, or extra energy from the crowd. Hearing that the Hawks don’t play as well at home makes me think they don’t know how to take advantage of playing at home the same way the Sharks do, which gives the Sharks a big advantage in the series especially seeing as how a potential game 7 will be in the Shark tank (1ST SEED, SUCK IT!) lol.
Hearing that the Hawks don’t play as well at home makes me think they don’t know how to take advantage of playing at home the same way the Sharks do
So a team with the 2nd best home record in the west and 3rd overall over 41 homes game in the regular season suddenly is a bad home team because they went 3-3 in a 6 game sample?
But then our 5-1 road record in the playoffs is also discounted? Ack.

Playing a 7 game series against the same team is a lot different than playing random teams throughout the regular season; and it’s not like the Blackhawks’ home/away records are any better than the Sharks’.
Playing well at home in the playoffs can imply that: the coaches are doing a good job of line matching or that the players know how to take advantage in the faceoff circle.
Playing well on the road doesn’t mean much of anything, especially if you aren’t playing well at home as well.
Way too much made of home ice here
Year after year, the Sharks have squandered home ice and their scary crowd.
Now, they make the WCF, and home ice becomes a “distinct advantage.”
In the 5 Hawk post-season series over the past two years, home ice has meant next to nothing.
In my opinion, the only time home ice really means anything is if the series goes to seven games, and even then, the benefits are marginal (ask Wash., Pitt, Bos, Phx.)
Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!
Playing well on the road doesn’t mean much of anything, especially if you aren’t playing well at home as well.
Since it doesn’t mean much of anything, we’ll take the road wins, you can have our home games.
Here’s a line from Dances With Wolves that seems fitting since we are the Blackhawks…

You're right
The best team will win the game each night. But “the best team” means “the best team that night” and if playing on home ice makes our guys play “better” then there is an advantage in playing at home because we have a better chance of being “the best team” that night.
Depends on the team
Home crowds can definitely affect a series: See 2009 playoffs between Warriors and Mavs…
It's not a hockey/basketball thing
It’s a team thing…Mavs were soft and prone to being rattled (some would say that about the Cavs). Jordan’s Bulls could win on Mars if they had to…
There is something to be said about past Sharks teams gripping more as they went down in series or lost momentum. So far this playoffs…Sharks have avoided that (down to Colorado and won; getting thrashed in game 4 with the Octopi and winning game 5.)
Wow, clearly I struck a nerve. Are you telling me to stop being a Sharks fan, on a Sharks board, making a perfectly valid point in defense of my team? Really?
Did not expect me saying that the Sharks are energized by their awesome fans would get someone so butthurt…

My big take is being cautious
about comparing the Regular season to the post season, and one series to the next. CHI-VAN split the reg. season 2-2, when the Hawks were playing their best, and Van not so much, but win 4-2, taking all 3 from the best home team in the west.
Boston had won 7 of 8 postseason games and was 5-0 at home before the Game 5 loss to PHI and now is in a knife fight for game 7 after loosing 3 straight.
MTL was 1-3 vs PIT in the regular season, but Sid is now watching us.
I do not think how either teams previous series will indicate the play in this one. The match up are just really not comparable (CHI =/= COL/DET; SJS =/= NSH/VAN)

Great preview, Mr Plank
I’d qualify just a couple of things … Campbell has been playing great defensive hockey since his return, and seems in fact to be concentrating primarily on that, leaving the offensive flourishes to his teammates. I don’t think he’s healing, I think he’s healed … he was taking some huge hits in the Vancouver series.
I agree with your breakdown; I hate to fall back on a cliche, but I think this series will be decided by special teams … and the the always overlooked faceoffs (and again, both teams are pretty evenly matched).
I’m betting a split followed by a split … and then the only other thing I feel confident in predicting is that one team will win 2 of the next three ….

I keep thinking
that the way The Sharks need to play to win this series is all about out-muscling, hitting, and grinding. So I think weight will be a big factor. Here’s how we match up:
Looks pretty favorable.
I shouldn't have said anything.
It’s a good point, and falls back into the “getting the puck deep and forechecking like fucking mad men” motif we’ve got rolling. The Sharks have done a huge job of this all postseason, and if they keep winning those puck battles by utilizing their size, it breaks down Chicago’s transition game.

A tenatious forchecking Nashville team gave them fits
I’d like to hope we could be nearly as tenacious (based off play thus far) and are far more skilled once we have the puck.

I think this is a good strategy for the Sharks...

Forechecking’s one of our specialties as of late. I doubt Campbell can handle what were bringin. Clowe, Pavs, and Seto should eat him alive if that’s the matchup; Clowe especially. Seto and Pavs aren’t very big but they can lay on some big hits.
We shall see
If the Sharks bring a harder forecheck than the Preds, that could be a problem. I’ll believe it when I see it (not doubting you, but not swallowing whole either.)

The HUGE downside to playing more physical is
It tends to leave bodies out of position, and this actually plays into the Hawks hands more by opening the ice up for the Toews’, Kanes, Hossa’s, Sharp’s etc, . Vancouver tried to lay physical in games 2-4. It did not work. When they played disciplined less physical hockey in games 1 & 5, they soundly beat the Hawks.

We've had some problems with players being out of position
But that’s been more a mental problem rather than a “playing too physical” problem in my view. Most times, it’s the result of bad reads.
Your point is well taken though. There’s a difference between playing physical and running around. The Sharks can NOT run around against the Hawks. To win the “physical game” we have to own the front of our net, push you outside, and force your D-men to back in, turn around and then punish them along the boards.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
When I hear more "Physical"
Is the hard checks on the boards and open ice hits. Hawk players are willing to take hits, solely to remove a key guy from a play for even a few seconds (since this is all it takes for a good outlet pass, or cross ice to the high circle area)
Cleaning the crease is physical, and is always expected, but this too has draw backs at times, in screens, more point shots, and the weak side being open. Really this is getting into the nitty gritty of hockey and I love it!

I think you'll find we love the nitty gritty, it's what we talk about instead of working our 9-5s.
Our series against Detroit was a great example of owning the front of your net versus surrendering it. Evgeni Nabokov’s save percentage is below .900 for the playoffs, largely because our strategy against Detroit was to let Holmstrom et. al. set up shop and focus on blocking the point shots.
If hockey kept a “time of possession” stat, I think we probably had impressive numbers against Detroit (outside of Game 4 anyway). We held the puck, and when Detroit gained the zone, we pushed them outside, trying to limit their quality shots. With 17 goals given up in 5 games, the merits of that strategy can be debated, but it’s what we had. Take out Game 4 and 10 goals in 4 games is okay.
Basically, our strategy has to be deny the front of the net as much as possible, but if big Buff can get off the boards and to the front of the net, we have to block shots. Our guys probably believe they can force you outside and limit the quality of your shots (pretty much what you guys do to opposing teams).
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Pushing the playoutside is what the Hawks do, and do pretty well.
From here it now becomes a board battle moving the puck along the boards to the open man to set up, or tunring the play down-ice. If the Sharks loose these battles (on either end), it is going to be tough on them.
I know I mentioned it further down, but the Sharks Defence is going to be huge in how this series plays out, and I forgot to really enforce it, but also is how the Hawks 3rd and 4th lines contribute. The Sharks need to neutralize, not stop the Top 2 CHI Lines and the SJS bottom pairing needs to prevent the Hawks 3rd and 4th lines from being an impact. If the Hawks 3rd and 4th pairing start scoring it will I think cause the Sharks to thin their D out too much and allow the Toews/Kane and Sharo/Hossa lines make an impact.

i'm also a big fan of looking at puck possession
and considering that hockey is kind of a faster version of soccer (in many ways), and that ball possession is a key stat in soccer, i’m still surprised that “time of puck possession” isn’t looked at more. I agree, I think it tells a lot about a teams strategy against their opponent.

This should be another heart-attack inducing series.
The Sharks win if they can physically wear down the speedy Hawks forwards. Establishing a good cycle down-low, and getting lots of shots on Niemi, will keep Chicago from their transition game. For the Sharks, the best defense is keeping the Hawks in their own zone, tiring them out.
Kane and Hossa and Versteeg will get goals off broken plays, steals, etc., but if the Sharks keep their composure and go back to work, they’ll win the close games.
Nabby needs to be the best defensive player on the ice. Period. No off games.
Chicago plays young and talented: they feed off the energy of the play, good and bad. The key to beating that is to frustrate them, and make everything more difficult than they think.

Man Plank...
I think your totally selling the Sharks short, even if it’s just on paper. Assuming everyone’s playing up to their potential, I think the forward category is close but I think the push should go to the Sharks. The Hawks obviously win the defense category on paper (our defense has played great, much better than expected), but we definitely take the goaltending category.
HTML is better than their top line, or any other line in the NHL imo. They’ve been pretty successful and Heatley and Marleau haven’t even played HALF as well as we know they can. Heatley definitely looked like he was still fighting an injury, especially in game 5 against the Wings; he was falling all over the place and making all kinds of uncharacteristic mistakes. Hopefully he’s healed up over this long break. Marleau has looked half awake during most of the playoff games this season but he looks like he’s finally woken up and he’s starting to turn it on. If Jumbo keeps playing like he’s been playing and Heatley and Marleau start playing like we know they can, nothing can stop that line.
Our second line has shown what they’re capable of, and I think they’ve proven that they’re as good if not better than any other second line in the NHL (and most top lines).
I don’t know a lot about John Madden or Dave Bolland, but from what i do know of them, they don’t sound much different (or better) than Mitchell and Malhotra.
The Sharks have definitely looked better so far in these playoffs, but even on paper both teams are pretty much even. No need to conjure this image of the Blackhawks as this sleeping dragon we should be peeing our pants over lol. It’s no wonder all the Chicago fans are comin in here like, “OH YA BRO GREAT WRITE UP I LOVE IT. SO TRUE! OUR TEAM IS THE BEST AND YOU SHOULD BE SUPER SCARED!”
I’m gonna say Sharks in 6, only because I think it might take a game to figure out the best lines/line matchups and get our strategy down before we can really get going; and in case Nabby has a less than stellar game.
well as far as "OUR TEAM IS THE BEST AND YOU SHOULD BE SUPER SCARED!"
ummm….dude, i don’t believe that was said by anyone, on either side.
He also wrote that the Hawks “have struggled with consistency since March of this season, playing .500 hockey down the stretch.” And that they’ve been inconsistent in the playoffs. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement – it’s totally true, and also totally objective. That’s why i like this piece, b/c as much as i expect people here to be…well, SHARKS fans…I thought it was also a fairly objective non-homer assessment of the match-up.
The Sharks right now ARE the more consistent team, and that’s problematic for the Hawks. But the teams are pretty evenly matched, and they both have some stellar offensive firepower.

I don't liek the talk of Marleau and Heatley
true, they’re not playing up to their potential.
However, can we reasonably expect them to suddenly start doing so? They’ve been pretty good so far in the POs, but not great. I hope they suddenly start playing amazing hockey, but I don’t know if we can or should expect that. What we CAN and SHOULD expect is to keep up this level of consistency and keep playing like they’ve been playing.
That is why i’m confident the Sharks will eventually win out this series, because the whole POs they’ve been sticking to their game and playing smart hockey. If Heatley and Marleau recovery and start scoring gobs of goals, all the better.
Well were talking "on paper" here
Off paper there isn’t much of an argument and the Sharks should definitely win as we’re playing much better/more consistent hockey.
With Heatley, perhaps yes
When you’re playing hurt, there are just certain things you can’t do.
With Marleau, I have no idea. I don’t know anymore if he’s hurt or just MIA. He was “sick” that one game, but he didn’t look good during the majority of the Colorado series, and he’s only just now seeming to find his game every other shift it seems.
At some point, because there are other good teams in the NHL, we are going to need significant contributions from Heatley and Marleau. We can’t get by on what we’ve got so far. There are no passengers in the spring.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
The purpose of these previews is to highlight the other teams strengths and weaknesses, and I think I did a pretty good job of that. We talk enough about the Sharks on this blog that focusing on everything they are doing well/poorly ends up as tedious, both for me and for you. I don’t think I need to write something more about Joe Thornton or Joe Pavelski— that topic has been well covered.
As for selling the Sharks short, I didn’t feel like I did that at all. Each category ended with a condensed snippet of how San Jose has performed this postseason:
Forwards
The good news is that Joe Thornton is beginning to get rolling after Joe Pavelski carried the team through the beginning of the postseason, and the penalty kill has been stellar as it has all year long. Continuing to pound the puck down low and work the cycle limits Chicago’s ability to play with the open ice they crave, and if the Sharks are able to do that they will find success. With the top two lines beginning to play their best hockey at the same time, it’s hard to envision how the Sharks would be completely outplayed in this area.
Defense
As mentioned above, I think McLellan stays away from the fourth line again this season. As we’re all aware of, Jed Ortmeyer has been banged up for awhile and is floating in and out of the lineup. That leaves Helminen to fill that role, and when he’s seeing lower end minutes, there’s not a whole lot of use out there. Bringing Wallin into the fold as a seventh defenseman does a lot to balance out the depth of San Jose, and makes the unit stronger from top to bottom.
All in all, Chicago’s defense is a really good group in the top four, and gets the edge over San Jose despite the Sharks playing well in this area all postseason. Chicago didn’t have extremely low shot totals all season long for nothing.
Coupled along with the observation throughout that continuing to play physical will disrupt the Blackhawks most potent part of their game (transition), I’m not entirely sure the article screams “pee your pants” to me. I mentioned Chicago’s inconsistency as a big drawback to their chances, and cited the Sharks consistency as a good reason as to why they would win the series. Along with goaltending.
Again though, that’s a matter of perspective, and you’re entitled to yours.
I’m not sure if you’ve read stats wiz Gabe over at Behind The Net, but he agreed that Chicago was probably the better team on paper. As for forwards, Chicago has had more goals/game in the regular and postseason, and has a better 5v5 differential in the postseason. I’m planning on getting into special teams tomorrow, but the Sharks have a better PP. That was a big part of their series win against Detroit (3/4 games had a San Jose goal), and it will likely be a big part again this series as has been mentioned in a comment somewhere above.
Again, totally a perspective thing. But I don’t think I sold the Sharks short at all.

I think you did a good job staying objective and giving it to us straight. Although I can agree with Khaaz in that, in my very biased view, I think we should get the push in the forward lines. Although, that would also mean we’d have to have faith that Couture-Malhotra-Mitchell will produce more than they have. Which they are capable of…
I dunno, I can see the point, but Chicago is a scary good team. No two ways around that one. And you made that perfectly clear.

Sharks Chants
Bill Simmons came up with a good idea in his column (href="http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100510&sportCat=nba – scan down for the “Squad 66 award”). The idea is to use a twitter feed to mobilize and coordinate chants for games. Probably some of the usuals but maybe if we use our collective creativity, some stuff specifically for the ’Hawks and the Western Finals. Load up a few before the game and then adjust as the game goes on. If we get a few hundred followers in the arena, we should be able to make this work. Simmons is doing it for the Celtics with the @CelticsChants account. Let’s get the Sharks rolling with @SharksChants. Check it out at http://twitter.com/SharksChants
Follow the account on twitter and start suggesting chants. We’ll work out the kinks as we go.
Go Sharks!
Done

Hey Sharks fans, how's it going? Good? Good.
Now, before the provocation and name-calling begins, as it always inevitably does, this Hawks fan just wants to share a few things.
-A vast majority of SCH posters are cool people with lots of hockey knowledge and dirty mouths. We seem to clean it up a bit when we’re on other blogs, but if a few curses slip out, please don’t get offended.
-Can’t say this for all Hawks fans, but at least the ones I’ve met and talked hockey with over at SCH are not the over-confident lot they’ve been accused of being. Believe me, we’re not taking this series lightly. We weren’t taking Nash or Van lightly, so we’re sure as hell not gonna take the Sharks lightly. In short, please try to distinguish mouth-breathing, bandwagoning, “Shoooot”-yelling Hawks fans from the educated bunch over at SCH.
-That being said, the aforementioned mouth-breathers will certainly be out in droves on this site, most of them having just secured their first big-boy (or girl) computer as a college graduation present. Try to ignore them, but if you want to tear them a new one I for one won’t care. They probably bother us more than they bother you.
-The Hawks and their fans expected to be in the WCF, and I don’t think that makes us cocky. We were here last year, and with a more experienced team it only made sense for us to believe we could do it again. As for this series, I doubt you’ll find many fans that are overconfident. These are the two best teams in the West, and both teams have minor inconsistencies/flaws that are overcome by tremendous depth and scoring ability. I wouldn’t be surprised in any outcome to this series, whether it be a sweep by either team or 7 straight nail-biters.
-Last but not least, peace offering: Joe Pavelski is by far my favorite non-Hawk.

Thanks for the heads up
You can basically say the same for folks around here. Some bad apples seem to spoil the barrel, but for the most part we’re passionate and know a little something. I personally try my hardest not to make sweeping generalizations about a fan base, because I know and like many Hawks fans who are knowledgeable and friendly. However, as with our fans, there are some who are complete morons who love to jump on the hater bandwagon. This will be a heck of a series, Go Sharks!
by Chicago Shark on May 13, 2010 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, you live in Chicago, correct?
In my opinion, that almost gives you carte blanche to make sweeping generalizations about our fans. I get excited talking hockey on SCH because everyone knows their shit. Then, I’ll go to a bar to watch a game and I want to puncture my eardrums with a butter knife within 5 minutes of the game starting.

Yes, Avondale neighborhood
Though I will still stray from sweeping generalizations, mostly because the cool fans seem to outnumber the d-bags. Last game I went to, Sharks stormed back to tie it and lost in OT or shootout, can’t remember which. Fans sitting next to me were good sports, and we were going back and forth in a lighthearted way. Previous games, though, and I’ve sat next to the dregs of Blackhawk fandom, which make me seriously question the entire group. For the most part, Hawks fans I know are great, but there are definitely the assholes that can ruin it for everyone.

But I’ll take it. I can always stay home to insulate myself from them. Avondale is a cool neighborhood. It’s good to know that we can shoot the shit about everything from hockey to Hot Doug’s

Very unfortunate
I loved going to games with $8 tickets with a student ID, actually how I got more into hockey in the first place. I’ve been in this neighborhood for about a year, and I have yet to try Doug’s. The line is always out the door and I’m never home when it’s open. Berate me as much as you want, I’m trying to remember to go.

One Hawks fan keys to the Series
The Hawks have played two completely different teams so far. A very Defense minded Predators with a very good Goalie in Pekke Rinne, and a more offensively minded Canuck teams with (what people thought) was a god send goalie in Reboundo Luongo.
The Hawks have laid a few deuces (as ALL playoff teams have done this season) so far this post season, but have also dominated. At times the Hawks have only played to the level of competition, not their level of play. This has been an issue for a while. Consistency may be an issue, but it is not something I would rely on to beat an opposing team, much less the Hawks.
The area I see the easiest for the Hawks to attack is your Blue Line pairings. They are better than Vancouver, but are not nearly as good as Nashville. The Hawks are going to be running the top two lines with Kane & Toews, and Sharp and Hossa, with what ever other forward Q decides to pull from his anal cavity for that night. This is going to occupy your Top Line, and a chunk of your second line. So the Sharks 3rd pairing will be facing, my guess Versteeg, Madden, Buff, and probably wither or both Brouwer and Bolland, all who can score, with some speed mixed in. Will San Jose beable to slow them down? Nashville ran an effective trap against the Hawks, but still failed to stop the Hawks, and the Sharks D core is not nearly as good as the Preds was. But by running a trap, it may also slow the offensive game down for the Sharks as well.
The Hawks faced an offensive minded team in Vancouver, and were able to slow them up enough! 3 of the 6 games Vancouver scored 4+ goals and won two of them. But in the other 3 they combined for only 5 goals, and the Hawks won all three. Part of this was making a less disciplined team than the Sharks get frustrated and make higher risk plays and take penalties. Will the Hawks be able to slow up Sharks enough? The Hawks top two pairing are solid, blocking passing and shooting lanes, and blocking shots, and good set of forwards who are also very defensive minded. The Hawks just like the Sharks are very quick in turning the puck around for good scoring chances.
Goal tending. The Hawks have only needed Niemi to be Niemi, nothing more so far. This really does not change very much here if the Hawks D keeps playing they way they have for the most part, though he will need to be a little better against a more talented team. I think Nabby HAS to be the better of the two goalies. The Hawks are a puck possession team, and are going to get many good shots or redirects off, more than Niemi will probably face.
PP vs PK (Hawks 21.6 PP%, Sharks 19.6 PP%; Hawks 88.7 PK% 3 SHG ,Sharks 84.2 PK%) PIM/G is 10.9 for CHI and 11.5 PIM/G. I do not see PP being the decisive say all, though will be important. If one team decides to wear Clown Shoes and the other is clicking, well obviously that is another thing. Both PP and PK have been good for both teams the only big things is the Hawks PK has also generated 3 SHG.
I’m not going to predict the outcome not to piss off the Hockey Gods on my side, but I am a Hawks. I do expect this to be a close and explosive series. Neither team can take anything for granted in this series. I’m not going to rely to much on how the Hawks or Sharks have previously done in the post season to “indicate” how they are doing. DET, COL, NSH and VAN are all very different teams, and to compare play of one team against another really does not provide conclusive evidence of how they will play against the next team (CHI was 1 GF/G higher vs VAN over NSH for example).
Well Good luck,
This is going to be a fun series!

I was watching NHL on the fly the other night and a guy brought up a great point about the Sharks. He was talking about all the flack they get compared to other teams and are this whipping boy in the Hockey media. Pointed out that they haven’t been around for even 20 years and the fact that people have had expectation and this kind of ridicule is actually really impressive when compared to some of the teams that have gone a lot longer without success.
there’s some truth to that….especially not being an Original 6 team.

It does not help you get these "Experts"
among a hoard of others, who claim the Sharks as “playoff chokers”. I’m sure I said it at a few points, but really figured this year would be different, and it has. You do not make it to the WCF if you are a choker, you are now a top 4 team.

We’ve been media fodder for years, but seem to have finally broken through some of the stigma. Still, there are plenty others out there that feel we still haven’t accomplished anything until the Cup is in our hands. Rightfully so, but you have to hand it to our GM Doug Wilson. He was committed to getting us on the right path and really came through. Some of the new “acquisitions” have played a very critical role in this success.

They can talk great about Ovie all they want, his team fails year after year… Better question… Why the hell isn’t NEW JERSEY or CALGARY the playoff choker? Why just the Sharks?
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
New Jersey more so than Calgary I think, just because the Devs have been tops in their Conference for so long while CGY has been a lower seed a couple times.
Iggy’s performance at Salt Lake in 06 gave him a lot of street cred with the media, I think. Same with the Devils previous Cups.

Both of them have won a cup...
New Jersey gets the media benefit of the Doubt because they have broudeur’s wang in their mouths, are in the NYC market (notice they dont like to shit on NY area teams much?) and have actually won the cup.
Calgary, even though they havent won the cup since 89, still can claim the title… that said… in recent history, they have been a perrenial choker whether it be overrated during the season (as in, they’ve been expected to get a top seed, but failed miserably) or they couldnt pull it out during the playoffs…
either way. we get the most flak of anyone…

Yes, why not New Jersey? They consistently finish first in their division and the Penguins always advance further than then. In 2009, they blew a 1 goal lead with less than 2 minutes to go against Carolina in Game 7 and Carolina got two goals and won and advanced to Round 2 (and beat the Bruins). NJ — two years in a row of 1st round dumping (and they have Brodeur).
Not to mention the Bruins. Top seed in the East last year. And lost to Carolina. And then their epic fail of this year.
